Intel will now manufacture chips for Qualcomm; aims to lead foundry market by 2025

Intel has today announced Qualcomm as the first major customer for its new Intel Foundry Services business. Qualcomm, which is powering most of the premium Android smartphones with its Snapdragon lineup of chips, will have its chips manufactured by Intel in the coming years.

For manufacturing chips, Intel will be using its upcoming 20A process which will use new transistor technology to help reduce chip power consuption. As of now, there’s no information about which products from Qualcomm will be manufactured by Intel and when the Intel-made Qualcomm products will arrive in the market.

Intel

Apart from Qualcomm, Intel has also announced Amazon Web Services as another new customer for the foundry chip business. However, Amazon won’t be using Intel’s chip-making technology but will use packaging technology. It is basically a process of assembling chips and “chiplets” or “tiles” by stacking them up.

Intel 20A will rely on two new technologies — RibbonFET and PowerVia. RibbonFET is Intel’s first new transistor architecture since FinFET in 2011. It delivers faster transistor switching speeds while achieving the same drive current as multiple fins in a smaller footprint.

On the other hand, PowerVia is Intel’s industry-first implementation of backside power delivery, which optimizes signal transmission by eliminating the need for power routing on the front side of the wafer. Also, Starting as early as 2025, the company will tap a new generation of machines from ASML that use extreme ultraviolet lithography.

The company is also changing the naming method for its technologies. Intel 7 offers 10-15% performance-per-watt increase versus Intel 10nm SuperFin, based on FinFET transistor optimizations. It will be used in products like Alder Lake for clients in 2021 and Sapphire Rapids for the data center.

Intel Roadmap 2025

The Intel 4 uses EUV lithography to print small features using ultra-short wavelength light. It is expected to offer around 20% performance-per-watt increase, along with area improvements. It will be ready for production in the second half of 2022 for products shipping in 2023.

Intel 3 leverages further FinFET optimizations and increased EUV to deliver an approximately 18% performance-per-watt increase over Intel 4. It will be ready to begin manufacturing products in the second half of 2023.

With these new customers and the latest technologies, Intel is expecting to regain its market lead by 2025. In the foundry services business, the company will be competing against market leaders like TSMC and Samsung.

Samsung starts testing One UI 3.1.1, release set for late August

Samsung released One UI 3.0 based on Android 11 in late 2020. Earlier this year, the company introduced One UI 3.1 with the launch of the Galaxy S21 series. Six months later, the South Korean tech giant has now started testing One UI 3.1.1.

Samsung One UI Logo Featured

According to TizenHelp, a moderator on the Samsung Members community forum has revealed that One UI 3.1.1 will be released for the Galaxy S21 series around the end of August. This means the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3, which are expected to hit the shelves about the same time will likely debut with this version of the software.

Further, as per the CheckFirm app (via SamNext), Samsung has already started testing One UI 3.1.1 for the Galaxy S21 series. Hence, the update should indeed arrive by the end of next month.

Unfortunately, nothing is known about the next iteration of One UI. Going by One UI 2.5 and One UI 1.5, which are the predecessors of One UI 3.1.1, the new version should mostly bring new features for premium smartphones and tablets.

We expect to learn more about these features and supported devices with the launch of Samsung’s next foldables. Maybe, we will get to know about them beforehand via firmware code. Until then, all we can do is wait.

Microsoft Surface Duo 2 design leak reveals triple-camera setup

Last year, Microsoft launched its Surface Duo as the brand’s first dual-screen device. The Redmond-based technology giant has been working on its successor, dubbed Surface Duo 2, and details about the upcoming device have now surfaced online.

The design of the Microsoft Surface Duo 2 has leaked online, which reveals that the device will be featuring a triple-camera setup on the back. The sensors are placed vertically in the top-left corner on a rectangular module.

Microsoft Surface Duo 2

As for the overall look of the device, it remains the same as the current-generation model, having two displays connected by a hinge in the middle, a glass back panel, and a Surface logo on the back.

The camera is expected to deliver better results as reports indicate that Microsoft is planning to use Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. The company is also said to be focusing on improving the software experience.

