Panasonic halts some component shipments to Huawei amid US ban

After ARM reportedly stopped all business dealings with Huawei because of technology being developed in the US to comply with the order passed by the Trump administration in the United States, it’s now Panasonic to seize dealing with the Chinese giant.

Japan-based Panasonic has announced that the company has stopped shipments of certain components to Huawei Technologies in order to comply with U.S. restrictions on the Chinese company. In a statement, the company said: “Panasonic has instructed employees to halt transactions with Huawei and its 68 affiliates covered by the U.S. ban.”

While the Osaka-based company does not have a major production site for components in the United States, it said the ban applies to goods having 25 percent or more of U.S.-originated technologies or materials.

However, the company has declined to comment on which components are subject to the ban and where they are getting produced. Panasonic makes a wide range of devices for smartphones, cars, as well as factory automation equipment.

Last week, the U.S. Commerce Department blocked Huawei from doing any kind of business with the US-based companies and buying goods made in the U.S. It is claiming that the firm was involved in activities contrary to national security but has not provided any proof for its allegations.

However, the United States temporarily eased the restrictions on Huawei on Monday, to minimize disruption for customers, for a period of 90 days. During this time, the company can purchase American-made goods for maintaining existing networks and provide software updates to existing Huawei handsets.

OnePlus 7 Pro update on the way to fix “poor” camera performance

Over on the OnePlus Forums, fans have thrown shade at the OnePlus 7 Pro camera quality. Despite the device receiving pretty good reviews for its camera performance, fans have been claiming that device underperforms when it comes to camera performance. It’s gotten to the point that OnePlus staffer JimmyZ has officially responded to the complaints.

According to JimmyZ, the camera performance of the OnePlus 7 Pro is being worked upon constantly. The aim is to bring improvements to the camera with each software update and with the next update, the smartphone will get major improvements in terms of the HDR processing and the Nightscape 2.0 mode.

He also describes the process of testing camera performance, claiming “every time when there is a photo sent to us due to negative feedback, our engineers are requested to find the same light condition and object of same color and texture to simulate the photo in order to reproduce the same problem”.

The product manager also commented that the feedback from the users are being closely monitored and taken seriously. A bulk of the people in the thread responded positively to JimmyZ’s comments as it at least shows that OnePlus is listening and working to make the camera the best it can be.

Huawei ban has started affecting sales across Europe and Asia

After the ban on Huawei by the Trump administration in the United States which bans US-based company from doing business with the Chinese telecom giant, Huawei tried to put on a strong face. However, the company’s business is looking bleak at this moment and the uncertainty about its future is severely affecting the company’s sales.

The UK-based trade-in site Music Magpie revealed that it saw a huge increase in Huawei trade-ins during the 24 hours that followed Google’s announcement of suspending business ties with the company on Sunday. The site reported a surge of 154 percent for the company’s smartphones and, by 1 PM BST on Monday, Huawei devices were being sold more than any other brand.

Huawei

A report from ADSLZone claims that within the space of just 36 hours, over 10,000 Huawei orders were canceled on Amazon’s Spanish website. Moreover, the mega Prime Day campaign that Huawei was planning with Amazon has reportedly been canceled. The company has also suspended all digital as well as retail advertising campaigns in Spain, including those focused on its latest flagship, the P30 Pro.

El Pais reported that sales in local department stores such as El Corte Inglés and Mediamarkt have fallen between 50 percent and 70 percent in Spain since the news broke on Sunday. Further, Spanish customers have returned over 15,000 Huawei devices to Amazon over the past few days.

In the Asian markets, Japan’s Softbank and KDDI have postponed the launch of numerous Huawei devices, including the P30 Lite that was set to go on sale this Friday, May 24th. Like Vodafone and EE in the UK, the reason for this decision is the uncertainty surrounding future device support.

It’s pretty evident that these recent developments are already starting to affect Huawei’s business. Even when the situation improves, the negative impact will likely ease off, but the company will undoubtedly come out with a severely damaged reputation.

However, the US recently eased some aspects of the ban by 90 days, allowing Android OS updates to be certified on existing Huawei and Honor phones.

DJI Airsense will help upcoming consumer drones detect aircrafts

Drones have always been in hot water regarding air safety, especially concerning airplane collisions. Because of this, drone operators aren’t allowed to fly their drones near airports and similar airspaces. DJI‘s finally taking steps to address this with AirSense, a technology that picks up on the ADS-B signals from planes and helicopters in the nearby vicinity.

Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B), which can you read about in more here, will finally allow drones to detect other aircrafts. DJI AirSense will alert drone operators if it has detected a signal from an aircraft located potentially up to miles away. This means you could get a collision warning before you even see what’s coming up ahead. You can find it more in the video from DJI below.

The company claims its support will represent the largest single ADS-B deployment to date, though it’s pretty clear why they’re suddenly pushing this. As of January 1, 2020, the date after which DJI will deploy its new aircraft detection ability, ADS-B Out will be required to fly in the majority of controlled airspace.

