Axon 30 Ultra Review: ZTE is BACK!

It’s been a while since ZTE launched its flagship phone, the AXON 30 Ultra. I’m sure you guys are just as curious as us to see how good the high-end phone from ZTE really is. With that in mind, let’s take a look at how it performs.

Axon 30 Ultra Review: Design & Display

When I first saw this phone, I really liked it. It has a square appearance, with the top and bottom cut flat, and the camera module is rectangular but has some details. With the dark gray frosted glass, the whole shape is very calm and elegant.ZTE AXON 30 ULTRA Review 16

This shape reminds me of Samsung’s Note series, but considering that Samsung may not launch a new Note model this year, the AXON 30 Ultra may be one of the most square phones you can buy this year. The camera is color-coated and reflects colorful shades when exposed to light.

ZTE AXON 30 ULTRA weight Review

The 188g weight makes it one of the lightest flagship phones from any brand this year. Honestly, I really like the look and the lightweight feel of the device, but it is not without drawbacks. The bezel is quite prominent, and it can be a bit uncomfortable to hold it for long periods of time. Other than that, I’m very happy with the design.

ZTE AXON 30 ULTRA display Review 20

The AXON 30 Ultra 5G features a 144Hz refresh rate, FHD+, 10bit color depth support screen. The hole punch is in the middle of the screen. Although the screen has no screen protector, the oleophobic layer of the screen is sufficient, so it is very smooth to operate. The upper and lower bezel is almost equal in width, but it is not on the same plane as the screen, so it cuts your hand when sliding. Although the supplier of the screen is not Samsung, it still uses diamond-like pixels.

ZTE AXON 30 ULTRA diamond pixel Review 01The fingerprint recognition area is situated a bit higher than usual, and it is more comfortable when unlocking. In short, AXON 30 Ultra’s screen is average for a flagship, not particularly outstanding to wow people, but it has no obvious shortcomings for users to complain about.

Axon 30 Ultra Review: Hardware & Gaming

Since it is called the Ultra, the phone naturally features top-end hardware like the Snapdragon 888, UFS 3.1, and LPDDR5.

ZTE AXON 30 ULTRA hardware In the AnTuTu Benchmark, the phone scored 790011, while in 3D MARK it scored 5857. The Geekbench 5 scores were 1125 for single-core and 3575 for multi-core. The Benchmark scores are the usual level for flagship phones.

Next, let’s take a look at the gaming performance. The frame rate curve of PUBG is very smooth, which means that the most basic cooling measures are implemented without any problems. The Axon 30 Ultra uses a 2880mm2 liquid cooling plate, which seems to have made a significant difference in the extreme gaming tests.

ZTE AXON 30 ULTRA PUBG Gaming Review 05Genshin Impact’s frame rate curve is not as stable as PUBG’s, but the average frame rate of 52fps and the absence of sudden and significant frame rate drops make for a good gaming experience. Brightridge’s gaming performance is also similar to Genshin Impact.

ZTE AXON 30 ULTRA Genshin Impact Review 06Of course, it has the same shortcomings as the other Snapdragon 888 phones — the phone heats up quite a bit. But since ZTE has chosen to unleash full performance, a temperature increase is inevitable.

ZTE AXON 30 ULTRA heating Review 07

Axon 30 Ultra Review: Camera Performance

The camera system of AXON 30 Ultra is very interesting, three of the four lenses are all main camera level lenses. They are 64MP main camera, 64MP portrait lens, 64MP ultra-wide lens. The last one is an 8MP 5x telephoto lens.

ZTE AXON 30 ULTRA camera featured Review 08

Main Camera

The main camera, even with the AI tuning, is not too gaudy, HDR is moderately strong, the details are plentiful, the white balance is stable, and the finished photo style is of the type that is stable, without mistakes. At night, AXON 30 Ultra’s auto mode is not integrated with any night mode algorithm, so you can see that the auto mode photos are faithfully restored to what the naked eye sees, and the dynamic range of the photos is relatively small. However, once the night mode is turned on, all aspects of the photos are improved tremendously. The noise is also less while retaining details, which already belong to the first tier level of flagship phones.

Ultra-Wide Camera

The ultra-wide camera has basically the same tuning as the main camera. However, because the hardware is weaker than the main camera, the exposure in low lighting scenes is also a bit darker and there will be more noise.

