Apple iPhone 13 series pre-orders exceed 5 million units in China on day one

A few days ago, Apple officially unveiled its next-generation iPhone 13 series, which includes four models — iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max. Pre-orders for all these four models started on 17th September and shipments are set to begin from 24th September.

Now, a new report reveals that the latest iPhone 13 series has become an instant hit in the Chinese market. On the day the company started taking pre-orders, the company received orders for more than five million units.

Apple iPhone 13 All Colors Featured

Interestingly, the numbers are just the pre-orders received by the third-party e-commerce platforms and don’t include the pre-orders that Apple received directly on its own online store in China. Also, out of those five million pre-orders last Friday, about three million were through JD.com alone.

Some customers were also facing problems when trying to access Apple’s official website in China as the website wasn’t getting loaded properly. Some also started trending hashtags on Weibo relating to Apple’s website being down.

Although the company had planned to start shipping the pre-ordered devices from 24th September, that is no longer the case. With the high demand for new iPhone models, Apple has now shifted the delivery date for new orders from late September to late October.

The newly launched iPhone 13 series is considered to be one of the weakest updates from the technology giant but it’ll still perform quite well, especially in the Chinese market where there’s a gap in the high-end segment after Huawei Technologies is virtually absent from the market because of US-imposed sanctions.

The high demand is also attributed to the lower pricing of the newer models. Apple has priced the iPhone 13 series lower than the iPhone 12 lineup. Prices for the new models in China start at 5,199 yuan (~$804) for the iPhone 13 Mini, 5,999 yuan for the iPhone 13, and 7,999 yuan for the iPhone 13 Pro. This makes the devices about 300 to 800 yuan cheaper than their predecessors.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra to reportedly come with built-in S Pen stylus

Samsung usually launches two flagship smartphone lineups — the Galaxy S-series in the first half of the year and the Galaxy Note series in the second half. However, this time, the company confirmed that it is not launching a Note-series device.

One of the bigger differentiators for the Galaxy Note series has been its S Pen support but that is no longer exclusive as the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra also supports S Pen. And now, details about its successor have surfaced online, revealing some interesting things.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra Leak

Tipster Ice Universe claims that the Galaxy Note series is gone for good and the upcoming Galaxy S22 Ultra will take its place. It is being said that the phone will look quite similar to the Galaxy Note20 U and will come with a built-in S Pen.

Further, the report adds that the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra will come with a 19.3:9 aspect ratio display and will be powered by a 5,000mAh battery and is likely to have support for 65W fast charging technology.

Rumors indicate that the phone will have a 6.81-inch LTPO QHD+ screen with 120Hz refresh rate support. Under the hood, the device will be powered by the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 898 chipset. However, in the select markets, the device will also come powered by Samsung’s own Exynos 2200 chipset with AMD mRDNA GPU.

In the camera department, as per the leak, there will be a 108-megapixel primary camera and a 12-megapixel ultrawide lens. It is also expected to have a pair of 10-megapixel telephoto lenses, with one of them being a periscope lens offering 10x optical zoom.

The launch of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S22 lineup is just a few months away and we expect to know more about the smartphones in the coming weeks and months.

The rumor mill is yet to leak the specifications of the OPPO A55 4G. However, reports have revealed that it could be packed with a 5,000mAh battery that carries support for 18W fast charging.

The moniker of the device suggests that it will be replacing the OPPO A54 that debuted in April this year. Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 gets features from Galaxy Z Series with One UI 3.1 update

Even though One UI 3.1.1 is exclusive to the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3, Samsung has decided to backport some features with One UI 3.1 to other devices in its portfolio. Samsung Galaxy S21 series has already received some new features from One UI 3.1.1 and now, it’s time for the Galaxy Tab S7 series to get it.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE

With the new One UI 3.1 build that Samsung has already begun to roll out, Galaxy Tab S7 series tablets will get access to the new Labs feature that was earlier exclusive to One UI 3.1.1 on the Galaxy Z 3 foldable series. The Labs section brings support of multi-window for apps that don’t natively support it, along with a new persistent taskbar that would further enhance productivity.

