Xiaomi confirms the Redmi 10 Prime will feature an Helio G88 chip just like the Redmi 10

Over the last couple of days, Xiaomi‘s India arm has been teasing an upcoming smartphone which was later confirmed to be the Redmi 10 Prime. The tech giant has equally confirmed that the smartphone will go official in India on September 3. Redmi 10 Prime

Again, Xiaomi has revealed another interesting detail about the Redmi 10 Prime. The device is confirmed to feature the latest MediaTek Helio G88 chipset. Ordinarily, this wasn’t supposed to generate too much interest considering that the G88 powers the Redmi 10 that was launched for the global market a few weeks back. However, Xiaomi has often released the Indian model with a different chipset. For reference, the Redmi 9 packs an Helio G35 chip while the Indian Redmi 9 Prime features an Helio G80 SoC.

Furthermore, the development would make the Redmi 9 Prime the first device with an Helio G88 chipset to hit India. The chipset was announced only recently alongside the Helio G90. It succeeds the older Helio G80 and G85 chipsets and arrives with features such as support for a 90Hz refresh rate support, LPPDR4x RAM, and eMMC 5.1 storage. It also supports up to 64-megapixel cameras, Wi-Fi 5, and Bluetooth 5.0.

The teaser page shared by Xiaomi India head Manu Kuma Jain also suggests a “superstar camera” onboard the 10 Prime. This is likely the same as the 50MP main shooter on the global version. We expect the Redmi 10 Prime to feature the same design as the Redmi 10. The device is also touted to be a significant upgrade over the Redmi 9 Prime and the Snapdragon 662-powered Redmi 9 Power.

If that be the case, the device will sport a 6.5-inch IPS LCD screen with an FHD+ resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels and a 90Hz refresh rate. The display also comes with a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. The phone will come in 4GB/6GB LPDDR4x RAM versions as well as 64GB and 128GB expandable storage options.

realme C21 bags Android 11-based realme UI 2.0 update

The realme C21 debuted in March. Despite launching in 2021, the handset was introduced with realme UI based on Android 10. Now, over five months after its release, the phone has started receiving the Android 11-based realme UI 2.0 update.

realme C21 Featured A
realme C21

The realme C21 made its way to India in April. The Android 11 update is currently live for this version of the handset. The latest software build for the device arrives with firmware version RMX3201_11_C.02.

The brand is yet to make an official announcement on realme Community. However, as per RMUpdate, the new update weighs around 500MB for users who were already running the beta build.

The realme UI 2.0 stable update for realme C21 is said to be pushed in batches. In simpler words, it is only available for a select few users at the moment. But like any other OTA update, it should reach all the users in the coming days.

The realme C series phones are knowwn for receiving only one major Android (realme UI) update. Hence, we don’t think the realme C21 will be eligible for the Android 12 update.

On the other hand, the newly launched realme C21Y might get the Android 12 update in the future. Because this smartphone debuted with Android 11, unlike the vanilla realme C21.

Vivo patents phone with a detachable in-display camera module

Vivo has recently been granted a patent with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The patent is for a new and innovative design that showcases a smartphone that features a detachable under display selfie camera module.

VivoThe Chinese smartphone maker’s patent (Via MySmartPrice) describes an in display camera module that can be removed from the body of the handset. This detachable camera odule will slot into one of the top corners of the smartphone, allowing it to be seamless with the body without any visible bulge. Furthermore, the device will still offer a full front screen experience with or without this module being attached with it. Under display camera technology is already a reality and has been available in the commercial market for a while now. So the design, while innovative, isn’t exactly outlandish.

Although, the patent is quite detailed with schematics revealing a release mechanism that allows users to detach the camera unit. Additionally, it also describes two moving procedures that lets the module rotate outwards to serve as a typical selfie shooter. The module itself will house its own lens element and will be independent from a lens attached to the display. In other words, it would work functionally similar to a pop up cameraVivoWhile the design is interesting, its practicality and use is still questionable. Having a removable camera might be useful as it can act as a remote camera that one can place and take images from by controlling it from their smartphone. Although, it is unknown if the module supports any wireless receivers. Keep in mind that this is just a patent at the moment, and could just be the company’s attempt to cover all bases.

OnePlus India reportedly offering free battery replacement for some older models

There are reports that OnePlus has begun a scheme to give battery replacements for some of its older models in India, at a minimal fee for labor. The smartphones that will enjoy battery replacement are the OnePlus 3, OnePlus 5, OnePlus 5T, OnePlus 6, and OnePlus 6T.

