Lenovo leads as PC shipments grew 5% in Q3 2021 despite semiconductor shortage

Global PC sales oversaw a 5 percent growth in shipments during the July-September period (Q3) in 2021, which is a major drop following five quarters of double-digit growth, thanks to the crippling semiconductor shortage.

As per a market research by Canalys (via: Gadgets 360), Lenovo enjoyed the highest share of the global PC shipments with HP following closely. Next in line were Dell, Apple, and Acer, in order, completing the top 5 rankings.

Total shipments of desktops and notebooks including workstations stood at 84.1 during Q3 2021. The numbers could have been much higher owing to unusually high demand had the supply not been bottlenecked by supply chain disruptions.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic, the PC sector has witnessed a 9 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR), and the deficit in the supply of PCs is likely to extend well into 2022. Canalys reports that manufacturers will not be able to meet the spike in demand with the upcoming holidays.

As per figures, notebook and mobile workstation sales grew 3 percent YoY to hit 67.4 million units, while desktops recorded an even higher growth rate of 12 percent with sales over 16.6 million units. The surge in demand can be explained by the COVID-19 lockdowns that have promoted remote work.

However, it is Lenovo that has outshined competition and has been the largest contributor to PC shipments in Q3 2021, selling over 19.77 units for a modest increase of 2.5% year-on-year. The Chinese company’s market share stood at 20.9% during the same period.

Closely following is HP clocking a 20.9% market share despite a 5.7% annual decline compared to last year’s figures. Units sold stood at 17.597 million.

Third in line is Dell with 15.18 million shipments. However, the company actually tops the list when it comes to annual growth, bagging an impressive 26.7% figure.

Finally, in the top 5, Apple and Acer both had annual growth rates of 14.4% and 5.7 percent, respectively. The former had a 9.3% market share with 7,824 units shipped, while the latter had a 7.2 percent market share with 6,076 units sent.

OnePlus 9RT launched in China with Snapdragon 888, 50MP camera, and Warp Charge 65T

Earlier this year, when OnePlus announced its flagship series, the OnePlus 9, rather than two phones, it announced three. Alongside the standard model and the OnePlus 9 Pro, there was a third and more affordable model called the OnePlus 9R. Today, it has followed it up with a refreshed model dubbed the OnePlus 9RT.

OnePlus 9RT featured

The OnePlus 9RT shares a lot of its specs with its predecessor but there are significant upgrades that still distinguish it from its sibling. With respect to its design, the OnePlus 9RT has a bigger screen now but it retains the flat punch-hole style as the OnePlus 9R but the back has been slightly redesigned – the camera module is not only longer but slimmer thanks to having three cameras instead of four.

The OnePlus 9RT is available in three colors – Dark Matter (Black), Hacker Silver, and Enchanted Sky.

OnePlus 9RT Specifcications

The OnePlus 9RT has a 6.62-inch 2400 x 1080 E4 AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, support for sRGB and P3 color gamut, and Corning Gorilla Glass protection. It also has a 600Hz touch sampling rate for faster responses when gaming.

OnePlus has swapped the Snapdragon 870 in the OnePlus 9R for the more powerful Snapdragon 888 chipset. There will be three configurations available – 8GB RAM + 128GB, 8GB RAM + 256GB, and 12GB RAM + 256GB. The RAM is LPDDR5 and the storage is UFS 3.1.

OnePlus 9RT features

For the cameras, the OnePlus 9RT comes with a 50MP f/1.8 Sony IMX766 sensor with a 6P lens and both optical and electronic image stabilization. The ultrawide angle camera is a 16MP f/2.2 sensor with a 123° field of view and there is a 2MP 4CM macro camera to complete the setup. OnePlus has ditched the 2MP monochrome camera and downgraded the macro camera from 5MP to 2MP. There is a 16MP Sony IMX471 camera in front with electronic image stabilization.

OnePlus 9RT cameras

The phone can record in 4K at up to 60fps, in slow motion and in 1080p at 240fps, and also record time-lapse videos at FHD. The camera app is packed with lots of features including super night mode, scene recognition, pro model, portrait mode, RAW support, video portrait, movie mode, and long exposure mode.

The OnePlus 9RT has an in-display fingerprint scanner, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, Wi-Fi 6, dual Nano-SIM support, USB-C, and stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos. It packs a 4500mAh battery and has support for Warp Charge 65T which is faster than the Warp Charge 65 of the OnePlus 9R. It also has a large cooling system.

OnePlus 9RT ColorOS 12

The phone will ship with ColorOS 12 based on Android 11 in China.

OnePlus 9RT price and availability

The OnePlus 9RT is priced at ¥3299 (~$513) for the 8+128GB version, ¥3499 (~$544) for the 8+256GB version, and ¥3799 (~$590) for the 12+256GB version. It is already available for pre-order and will be released on October 19.

OnePlus expects global sales to hit 10 million units by the end of 2021

OnePlus today launched the OnePlus 9RT. The phone is the successor to the OnePlus 9R that was released earlier this year and promises multiple meaningful upgrades. But prior to talking about the phone in the event, OnePlus shed a light on its sales figures for this year, and they were nothing short of surprising.

