XIaomi Mi MIX 4 display design teased, promises truly full-screen experience

Back in October, Xiaomi announced the Mi MIX 3 smartphone. The company did not release its successor in 2019 and 2020. Recently, the company confirmed that it will be announcing the Mi MIX 4 on Aug. 10 in China. Today, the company claimed that it has taken 1,020 days and numerous breakthroughs, failures, and hundreds of detours to build the Mi MIX 4. It also released a teaser to hint at the display design of the upcoming MIX series phone.

The company seems to be hinting at the display design of the Mi MIX 4 through the new poster. The Mi MIX series of smartphones are known for offering a truly full-screen experience and the same can be expected from the Mi MIX 4.

Xiaomi Mi MIX 4 display design teased

It appears that the poster seems to show the display design that it may have considered for the Mi MIX 4. The poster also shows the Mi MIX Alpha that was introduced as a concept phone last year. Its unique wrap-around display allowed it to offer a 180 percent screen-to-body ratio.

The last phone that can be seen in the poster has a curved edge display without any notch or punch-hole. Reports have claimed that the Mi MIX 4 will be Xiaomi’s first phone with an in-screen camera. Hence, it appears that the last phone in the poster could be the Mi MIX 4.

Reports have claimed that the Mi MIX 4 could be coming with a 6.6-inch OLED panel. It is speculated that even though it will support only FHD+ resolution, it will offer a better viewing experience than conventional 1080p panels. Other rumored features of the Mi MIX 4 include Snapdragon 888 or 888+ chip, a 5,000mAh battery, 120W fast charging, 70W or 80W wireless charging, up to 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM, up to 512 GB of storage, a 50-megapixel (Samsung GN1s) + 48-megapixel (ultrawide) + 48-megapixel (telephoto) triple camera unit, MIUI 12.5 based Android 11 OS, UWB, and mmWave 5G support.

Redmi Note 9 gets MIUI 12.5 update in India alongside Android 11

Xiaomi finally started rolling out the Android 11 update for the Redmi Note 9 at the end of June. This update is now finally live in India. Unlike other regional variants, except for China, the model for India is also being bumped to MIUI 12.5 alongside last year’s Android.

Redmi Note 9 Featured A
Redmi Note 9

The MIUI 12.5 update based on Android 11 for the Redmi Note 9 in India arrives with build number V12.5.1.0.RJOINXM. The software build is in the Stable Beta phase, which means it is being rolled out in batches.

Hence, the latest system update for the handset should be only available for a select few users in the country right now. Anyway, all users will be getting it in the coming days.

The Redmi Note 9 launched in the first half of 2020 with MIUI 11 based on Android 10. The smartphone was updated to MIUI 12 last year. Since it has only received a single major MIUI update so far, it should be eligible for MIUI 13.

It is worth noting that the Redmi Note 9 sold in international markets is known as Redmi 10X 4G. That device got Android 11 update way back in February, followed by MIUI 12.5 in July.

It’s a pity that customers outside China have to wait longer to experience the new software on some of the Xiaomi phones. We hope the company improves its software update delivery with the release of MIUI 13.

Realme plans to allow user participation in its product design process

Realme has been rapidly growing in terms of sales and market share ever since the company’s formation foundation in 2018. The company now has more than 100 million users globally, a goal which the brand planned to achieve by the end of this year.

Now, Realme CEO Sky Li has published an article acknowledging the feat and added that in the domestic market (China), the company was ranked first in terms of growth rate in the first half of this year.

Realme Logo Featured

Sky Li added that in the next three years, Realme will be launching a “User Co-creation Program” which will allow users to deeply participate in the design process of the company’s smartphones and AIoT products.

While a dedicated program for user participation in the design process of devices is quite new and interesting, Realme seems to be taking a leaf from its sister company OnePlus. During the initial days of OnePlus, the Pete Lau-led company heavily relied on user feedback to improve its smartphones and offer new features.

