Sony led the CMOS Image Sensor market share in 2020, but Samsung narrows Gap

The South Korean electronics giant Samsung Electronics has narrowed the CMOS Image Sensor (CIS) market share gap with Sony by a few points. According to a recent report from Yole Development, Samsung is gaining momentum in the CIS industry.

ISOCELL-HM3-PR_dl0

The Japanese electronics maker Sony ended 2020 with a 40% market share in the CIS market, 2% lower than 2019. Meanwhile, Samsung witnessed an increase of 1% in its market share from 21% in 2019. In 2020, Samsung held a 22% market share in the CIS industry.

The Yole Development report (via Elec) also shows that Samsung had a 13% growth YoY in sales, whereas Sony didn’t witness any loss or gain in CMOS Image Sensors (CIS) sales. Samsung started manufacturing image sensors back in 2002 with a less than 20% market share until 2018.

OmniVision OV48C Pixel Binning

Omnivision secured the third spot with a 12% market share. To note, Omnivision used to rank above Samsung at the second spot up until 2014. Yole Research suggests that Samsung’s expertise in designing and manufacturing CIS helped expand its reach and significantly grew sales and market share, now becoming the second-largest CMOS maker.

Meanwhile, Sony posted revenue of 1.01 trillion Yen in 2020, a 5% loss from 2019. The research firm indicates that the loss was due to Huawei halting its smartphone business due to US sanctions. However, Sony confirmed a sales increase in CIS for digital cameras in a recent conference call, but CIS sales for smartphones are dropping due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Japanese electronics maker is planning to increase its production volume. In April, the company started operating its new plant in Nagasaki, and now Sony is planning to build an additional plant to manufacture smartphone CMOS Image Sensors. The company is aiming for a 60% market share by 2025. Meanwhile, Samsung is preparing to expand to the automotive sector with the ISOCELL Auto 4AC image sensor.

As per the Yole Development report, the CIS industry posted a collective worth of US$20.7 billion, with smartphones and consumer products accounting for 72% of the total market worth. According to the forecast from the research firm, the CIS market is expected to be worth USD 31.5 billion by the end of 2026.

Xiaomi teases arrival of the Redmi 10, confirms key specs and colors

It has been more than a year since the Redmi 9 was released. If you have been waiting for a successor, then there is good news. The Redmi 10 is coming and its launch is very near.

Redmi 10 poster featured

The official Xiaomi Global Twitter account has begun teasing the upcoming mid-range phone whose specifications already leaked. In a series of posters shared online today, the manufacturer has confirmed the device is coming soon as well as some of its specifications and the colors it will be available in.

In one of the posters, we see the Redmi 10 adopts a centered punch hole over the waterdrop notch of the Redmi 9. The poster also reveals that the FHD+ screen has a 90Hz refresh rate, an upgrade from the 60Hz of its predecessor. This poster and the one at the top of the article also show the three color variants the phone will come in. The colors are Carbon Gray, Pebble White, and Sea Blue.

The Redmi 10 also has a redesigned rear. Gone is the centered vertically arranged cameras housed in a circle. In its place is a bigger camera housing similar to that of the Mi 10 Ultra but shorter thanks to the fourth sensor sitting next to the third instead of underneath it. The poster confirms the main sensor of the quad-camera setup is a 50MP sensor. It also reveals that the phone will have stereo speakers.

Xiaomi has moved the fingerprint scanner from the back to the side where it doubles as the power button. The audio jack has also been moved to the top alongside a second speaker grille for the second speaker.

The leaked spec sheet reveals that the phone will have a 6.5-inch screen and adaptive refresh rate that changes based on the content on the screen. It will be powered by the Helio G88 processor and will pack a 5000mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging.

Moto Razr (2019) starts receiving Android 11 update

The original Moto Razr launched back in 2019, has finally started receiving the Android 11 update. In case you forgot Moto’s first folding phone amid Samsung’s new releases, the Razr has finally been updated from a much older Android 10 to Android 11.

Moto Razr

Starting today, the Razr sold through Verizon will be receiving Android 11 via an OTA update. The smartphone was initially launched with Android 9 (Pie), and it’s great to see the Android 11 making its way to the Razr even though it’s quite late. After all, Moto’s reputation with software updates hasn’t been great. The 2020 Moto Razr received the Android 11 update sometime in April, which is quite late considering it’s almost time for the next Android release.

The update is rolling out to the models sold by Verizon with build RPV31.Q2-62-7-10. The Android 11 update brings many new features, including Conversations and Chat Bubbles, new media controls, one-time permissions, and other features. The latest update also brings the July Android security patch.