As per OnePlus founder Liu Zuohu, OnePlus has recorded a year-on-year growth of 257% in global smartphone sales in the past 6 months, or in the first half of 2021. China also recorded similar increase in the number of shipments with a growth rate of 124% compared to last year.

oneplus 2021 yoy global sales (1)

The company exhibited the highest growth in the US and in European markets while continuing to have the largest share of the high-end mobile phone market in India.

But perhaps the most exciting bit was that OnePlus is expected to hit 10 million units in terms of global sales, or at least that’s what Liu feels so.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise though considering OnePlus has been steadily integrating its resources with Oppo and is keen on expanding its smartphone portfolio further than ever before.

oneplus 2021 yoy growth (2)

While OnePlus’ move to ColorOS and the ‘ditching’ of the fan-favorite OxygenOS hasn’t been well-received, the company has promised improved experience and better software support. Its latest flagship series comprised of the OnePlus 9, OnePlus 9 Pro, and the OnePlus 9R all come pre-installed with ColorOS-based OxygenOS. But it remains to be seen if the consumers are willing to accept that.

Back in May, OnePlus had appointed Li Kaixin, former VP of Huawei Mobile China, as the Vice President of OnePlus. Li is known to have successfully led Huawei in China, helping the brand achieve tens of millions of sales. He now hopes to do the same for OnePlus and aid it in reaching the 10 million mark.

These Meizu Pandaer cases are all you need to give your iPhone 13 a new look

Meizu today announced new Pandaer mobile cases for the iPhone 13 series, which are set to launch tomorrow.

The company said that the cases adopt an ‘IML technology’ to provide a ‘visual and tactile naked experience.’ FYI, In-Mold Labeling, or IML in short, is an innovative labeling technology for plastic packaging that provides greater wear resistance than spray painting or pad-printing.

meizu iphone 13 pandaer case

The cases also make use of imported high-performance impact-resistant materials for a superior in-hand feel while not compromising on the protection offered (via: My Drivers).

Meizu says that its Pandaer cases make use of eight-color printing technology ensuring high-quality, detailed prints. The print again is said to be highly durable, just like the material of the case itself.

In order to fit onto the iPhone 13 models perfectly, Pandaer uses a ‘remodeling’ technique that results in precise openings for all the ports and buttons. Along with this, six high-standard quality inspection procedures have been undertaken to make sure everything is proper on each case before it is deemed worthy of being sold.

It is worth mentioning here that this isn’t the first time Meizu’s Pandaer has launched similar accessories. Earlier, the brand released a “fruity special drink” mobile phone case for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro with a translucent jelly design, priced at 69 Yuan (~$10).

Pandaer has even dived into the clothing market, releasing products like a Pandaer Magician Hoodie. Other products include Pandaer Interstellar Exploration Mouse Pad, Pandaer Interstellar Exploration Canvas Bag, 17 Series T-shirts, and jelly bags.

The company was also involved in the launch of the Pandaer co-branded Mechanical Keyboard and Transparent Power Bank by Meizu.

Samsung Galaxy S21 FE may launch on Oct 29, with Pre-Orders starting after Unpack event

Samsung is gearing up for its upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event, which is set to take place on October 20. Now, sources from the Taiwanese supply chain have revealed that the conference will have the company announce the highly anticipated Galaxy S21 FE.

Samsung Galaxy S21 FE

According to tipster Lanzuk (Via PhoneArena), the South Korean tech giant’s Galaxy S21 FE will be launched on 20th October 2021. The source also added that following this event, the brand will start accepting pre orders for the Galaxy S21 FE. Furthermore, the actual release date for the smartphone is apparently set from October 29 for regions that are scheduled to receive the device first.

The source stated that “some accessories have already started to be supplied to major regions.” This means that the Galaxy S21 FE’s launch is quite near. While Samsung is known to be suffering from shortage of chipsets as well due to the ongoing crisis, the news implies that the rumors for the Galaxy S21 FE entering mass production is true rather than reports regarding its supposed cancellation.

Samsung

For those unaware, the Galaxy S21 FE is a flagship grade smartphone in terms of specifications and features. However, unlike the company’s premium lineup, it arrives as a more affordable option for those that want the high end hardware. So we can expect specs like the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC. Keep in mind that the news is still an unconfirmed report, so take it with a pinch of salt and stay with us for more updates.

Black Shark 4S Gundam Limited Edition goes official

Earlier today, Black Shark launched the Black Shark 4S series in China. The new lineup includes Black Shark 4S and Black Shark 4S Pro. A special edition smartphone called Black Shark 4S Gundam Limited Edition was also announced with them. Let’s take a look at this device.

Black Shark 4S Gundam Limited Edition Featured A

The newly unveiled Black Shark 4S Gundam Limited Edition is a result of a collaboration between Black Shark and Bandai Namco Holdings. It is not the first smartphone with Gundam branding. Just two years back in 2019, OPPO released a phone called OPPO Reno ACE Gundam Limited Edition.

The latest Gundam-branded handset also follows the classic white, red, and blue color scheme like the last one. Even the software has the same theme going around with custom wallpapers, icons, and boot animation.

