Oppo R15 is the bestselling smartphone model in Q2 2018 in China

According to the report released by Counterpoint Research, Oppo R15 is the bestselling smartphone in China’s domestic market in the second quarter of this year with around 5 percent of the market share.

The Oppo R15 is followed by Vivo X21, iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus, and Honor 7C. While Vivo X21 managed to grab 4 percent market share, the Apple iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus and Honor 7C — all three has about 3 percent market share.

The report mentions that sales for Oppo and Vivo’s latest flagship devices have performed better compared to its previous generation devices, mainly due to more differentiation in terms of design, such as under-display fingerprint sensor. The report attributes the success of Honor 7C to its aggressive pricing.

In terms of the overall market share, Huawei grabs the top position with about 26 percent market share, thanks to 22 percent year-on-year growth. This is the highest ever market share received by Huawei so far. The company’s sub-brand Honor became the leading and most popular, beating Xiaomi, which also helped Huawei grab the top spot.

Oppo is at the second spot with around 19 percent market share, followed by Vivo, Xiaomi, and Apple which has 18 percent, 13 percent, and 9 percent market share, respectively. To expand and grow its market share, Xiaomi has now been focusing on expanding its offline presence.

The report adds that Oppo and Vivo have expanded their presence in the premium smartphone market with the launch of Oppo Find X and Vivo Nex, both of which comes with a unique smartphone design having motorized camera sensors that elevate when needed. The competition in the premium segment is expected to get intensified as Apple and Huawei will launch their flagship phones in the latter half of this year.

Various smartphone OEMs are expected to debut new flagship phones in the second half of the year. An industry insider from China with well-known track record on leaked information on forthcoming phones has shared the list of flagship smartphones that are slated to debut this year.

August

The Meizu 16 series that includes Meizu 16 and Meizu 16 Plus smartphones are expected to go official on Aug. 8. The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is slated to go official on Aug. 9. The Smartisan Pro 3 and OPPO R17 are rumored to go official later in this month. The 360 N7 Pro is likely to get announced later in August or September.

September

The LG V40 ThinQ is expected to get unleashed in September. A recent report has revealed that after its unveiling in September, the company release it in the market in early October.

The 2018 iPhones will be also arriving in September. Recent reports have suggested that the two upcoming OLED iPhones may debut as iPhone 9 and iPhone 9 Plus. The company is also expected to announce LCD iPhone in September. Since the predecessor Google Pixel phones were unveiled in October, it is likely that this year also the company may follow the same launch pattern. The Nubia Z19 and Huawei Mate 20 series that includes Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro are poised to get unveiled by mid-October.

By mid-November, OnePlus may announce the OnePlus 6T smartphone. Honor may rival it by launching the Honor V11 smartphone around the same time.

December

360 Mobiles may announce the 360 N8 flagship by mid-December. Honor may introduce the Honor Magic 2 as the successor for Honor Magic that was announced in December 2016. The leakster has further claimed Apple 12 that powers the forthcoming 2018 iPhones is a 7nm SoC. The 7nm Kirin 980 SoC is expected to fuel Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro, Honor V11 and Honor Magic 2 smartphones. Rest of the phones are speculated to feature the 10nm Snapdragon 845 SoC. However, it seems unlikely that the OPPO R17 and Vivo X22 will arrive with SD845 SoC.

Huawei Mate 20 major leak reveal details on display, battery, SoC and more

Just as the Huawei’s P20 series with three smartphones such as P20, P20 Pro and P20 Lite were unveiled earlier this year, the company is expected to debut Huawei Mate 20 series with Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro and Mate 20 Lite phones later this year. XDA Developers has come across the firmware files of Huawei Mate 20 that has not only revealed vital information of the smartphone, but also it has unearthed few information on Mate 20 Pro and Mate 20 Lite smartphones.

Through the leaked firmware files, it has been revealed that the Huawei Mate 20 may arrive with a 6.3-inch AMOLED screen. The publication claims that it is yet to be confirmed whether the smartphone features a notch or not.

There is no information available on the display size of Mate 20 Pro and Mate 20 Lite. Since P20 and P20 Lite have same sized 5.84-inch displays, it is likely that the Mate 20 Lite may feature a 6.3-inch screen like Mate 20. A previous report has claimed that the Mate 20 Pro may feature a massive display of 6.9 inches.

