Honor re-opens bootloader unlocking for its smartphones on a trial basis

Earlier this year, in May, Huawei announced that the company will stop providing bootloader unlocking for Honor smartphones. The company’s decision upset many members of the community but a few of them were working to get the company to change its decision.

Now, in the latest development to that, XD Developers says that Honor has decided to re-open bootloader unlocking on an exclusive number of codes to the XDA Developer community. Currently, the unlock codes are available for download exclusively to XDA Developers on a first-come-first-served basis through this online form.

XDA users, who are interested in this, can apply for the codes using the form and all applicants will have the opportunity to share their feedback. Do keep in mind that it might take a few weeks to receive an unlock code after requesting one, but XDA Developers says that they’ll work with Honor to expedite the process.

The unlocked bootloaders make it easier for the developer to develop and create and to optimize the performance of the device. It also enables users to install a custom recovery, use a custom ROM and to get root access.

The bootloader unlocking processor on Huawei or Honor devices isn’t as simple as on Google or OnePlus phones. For this, the user needs to acquire a bootloader unlock code. So, when the company announced that it’ll stop providing bootloader unlock codes, it was a huge blow to the community. At that time, when asked about the reason for not providing the codes, the Chinese manufacturer had said that its decision is to offer “better user experience and avoid issues caused by ROM flashing”.

Snapdragon 855 Geekbench scores appear; Crosses 10k points in multi-core test

Most of the Android flagship phones that have released so far in this year feature the Snapdragon 845. Qualcomm is now prepping up the Snapdragon 855 as its successor. It is expected to get official by the end of this year. A new Snapdragon SoC with its codename “msmnile” has appeared on Geekbench. Its benchmarking scores are very impressive which suggests its none of Snapdragon SoCs that have launched in the past. Hence, it could be the upcoming Snapdragon 855.

As it can be seen below, the msmnile has scored 3697 in single-core test and 10,469 in multi-core test. The test device on which the msmnile chipset is placed features 6 GB of RAM and it is running on Android 9 Pie OS.

The benchmarking scores achieved by the alleged Snapdragon 855 is quite similar to what iPhone X’s Apple A11 Bionic SoC have managed to achieve on Geekbench. The multi-core scores of the SD855 is on par with Apple A11. However, its single-core is still lower than 4,300 score of A11.

Snapdragon 855 Geekbench

The Cupertino company will be launching its new iPhones on Sept. 12. The upcoming iPhones will be powered by Apple 12 SoC which is expected to deliver even better performance than the A12. The benchmarking scores of msmnile are impressive but may not be comparable to the new 7nm A12 SoC. The msmnile chip has also surfaced at HTML5test in which it has scored 510 out of 555 points.

It is yet to be ascertained whether the msmnile is a chip designed for powering smartphones or something that has intended for Windows devices. Rumors have it that the Snapdragon 855 will be unveiled in December this year and it is likely to be introduced with a new naming scheme. A recent report has claimed that Qualcomm will begin its mass production by the last quarter of this year. The Snapdragon 855 will be the first 7nmm chipset from Qualcomm that will be arriving to take on Kirin 980 which was recently introduced as the world’s first 7nm chipset at IFA 2018. It is speculated that like the Kirin 980, the U.S.-based chip maker will also include a dedicated NPU inside the Snapdragon 855.

What do you think about the benchmarking scores of msmnile? Could it be the Snapdragon 855? Share us your views by posting your comments below.

Price for Honor 8X leaks, costs over $300

Come Wednesday, Honor will launch the Honor 8X and the Honor 8X Max. Both phones are successors to last year’s Honor 7X. Both devices have already bared their specs on TENAA’s website but now the price of the smaller model, the Honor 8X, has leaked.

The price leak comes from a photo posted on Weibo. The photo shows what appears to be an official Honor store with one of the workers sticking up tags which include specs and price of items sold in the store. One of the tags is that of the Honor 8X and the price on it is ¥2099 (~$308).

Honor 8X price

Although we can’t see the specs written on the tag, we want to believe the above price is for the 6GB RAM + 128GB model and not the 4GB RAM + 64GB base model. The base model should have a lesser price tag.

The Honor 8X will come with a 6.5-inch FHD+ screen with a water-drop notch. It is powered by a 2.2GHz octa-core processor said to be the Snapdragon 660. It will have a 16MP front-facing camera and a 20MP + 2MP dual camera combo on its back.