Realme has also set its next growth target of “Double 100 Million.” The company is hoping to increase the sales volume of its smartphones by 100 million by the end of 2022 and again do the same in the year 2023. It will be interesting to see if and how Realme manages to achieve this new goal.

Earlier this year, in March, Realme revealed that it had around 70 million users, having sold 42 million smartphones last year. At the time, the company was aiming to have a global user base of 100 million users by the end of this year. Realme has now achieved that goal well ahead of its deadline.

Madhav Sheth, CEO of Realme India and Europe had recently revealed that the company now has more than 100 million users globally. Out of those 100 million users, around 50 million are from India, making it the biggest market for the brand.

Xiaomi OLED TV Launch Teaser

The Chinese company has said that the next generation of OLED TVs will come with an improvement in picture quality. Details about this Smart TV remain unknown but we expect to get to know them ahead of the official launch next week, through leaks or teasers from the company itself.

In June last year, Xiaomi had launched its first OLED smart TV with the Mi TV Master branding for a price of 12,999 yuan (~$2,011) but is now available at a discounted price of 9,999 yuan (~$1,546) in China.

Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro smartphones won’t get launched in India

Google has unveiled its upcoming smartphones — Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, giving us a first look at devices as well as setting up expectations. The phones are set to be officially launched in the fall of this year.

While the Google Pixel 6 series will go on sale in fall this year in select countries, the phones won’t be available for purchase in one of the world’s largest mobile phone markets. Google has revealed a list of markets where the upcoming smartphones will be available for purchase and India isn’t on that list.

Google Pixel 6 series featured

This isn’t surprising given that the company has not been launching its main Pixel series smartphones in the Indian market for the past couple of years. The Pixel 4 series and the Pixel 5 series were also not made available in India. However, the cheaper variant, Pixel 4a, was launched in the Indian market.

As per the list revealed by Google, the Pixel 6 series smartphones will be available in eight countries — Australia, Canada, France, Japan, France, Taiwan, the US, and the UK. It may expand to other regions later. While the markets are now known, the pricing and availability details still remain under the wrap.

Google has not yet revealed the full set of specifications of these new phones but has confirmed some key details. The Pixel 6 comes with a 6.4-inch Full HD+ display offering a 90Hz refresh rate while the Pro has a 6.7-inch QHD+ display offering a 120Hz refresh rate.

The standard model features a dual-camera setup on the back while the Pixel 6 Pro has a triple-camera setup — a wide-angle lens, an ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 4x telephoto lens. This time, the photography performance could top the charts given that the chipset is said to be focused on photo output and use artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Talking about the chipset, the highlight of the Pixel 6 series remains its processor. The phones are powered by Google’s own chipset — Tensor, which is made especially for Pixel devices. Apart from on-device AI and ML capability, the chip is also claimed to have significant improvement in translation, captioning, and dictation. The Pixel 6 series will also feature the most layers of hardware security in any phone.

Flipkart and its founders could be fined $1.35 billion for violating foreign investment laws

Flipkart, India’s homegrown online marketplace and the biggest competitor of Amazon in the country, could be slapped with a massive fine. The Enforcement Directorate Agency, India’s finance-crime agency, has asked Walmart-owned Flipkart and its founders to explain why it shouldn’t face a penalty of $1.35 billion.

Flipkart Office

The agency is alleging violation of foreign investment laws, claims a report from Reuters which is citing three people and an agency official as its source. The unnamed official of the agency says that the case concerns an investigation into allegations that Flipkart attracted foreign investment and a related party, WS Retail, then sold goods to consumers on its shopping website, which was prohibited under law.

The development comes at a time when Flipkart is already facing regulatory issues, tougher restrictions, and antitrust investigations in India. On top of that, complaints from smaller sellers are also growing.

