OPPO Reno7 Z design revealed through leaked renders, may launch next month

OPPO had just recently launched the Reno7 5G series in India. But recently, we have reported on the company working on another phone within the same series, which is the Reno7 Z 5G. And now, the official design of this smartphone has been leaked.

OPPO

The leaked renders arrives from @TheLeaks3 on Twitter. It showcases the design of the upcoming smartphone in all of its glory. Looking at the images, we can observe a relatively thin smartphone with a triple camera setup on the rear, consisting of two large sensors and a smaller one in between. Meanwhile, the front sports a punch hole selfie camera. Furthermore, the renders also reveal that the Reno7 Z 5G will launch in two color variants as well.

Interestingly, the Reno7 Z appears to be quite similar to the Chinese brand’s OPPO A96 5G that was launched last month. This model has a design that resembles the leaked renders but it only featured a dual camera setup on the rear, rather than three on the Reno7 Z. Although, the A96 5G features a LED ring lights that surrounds these two sensors. So, we might see it make an appearance on the Reno7 Z as well, considering the Reno7 Pro featured a similar feature as well.

OPPO

Apart from sharing the official renders, the leakster did not reveal any other finder details regarding the smartphone. Although, our previous report has revealed that it carries the model number CPH2343 and will be powered by a Snapdragon SoC. This chipset could be the Snapdragon 480+ SoC, paired with 8GB of RAM and Android 11 OS. The smartphone will also feature TUV Rheinland certification and is powered by a large 4,500mAh battery pack that supports 33W fast charging. While the launch date is still unknown, another tipster @chunvn8888 claimed the smartphone will launch alongside the Reno7 in Vietnam in March 2022. So stick around for more updates.

Huawei developing 3D camera tech for facial skin health analysis

Huawei is working on a 3D camera technology that should make it possible to analyze one’s face and skin structure, a new patent has revealed.

The patent was filed by the company with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in July 2021 and was released on 27 January 2022 (via LetsGoDigital). The 43-page documentation details a triple camera system capable of taking 3D facial images with the goal of performing accurate facial analysis.

The cameras have been positioned accordingly, with the first and second cameras being perpendicular to each other. The third camera is placed in between the two and at the center of the camera module lies a large display.

However, Huawei may implement the camera technology in a way it sees fit since the patent is actually a “utility patent.” A couple of the different ways are as an optional accessory or even as a removable camera.

During recording, on-screen instructions for capturing a complete 3D model of the face will be provided. It is likely that you’ll have to move your head around for the process. While the system is designed for human faces, it also recognizes animals like cats and dogs.

The output following the process will be some elaborate details about your pores, wrinkles, acne, blackheads, color spots, red region, dark eyes, or a combination of these. Tips and recommendations will be provided accordingly to help improve the condition of the skin.

India to begin 5G spectrum auctions in May: Report

Despite various delays and issues, it seems like 5G auctions in India are set to kick off soon. The spectrum auctions leading to 5G’s commercial launch in India will reportedly begin in May 2022.

India

According to a new report, a senior official from the TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) has revealed that 5G spectrum auction is on its way and will begin sometime in May 2022. Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had previously stated that the TRAI has confirmed that it would be submitting its recommendations for the 5G spectrum auction by March 2022. Furthermore, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is also working on accelerating the entire process to ensure that the auctions are held as soon as possible.

Telecom Secretary K Rajaraman added that following the submission from TRAI, it should take another month for the DoT to make a decision. He said that “TRAI has indicated that they will send it (recommendations) by March. Thereafter, it will take us a month to make a decision around it.” Previously, we had reported on the Indian government kicking off 5G auctions later this year, with a commercial roll out beginning sometime next year. In other words, the news is also in line with previous reports.

India

The government had taken around 60 to 120 days to start the bidding rounds in previous spectrum auctions after receiving recommendations from the TRAI. So we can also expect a similar timeline this time as well.

Redmi K50 Gaming Edition’s 4,700mAh battery can be filled up in just 17 minutes

The Redmi K50 Gaming Edition has been officially confirmed to be launched on February 16th in China, and ahead of the release, company officials have continued to tease the device. The latest teaser brags about the charging capabilities of the gaming phone.

Redmi GM Lu Weibing today through a post on Weibo revealed that the 4,700mAh battery on the Redmi K50 Gaming can be filled up in just 17 minutes. This has been said to be the “fastest charging Snapdragon 8 series mobile phone that has been listed.”

redmi k50 gaming edition charging

The charging system on the phone has been likened to mid-air refuels, allowing heavy gaming even when plugged in. The USB-C-end of the charging cable has been angled so as to not interfere when the device is being held horizontally. An elaborate cooling system complete with cooling fans also means that gaming while charging should not result in overheating.

Lu had earlier revealed that the Redmi K50 Gaming uses an MTW multi-pole battery, which has a lower internal resistance and lower heat generation. This has been paired with dual high-speed cells for higher charging efficiency.

Another recent official teaser had revealed the camera specs of the gaming phone. There’s a triple camera setup at the rear, with the primary being a 64MP Sony IMX686 sensor. On the front side, there will be a 20MP unit for selfies and video calling.

The Redmi K50 Gaming Edition will likely be selling with a different moniker globally. Take the Redmi K40 Gaming Edition that made its global debut as the POCO F3 GT, for example.

India bans over 50 Chinese apps, including Garena Free Fire: Report

India has apparently banned another 50 applications. The government has blacklisted more than 50 smartphone apps, which are most likely from China, and mark the latest wave of app bans in the country.