Huawei will be unleashing the Kirin 980 as the first ever 7nm chipset for smartphones at the IFA 2018 tech expo at the end of this month. Through the firmware files for Mate 20 it has been known that it will be featuring at least 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. Since Honor has recently launched smartphones with 8 GB of RAM such as Honor 10 GT and Honor Note 10, GizmoChina speculates that the Mate 20 Pro may feature an 8 GB RAM variant.

XDA Developers has speculated that Huawei Mate 20 Pro may arrive with in-display fingerprint scanner. Also, it is expected to arrive with triple rear cameras. A recent report has revealed Huawei may offer a regular capacitive fingerprint reader n the Mate 20. The upcoming Mate 20 series are expected to run on Android 9.0 P based on EMUI 9.0.

The publication has further stated that the HMA-AL00, HMA-L09, HMA-L29 and HMA-TL00 are the four variants of the Huawei Mate 20. The Mate 20 Lite have been found to exist in six variants such as SNE-AL00, SN-AL00B, SNE-LX1, SNE-LX2, SNE-LX3 and SNE-TL00. The AL and TL variants mentioned here are meant for the Chinese market. The L09 is a single-SIM international model and L29 is a dual-SIM international variant.

OPPO’s VP Sky Li resigns to become CEO of the now autonomous Realme brand

OPPO unveiled a new sub-brand dubbed Realme in India in May this year. The new sub-brand had as its first model the Realme 1 which was sold exclusively online. That sub-brand has now being freed from the shackles of the main OPPO brand and will now exist as a separate independent brand. OPPO’s Vice President Sky Li has announced that he is stepping down to take over the reins as CEO of the Realme brand.

In a letter to employees of the new Realme brand, Sky Li who was also head of OPPO’s overseas business introduced the new brand and also mentioned that the idea of creating the brand was born at the end of last year. The press release also gave an insight into the brand’s plans and target market. The statement quoted Gartner’s report which identified Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa and some Asian countries as emerging markets and so will be the target of the new brand. The company expects sales to increase by 9% by the end of 2018. Therefore, Realme is planning to provide “products with strong performance and stylish design” in an attempt to capture these emerging markets.

This business model is similar to what Peter Lau did when he left OPPO and registered OnePlus. Of course, OnePlus still remains a BBK subsidiary just like OPPO and perhaps Realme. The difference is that while OnePlus targets the flagship segment, while the Realme target market is the mid-range segment. It is left to be seen how the new brand will fare among brands such as Tecno, Infinix, Gionee, and others that already target these markets.

Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition with a smaller notch spotted on TENAA

Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition turned out to be an instant hit. The device has courted a high level of attention since its launch alongside the Mi 8 and Mi 8SE. The model recently went on sale for the first time and that too as a hit. A new TENAA listing for the device has been spotted and it points to a slightly modified variant.

The Mi 8 Explorer Edition had earlier gotten certified by TENAA but this is obviously a different model as it has a different model number. While the first listing had the model number M1807E8S, the new model has the model number M1807E8A. Apart from that, the design looks quite different. In this case, the front camera looks to be closer to the earpiece on this model whereas it is farther apart on the model already launched.

As you’re aware, the standout feature on the Mi 8 Explorer Edition is the translucent back but the device also comes with 3D Face unlock as well as on-screen fingerprint technology. It is possible this model will not have the 3D face unlock. In addition, this model has a 4GB RAM variant in addition to 6GB of RAM and 8GB of RAM. The Mi 8 Explorer edition was only released with 8GB of RAM onboard.

This model is listed with a 6.21-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 2248×1080 pixels resolution. The device is also expected to pack a Snapdragon 845 chipset. If Xiaomi should launch this in due course, the price tag would likely be lower than the present model which is priced around $530 in China.

Sony’s Q2 2018 results shows smartphone sales dropped to 2 million units

At this particular time of the year, different brands publish their Q2 financial report. While some brands would come out with good news, others would perform below expectations and that is the case with Sony. According to its Q2 financial report released Tuesday, Sony shipped just 2 million phones between April and June (Q2) which is below the 3.4 million units shipped in Q2 2017. This isn’t a good news for a brand that is struggling with the market.

The brand also posted a Q2 2018 revenue of just $1.18 billion in revenue and if compared to the previous year, that is a 27% decline in revenue. This drop in sales can be attributed to the weak performance in the Japanese and European markets, its main strongholds.

As a result of this, the company has lowered its revenue expectations for the year. Before now, the original equipment manufacturer(OEM) projected a revenue of $5.47 billion which would account for 9 million units by the end of 2018, but with this Q2 report, Sony is now planning to slash down it cost so as to make some profit in the remaining quarters of the year.