The notice to the company was issued last month by the agency’s office in Chennai. Along with Flipkart, its founders Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal as well as investor Tiger Global have received the so-called “show causes” notice. It asks to explain why they should not face a fine of ₹100 billion (approximately $1.35 billion) for the lapses. They reportedly have 90 days to respond to the notice.

Commenting on this development, A Flipkart spokesperson said to Reuters that the company “is in compliance with Indian laws and regulations,” adding that the company “will cooperate with the authorities as they look at this issue pertaining to the period 2009-2015 as per their notice.”

The Enforcement Directorate in India has been investigating e-commerce giants Flipkart and Amazon for years for allegedly bypassing foreign investment laws that strictly regulate multi-brand retail and restrict such companies to operating a marketplace for sellers.

Flipkart, founded in 2007 by Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal, was acquired by retail giant Walmart in 2018 for $16 billion. At the time, Sachin Bansal sold his stake to Walmart while Binny Bansal retained a small stake. The company raised a $3.6 billion funding round in July, valuing the Indian e-commerce giant at $37.6 billion.

POCO C3 sales in India surpasses 2 million units in just 9 months of launch

In January this year, Xiaomi‘s independent POCO brand announced that it had sold one million units of the POCO C3 smartphone in India since it was launched. The POCO C3 was first announced in India in October 2020 which means it took just 3 months to hit the one million mark. Nine months down the line, POCO has again announced that it had sold over 2 million units of the budget C3.POCO C3

The POCO C3 is a budget smartphone and despite the fact that sales have obviously slowed down since January when one million units were sold, this still is an impressive feat. Moreso, considering that POCO has released other models since after the launch.

As a reminder, the POCO C3 has a large immersive 6.53-inch HD+ LCD display with a water-drop notch and HD+ resolution. The phone is equipped with up to 4 GB of RAM and it houses a 5,000mAh battery. The phone offers “blazing-fast performance” with the MediaTek Helio G35 SoC at the helm.

The rear side of the POCO C3 has a dual-tone design. It has a square-shaped camera housing. The camera module has a 13-megapixel main camera, a 2-megapixel macro lens, a 2-megapixel depth sensor, as well as an LED flash. For selfies, there is a 5-megapixel camera housed on the waterdrop notch. Another impressive feature is the Splash-proof P2i coating that is rare to find on smartphones within the C3’s price point.

The POCO C3, which is available in Arctic Blue, Lime Green, and Matte Black colors, is presently priced at Rs. 7499 (~$101) on Flipkart for the base 3GB+32GB version. The price could come further down to Rs. 6799 (~$92) during the Big Savings day sale.

HTC A100 Tablet appears on Google Play Console, listed online for $200

After launching budget smartphones like Wildfire E3 and Wildfire E Lite, HTC is now expected to launch a tablet device. While not being popular for any of its devices in the recent times, the company seems to be still trying to maintain its position in the market. A HTC tablet dubbed HTC A100 has now arrived on Google Play Console listing confirming its existence.

According to the Google Play Console listing(shared by tipster Abhishek Yadav), a new device named HTC A100 is in the works. It is not a smartphone, rather, a tablet device that is expected to come in the budget segment. The listing reveals that the device is powered by a Spreadtrum T618 processor paired with 8GB of RAM. As for storage, the tablet has a 128GB of onboard memory with up to 256GB of storage expandibility option.

htc a100

The tablet packs a 7,000mAh battery and has a 10.1-inch display with 1200 x 1920 pixels resolution. It has a dual camera setup at the rear with a 13MP main and a 2MP secondary camera sensor. The tablet runs on Android 11 out of the box.

Moreover, the tablet was listed on a retail website with the same specs sheet. The listing has the image of the tablet but we aren’t sure if it is legit. Nonetheless, the page also reveals the price of the HTC A100 to be $200.

Given that the HTC A100 is still in the early stages of leaks, we may anticipate the tablet to appear in more similar leaks before it is officially announced.