One of the major drawbacks for the Surface Duo was its internals, being powered by a couple of years old Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset. However, in the upcoming version, the company is said to be using the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC. Further, the device is expected to have support for 5G connectivity as well as NFC.

Earlier, it was reported that the Microsoft Surface Duo 2 has the codename “Zeta.” As of now, there’s no information about when the company is planning to launch this new model but it’s unlikely to happen this year. We expect to know more details about the Surface Duo 2 in the coming weeks and months.

The Nokia 6310 returns in an elegant new body for €60

HMD Global has made it a tradition to relaunch classic Nokia feature phones since it got the license for the Nokia brand name a few years ago. Today, the latest classic phone to get a modern release is the Nokia 6310. The 2021 edition comes in an elegant but familiar new body.

Nokia 6310

The new Nokia 6310 keeps the candy bar design of the original launched back in 2001 but with some modern additions. While the claw-like speaker grille of the original would have been nice, the new version settles for a simple horizontal slit for the earpiece. Gone is the monochrome 6-line display and in its place is a curved color one that is also bigger. The 2021 version also packs a rear camera.

With respect to its specs, the Nokia 6310 has a 2.8-inch display. It is powered by a UNISOC 6531F processor and has 8MB of RAM and 16MB of storage. The spec sheet says it runs the Series 30+ (S30+) operating system. The icons are bigger and the menu is zoomed in to make it easier to read. There is also an accessibility mode that even further simplifies the menu.

The phone has a single 0.3MP camera on the back along with an LED flash. There is a MicroSD card slot and users will be able to add up to 32GB of additional storage. It has Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi, dual SIM support, and FM radio (wired and wireless dual-mode).

The 1150mAh battery capacity is just a tad bigger than that of the 2001 model but Nokia claims it will provide more than 7 hours of talk time and will last weeks in standby mode. The battery is removable and Nokia ships the phone with a charger and micro USB cable.

The video advert shows the Nokia 6310 in three colors but users will only be able to purchase the phone in Black and Dark Green. I know a lot of folks will agree that the latter is the finest of them all.

You can pick up the Nokia 6310 for €59.90 in Europe on the official Nokia Mobile website.

Nokia XR20 official video ads show the rugged phone can take several kicks

The official Nokia Mobile YouTube account has uploaded two video ads for the Nokia XR20 rugged smartphone. The videos give us a good look at the smartphone as well as some of its features.

One of the videos shows the Nokia XR20 get kicked and hit multiple times with a football by professional footballer, Roberto Carlos, and world freestyle champion, Lisa Zimouche. The phone takes some heavy shots from Carlos who shows he is still great at freekicks, while Lisa juggles the phone, knocks off a few units with the ball, and drops another in a bowl of water, confirming that the phone has water resistance.

The other video is a more traditional advert. We see the Nokia XR20 survive a coffee spill and then a rinse under the tap. It also survives multiple falls from different heights.

Both videos also provide a good look at the design of the phone. The Nokia XR20 has a centered punch hole that houses the front-facing camera. The bezels are slim but the chin is significantly thicker. The frame of the phone extends above the display to provide extra protection when the phone takes a fall. Nokia has also reinforced the sides of the frame with what appears to be steel.

We were able to catch a glimpse of an audio jack at the bottom alongside the USB-C port and speaker grille. There are also two holes at the bottom corner for a lanyard cable. The Nokia XR20 has a red button at the top and at the other end is what we believe is the SIM tray.

While Nokia has equipped the phone with ZEISS lenses, there are only two cameras on the back of the phone. Below them are two LEDs for flash and all are placed in a protruding squircle camera housing. It is a welcome deviation from the cookie-shaped camera housing that graces the back of several other Nokia phones.

The specs and price of the phone are still unknown. Once we have more details, we will update the post.

Acer to launch smart TVs in India: Report

Acer is a well-known brand for computing products. The Taiwanese company has its presence in almost all nations and sells a wide variety of products. According to the latest information, the firm may soon enter the smart TV category in India.

Acer Logo Featured A

According to a report by 91Mobiles, Acer will soon launch its smart TVs in India. As per the sources of the publication, these televisions will debut in the country before the Diwali festive season.