Portrait Lens

The AXON 30 Ultra’s portrait lens is not the same kind that other phones use to assist with bokeh, rather it is called a portrait lens because it is close to the equivalent 35mm focal length. However, to take 35mm equivalent photos, you need to manually slide the adjustment to 1.3x or switch to portrait mode to achieve it, the default mode gives you a 2x zoom button. The bokeh algorithm is not very effective if the portrait mode is not a human subject, so generally, I use this lens as a 2x telephoto. This lens works very well at 2x zoom, and the results at night are not bad. In addition to the noise limited by the hardware, exposure has been at par with the main camera.

Telephoto Lens

The last 5x telephoto lens performs well in the daytime. But at night, when the lighting goes down, the image may turn out to be blurred. Plus, it doesn’t have night mode, so it’s better to avoid using it if the light is too low.

I think the advantage of the AXON 30 Ultra’s image system is that it has a full range of focal lengths, so you can choose the right focal length to compose a picture, no matter how close or far. This is very friendly for photography enthusiasts.

Video

ZTE AXON 30 ULTRA video Review 09

Because all three lenses are at the main camera level, except for the 5x telephoto, they are all able to record 4K 60fps video. The main camera can support up to 8K 30fps video and can also record HDR video. 5x telephoto intelligently records up to 1080p 60fps video. With strong image stabilization, it is a phone with very good video recording features.

ZTE AXON 30 ULTRA myos 11 Review 10AXON 30 Ultra’s new pre-installed system, MyOS 11, is also a change from the previous design, the UI and icons have become more youthful and vibrant, and the animations are smooth. If you’ve used the global version of MIUI or other Chinese branded custom Android OS, MyOS is very similar to them. But unfortunately, the global version of MyOS 11 is less functional than the Chinese version, for example, the streamlined desktop on the Chinese version is not present on the global version, which is a pity.

ZTE AXON 30 ULTRA Review 11

Axon 30 Ultra Review: Battery Life

AXON 30 Ultra supports up to 65w of charging power. The charger is included in the box, and it is worth mentioning that the charging interface is Type-C and the charging cable sent is also USB-C to C. The charger is very small and supports PPS. And this 65w charger is very small and supports PPS, which is considered to be a better overall quality of the charger that comes with the box.

ZTE AXON 30 ULTRA charging Review 12Charging speed is okay, 10 minutes gets you to 28%, 30 minutes up to 64%, and 52 minutes to fully charge the device. So it looks like the charging tech doesn’t use trickle charge. However, it is rather unfortunate that the flagship is not equipped with wireless charging.

ZTE AXON 30 ULTRA battery life Review 14

Although it is only 188g, ZTE still stuffed a 4600mAh battery. In the real-life battery test, the phone consumed 5% for half an hour of TikTok, 4% for half an hour of online video, 9% for one game of PUBG, 22% and 12% for half an hour of Genshin Impact, and 20 minutes of Brightridge, respectively. So, the battery life is also at a moderate level.

Axon 30 Ultra Review: Verdict

The AXON 30 Ultra is undoubtedly a very well-balanced flagship phone that has almost no particular shortcomings. But if you look at it the other way, it doesn’t have any obvious strengths either. Perhaps the squarish design, the dominant appearance, and the complete range of focal lengths are its more prominent highlights.

But would you buy this phone for these two strengths? Let us know in the comments section down below.

Revolt e-Bike expects a spike in sales of EVs in India’s Gujarat due to the new cash-back policy

The Indian state of Gujarat is implementing an Electric Vehicle policy that aims to provide incentives for renewable energy solutions to the transportation challenges in the state. It will see the state government paying Rs 10,000 per kWh as Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to electric bike customers for every unit that they purchase in the state. The policy takes effect from July 1 and could kickstart a rush for two-wheeler electric vehicles in the state of Gujarat.Revolt RV 400

One company that is hoping to benefit from this policy is Revolt bike which opened shop in the state in 2020. With the Revolt bike having a battery capacity of up to 3.2 kWh, each customer could get above Rs 20,000 when purchasing the electric bike. The Gujarat state EV policy also follows some extensive incentives programs by the national government to engender clean and greener solutions to the transportation challenge. The Central government’s program could also yield up to Rs 15,000 per kWh for the electric vehicle manufacturer. Therefore, a combination of these incentives has made it possible for buyers of Revolt electric bikes in Gujarat to save up to Rs 68,000 for their purchase of the e-bikes.