One of the Vivo X23’s rear cameras is a 125° wide-angle lens

When it comes to dual cameras, phone manufacturers usually go with any of these three main combinations:

  1. RGB + Monochrome configuration like that of the Essential PH-1,
  2. Wide angle lens + Super-Wide angle lens like the LG V30
  3. Wide + Telephoto like the iPhone 7 Plus

It has been reported that Vivo‘s next smartphone, the X23, will go with a wide angle + super wide angle combination. This means the phone will be able to switch to a wide angle mode when taking photos. The wide-angle mode is great when taking pictures where a building or beautiful landscape is the backdrop for the photo.

The super-wide angle camera is said to be a 13MP 125° sensor while the main camera is a 12MP Sony IMX363 sensor. The cameras will have AI features.

Oppo Realme 2 goes on sale in India tomorrow, prices starting from just Rs. 8,990

Less than a week ago Oppo teased the arrival of the second device from its new sub-brand: Oppo Realme 2. The handset, which will be no more than a lower-midrange phone, will be officially available in India starting from tomorrow 4th September. It will be exclusive on the online store Flipkart and it won’t be available offline, at least for the initial period. The device will launch in two color variants: Diamond Black and Diamond Red, as well as two memory configurations: one with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage, and another with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB ROM.

The base configuration of Oppo Realme 2 will carry a price tag of just Rs. 8,990 which roughly translate into about €110 or $130 at the actual exchange rate, while the 4/64 GB variant will cost Rs. 10,990 that is equivalent to €130 or $155. You will also be able to return your current device and get a discount of up to INR 500 on the listing price. With this price, the new device is definitely one of the best choices in the entry-level segment. I consider it even better than Xiaomi Redmi 6A. Even though its price is very affordable, this device comes with a premium design composed of a glass back with a diamond-like finish and a bezel-less notched display.

The display has a wide diagonal of 6.2 inches but the resolution is only HD. But this resolution will improve the power management and it will make the huge 4230 mAh last even more. Besides the large capacity and the efficient display, there is also an AI Power Manager which helps in optimizing consumption. According to the company, Oppo Realme 2 will provide up to 44 hours of talk time. Under the hood, there is an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 SoC, while on the rear side there is a dual camera with 13 and 2 MP resolution.

Samsung to allegedly unveil 1st phone with 4 rear cameras in 2018

After the launch of Huawei P9 Plus and LG G5, having more than one camera on the rear side of the smartphone has become a trend. According to the latest tweet by the known leakster Ice Universe, it seems that there is no doubt: Samsung is preparing a new smartphone with four cameras on the rear side, and it will launch before the end of the year.

If the tweet is to be believed, given the time frame, it will surely not be a flagship phone from the Galaxy S series, and neither a Galaxy Note device because the Note 9 has been unveiled last month. If we exclude the Galaxy S and Note line-ups, the most important one is definitely the A-series, so the upcoming smartphone with four rear cameras may be the Galaxy A9 (2019).

However, we cannot exclude the possibility that the tweet may refer to a Samsung device with four cameras in total, so a dual camera setup on the back and two cameras for selfies. But the way Ice Universe presented the tweet, it’s likely hinting at four cams together instead of a 2+2 combination.

AnTuTu releases list of best performing smartphones for August 2018

As is the tradition with benchmark site AnTuTu, a list of the best smartphones in terms of performance has been released. This list is for the month of August and only covers Android devices.

At the top of the list is Xiaomi’s Black Shark gaming smartphone. The Snapdragon 845-powered device has an AnTuTu score of 292,887 points. The Black Shark packs 8GB of RAM but also has a 6GB variant. It uses liquid cooling to prevent the device from heating up when in use.

AnTuTu August 2018

Next on the list is the Meizu 16th. This is Meizu’s latest flagship released in August and it’s interesting to see it close to the top on its very first appearance. Just like the Black Shark, it has a Snapdragon 845 processor under its hood and also uses liquid cooling tech. The Meizu 16th scored 291025 points – roughly 2000 less than the Black Shark. The bigger version, the Meizu 16th Plus has a higher score but didn’t make it to the list due to insufficient sampling according to AnTuTu.

Grabbing the third spot is Smartisan’s Nut R1 flagship with 289490 points. This is yet another interesting device from China and one that will likely not make it out of the country (officially).

The Vivo NEX with its pop-out front-facing camera is at the 4th position with 286,286 points while Xiaomi’s Mi 8 Explorer Edition follows closely with 286268 points. The OPPO Find X is sixth on the list with 285,344 points.

The OnePlus 6 is at the 7th position but may end up getting pushed down further next month when devices like the Meizu 16th Plus and the soon-to-be-announced Nubia Z18 make the list.