Unannounced Google Nest security cameras appear on Google’s online store

In a move that could indicate their imminent release, Google has provided some of its unreleased Nest security cameras on its online store. A tipster has provided some images indicating that Google apparently listed a few of its yet-to-be-released Google Nest security cameras on its online store. The Nest lineup of incoming security cameras has been expected since January when Google announced it would be releasing the products.

It is unclear whether the products were deliberately released or not. Google is yet to make any definitive statement on the incident, although a similar incident had happened in the past. It inadvertently revealed the Nest Hub Max some weeks before its official announcement.

The new security gadgets include a combined outdoor/indoor battery-powered Nest Cam, an outdoor Nest Cam with floodlight, an indoor wired Nest Cam, and a battery-powered Nest Doorbell. The Google listing for all the unannounced products is yet to be activated as most of the links on the site take you back to the Google Homepage.Google Nest Camera

The few details provided by Google on the incoming security cameras provide some inkling on the void that is being filled by these devices. When eventually these devices are released, possibly in combination with others that may still be under wraps, they would fill in some big gaps in Google’s security camera architecture and lineup. Some of these devices offer greater depth in the acquisition of data discreetly and efficiently. Amazon’s Ring also developed popular connected floodlight cameras.Google Nest Camera

The online listing could well be a sneak peek into what is Google’s lineup for the market this year. There was no pricing information and global availability details were absent.

Google continues to provide cutting-edge direction across several domains. Its reach covers both hardware and software solutions.

Realme GT vs OnePlus Nord 2: Specs Comparison

If you need a flagship but you also want the most affordable price, you have two very interesting choices this year, and they are not released by Xiaomi. We are talking about Realme GT and OnePlus Nord 2 5G: these two devices are sold in the global market with the best Qualcomm chipset and the best MediaTek chipset, respectively. Even though they vary depending on the market, their prices are always very similar and if you are not an expert you will most likely have a hard time choosing which one to buy. This comparison will highlight the main differences between Realme GT and OnePlus Nord 2 5G and, hopefully, it will tell you which handset you should opt for.

Design

The Realme GT has a very original and attractive design. There is a color option that includes an eco leather back made of two pieces: the eco leather part and a black glass stripe with a beautiful pattern inside. This phone clearly reminds me of sports cars and that is the reason why its name is GT. The handset also comes in different color options with a traditional glass back. The OnePlus Nord 2 5G is a less unique phone: it has a good design, but it comes with a classic glass back protected by Gorilla Glass 5. The dimensions of the handsets are more or less the same.

Display

The Realme GT and OnePlus Nord 2 5G are similar even when it comes to the displays. With these devices, you get two AMOLED panels with a diagonal of 6.43 inches and a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, as well as the HDR10 certification which improves the image quality. There are also in-display fingerprint readers. The only important difference between these two panels is the refresh rate: the Realme GT is superior because it supports up to 120 Hz, while OnePlus Nord 2 5G stops at 90 Hz. Note that the refresh rate does not impact the image quality but only the smoothness of the display.

Specs & Software

Realme GT has a better hardware department simply because it packs a superior chipset. We are referring to the Snapdragon 888 mobile platform by Qualcomm which is definitely stronger than the Dimensity 1200 by MediaTek found on the OnePlus Nord 2 5G. However, you still get a flagship-class level of performance with the Dimensity 1200 SoC, so having a Snapdragon 888 is not a so big deal. The memory configurations are the same: 8 or 12 GB of RAM and 128 or 256 GB of UFS 3.1 native storage depending on the chosen variant. The phones run Android 11 out of the box with OxygenOS and Realme UI to customize it. As for now, these two user interfaces are very similar as they are both based on ColorOS by OPPO.