As could be expected, the incentives regime is bound to drive demand for the bikes to the ceiling, and Revolt is taking steps to ensure that it meets the increased demand expected for the product. With several sales dealership networks slated for opening across the state, Revolt will hope to tap maximum benefit from the new EV policy. In addition, prices for the bikes are bound to go down because of the new subsidy regime. This could lead to more affordable vehicles for a greater segment of the population.

Other states have also begun a similar policy to encourage renewable energy solutions to the country’s transportation problem.

Huawei aims on improving travel experience in self driving cars: Patent

Huawei has just recently published a new patent, which was related to the control system of autonomous vehicles. While smart cars with self driving technology are already available, the company seeks to improve the overall driving and travel experience.

Huawei

According to the patent titled “Smart Car Control Method, Device and Control System,” the Chinese tech giant is working on a smart car control system that could improve the autonomous technology behind self driving cars. As per an ITHome report, the patent also describes a system for controlling smart cars, which is capable of improving the comfort for passengers as well as the driving experience of the self driving smart car.

This system would control the smart car’s driving mode, its driving style, to reach the speed of the vehicle at an optimal level. Once it reaches this optimal speed, it would also shift the driving mode to maintain it. In simpler terms, it would effectively work in real time to make the experience smooth and comfortable for the passengers riding in the vehicle, including the one behind the wheel.

Huawei

Unfortunately, this is still a patent at the moment so finer details regarding this smart control system are currently unknown. Furthermore, it is also unclear if the smartphone maker is actually working on such a product or is just covering all bases. So stay tuned as we will be providing updates when additional information or any notable development surfaces regarding this technology.

Xiaomi might be working on a cheaper alternative to the Apple AirTag

Xiaomi might just be working on its own version of the Apple AirTag. The patent from the company was recently granted and had the title of “Method and Device for Finding Objects.”

The patent has the application number CN106877911B and was first applied back in 2017. This patent is regarding a method and device that is capable of finding items, as reported by ITHome. In other words, the product in question could be used to find lost items of the user. Meaning, it should be similar to or could actually be a smart tag from the Chinese tech giant. In recent times, certain smartphone makers have launched their own iterations of a smart tracker device, including the Cupertino based company, Apple.

Xiaomi

For those unaware, Apple recently launched the AirTag, which is a smart tracking device, that helps users find lost objects or keep track of certain accessories. So, Xiaomi might also be working on a product that offers similar functionality but at a price tag that makes it more accessible to the broader audience. Although, this is just speculation at the moment, so take it with a pinch of salt. Unfortunately, this is still a patent and it is too early to tell if the smartphone maker is actually working on such a product or just covering all bases, so stay tuned for more updates.

These HONOR smartphones will continue to receive software updates from HUAWEI

Realme Q3 Pro Carnival now available offline in 12GB variant with 7GB RAM expansion support

Earlier today (29th June 2021), a tipster on Weibo, a Chinese microblogging website, shared news regarding certain local smartphone makers introducing their own virtual storage expansion technology, which includes Xiaomi, Honor, Oppo, Realme, and others.

realme Q3 Pro Carnival Edition colors

According to an online post by @数码闲聊站, Vivo is using the RAM expansion technology to offer an increase of 4GB of virtual RAM while Realme is offering an impressive 7GB virtual expansion in memory in a smartphone. The model in question is the Realme Q3 Pro Carnival Edition, which is now available in a new 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage variant. In other words, this model would effectively have a combined 19GB of RAM, although, this version is exclusively available only through offline channels, as seen in the official image poster below.

Similarly, Oppo has also just unveiled its new RAM expansion technology for its handsets in MEA (the Middle East and Africa), which will debut with the Reno5 series of smartphones from June 2021. The technology, dubbed RAM+, allows the device to temporarily convert a small part of its internal storage (Read Only Memory or ROM) into virtual random access memory (RAM). On paper. this should effectively boost the overall memory of the device and would help in increasing the device processing power and efficiency.