India

For those unaware, the Indian government had banned around 60 apps back in 2020 and another 60 a few months after. Now, it is rumored that the government has banned another 50 applications, which includes certain apps that had resurfaced as clones of previously banned ones. One of the notable bans may include the popular battle royale title, Garena Free Fire. Although, there is still no official list that reveal the names of all the applications that have been banned from the country.

According to ET Now on Twitter, sources have claimed that the new app ban wave is primarily to remove resurfaced applications that were clones. Furthermore, Garena Free Fire being pulled from Google Play Store and Apple App Store in India is likely due to Tencent having a major stake in the game’s parent company. However, there are currently no official news regarding why the game was removed from these app stores. So it is unknown if it was due to the government’s ban or some other reason.

A separate report has suggested that the list of banned apps include, “Sweet Selfie HD, Beauty Camera – Selfie Camera, Equalizer & Bass Booster, CamCard for SalesForce Ent, Isoland 2: Ashes of Time Lite, Viva Video Editor, Tencent Xriver, Onmyoji Chess, Onmyoji Arena, AppLock, Dual Space Lite,” all of which were removed due to supposed threat to India’s national security.

Google dLight is a smart lamp that you can probably never buy

Google has seemingly got a hand in seemingly every tech product in existence lately whether it’s phones, laptops, or even smart home goods like speakers and thermostats. It would hence not come as a surprise that the California-based company has also engineered a smart lamp.

Cleverly named “dLight,” as in “delight” or “the light,” the lamp is colored pure white and has a circular base with a pill-shaped component from which light is outputted. The pill can be turned around per requirement, allowing the illumination to be pointed straight at you or downwards (via 9to5Google).

google lamp dlight featured

Google designer Ben Gold, who revealed the product to the world, also says that dLight isn’t confidential or anything, but will “likely never be for sale outside of the company.”

Still, we are positive that the lamp would sell like hotcakes if Google ever makes it available to all. It carries those typical minimalistic ‘Google’ aesthetics that go well with the company’s other smart home products. Support for Assistant is obviously present and the lamp also appears in the Google Home app like any other light bulb.

The single shared image doesn’t show any power cable but the dLight does come with a USB-C port and even gets OTA updates.

The lamp’s FCC documents also show that it features 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and that it’s manufactured by HCC Teletron (HK) Technology Co., which looks to be a Foxconn subsidiary. Lamp input stands at 24V and the thing is rated 14W. The base also has a QR code slapped on it, possibly for easier setup.

Again, the Google dLight smart lamp has been created for internal purposes alone and will likely never be sold outside of the company’s internal stores. Ben says that it’s part of a greater effort to improve WFH situations and improve video conferencing.

Global variant of POCO X4 5G appears on Geekbench

POCO is expected to launch the POCO X4 5G very soon. The device is in the news for the last few days as it has been appearing on certifications and benchmark websites. Today, the handset has been spotted on Geekbench yet again with a different model number.

POCO X3 NFC 023
POCO X3 NFC

Earlier this month, the Indian variant of the POCO X4 5G with model number 2201116PI was benchmarked on Geekbench. Now, the Global version of the phone with model number 2201116PG has also made its appearance on the website of a popular benchmarking application.

According to these two listings, the smartphone will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 SoC paired with 6GB RAM. There could be other memory variants as well. As for software, it will boot Android 11.

The aforementioned model numbers are nearly identical to that of the model numbers of the international Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G. Further, Geekbench mentions the motherboard of these devices as ‘veux’, which is actually the codename of the international Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G.

This means the upcoming POCO X4 5G will most likely be a rebranded version of the Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G. It may have a few changes in the design and we cannot rule out the possibility of some changes in the specs.

Neither POCO Global nor POCO India has scheduled a launch event for POCO X4 5G. The current latest handset from the brand is the POCO M4 Pro 5G. This one is heading to India tomorrow three months post its initial debut.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra Burgundy Phantom Black Phantom White

This was an expected move and there were a few reports in the past weeks indicating that the South Korean could start offering Qualcomm Snapdragon-powered devices in the world’s second-largest smartphone market.

The development is quite interesting, especially for a market like India where customers have been demanding Samsung bring its Qualcomm-powered premium phones to the market and the company has finally delivered.

It remains to be seen how these devices perform in the market in terms of sales. The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, which was launched in India last year, is also powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon series chipset instead of the Exynos 990.

The has started taking pre-reservations for the Samsung Galaxy S22 series smartphones in India with ₹1,999 as a refundable deposit. It is also giving away a Galaxy SmartTag for free to those who pre-reserve these devices.

While Samsung has not yet confirmed this, it seems that the pre-booking for the device will be from 21st February and the sale will commence from 11th March. But do note that the South Korean giant has not yet officially confirmed these dates. Samsung is yet to reveal the memory variants and pricing details of the Galaxy S22 series in India.

Under the hood, the device is powered by the Unisoc T606 chipset which is manufactured using a 12nm process. It packs two Cortex-A75 cores and six Cortex-A55 cores along with the Mali G75-MP1 graphics processor.

The device runs the Android 11 operating system out-of-the-box but the company has confirmed that the phone will get the Android 12 operating system. Not just that, Nokia has also promised two major Android updates, which means that the device will also get the Android 13 update in the future.

It is powered by a 5,050mAh battery which the company is promising can offer up to three days of usage on a single charge and comes with support for 18W fast charging. However, the company is shipping a 10W charger in the box.