The scheme is already operational, and owners of the devices can walk into any OnePlus store to request the service. However, if you don’t want to walk into a store for the battery replacement, you can book the service online instead, but in that case, you’re only getting a 50% discount.

There is no official reason given for the move but it may not be unconnected with the fact that the company’s inventory of the stated spare batteries has remained stagnant for an extended period. In addition, these batteries are rather old and it’s unlikely that there would be a spike in demand for them. OnePlus, therefore, is seeking customer goodwill and loyalty by the gesture, although several options are open for its disposal of the inventory.

It is unclear how long this promo had been and how long it will remain, although we would feel that it remains while the stock lasts. One thing is also sure, lots of OnePlus models in the category will benefit from this incentive program. It remains a secret what the quantum of devices are expected to benefit from the battery replacement program. OnePlus is also mum on the number of unused batteries in its inventory.

Redmi Note 10, POCO M3 get even more expensive in India

Earlier this week, news broke out that Xiaomi had reportedly halted the production of the Redmi Note 10 in Indonesia. The reason stated was ‘semiconductor shortage’. Due to this very same cause, the company has been increasing the price of the handset in India since its launch. Today, the Redmi Note 10 has received yet another price hike in the country alongside the POCO M3.

Redmi Note 10

The Redmi Note 10 is getting expensive in India every other week.  Just at the beginning of this month, the phone’s price was increased for the fourth time. The handset’s price has been now incremented the fifth time already.

The latest ₹500 price hike is only applicable to the base 4GB + 64GB variant. This version of the device now costs ₹13,999. For those unaware, the same storage configuration debuted at only ₹11,999 in March. In other words, its price has been increased by ₹2000 since its release. Whereas, the 6GB + 128GB continues to sell at ₹15,499, which happens to be ₹1,500 more than its launch price.

On the other hand, the POCO M3 received its second hike in India at the end of July. A new 4GB + 64GB variant was also introduced at that time. Now, the third price hike for the phone increases the price of this new version as well as the mid variant by ₹500.

This means the POCO M3 in 4GB + 64GB and 6GB + 64GB now retail for ₹10,999 and ₹11,999 instead of ₹10,499 and ₹11,499.

The Redmi Note 10 and the POCO M3 were released as the best value for money smartphones in their segment in India. But unfortunately, due to the recent price hikes, these devices can no longer be called that.

Samsung Electronics may raise foundry prices similar to TSMC: Report

Samsung Electronics is expected to raise its foundry prices similar to the recent price hike from TSMC. The news arrives as the recent surge in demand has overtaken the supply and massive investment that is required to keep up with the increased production.

SamsungAccording to a KedGlobal report, major foundries are hiking prices due to the sizeable demand that has hurt profitability since a large sum of investment is needed to expand existing production capacities. So recently, the world’s largest contract chipmaker, TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.) had decided to ramp up prices on its products by about 20 percent, as per local reports. Similarly, the third largest foundry, UMC (United Microelectronics Corp) is also planning on hiking its prices in September, November, and even early next year as well.

The Taiwanese chipmakers have already increase the prices by about 10 to 20 percent in the first half of this year. And now, it seems that the South Korean tech giant is also planning on following suit. The world’s largest memory chipmaker’s vice president Suh Byung-hoon added that “We will rationalize foundry prices,” after it announced its earnings in the second quarter of this year. Furthermore, the brand also expected revenue from its foundry business unit to rise more than 20 percent this year.

SamsungSeoul National University’s professor Jaeyong Song expects that the price hike will arrive in the fourth quarter of this year. Song further added that “Samsung’s production line is so full that it outsourced production of some application processors for Galaxy.” The industry is expecting these prices to remain high until major foundries complete their planned capacity expansions that began due to the massive demand.

Over 1 million Gamers exposed to hackers by known Android game developer from China

A research team has just discovered a data breach that belongs to a known mobile game developer from China. This data breach contained information that exposes more than a million gamers to potentially being hacked.ChinaAccording to the research team from vpnMentor, popular android game developer EskyFun was using an unsecured server to store vast amounts of data collected from users on its games. Notably, a lot of the data collected by the company was quite sensitive and the team noted that there was no reason for a video game company to keep detailed files on its users. Since this sensitive data is not secured, EskyFun has potentially exposed all of these users to fraud, hacking, and other harm (like ransomware) from those with malicious intent.