Realme

Tarek Zaki, Senior Product Manager at OPPO Middle East and Africa, stated that “Users get easily frustrated when their smartphone slows down. RAM+ can alleviate the issue by temporarily increasing RAM during data-heavy tasks such as sharing images or gaming, ensuring a smoother and more stable system running, supporting the phone’s capability.”

Samsung Galaxy M52 5G likely to feature the Snapdragon 778G

Earlier this month, Honor announced the Snapdragon 778G SoC powered Honor 50 and Honor 50 Pro handsets. Speculations are rife the rumored Motorola Edge 20 will also feature the same chip. Fresh information suggests that Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy M52 5G may also feature the Snapdragon 778G SoC.

A previous report had suggested that the Galaxy M52 5G could be a rebadged edition of the Galaxy F52 5G, which was announced in China last month. While the Snapdragon 750G chip powered by the F52 5G, the appearance of the M52 5G at the Geekbench benchmarking platform suggests that it may arrive with Snapdragon 778G. Hence, it now appears that the M52 could be a new CPU variant or an entirely different phone as compared to the F52 5G.

The Galaxy M52 5G has emerged with its SM-M526BR on the benchmarking site. The listing reveals that it has 6 GB of RAM, and it boots to Android 11 OS. The “lahaina” codename mentioned in the motherboard field in the listing belongs to the Snapdragon 888. However, the Adreno 642L GPU mentioned in the source code of the listing suggests that the phone has Snapdragon 778G, and not the SD888.

The handset scored 776 and 2877 points in the single-core and multi-core tests of Geekbench, respectively. The other specifications of the phone are under wraps.

Samsung Galaxy F52 5G specifications

Samsung Galaxy F52 5G

Apple reportedly made body cams mandatory for employees to stop leaks

Apple is apparently making it mandatory for its employees to wear “police grade” body cameras to stop leaks. The company has made this move in an effort to stop the spread of sensitive proprietary information.

Apple

According to a FrontPageTech report (Via CultOfMac), the Cupertino based giant is pushing ahead with body cams to stop internal information from surfacing in the press. Reportedly, certain employees of the company are now required to wear a body camera similar to the Axon Body 2, which is the model used by many police forces. This aggressive move from the company is its latest effort to ensure its hardware trade secrets are kept from leaking out.

As per the report, body cameras are not required by every employee but only those working with certain product teams. These are quite likely related to the unreleased hardware/products, although, it is unsure as to how Apple deploys these body cameras to prevent possible leaks. The very leak regarding the iPhone maker forcing body cameras implies that the new effort might not be as effective in stopping internal information from leaking out.

Interestingly, Apple is allegedly even going after certain tipsters regarding their leaks. This includes Front Page Tech’s Jon Prosser, who released a video stating that the company is taking steps against him. Jon further added that “I’ve never paid a source. No money has ever exchanged hands. No transactions have happened. And I’ve always made clear to employees that they are under no pressure to give me information.”

Samsung Galaxy Buds2 Price (Rumored)

Probably, the upcoming Samsung TWS earbuds will carry support for ANC (Active Noise Reduction), and not ANC.

Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 Renders Leak 01

Nokia 105 4G with Alipay support launched in China for only ¥229 ($36)

HMD Global has launched a new feature phone in China. This device is called Nokia 105 4G and it was first announced for global markets two weeks back. The main highlight of the handset is support for LTE connectivity and Alipay (only China). The phone can be considered as a successor to the Nokia 105 (2019), which was followed by Nokia 105 (2017) and Nokia 105 (2013) respectively. That said, let’s take a look at what the new model has to offer.

Nokia 105 4G Specifications and Features

The newly unveiled Nokia 105 4G looks different than its predecessors. The new model features flat sides, however, the top and bottom remain curved. For comparison, the previous two models sport a pebble-like design.

The phone arrives in three colors, namely Dark Blue, Red, and Black. It is made of polycarbonate, measures 121 x 50 x 14.5mm in dimensions, and weighs around 80.2g.

The device comes with a 1.8-inch QVGA LCD panel. It is powered by a UNISOC T107 chipset and boots Series 30+ operating system. Other features include an LED torch, 3-in-1 speaker, readout, FM radio (wired and wireless), 3.5mm headphone jack, and a MicroUSB port.