Unfortunately, the report does not mention anything about these products. We neither know the specs nor the sizes it will come in. But since Acer is known for affordable products, we can expect its TV models to be targeted at budget-conscious buyers.

In other words, the upcoming Acer smart TVs will likely compete against the televisions from Xiaomi, TCL, OnePlus, and realme to name a few. Like these brands, Acer might also use Android TV operating system with support for the leading streaming services.

As far as sizes are concerned, we can expect these smart televisions to arrive in sizes ranging from 32-inch to 55-inch. The company might even release a 65-inch variant as its popularity is growing.

Since the launch timeline for Acer smart TVs in India is said to be before Diwali, they could launch as soon as next month (August) or as late as a few weeks before the festive season.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3 camera specs leaked

Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event is less than a month away but the leaks are still pouring in and will likely continue until the launch date. The stars of the event will be the Galaxy Z Fold3 and the Galaxy Z Flip3, and if you have been wondering what camera sensors they will be packing, then you are in luck.

Samsung Galaxy Flip3 and Galaxy Z Fold3

Popular leaker, Evan Blass (@evleaks), has revealed the camera configuration of the two foldable phones. The leak discloses that the two devices will have the same number of cameras as their predecessors and even the same pixel count, save for only one sensor on the Galaxy Z Fold3.

According to the source, the Galaxy Z Flip3 will have two 12MP sensors on the back just like the Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Flip 5G. As seen in renders, the sensors are stacked on top of each other this time along with the LED flash. Samsung is also keeping the front-facing camera at 10MP.

For the Galaxy Z Fold3, we will be getting three 12MP sensors on the rear just like the Galaxy Z Fold2. The front-facing camera on the cover display also remains unchanged at 10MP but the under-display camera is a 4MP sensor! A lot of folks won’t be happy with that but we don’t expect to see a lot of users take selfies with this camera as there are better alternatives such as the 10MP cover selfie camera and the rear cameras if you unfold the device and have the rear cameras facing you.

Aside from the camera specs, Evan Blass also confirmed the display sizes of the two phones. The Galaxy Z Flip3 will come with a 1.9-inch cover display and a 6.7-inch internal display while the Galaxy Z Fold3 will have a 6.2-inch cover display and a 7.6-inch internal display. There is also an attached press render that confirms that the two foldable phones have an IPX8 rating as revealed in an earlier leak.

We already know that the Galaxy Z Fold3 will have support for stylus input. Now we know that Samsung will sell two different S Pens for the foldable – the S Pen Pro and the S Pen Fold Edition.

Redmi K50 & K50 Pro renders & other key details surface online

Some new details may have emerged relating to the upcoming Redmi K50 and K50 Pro smartphones, as shown by renders from a China-based tipster. The new Redmi K50 and K50 Pro are billed for unveiling in early 2022 with rumors pointing to a launch before February 2022.Redmi K50

In addition, some current leaks by tipsters Bald Panda and Digital Chat Station indicate that the three scheduled models in the K50 series (the K50, K50 Pro, and K50 Pro+) will utilize Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipset, with up to 67W charging potential guaranteed. The design will have E5 luminescent material with a 2K display and 120Hz refresh rate.

The new renders also indicate that the K50 lineup bears some close semblance with Huawei’s P50 concerning the camera housing setup. It seems that a centered punch hole camera may be in the offing for the front-facing camera, although this remains in the realm of speculation. Others have posited that an under-display camera may take the position of the centered punch hole, although this is highly improbable. The rear camera setup will also sport a bump, and this also finds close semblance with the Huawei P50.

Xiaomi had previously provided some teasers on the flagship Redmi K50 series, better screen quality on offer, and improved charging speeds. Xiaomi has enjoyed a great relationship with chipmaker Qualcomm and is usually among the first smartphone manufacturers to launch Qualcomm’s new products, as predicted for the new chipset from Qualcomm – the Snapdragon 865.

Several key specs of the Realme K50 series are still lacking at this time. However, we are still far away from the projected launch of the devices, as Xiaomi is currently gearing up for the launch of the K40 series.