If you’re getting a sense of dejavu, it might be because we’e already seen ADS-B detection on some other DJI models. The difference this time is that those were professional models, while this affects all consumer models available that weigh more than 250 grams. Regardless, it’s nice to finally see some improvements from DJI, and we hope this becomes the new standard for all drone companies.

IHS Markit data shows Samsung continues to soar in the SmartTV market in Q1 2019

Market research firm IHS Markit has released its first quarter 2019 survey data for the smart TV market. According to the data, Samsung SmartTV arm continues to dominate the TV segment. Samsung TV’s market share in the first quarter of this year was put at 29.4%, up 0.8 percentage from the same period last year (28.6%), ranking first.

In recent years, the QLED TV market has grown rapidly. According to statistics, the total sales volume of QLED TVs in the first quarter of this year was about 912,000 units. This is over 2.5 times that of the same period last year. A total of 3.367 million units of QLED TVs were shipped last year and with the estimates for Q1, there is the likelihood that this year’s shipment will be higher.

Another premium TV segment, talking about OLED TVs also had an estimated 611,000 units shipped in the first quarter of this year. This represents an increase of 30% year-on-year. In terms of revenue, total sales of QLED TVs were estimated to be US$1.87 billion, while an estimated US$1.365 billion accrued from sales of OLED TVs.

The research data also reveal a love for large-screen TVs by consumers globally. The market share of 69-70-inch TVs has increased significantly. Compared with last year, the market share of 70-inch smart TVs increased from 5.1% to 7.6%, while the market shares of 60-69 inches TVs also increased from 14.8% to 19.1%.

Analysts believe Samsung dominance of the market was largely due to its focus on QLED TV and large-screen luxury TVs. At the end of last month, Samsung Electronics launched a 98-inch ultra-large QLED TV. At this pace, it is difficult for other brands to presently compete with Samsung in the large-size TV market.

We’ll start seeing ads on WhatsApp from next year

Facebook acquired WhatsApp for a staggering $19 billion in cash and stock in 2014, its biggest acquisition ever. Since then, there has been anxiety as to the measures the social media giant hopes to implement in order to monetize the app. Facebook had earlier assured that we won’t be paying to use the app anytime soon. However, WhatsApp users may soon start getting ads served in-app.

Facebook is a profit-driven organization and as such, it was inevitable that we’ll start seeing some type of advertisements inside WhatsApp since the day it purchased the text-messaging app. The social media giant had previously confirmed plans for monetization and has now announced that WhatsApp ads will start rolling out in 2020. The ads will be served on WhatsApp for Android and iOS.

The first set of ads will be featured on the Whatsapp status stories like regular posts. The ads will occupy the entire screen, but rather than displaying the contact’s name WhatsApp will showcase the name of the company. Also, a swipe-up link will be included. It’s unclear presently if Facebook has any further designs for ads inside WhatsApp. Eventually, the company could introduce smaller alternatives that display between chats on the conversations list.

Facebook also rolled out new ads for WhatsApp Business which would see ads linked to the accounts find their way over to both Facebook and Instagram.

Redmi Note 7S will replace the Redmi Note 7 in India

Save for the rear cameras, the Redmi Note 7 (India version) and the newly announced Redmi Note 7S are identical devices.

Redmi Note 7S featured

While Redmi/Xiaomi won’t say, we strongly believe the only reason the Redmi Note 7S exists in the first place is due to supply issues with the 48MP camera. It probably couldn’t get enough when it wanted to launch the Redmi Note 7, so it opted for a 12MP + 2MP dual camera setup instead. Now that there is sufficient supply, it decided to relaunch the phone as the Redmi Note 7S with a slightly higher price tag.

So what happens to the Redmi Note 7? According to Yash Garg (@yash3339), who handles product PR for Xiaomi, the Redmi Note 7S will replace the Redmi Note 7. This means the latter will eventually not be available again. To be honest, we don’t see why anyone will want to buy the Redmi Note 7 when the Note 7S with better cameras costs just INR 1000 (~$14) more.

For those who bought the Redmi Note 7 shortly before the Redmi Note 7S launched in India, we understand that this must be heartbreaking.

Honor 20 Pro vs OnePlus 7 Pro vs Oppo Reno 10x zoom: Specs Comparison

During the last year, a lot of Chinese companies tried to offer something more than affordable flagships. Oppo is finally back in the flagship segment after four years of inactivity with the Find X and, in 2019, with the new Oppo Reno 10x Zoom. Meanwhile, OnePlus changed its strategy and, for the first time, it launched a top-tier flagship: the OnePlus 7 Pro. Even Huawei’s sub-brand, Honor, came up with an advanced version of the Honor 20 which comes with higher-end specs: the Honor 20 Pro. These three devices represent three of the most important Chinese flagships of 2019 and, through this comparison, we will clear your idea about their specifications and potentialities.