The update is currently rolling out in a phased manner, so it might take a while before you receive the Android 11 update. You will receive a notification as soon as the update hits your smartphone. However, you can also check for the update manually Settings> About phone> System update.

motorola razr 01

Recently several Moto smartphones received the Android 11 update, starting January, including Moto G Pro, Moto G8 and Moto G8 Power. In March, the Edge+ (Verizon) also received the Android 11 update from these Moto smartphones.

In case you missed it, Google just released the fourth beta build of Android 12. The Android 12 is due to release this fall with the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Android 12 brings the new material design dubbed Material You. Well, it will be exciting to see if the Razr could make it to the Android 12 or if this update will be the last one for the device.

Leak reveals chipsets that will power the Redmi K50 series

The K40 series is Redmi’s top line of smartphones released this year. The series includes the Redmi K40, Redmi K40 Pro, Redmi K40 Pro+, and Redmi K40 Gaming Edition. They are expected to be succeeded by the Redmi K50 series which should arrive in the first quarter of 2022. While there is still a bit of waiting to do, details of the phones have begun surfacing online, and the latest reveals the chipsets that will power them.

Redmi k40 Pro Review 24
Redmi K40 Pro

According to the Chinese leaker that goes by Bald Panda on Weibo, the Redmi K50 series will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. He reveals that the chipsets are the Snapdragon 888 and the Snapdragon 895.

Based on the way the post is phrased, we can deduce that he is referring to the successors of the Redmi K40, Redmi K40 Pro, and Redmi K40 Pro+ respectively. Save for the Redmi K50 which will be powered by the Snapdragon 888, the Redmi K50 Pro and Redmi K50 Pro+ will have the Snapdragon 895 as the chipset inside them.

It appears that Redmi is sticking to the tradition of giving the base model of the Redmi K series a less powerful chipset than its siblings. Nevertheless, the Snapdragon 888 is still an upgrade over the Snapdragon 870 inside the Redmi K40.

There is no info on the chipset that will power the successor to the Redmi K40 Gaming Edition. We don’t even know if a successor is in development yet. However, we won’t be surprised that Redmi may stick to MediaTek.

Xiaomi Mi 100W Wireless Charging Stand launched for ¥599 ($92)

Xiaomi has quietly launched a new 100W wireless charger in China called Mi 100W Wireless Charging Stand. It is a beefed-up version of the Mi 80W Wireless Charging Stand that was unveiled at the end of March. Let’s take a look at what the new charger has to offer.

Xiaomi Mi 100W Wireless Charging Stand 01

Xiaomi Mi 100W Wireless Charging Stand Specifications and Features

The new Mi 100W Wireless Charging Stand is almost identical to the older Mi 80W Wireless Charging Stand. The only major differences between the two are charging speed, color, and safety layer.

The two chargers are similar in terms of design. Phones can be placed on them either vertically or horizontally to charge. The newer model comes in black color with a gold accent, whereas the older model sports a white color paint job with a silver accent.

Xiaomi Mi 100W Wireless Charging Stand 06

As their name suggests, the new charger has a maximum output rate of 100W as opposed to 80W on the older charger. However, the duo uses the same Mi 120W charger and a 6A USB cable, both of which are included in the box. Interestingly, none of the Xiaomi products can charge wirelessly at these rates.

Anyway, the Mi 100W Wireless Charging Stand bears model number MDY-13-EL, while the Mi 80W Wireless charging Stand comes with model number MDY-13-ED. The former has an additional protection layer of current calibration other than over-current protection, over-voltage protection, under-voltage protection, over-temperature protection, foreign body detection, and electrostatic protection.

Xiaomi Mi 100W Wireless Charging Stand 05

Just like the older model, the newer one also features a dual-coil design and a dynamic fan, which runs quietly when required. Since the accessory uses Qi standard, it can be used to charge almost every product with wireless charging support.

However, only Mi 11 Pro, Mi 11 Ultra, and Mi MIX 4 can make use of the ‘Ultra-Fast Wireless Charging Mode’. In simpler words, these phones can charge wirelessly at their maximum supported rates of 67W and 50W.

Xiaomi Mi 100W Wireless Charging Stand 03

Xiaomi claims that the Mi MIX 4 with a 4,500mAh battery and 50W wireless charging support can charge fully within 28 minutes using the new Mi 100W Wireless Charging Stand.