Realme 8i and Realme 8s launch in the pipeline, suggests tipster

Realme has three models of the Realme 8 in the Indian market – the Realme 8, Realme 8 Pro, and Realme 8 5G. Now, the Chinese smartphone giant is touted to launch two more 8-series phones in the country dubbed Realme 8i and Realme 8s. The tipster stated, “8, 8i, 8s”, hinting at the upcoming Realme 8-series phones. While the Realme 8 is already available, the Realme 8i and 8s are the phones expected to arrive in the coming weeks.

Adding to this leak, a previous TENAA certification about a Realme phone with model number RMX2205 surfaced online. Since the device is still unknown, it is believed to be either the Realme 8i or Realme 8s smartphone.

Moreover, a publication claimed that the Realme 8i passed a Columbian certification but it has the model number RMX3151. The same device also visited other certifications including TKDN, IMEI, and EEC hinting that its launch is in the pipeline.

Realme 8i

Regarding the specs, the RMX2205 appeared on TENAA earlier. It seems to have a raging design with its ‘DARE TO LEAP’ branding at the back. The smartphone is expected to be a 5G handset with a 6.43-inch AMOLED display. It is said to be a dual-SIM phone with a 4,400mAh battery.

On the other hand, the RMX3151 phone’s listings didn’t reveal anything other than its presence.

With multiple certifications incoming, the launch of both of these phones seems to be in the pipeline. We can expect the company to break the silence soon.

With that being said, as per the picture, the upcoming Mi MIX series smartphone will indeed feature an under-display camera. Design

The design is the key point of the Realme GT Master Explorer Edition and it is naturally a lot more attractive than the OnePlus Nord 2 5G. The handset comes with a leather back designed by the known Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa which reminds of a suitcase. Realme GT Master Explorer Edition also comes with a curved display at the edges making it even more elegant and futuristic. The OnePlus Nord 2 5G has a more traditional design with a glass back and a flat display, but it also offers a slightly more compact body. The Realme GT Master Exploration Edition naturally wins the design comparison.

Display

Realme GT Master Explorer Edition and OnePlus Nord 2 5G pack great AMOLED displays with the HDR10+ certification, a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, and an in-display fingerprint reader. Both the panels sport a good color accuracy and provide a similar level of quality, but the Realme GT Master Explorer Edition has a higher refresh rate: 120 Hz vs 90 Hz. This is the only reason why I would go for this handset if I had to choose the most advanced display. Note that there is another important difference between these displays: as mentioned in the previous paragraph, the Realme flagship has a curved screen, while the Nord 2 5G has a flat panel.

Specs & Software

Realme GT Master Explorer Edition and OnePlus Nord 2 5G are powered by two different chipsets: Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 and MediaTek Dimensity 1200. Despite these two SoCs are different, they are both flagship-class with similar performance. Even though the Dimensity 1200 is built with a more advanced production process (6 nm vs 7 nm), the Snapdragon 870 is actually more powerful in terms of CPU and GPU performance. So, while the former should provide a better performance, the latter should provide a lower energy consumption. The memory configurations are the same: either 8 or 12 GB of RAM and 128 of 256 GB of internal storage. The phones run Android 11 customized by Realme UI and OxygenOS, respectively.

Camera

Even when it comes to the camera departments, these devices have a lot in common. Despite hitting the shelves with the same camera app, these devices have the same main camera sensor: a Sony IMX766 with a 50 MP resolution and OIS. Even the front camera is the same 32 Megapixel sensor. What makes the Realme GT Master Explorer Edition a better camera phone than the OnePlus Nord 2 5G is the ultrawide sensor, with a 16 MP resolution instead of just 8 MP.

Battery

The two internal rivals come with exactly the same battery capacity and the same fast charging technology with a power of 65W. So which one will provide the longest battery life? We still did not test the battery life of these handsets, but after reading the specs on the paper, the OnePlus Nord 2 5G should last more. The OnePlus flagship killer has a processor with a more efficient production process and a lower refresh rate which should result in longer battery life, as long as the software does its job in the best way.

Price

OnePlus Nord 2 5G is priced at €399/$470 in the global market, while Realme GT Master Explorer Edition launched in the Chinese market with a starting price of €380/$450. Given its amazing design, higher refresh rate, and better ultrawide sensor, Realme GT Master Explorer Edition wins this comparison, but we are not considering the prices for obvious reasons.