The multi-window feature makes all the apps open in either pop-up view or split-screen, making it a delight to multitask on the tab. Additionally, with the persistent taskbar, users can now have their favorite apps pinned to it that’d allow them to switch apps without having to go back to the app drawer.

Galaxy Tab S7 and Tab S7+ owners will get the new update that goes by the firmware version T87xXXU2BUC6 and is being rolled out in multiple regions. Galaxy Tab S7 FE isn’t far behind and is also getting the new build with version T73xXXU1AUH6. Users can head to their update centers to find the notification of the new firmware update and in case they don’t see any, fret not, it shouldn’t take long.

Microsoft Surface Pro 8

It has, what Microsoft calls as, a 13-inch PixelSense Flow Display which is larger than the previous-gen Surfaces, plus it has a higher resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate too. Support of Dolby Vision and Adaptive Color Technology makes it “the most technically advanced display” and Microsoft’s best display innovation.

The Surface Pro 8 also gets a redesigned Surface Slim Pen 2 along with the signature keyboard, much like the combo found on Surface Pro X. Microsoft has finally dropped the USB-A port and has finally equipped the new device with Thunderbolt 4. The Surface Pro 8 ships with two USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports allowing it to run multiple 4K displays, use high-speed external storage, or even connect up to an external GPU.

Even though Windows 11 is available for the device, Microsoft has given users the liberty to choose between Windows 10 and 11, whichever users find better.

Variants

Processor: 11th Gen quad-core Intel Core i3/Core i5/Core i7

RAM & Storage: 8GB up to 32GB RAM & 128GB up to 1TB storage

Price: Starts at $1,099.99

Microsoft Surface Pro X Wi-Fi

While Microsoft was at it, it also announced that Surface Pro X will get a Wi-Fi-only variant too. Cellular connectivity on the Surface Pro X has been a pricking problem so with the Wi-Fi variant, buyers will have an option to go for a variant that suits their needs better. Even though the higher variant of the Surface Pro X houses a custom SQ2 processor based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 processor that supports 5G, the device has been restricted to 4G LTE only.

While the company has made no claims about battery life, we hope that the Wi-Fi variant of the Surface Pro X will last a little longer when compared to the cellular variant.

There are also a few improvements to Windows 11 support for both x86 and x64 emulation. The Wi-Fi-only Surface Pro X sale begins today at $899.

These machines were accompanied by a few more devices. Microsoft has also added the Surface Duo 2, Surface Go 3, Surface Slim Pen 2 & Ocean Plastic Mouse Official to its portfolio, more on which can be found here.

Honor announces Image Engine to enhance imaging capabilities on Magic3 series smartphones

Honor, the China-based smartphone maker which recently became an independent brand, has officially announced its self-developed integrated computing photography technology named Honor Image Engine.

The technology can be used for multi-dimensional and multi-modal information collection and is based on Honor’s AI-based computing photography algorithm. It can create an image experience beyond the perception of the human eye, claims the company.

Honor Image Engine

Currently available for the company’s flagship Honor Magic3 series smartphone, the company says that the Honor Image Engine has been integrated with the Snapdragon 888 series chipset, allowing images taken by different lenses to complement each other to achieve an improvement in image quality.

With this technology, the Honor Magic3 series can take two shots with the main camera and the ultra-wide-angle lens at the same time and the image is then merged through powerful computing. The higher pixel image taken will fill in the details of the central area, increasing the sharpness by 80 percent and enhancing the overall quality.

Honor Image Engine

To avoid blunt transition after fusion, there’s an intelligent smoothing algorithm that intelligently adjusts the smooth area, making the fused photos look more natural. It also supports fusion of the main camera and telephoto lens, improving the image quality and increasing sharpness by up to 180 percent.

Honor was a sub-brand of Huawei and was reliant on using technologies developed by the Chinese giant on its own smartphones, including imaging technology. With Honor no longer a part of Huawei, it has developed its own imaging technology.

After becoming an independent brand, Honor has been trying to become self-sufficient and reduce its reliance on other companies. The company is also in the process of establishing relations with suppliers to strengthen its production and supply chain. It recently partnered with Microsoft for developing smart and integrated technology solutions.