Xiaomi Mi 100W Wireless Charging Stand Price and Availability

The Xiaomi Mi 100W Wireless Charging Stand is priced at ¥599 ($92) in China. The first sale for this accessory is scheduled for August 16 at 10 AM.

As of now, there’s no official word on the availability of this charger in global markets.

Realme GT lineup will replace the Realme X Series, confirms Realme CEO

Earlier this year, Realme unveiled its GT series in the Chinese market including handsets like GT 5G, GT Neo, GT Neo Flash Edition, and GT Master Edition. A few of these phones from the series will now go global on August 18 with the launch in Europe and India. While Realme is planning to proliferate the new series in multiple markets, it’s also ground working to shelve off an old smartphone series.

Reportedly, Realme is planning to discontinue its upper mid-range Realme X series and it may replace it with the Realme GT series. In talks with the folks at TechRadar, Realme’s CEO Madhav Sheth confirmed that the new Realme GT series will officially replace the older Realme X series.

Realme GT lineup will replace the long running Realme X Series, confirms Realme CEO

Sheth said, “The X will be replaced by the GT; so the GT is the new X.” It means the X lineup which offered high-end specs at affordable prices will no longer be in working. However, the GT series, which anyway offers a similar flagship-like experience, will take the lead from now on.

Notably, the other phone lineups from Realme – the Realme C series, Realme numbered series, and Narzo series will continue to launch in their set segments. The new GT lineup, on the other hand, will just be an addition.

That said, the series is currently available in China and is launching in other major markets like Europe and India. We can expect the series to reach more markets soon and we may also see some new phones incoming this year or next year.

FairPhone 4 5G gets Wi-Fi Alliance Certification, launch is imminent

FairPhone is carving a niche for itself as a smartphone manufacturer with its modular smartphones. Their design takes into consideration sustainability and ethical conduct in the production of environmentally safe products, using fair labor practices.Fairphone 3 Plus Featured

A report monitored in Germany says the FairPhone 4 5G has been certified by Wi-Fi Alliance on August 9. With this key certification obtained, we may be close to the eventual launch of the smartphone.

The FairPhone 4 5G will come with Android 11 and 5G network connectivity, which implies that its processor, possibly from Qualcomm will pack some power. FairPhone smartphones are designed to be more sustainable than most smartphones using a modular design. They are high in repairability and upgrades can be easily achieved due to the modular design.

There are also ethical considerations in the choice of materials and labor practices. FairPhone will not source materials from regions mired in conflict.

The wireless certification usually provides an indication that the product will soon hit the market. So we may be just weeks away from the unveiling. Maybe we could expect some official word from FairPhone in the coming days or weeks for the device.

Indeed, little is known about FairPhone 4 5G. Apart from the Android 11 OS and 5G network support, we are still in the dark about the product. It could be sold between €420 ($495) and €500 ($ 590) in Europe, as the two previous FairPhone phones lie in the range.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 is in short supply, thanks to Snapdragon 888 Plus

Xiaomi recently introduced the Mi Mix 4, its latest flagship smartphone in China. However, it looks like that the company is having a hard time keeping up the supply.

According to Lu Weibing, President Xiaomi, and GM Redmi, Mi Mix 4 supply will remain tight because of silicon shortage. He said that the limited supply of Snapdragon 888 Plus chipset and the low yield rate of ceramic material were the two main reasons why the stock of Mi Mix 4 was low. To note, the manufacturing cost of ceramic material is 5 to 6 times higher than standard glass, and it is also tougher to carve out a piece of ceramic glass.

Mi Mix 4 short supply

The first batch of preorders was instantly sold out, and Mi Home’s presales were also exhausted. Weibing further apologized to the fans and said that the stock for the Aug 16th sale was also going to be limited.

Xiaomi MI Mix 4 Specifications

The Mi Mix 4 brings Xiaomi’s new CUP technology. The CUP technology is Xiaomi’s under-display camera tech. The Mi Mix 4 comes with a 20MP camera housed under the display. The 6.75-inch curved OLED display uses a new micro-diamond pixel technology. It offers some interesting features such as a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, and 800 nits of brightness. The display is being protected by a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass Victus.

The Mi Mix 4 comes with always-on UWB technology that allows you to control compatible smart home devices by pointing at them.

On the back, the Mi Mix 4 comes with a triple rear camera setup. The setup is being led by a 108MP HMX f/1.9 primary camera having OIS and 7P lens. The other two cameras are an 8MP periscope camera with 50x zoom and 5x optical zoom and a 13MP ultra-wide camera with a free-form lens.