Black Shark 4S Gundam Limited Edition

The device also ships with a custom protective case. However, the 120W charger and cable don’t have any theme. They are simply white in color.

The box does not contain any other additional accessories, stickers, or collectibles. Anyway, we couldn’t complain either. That’s because this variant of Black Shark 4S only costs ¥3,499 ($543), which is only ¥200 more than the standard version with the same storage configuration (12GB + 256GB).

Black Shark TWS Magnetic Cooler Gundam Limited Edition

Having said that, Black Shark does offer its new TWS and Magnetic Cooler in Gundam flavor. Fans of the anime franchise can purchase them separately, in addition to the phone.

New Sony Xperia device spotted on 3C, features 30W fast charging

Earlier this week, we had reported on Sony gearing up for the launch of a new Xperia device. Now, the Xperia device in question has been spotted on 3C, which also revealed some information regarding the upcoming product.

For those unaware, the Japanese tech giant took to Twitter to announce that a new “Xperia Product Announcement” will be held on October 26. But apart from the date, no finer details regarding this product was shared. In other words, it was initially unclear whether the new Xperia series device is a new smartphone or tablet. But now, the 3C listing labelled the product as a 5G mobile phone, with a model number of XQ-BE72. Since the handset was spotted on the 3C website, we can safely assume that the smartphone will be available in the Chinese market.

Sony Xperia mystery phone

Furthermore, an ITHome report suggests that the device could be the Chinese variant of the Xperia 5 III. The 3C certification also revealed that the new device will support up to 30W fast charging. Talking about the specs of the Xperia 5 III which was launched back in April, it sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chip, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of internal storage, and a 6.1 inch OLED display with 120Hz high refresh rate. So stay tuned for more, as we will be providing updates when additional information is available regarding this matter.

DJI announces three launch events at once – DJI Mavic 3 Pro & Action 2 to finally release?

DJI on Tuesday announced three separate launch events at once in an unprecedented step. It was a teaser kind of affair with the company only providing information on the events themselves and not what they will be about.

Image: @DJIGlobal on Twitter

The event teaser has been titled ‘Good things come in threes’ and has been posted via DJI’s Twitter handle. It is perhaps the first time we have seen such a company announce three events at once. The first two will be held this month – on October 20 and October 27, while the last of the trio will be held on November 5.

But even without an official word on what the DJI launch event will have in store, we can still speculate on the products that will be launched. Latest rumors have set an October 27 launch date for the DJI Action 2. The camera has a modular design, and given the October 27 image shows connector pins, it is safe to assume that they’re indeed referring to the DJI Action 2.

As for the November 5 launch, it is likely to be the most significant among the three. The DJI Mavic 3 Pro drone was earlier expected to be launched this month but recent reports suggested that the launch had been delayed a bit, making it likely that the November 5 launch has been dedicated to it.

DJI Mavic 3
DJI Mavic 3 leaked owner manual

Further, leakster Jasper Ellens had shared his observations on Twitter saying that the third image may have something to do with the battery on the Mavic 3, so there’s that.

Now that the last two events among the trio have been tackled, the first one stands out like a sole thumb. Unfortunately, there’s no telling what it is referring to. It is indeed obvious that the symbol stands for ‘record’, but it doesn’t exactly help pinpoint a particular product from DJI’s portfolio.

TechRadar speculates that it could be a product related to the DJI OM 5 smartphone gimbal or perhaps the DJI Pocket 2. It could even be a more professional DJI camera, like the one leaked by DJI leakster @OsitaLV in August.

Regardless, it is only a week-long wait for the first DJI launch event, so we should come to know what it is about soon enough.

Black Shark TWS Bluetooth gaming earphones announced with 28 hours of battery life

Black Shark today announced their first True Wireless (TWS) gaming earphones along with the Black Shark 4S series gaming phones. In China, the earphones are dubbed Black Shark Fengming True Wireless Bluetooth earphones, but of course, they will be carrying a different name if they go global.

black shark gaming tws earphones inline

Equipped with large 14.2mm drivers with a ‘high-sensitivity titanium-plated composite diaphragm’, the earphones are capable of producing powerful yet precise sound at a reasonably low latency of 85ms. They are capable of a maximum of 28 hours of audio playback and sport a dual-mic ENC call noise reduction system.

The earphones have adopted an ultra-light design with a single piece weighing only 4.5 grams, thus making them extremely comfortable and natural to wear even for longer periods.

They use the Bluetooth 5.2 protocol along with a self-developed ultra-low latency technology. Paired with the Black Shark 4S phones, the earphone latency can drop further to just 30ms.

The earphones also support built-in exclusive voice prompts for scenarios such as ear-detection, mode switching, and low battery prompts. It appears that these prompts can be customized as well (via: My Drivers).

In terms of battery life, the Black Shark Fengming TWS Bluetooth earphones have a maximum battery life of 6 hours without the case, and 28 hours with the case. The charging time is 1.5 hours.

Further, Black Shark has teamed up with Bandai Namco to launch Gundam Limited Edition versions of both the 4S series phones as well as the TWS earphones. The special edition adds another color choice to the regular black and white color choices for the earphones.