Design

A few aesthetic changes are making the iPhone 13 more attractive than its predecessor, but a few other ones are making it worse. The main advantage of the iPhone 13 is the smaller notch: you do not get a punch-hole display like Android flagships, but the notch is 20 percent smaller than the previous generation and the difference is evident. Further, the iPhone 13 has its rear cameras placed diagonally instead of vertically, which is a more elegant configuration in my honest opinion. On the other hand, the iPhone 12 is thinner and lighter. For the rest, they are pretty much the same: they are both made with a glass back and an aluminum frame, and they are waterproof and dustproof with the IP68 certification.

Display

The displays of the iPhone 13 and its predecessor are very similar. The iPhone 13 has a smaller notch, but it comes with an OLED panel with the same resolution as the iPhone 12, as well as the same HDR10 certification, Dolby Vision support, and peak brightness. You should not notice an evident difference in terms of image quality, but you may see a higher typical brightness on the iPhone 12. Despite they have OLED panels, these phones do not sport an in-display fingerprint reader and they rely on 3D facial recognition for authentication, thanks to the Face ID technology.

Specs & Software

In the hardware department, you can finally find an important difference between iPhone 13 and iPhone 12. The former has a stronger chipset: the Apple A15 Bionic built with a 5 nm production process and with a max frequency of 3.22 GHz. The Apple A15 Bionic offers a 50 percent boost in terms of CPU performance compared to the Apple A14 Bionic found on the iPhone 12. Further, it offers up to 30 percent better GPU performance. That is a huge boost if we consider that the iPhone 12 was released just a year ago. The iPhone 12 is available in three memory configurations: 64 GB, 128 GB, and 256 GB, all with 4 GB of RAM. iPhone 13 starts from 128 GB and it also comes in a 256 GB and a 512 GB configuration. Note that iPhone 13 ships with iOS 15 out of the box, while iPhone 12 is based on iOS 14.

Camera

The iPhone 13 and the iPhone 12 have exactly the same cameras, even though they are placed differently on the rear camera module. The main sensor is a 12 MP camera with an f/1.6 focal aperture and OIS, while the secondary sensor is a 12 MP ultrawide camera. The cameras are able to record 4K videos at 60 fps. On the front side, there is a 12 MP selfie snapper and an SL 3D sensor for 3D facial recognition.

Battery

Alongside the processor, the most important difference between iPhone 13 and iPhone 12 is the battery. The iPhone 13 has a battery with a capacity of 3240 mAh, while the iPhone 12 has just 2815 mAh. This means that the iPhone 13 offers an important boost in terms of battery life, which goes up to 19 with multimedia use and up to 75 hours with music playback. The iPhone 12 offered just 17 hours of multimedia use and 65 hours of music playback.

Price

The iPhone 12 had a starting price of $699 in the U.S. while the iPhone 13 starts from $799 in the U.S. and €899. Naturally, the prices of the iPhone 12 dropped in every market. At the end of the day, iPhone 13 has a way better chipset, a longer battery life, iOS 15 out of the box, and a more interesting design. Would you switch for these reasons?

This is in addition to also offering the highest resolution for such a front-facing camera when it is used as a webcam.HP 11-inch tablet

The new HP 11-inch tablet can be operated with its keyboard accessory both in portrait and landscape mode. This provides greater versatility for the webcam. The new tablet is also compatible with HP’s Tilt Pen which further enhances the functionality of the tablet. The keyboard and Tilt Pen accessories offer some innovation to the device. There is also a USB-C port for connecting more accessories and charging the tablet. The fingerprint reader is built into the power button on the tablet.HP Tablet

The new HP 11-inch tablet is powered by an Intel Pentium Silver N600 processor, it runs on Windows 11 S mode. The tablet offers 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage available for the tablet. While the tablet itself will be sold at $499, the additional keyboard accessory could cost up to $100, thus bringing the projected price of the new tablet to $599. As we get closer to the launch date, more details will surface on the product.