Design

All of these devices sport a beautiful and futuristic design: which one you should go for mainly depends on your tastes. In order to get free from display bezels, Honor 20 Pro boasts a punch-hole display with a front camera inside. On the other hand, Oppo Reno 10x zoom and OnePlus 7 Pro come with pop-up front cameras which differ in their form factors: the former has a singular shark fin-like motorized slider, while the OnePlus 7 Pro has a classic pop-up camera just like the Vivo NEX line-up. In each case, you get a wonderful glass back and a high screen-to-body ratio. Some may prefer the Honor 20 Pro because it is way more compact than its opponents, but it has also a smaller display.

Display

When it comes to displays, Honor 20 Pro loses the battle immediately. Besides having a way smaller screen as mentioned above, it has an average IPS panel just like the ones you can find on most of the devices from €200 to €400. The second place goes to the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom which comes with a better AMOLED display showing deeper blacks and more attractive colors; it also integrates an in-display fingerprint reader. But the real winner here is the OnePlus 7 Pro which comes with the most impressive display ever seen on a Chinese phone. It has a high Quad HD+ resolution, a wonderful color reproduction thanks to the HDR10+ standard, and even a high 90 Hz refresh ratio.

Hardware/Software

In its most expensive variant, OnePlus 7 Pro wins even the hardware comparison. It is the only one to come with up to 12 GB of RAM that is the biggest amount of volatile memory ever mounted on a smartphone. Further, it is powered by the best Qualcomm’s chipset: the octa-core Snapdragon 855 running at a max frequency of 2.84 GHz. Right after, there is the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom which is powered by the Snapdragon 855 as well, but it has just 8 GB of RAM in its high-end version. OnePlus 7 Pro has a nearly-stock Android version, while Oppo Reno 10x zoom and Honor 20 Pro have customized user interfaces.

Camera

These handsets are very close when it comes to camera performances, so it is very hard to establish a clear winner because their photo quality varies a lot depending on the scenario. But I personally prefer the Honor 20 Pro due to its more versatile camera department. It has a quad camera composed of a main 48 MP sensor with the brightest focal aperture in the smartphone market: f/1.4. Its secondary sensor is an ultrawide lens which you can currently find on most of the flagship, but there is also a telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom and a dedicated macro camera! A complete camera setup which guarantees amazing shots in every condition. But if we only talk about photo quality, OnePlus 7 Pro is more or less at the same level. And let’s not forget about the Oppo Reno 10x zoom with its amazing 10x hybrid zoom technology (5x optical zoom).

Battery

Finally, the age in which flagships had small, insufficient or average battery is gone. All these handsets come with a very nice 4000 mAh battery which holds for a full day if you do not stress them too much. The battery of the Oppo Reno 10x zoom is slightly bigger (4065 mAh), the phone has to manage a more efficient AMOLED display, so it could be that it will last more than both OnePlus 7 Pro and Honor 20 Pro on a single charge. On the other hand, OnePlus 7 Pro has a much faster charging technology.

Price

Honor 20 Pro starts from €600/$670, OnePlus 7 Pro has a €700/$780 price for the entry-level variant and Oppo Reno 10x zoom starts from €800/$890. With its amazing display, great hardware side and awesome cameras, OnePlus 7 Pro looks more promising and it wins this comparison.

Sony CEO says smartphone arm is an integral part of its business

There are calls from investors for Sony to shut down its mobile phone business since it isn’t profitable. Recently, the phone division (Xperia) was merged with the camera, TV, and audio businesses into a single division called Electronics Products and Solutions. However, Sony’s CEO Kenichiro Yoshida, says the phone arm is an important part of the overall business.

Speaking at a news conference today, Mr. Yoshida said Sony’s consumer electronics hardware business was built with a focus on entertainment, not household appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines. He added that they see “smartphones as hardware for entertainment” which makes it an important part of their hardware business.

The top executive says younger generations don’t watch TVs anymore and their “first touch point is smartphone”. Sony’s latest flagship phone is the Xperia 1 and it launched in China on Monday for about $900.

Redmi K20 stuns in official render, confirms triple camera setup

The Redmi K20 series will launch on May 28. The two phones – the Redmi K20 and Redmi K20 Pro – have been in the news a lot in the past couple of weeks. Redmi has confirmed some key specs and features but today it has shared an official render of the Redmi K20.

Redmi seems to be taking the design of the Mi 9 series up a notch with the Redmi K20. It is hard to describe the finish but we are sure the phone maker will spend a significant part of the launch explaining how they achieved this mesmerizing design.

The phone is mainly red but there are streaks of blue too which we believe will change depending on the angle light rays reflect off it.

The Redmi K20 will have three rear cameras that are arranged in the middle of the phone. The first camera sits separately from the other two and has a gold ring around it. The other two cameras are together in a black housing while a pill-shaped LED sits horizontally below the setup.

Redmi shared a picture of an official case last week, and a few days ago, it confirmed the phone will come with a 48MP Sony IMX586 camera and have support for 960fps super-slow motion recording.

Further down is the Redmi branding and the words “Designed by Redmi”. There is a power button on the right of the phone alongside the volume control buttons. Unfortunately, we can’t make out the ports on the device.