For those unaware, EskyFun Entertainment Network Limited is a mobile game publisher from China that has numerous popular Android titles under its belt. This includes games that are based around role playing and fantasy genre, with total downloads being over 1.5 million. Furthermore, the games affected by this data leak includes Rainbow Story: Fantasy MMORPG (500,000+ downloads), Metamorph M (100,000+ downloads), Dynasty Heroes: Legends of Samkok (1,000,000+ downloads).

ChinavpnMentor’s research team discovered the data breach back in July 2021 and had immediately informed the publisher. However, the company did not respond and a second attempt at contact was made a few weeks after. After which, the team also contacted Hong Kong CERT (Computer Emergency Response Team), which led to the issue being addressed soon after.

Samsung One UI 4.0 (Android 12) beta program could be just around the corner

Google is scheduled to release Android 12 Stable in September. Smartphone makers are also expected to unveil their version of the latest Android at around the same time. For instance, OPPO could announce ColorOS 12 on September 13. Similarly, according to new reports, Samsung might also introduce One UI 4.0 in the same month.

Samsung One UI Logo Featured

Samsung is the only major Android OEM not participating in the official Android 12 Beta program. It’s not new as the South Korean tech giant has never joined hands with Google in this regard. However, the company is known for running its own beta program for its mobile software like any other OEM.

Late last month, Samsung officially teased the arrival of One UI 4.0 beta based on Android 12 for the Galaxy S21 series. A tipster even revealed that the beta initiative might kick off by late August. Unfortunately, there has been not a single from the company regarding it so far.

On the bright side, a Galaxy S21 Ultra has been spotted running Android 12 on Geekbench. Likewise, Samsung has updated its One Hand Operation+ app to add support for Android 12.

This clearly suggests that Android 12-based One UI 4.0 beta builds are ready and are being tested by Samsung. It’s only a matter of time the firm starts recruiting public beta testers.

One of the main highlights of Android 12 is ‘Material You’ design. As of now, it’s not known whether Samsung will be implementing it. What we know is that the latest software is said to bring optimization for Snapdragon 888/Exynos 2100 and a revamped Samsung Notes app.

Apple supplier Foxconn seeks to hire 200,000 more workers ahead of iPhone 13 launch

Apple supplier Foxconn is apparently racing to hire a large number of new workers for the world’s largest iPhone factory that is situated in China. The company is rushing to hire a whopping 200,000 workers ahead of the iPhone 13 series launch.

AppleAccording to a SCMP report, one of the major suppliers of the Cupertino based giant has started fast track recruitments for 200,000 workforce that it currently need to fill in by the end of September 2021. The news arrives as we reach close to the launch date of Apple’s latest iPhone 13 lineup.  As per the Foxconn site’s deputy manager, the process of hiring additional workforce is the “biggest bottleneck” as of right now. Although, Wang says that he is confident that the production site, which is also referred to as “iPhone City” can achieve this goal a the current speed of recruitment, which is also being supported by the local government.

Notably, the large facility can house as many as 350,000 assembly line workers and produce up to 500,000 smartphones a day. Furthermore, in the central Henan province, various local governments have also started processing new recruits for the massive iPhone production facility. These local governments have also employed 100 buses to “pick up job applicants from their communities and drop them at the factory gates.”

AppleThis recruitment drive is likely to better prepare for the projected demand for the next gen iPhone lineup. The new recruits would enable Foxconn to better adhere to the production schedule for the iPhone 13 series. Apple is reportedly targeting to ship somewhere between 130 to 150 million units of the new iPhones in the second half of this year alone and its current supply chain in Asia would be able to produce 90 to 100 million units to meet the initial orders for the new smartphones.

Chinese smartphone brands are said to enter the tablet market very soon. Xiaomi has already released its first tablets in years earlier this month. On the other hand, realme has been teasing its tablet but it is yet to officially launch it.

Similarly, OPPO, OnePlus, and vivo are also expected to announce their tablets in the coming days. These companies have already filed design patents and trademarks for the same.

At the end of June, vivo was reported to launch its tablet in the fourth quarter of 2021. Looks like that will not be the case. As per Hu Baishan, the company’s first tablet will arrive in the first half of 2022.

When questioned about other ecosystem products like smart televisions, the executive replied that the company is only focussing on tablets for now. He says that tablets have better integration with smartphones than smart TVs.

Unfortunately, the Vice President of vivo did not reveal anything about the firm’s first tablet. Going by trademark filings, it could go official as vivo Pad. Additionally, iQOO, the sub-brand of vivo is also expected to release its tablet.

Since vivo tablets are months away, we will have to wait for a long time to learn about them via leaks and certifications.