Piaggio Gitamini is a compact, cargo-carrying robot that can follow its owner

Piaggio is an automotive company with widening interests in cargo-carrying robots. The company has just announced the introduction of its second cargo-carrying robot called Gitamini. Piaggio Gitamini is indeed a smaller version of the Gita, the first cargo-carrying bot by Piaggio Fast Forward, an arm of the Italian automotive company. The Gitamini comes at a price of $1,850.Piaggio Gitamini

Gitamini has two large wheels, a central trunk, a machine vision system that enables the bot to identify and follow its owner like a dog. The robot can carry cargo up to 20 pounds inside its enclosed interior. The robot itself has a weight of 28 pounds. It can move a distance of 21 miles which outshines that of its predecessor. The Gita although has a carrying capacity of 40 pounds, can only move a distance of 12 miles.

The robot has lots of cameras and sensors that enable it to accurately map its surrounding. The radar functionality is a new addition that is absent in Gita. The array of sensors helps the robot to navigate through the terrain and follow its owner. By standing in front of the robot and pressing the lock button on the bot. The trunk can also be locked.

There are no anti-theft measures apart from the lock mechanism for the trunk. However, the company insists that this does not affect the deployment of robots to cargo carrying operations. The robot is priced at $1,850 and it is difficult to hazard a guess on the segment of the market that may want to shell that amount on a robot just for carrying loads. There are other challenges apart from the lack of an anti-theft mechanism, like difficulty in moving up or down the stairs.

The Gitamini is available for purchase on October 15 via the product website. The company will hope its relative success with the more expensive Gita will be extended to the new cargo-carrying robot.

The Nokia G50 is yet another Snapdragon 480 phone from HMD Global

It was just a few days ago that HMD Global announced it has a launch event scheduled for October 6. You’d expect that any product announcement it has planned will be unveiled on that day but that isn’t the case as the manufacturer has unveiled a new smartphone today – the Nokia G50.

Nokia G50 featured

The Nokia G50 is the fourth smartphone from Nokia to be powered by the Snapdragon 480 5G chipset, the other three being the Nokia X10, Nokia X20, and the Nokia XR20 rugged phone. It is also the first of the Nokia G-series to have 5G support.

The new smartphone has the Nordic design we have seen HMD Global use for its other phones. The back is flat but curves at the edges and at the middle is a cookie-shaped camera housing that is home to three rear cameras.

Screenshot 2021-09-22 6.59.46 PM

The Nokia G50 has a 6.82-inch display with an HD+ resolution and a V-notch for the 8MP front-facing camera. The main rear camera is a 48MP sensor with autofocus and it comes with a 5MP ultrawide angle camera and a 2MP depth sensor. Camera features include selfie video stabilization, watermarking, and Super Night Selfie.

The Snapdragon 480 5G processor is paired with 4GB or 6GB of RAM and 64GB or 128GB of storage. There is support for storage expansion via a MicroSD card that allows for up to an extra 512GB of storage.

There is a fingerprint scanner buried under the power key and you can use Face Unlock if you prefer that. The phone also has a dedicated Google Assistant key, an audio jack, and an FM radio. There is a 5000mAh battery under the hood with support for 18W fast charging via a USB-C port. The Nokia G50 has NFC, Bluetooth 5.0, and WiFi 6.

Nokia G50 software updates

The Nokia G50 runs Android 11 out of the box and it will receive 2 years of OS updates and 3 years of monthly security updates. The phone will ship with a charger, headset, jelly case, screen protector, and a Type-C cable. It will also come with a free 30-day trial of ExpressVPN.

The phone will be available in October with a starting price of €270.

Microsoft Surface Go 3, Surface Slim Pen 2 & Ocean Plastic Mouse Official

Microsoft first launched the Surface Go laptop as a decent and its most affordable PC ever in 2018 and the device enjoyed a massive reception. This spurred the company to release the Surface Go 2. The second-gen model turned out to be one of the best cheap laptops you’ll find around but then, the US tech giant has now updated the series with the unveiling of the Microsoft Surface Go 3. Microsoft Surface Go 3

In terms of the design, the Surface Go 3 isn’t very different from its predecessor. However, Microsoft crammed new gen Intel processors under the hood. The device is powered by the Intel Pentium GOLD 6500Y and Intel Core i3-10100Y processors. The upgraded chips are said to bring an improvement in performance by up to 60 percent over the predecessor.Microsoft Surface Go 3

The Surface Go 3’s processors are backed by 4GB or 8GB of RAM respectively. The laptop also comes with 64GB of eMMC memory but there will be up to 256GB SSDs on the Commercial Channels. It comes with a USB-C port, Surface Connect, 3.5mm audio, a microSD card reader, and a Nano-SIM slot (on the LTE models).