Camera

The main advantage of the OnePlus Nord 2 5G is the better camera setup it is able to offer. It has a Sony IMX766 main camera with a 50 MP resolution which can provide a better photo quality and it also comes with OIS. With the Realme GT, you get an inferior 64 MP camera without OIS. The secondary sensor of the rear camera module are the same: an 8 MP ultrawide camera and a 2 MP macro camera. The OnePlus Nord 2 5G also offers a better front camera with a resolution of 32 MP, while Realme GT has an inferior 16 MP lens.

Battery

The Realme GT and the OnePlus Nord 2 5G pack the same battery with a capacity of 4500 mAh which supports 65W fast charging. Do they also provide the same battery life? It depends on the usage. If you use the 120 Hz refresh rate on the Realme GT, it will drain more battery compared to the 90 Hz of the OnePlus Nord 2 5G. Further, the Snapdragon 888 is built with a better 5 nm production process, so it is able to offer a lower energy consumption in a few scenarios. But at the end of the day, the battery life should not be so different.

Price

The prices of the Realme GT and the OnePlus Nord 2 5G for the global market are starting from €399/$472. Overall, the OnePlus Nord 2 5G looks a bit more interesting for those who are searching for good camera performance, while Realme GT is more attractive for those who prefer an original design, a higher refresh rate, and a better chipset. For the rest, they are pretty much the same.

Nokia 5.3 finally receives its Android 11 update

When Android 11 was released last year, HMD Global released a roadmap that showed when its eligible devices will receive the update. The Nokia 5.3 was scheduled to receive the OS upgrade in the fourth quarter of 2020 but that didn’t happen. After more than a six-month delay, the update has finally arrived for the mid-range phone.

The announcement was made on the Nokia Community earlier today by a staff member and he revealed that the Android 11 update for the Nokia 5.3 will be available in waves. The countries under the first wave are listed below and all of them are expected to have received it by August 6:

  • Cambodia
  • Hong Kong
  • India
  • Indonesia
  • Laos
  • Macau
  • Malaysia
  • Myanmar
  • Nepal
  • Sri Lanka
  • Switzerland
  • Taiwan
  • Vietnam

Below is the changelog for the update:

  • Manage your conversations: Get all your messages in one place
  • One-time permissions: Give one-time permissions to apps that need your mic, camera, or location
  • Google Play system updates: Even more security and privacy fixes sent to your phone, right on Google Play
  • Google Security Patch 2021-06

There are still a lot of Nokia phones that are yet to get the Android 11 update and they include the Nokia 5.4, Nokia 1.4, Nokia 6.2, Nokia 7.2, and Nokia 9 PureView. The last roadmap released in May says all devices will be updated by the end of the third quarter but that doesn’t seem likely.

MIUI 12.5 update rolling out to Redmi Note 10, Redmi 8, Redmi 8A, Redmi 7A

Xiaomin’s Lei Jun has confirmed that MIUI 13 will arrive by the end of 2021. This means MIUI 12.5 continues to be the new version of the company’s Android-based mobile operating system for the time being. It makes sense too as the firm has just started rolling out this version of MIUI for Redmi Note 10, Redmi 8, Redmi 8A and Redmi 7A.

The Redmi Note 10 is the most affordable smartphone in the Redmi Note 10 series. However, despite launching in March, the device has begun to receive the MIUI 12.5 update only now.

In fact, the update is currently only live for the ‘Global’ variant of the phone with build number V12.5.2.0.RKGMIXM. Anyway, other regional variants should get this very same update in the coming weeks.

On the other hand, the MIUI 12.5 update for Redmi 8, Redmi 8A, and Redmi 7A is only available in China right now. The update for these devices arrives with build numbers V12.5.1.0.QCNCNXM, V12.5.1.0.QCPCNXM, and V12.5.1.0.QCMCNXM respectively.

The update should gradually reach the remaining variants of these handsets in the near future. That said, MIUI 12.5 could be the last major update for these three phones.

Because Xiaomi is known for providing two MIUI updates and one Android update for its entry-level smartphones, and these handsets have now reached that threshold.