Unlike its predecessors, the all-new Nokia 105 4G supports LTE connectivity as well as Alipay. However, it is worth noting that users will require a smartphone to set up the mobile payment feature. As mentioned in the beginning, these two features are the main highlight of this handset.

As usual, HMD Global is targeting the elders with the Nokia 105 4G. The phone is backed by a 1,020mAh removable battery. The company claims up to 18 days standby time on the single SIM variant with 2G connection and 14 days on LTE connection.

Nokia 105 4G Price and Availability

The Nokia 105 4G is priced at ¥229 ($36) in China. Interested customers can pre-order it starting today (June 29) by depositing ¥10 ($2).

Samsung Exynos chip with AMD GPU outperforms iPhone 12 Pro Max in graphical test

While Samsung had announced that it is working on a flagship Exynos series chipset with AMD GPU earlier this year, the company didn’t reveal any specifics regarding the processor or its capabilities. But now, a new report has suggested that this upcoming chip could outperform the Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max in graphical performance.

According to a tweet from a known tipster IceUniverse, the South Korean tech giant is apparently testing an Exynos chipset with a Radeon GPU and Cortex A77 CPU cores. The tipster shared a screenshot of the 3DMark graphics benchmarking app, in which, an Exynos processor with AMD GPU was spotted scoring 8,134 points in the Wild Life test that had an average of 50fps. This score beats the iPhone 12 Pro Max that sported the Apple A14 Bionic chipset, which scores around 7,442 points with an average frame rate of 40 fps.

At the moment, these benchmark scores appear to be early tests. So, we have no idea regarding the thermal performance of this chipset during these tests and how it performs under heavy load. Although, this is quite notable considering an Android handset has outperformed the top end Apple iPhone. The Samsung chip in question is rumored to be the Exynos 2200, which might even be able to offer better performance since it is expected to arrive with ARM Cortex X2 and Cortex A710 CPU cores, which are newer and faster than the Cortex A77.

Samsung

For those unaware, the upcoming Exynos chipset will feature Radeon GPU that is based on AMD’s latest mobile RDNA2 architecture. Keep in mind, even if this chipset actually is the upcoming chipset, good synthetic benchmarks do not always translate to better graphical performance in real games. So stay tuned for more updates.

Xiaomi’s Snapdragon 895 flagship with 200MP camera could be in works; Could it be Mi 12 series phone?

Yesterday, Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 888+ mobile platform as an overclocked version of the existing Snapdragon 888 chip. Apart from offering faster clocking speeds, the SD888+ is equipped with an improved AI Engine. Companies like Honor, ASUS, Motorola, Xiaomi, and Vivo are expected to launch phones fueled by the Snapdragon 888+ later this year. Today, popular tipster Digital Chat Station shared the key details of the upcoming Xiaomi’s SD888+ powered flagship.

Digital Chat Station’s Weibo post talks about the key features of an upcoming flagship phone featuring the next generation Snapdragon flagship with sm8450 part number. This chip is being tentatively dubbed as the Snapdragon 895 chip by the rumor mill. The emoji of the bunny in the post is a good hint that he could be talking about Xiaomi’s next flagship.

Xiaomi 200MP leak

According to the tipster, the new device will be sporting a punch-hole display with curved edges. He added that it will be equipped with a 200-megapixel lens as the primary camera. Previous reports have suggested that it could be featuring Samsung’s upcoming 200-megapixel sensor. It is unclear whether this phone belongs to the exiting Mi 11 series or some other series.

Other reports have claimed that the 200-megapixel ISOCELL sensor may measure 1/1.37-inch and it has 1.28-micron pixels. It could be equipped with 4-in-1 and 16-in-1 pixel binning technology, and it may allow users to record 16K videos.

Speaking of Xiaomi, a recent leak revealed the codenames of 13 upcoming Xiaomi phones. It has revealed that the company could be announcing as many as three phones with an in-screen selfie camera. Unfortunately, the leak has no information about its Snapdragon 895 powered phone.

Last year, the Mi 11 5G debuted as the first Snapdragon 888 powered phone by the end of 2020. Qualcomm may launch the SD895 chip by the end of the year. Hence, it is likely that the rumored SD895 powered Xiaomi phone could end up as a Mi 12 series phone.