The device runs Windows 11, and the camera supports Windows Hello facial recognition. The Surface Go 3 starts at $399 for the base model.

Microsoft Surface Slim Pen 2

Microsoft also unveiled an all-new Surface Slim Pen 2 which is a worthy upgrade over the Slim Pen. This model magnetically fits into the Surface Pro 8’s keyboard and features better haptics. The haptic functionality is included to make writing and drawing feel more realistic. Microsoft says that it’s extending the haptic tech to work in several apps, and it showcased the stylus being used in Adobe Photoshop. The artist on display claimed that its sharper tip makes it easier to use and more responsive.Microsoft Surface Slim Pen 2 The Slim Pen 2 is powered by a custom Microsoft G6 chip and can work with all the products the company unveiled today, including the Surface Pro 8, the Surface Go 3, the Pro X, and the Surface Duo 2 via its pen cover.

The Surface Slim Pen 2 is available for pre-order today for $129.99 in the US.

Microsoft Ocean Plastic Mouse

Also launched today is the Microsoft Ocean Plastic Mouse. Just as the name implied, the new Microsoft mouse is a product of the company’s recycling and sustainability drive. The mouse’s shell is made of 20 percent recycled ocean plastic and packaging that is 100 percent recyclable.Microsoft Surface Go 3

Microsoft had pledged in August last year to pursue a goal of zero-waste operations by 2030 and put an end to the use of single-use plastics in packaging by 2025. The company is on course as the mouse’s packaging box is entirely recyclable. Microsoft also mentions a free mail-in program so people can send their old mice for recycling.

Surface Laptop Studio: A Surface Studio in a portable form factor

Microsoft’s new Surface Laptop Studio launched today and it is a pretty interesting device. As the name says, this is a laptop but it packs some of the features of the Surface Studio. If you call this a portable Surface Studio, you are not off the mark.

Surface Laptop Studio featured

The Surface Laptop Studio looks like a regular Surface Laptop in its default state called Laptop Mode. However, its form factor transforms when you pull the 14.4-inch PixelSense Flow touch display with a 2400 x 1600 resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate forward such that it covers the keyboard but leaves the trackpad visible. This mode, which is called Stage Mode, is more convenient if you want to write on the screen or switch to a touch-based input. It is also great for playing games and watching movies.

The display can be extended further towards you until it lays flat like a tablet and is covering the keyboard and trackpad. Microsoft has dubbed this Studio Mode and is best for when you are creating such as writing, painting, or drawing. The device also has an area underneath where users can store the Surface Slim Pen 2.

The Surface Laptop Studio is different from that of the Surface Book which has a removable display so you can use the computer as a tablet. Microsoft says that the Surface Laptop Studio is a culmination of years of work and development in areas such as display, hinges, and chipset.

The Dynamic Woven Hinge is made of woven fabric with embedded cables that can bend 180 degrees.

With respect to its specs, the Surface Laptop Studio has a quad-core 11th Gen Intel processor (available in Core i5 and Core i7 variants), integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics, Nvidia RTX 3050 Ti GPU (i7 model) with 4GB of VRAM, up to 32GB of RAM, and up to 2TB of removable SSD.

For ports, there are 2 USB 4.0 ports with Thunderbolt support, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a Surface Connect port. The Surface Laptop Studio has Bluetooth 5.1, Wi-Fi 6, Quad Omnisionic speakers with Dolby Atmos, dual far-field microphones, Windows Hello face authentication camera, a 1080p webcam.

Microsoft says it will run Windows 11 Home out of the box and come preloaded with the Xbox App and a free one-month trial of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Included in the box is a 60W Surface Power Supply for the Core i5 model while the Core i7 model gets a 95W charger.

The Surface Laptop Studio has a starting price of $1599.99. It is available in only one color – Platinum – and can be purchased starting October 5.
