Google becomes fifth largest smartphone brand in the UK in Q1 2022, attributed to Pixel 6 series

Google has become the fifth largest smartphone brand at the start of 2022 reports IDC. This is for the United Kingdom market and for this year’s first quarter, i.e. January to March. This is also the first time the search giant’s Pixel lineup of smartphones have entered the top five list.

Google becomes top 5 brand in UK in Q1 2022

Google shipped 1,63,900 Pixel phones during Q1 2022 and secured a 3.3 percent market share. It is a significant improvement during the same period last year when the company sold 50,900 units. Google is widely criticized for limiting the Pixel series to select markets, however, the approach seems to be working since it has entered the top five smartphone brands in the UK.

Back in Q4 2021, Google’s Pixel series recorded the best sales numbers. This was attributed to the Pixel 6 series with an all-new design and in-house processor. The flagship offerings were available at all four major carriers in the UK i.e. Vodafone, Three, O2, and EE.

The IDC report adds that Apple led the smartphone market with a 48.4 percent share and 2.4 million shipments. Samsung came second with 1.58 million sales. HMD Global (Nokia) and OPPO bagged the third and fourth spots in the list with 2,05,900 and 2,10,700 units respectively.

It’s anticipated that Pixel shipments will decline in the current quarter as the Pixel 6 series becomes older. But since the mid-range Pixel 6a launched earlier this month, the demand should pick up once it hits the market.

Apple & Samsung face new fines for not shipping power adapters with new phones

After Apple had removed the power adapters from its retail box for smartphones, Samsung had soon followed suit as well. However, this has led to both companies facing scrutiny and fines from various governments across the globe.

Apple

As of right now, the Cupertino based giant is facing additional fines in Brazil for not shipping their new iPhones with a charger. The brand has stated that the move to remove the power adapter is basically reducing its yearly carbon emission by 2 million metric tons thanks to smaller packaging, which leaks to more boxes in a single shipping pallet. But, it also benefits the company since it does not have to ship power adapters and EarPods, while it also saves on shipping costs as well.

In a similar fashion, Samsung also made the same shift with its flagship smartphones. However, a judge in Brazil ordered the Apple to reimburse a consumer the equivalent of 1,081 US Dollars since not shipping the power brick violates the consumer laws of the company. Thus, the South Korean company also faced a fine for not including a charger. Furthermore, both companies are also being charged in Sao Paulo as well, by the consumer protection agency called Procon.

Apple

The Procon in Fortaleza has levied a fine of 5.2 million US Dolars. However, it is unknown if that figure is individual or combined. Since the company made the decision to remove the charger from the box, Apple is believed to have saved more than 6.5 billion US Dollars in shipping and more. However, both brands are still facing more than 900 Procons across Brazil that may soon open an administrative proceedings against the two tech giants.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus leak reveals 10% overclocking & 30% rise in energy efficiency

Qualcomm had just announced earlier today (19th May 2022) that it will be holding a new Snapdragon event in China on May 20. In this conference, the company plans on unveiling its next gen flagship mobile chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+. However, prior to this event, a new leak has revealed some interesting details regarding this chipset, so lets have a look.

Qualcomm
Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+

The chipmaking giant’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus (SM8475) is based on a 4nm process. This chipset is will apparently feature an overall boost in performance thanks to a 10 percent overclocking. The processor will still retain the “1+3+4” core cluster architecture, which consists of a Cortex X2, Cortex A710, and the Cortex A510. According to a known Weibo tipster (a Chinese microblogging website), the CPU and GPU of architecture are still the same, but with an improvement of energy efficiency of 30 percent.

Qualcomm

Similarly, its power consumption has also be lowered by 30 percent as well. In other words, along with the 10 percent improvement in performance, this chipset will also have better endurance overall. The tipster added that this is the only official data as of right now, although, the actual performance of the mass produced Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ chip is still unknown. For those unaware, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ will replace the existing Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and will soon be featured in upcoming flagship smartphone models from various brands.

Glitch in Huawei’s AppGallery lets users download paid apps for free

If you follow the tech industry, you’re probably aware that Huawei is in a lot of trouble. The company was subject to a US trade ban in May 2019, which prevented it from working with some of its long-term partners including Google. This means Huawei phones cannot access Google services such as the Play Store. So, the company had to create its own alternative to the Google Play Store called “AppGallery”. However, it is reported that AppGallery is facing a certain glitch that allows users to download paid apps for free.

huawei appgallery

This vulnerability/glitch has been discovered by Dylan Roussel. He found that the API of Huawei’s AppGallery offers no protection for paid applications. It is reportedly possible to obtain a genuine APK download link for premium apps without even having to pay for it.

To make sure that it wasn’t the issue with just one particular app, Russel tried downloading multiple apps and he was successful each time. However, one game he downloaded had a license verification, which he failed to pass.

Russel even emailed Huawei informing them about the issue and offered them 5 weeks to fix it. Now it has been 13 Weeks and the vulnerability still persists. So, he decided to disclose it publicly.

Huawei’s ignorance can have a grave impact on the earnings of developers who have published their apps in Huawei’s AppGallery. Not only that, but this issue also invites app piracy. Attackers could exploit the API to download a huge number of premium apps without even visiting the AppGallery.

If you’re an app developer with a paid app published in Huawei’s AppGallery, it is advisable for you to implement additional means of protection to your application through DRM, like the AppGallery DRM Service.