The Snapdragon 845 version of the Samsung Galaxy Note9 is at the 8th spot while the Mi 8 and Mi MIX 2S close the top ten list with 272,527 and 265,256 points respectively.

Camera sample shows the Nubia Z18 is great at taking night sky photos

The Nubia Z18 launches in a few days. One of the features of the flagship is its dual rear cameras – a 24MP + 8MP combo. Ahead of its release, a photograph taken with the phone has surfaced online showing off what its cameras are capable of.

The picture was originally shared on Weibo by the chief researcher at China’s Academy of Sciences Dr. Deng Licai (@Astroman201410) and then reposted by Nubia‘s own CEO, Ni Fei. The photo is of a star-filled night sky with the Milky Way visible. The picture is a 30-second long exposure shot and it sure is beautiful.

Apart from the pixel count, we have no other information about the sensors such as the aperture size. However, that should be revealed when the phone launches on Wednesday.

The Nubia Z18 will come with a 5.99-inch screen with a water-drop notch. It will have a Snapdragon 845 processor, up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. An 8MP camera will sit within the notch.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 Slider design shown off in a leaked video!

Just a couple of hours ago, Xiaomi confirmed that it had successfully tested 5G data connection on its full screen device. The photo released by the company CEO revealed a full screen smartphone, and we guess that its the same slider phone that was shown off by the company a couple of days back. While we know that this will be a manual slider unlike the one on OPPO Find X or the Vivo Nex, we haven’t seen the slider in action, until now. But a few minutes back, a smartphone running MIUI with a full screen slider design was shared on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, revealing the slider motion in action.

The video reveals a smartphone running MIUI with a slider design and a full screen display. The person holding the phone was kind enough to show us the slider motion in action. The design seems to be quite robust as he wasn’t exactly cautious while sliding the phone up and down. Even the sound makes us believe that the design could be quite tough, which makes sense given that it has to go through our regular smartphone usage, which includes occasional drops and spills. The slider also seems to house multiple sensors including cameras. However, we don’t have any concrete details about the setup.

We guess the phone in the video could be a prototype of the Mix 3 that’s expected to launch sometime later this year. Since Xiaomi officials are no longer shy to reveal details about its upcoming phones, we should get more information about the device in the coming weeks.

Google Pixel 3 XL Black variant unofficially poses for the camera

Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are expected to be the first smartphones that would run Android 9.0 Pie out of the box. The models have already appeared severally in leaks and that isn’t likely to end until Google official lift the veil covering the models on October 9. Before that happens, the Pixel 3 XL live photo has once again appeared online and this time around it is a black coloured variant.google Pixel 3 XL

The model was reportedly spotted by an unnamed drive for Lyft, a ridesharing outfit, at the back of his car not long after dropping off some passengers. This is likely a pre-production unit and could be different from the final launch units but with the rate at wish the next-gen Google Pixel models have appeared in leaked photos and videos, we doubt if there is much surprise on the design aspect. The present leaked unit is similar to the ones we have seen in the past but the smartphone appears to have a transparent protective cover on. It retains the wide notch at the top as well as a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. The device also comes with a single rear camera which is all but confirmed.Pixel 3 XL

Xiaomi successfully tests 5G signals on its full screen slider phone

5G is the big thing in communications right now and phone manufacturers are hard at work doing signal tests. Most manufacturers won’t release a 5G device until next year but the signal tests are already being carried out to ensure they are ready ahead of release.

Xiaomi 5G testing with slider phone

Xiaomi is the latest phone maker to confirm it has successfully conducted 5G tests. The info was shared on Weibo by Xiaomi’s president, Lin Bin, and it shows the test device which is one we have seen before. For those who don’t recognize the phone, that’s the yet to be released Mi MIX 3.

Last week, Mr. Lin Bin shared a photo of the Mi MIX 3 on Weibo shortly after Honor did a brief reveal of the coming Magic 2 smartphone. The Mi MIX 3 and the Magic 2 share design similarities. Not only are they full-screen phones, they also have a slider mechanism.

The same 5G testing photo has also been shared on Twitter by Xiaomi’s global spokesman, Donovan Sung.

While the image shared last week looked more like an official render, this new image is a live photo. Sadly, it doesn’t show the device slid-open. From the image, we can see Xiaomi is testing the popular 5G band – band N78 (20MHz). There is also a second band (Band N257 – 100MHz). The former band is the same one OPPO used for its own 5G test last week.