Alleged OPPO F9 Pro specs leaked, powered by Helio P60

The OPPO F9 Pro is one of two new OPPO phones expected to launch soon. Thanks to teaser posters and leaked images, we know OPPO has redesigned the notch (and screen). It has even named it “Waterdrop Screen” based on the shape of the notch.

Today, specs said to be that of the OPPO F9 Pro have surfaced online. There is no way to confirm they are genuine, so we advise you take them with a pinch of salt.

The F9 Pro is said to pack a 6.3-inch IPS LCD display with a 2280 x 1080 display and Gorilla Glass. That resolution translates into a 19:9 aspect ratio. For the processor, OPPO is going with MediaTek’s Helio P60 chipset and have paired it with 6GB of RAM.

The source says the phone will come with 128GB of storage and will support expansion by up to an additional 256GB. With respect to cameras, the OPPO F9 Pro will come with a 25MP selfie camera and dual 16MP cameras on its back.

The OPPO F9 Pro will run Android 8.0 Oreo, have dual-SIM support, a fingerprint scanner, and support for VoLTE and Indian 4G bands. It will also pack a 3400mAh battery. An official teaser already confirmed it will have support for VOOC fast charging.

8GB ASUS Zenfone 5Z goes on sale tomorrow in Taiwan

ASUS unveiled the Zenfone 5Z back at MWC but as it is typical of ASUS, availability wasn’t until June. In its home country of Taiwan, the variants sold there have just 6GB of RAM. If you have been waiting for the 8GB version, then you should be able to purchase one starting tomorrow.

ASUS itself has announced that the 8GB version of the Zenfone 5Z which has 256GB of storage will be available on August 1 in Taiwan. Although they did not reveal the price, it is believed it will be priced at about NT$16,000 (~$525) based on the price of the same variant in India.

The Zenfone 5Z has a 6.2-inch FHD+ display with an 18.7:9 aspect ratio. It is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 processor. There are dual cameras on its rear in a 12MP + 8MP configuration and an 8MP selfie camera nestled within the notch.

The main feature of the trash bin is the lid which opens automatically using induction. The lid is air tight and so can effectively block odour from coming out thus, it won’t attract flies. The device comes with a smart sensor which detects the human hand or other approaching objects within a distance of 0-35cm. When it senses and object, the lid swings open and so you won’t need to touch it at all or even bend over. The smart trash bin can also automatically package the waste when it is full. It can also automatically replace the waste bag when the old one is removed.

In terms of dimension, it is 40cm high, weighs 3.5kg and has a 15.5L capacity with a beige appearance. The product is priced at just 199 yuan ($29) and as stated, it is on crowdfunding on Xiaomi Youpin. The fundraiser has been a massive success as the product has raked in over 11,000 support. It is expected to ship on September 11.

Xiaomi Mi A2 will be Amazon exclusive in India, launching on August 8

Xiaomi recently launched its new Android One smartphone — Mi A2 and Mi A2 Lite. The company has already scheduled a launch event in India on August 8 where it’ll launch the Mi A2. Now, it has been revealed that the phone will be available exclusively via Amazon India.

Previous reports have revealed that the phone’s basic model with 4GB RAM and 32GB storage won’t be launched in India. Further, the Indian unit of the Mi A2 will support Quick Charge 4.0 instead of Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0.

The Mi A2 features a 5.99-inch Full HD+ IPS LCD display with 2160 x 1080 pixels and 2.5D curved glass. Under the hood, the device is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 octa-core processor along with Adreno 512 GPU.

In India, the smartphone will be launched in two variants — 4GB RAM with 64GB internal storage and 6GB RAM with 128GB internal storage. There’s also a microSD card slot that enables users to further expand the phone’s storage capacity.

Coming to the camera department, the phone sports a 12-megapixel primary camera with Sony IMX486 sensor, LED flash, f/1.75 aperture and a 20-megapixel secondary sensor with Sony IMX376 sensor with f/1.75 aperture. On the front side, there’s a 20-megapixel snapper with Sony IMX376 sensor with Soft-LED flash.

The phone comes with a fingerprint sensor on the back panel. Connectivity options on the device include Dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 ac (2.4GHz / 5GHz), Bluetooth 5 LE, GPS + GLONASS, and USB Type-C. As the Mi A2 is a part of Google’s Android One program, the phone runs on stock Android 8.1 Oreo operating system out of the box and is powered by a 3,010mAh battery.

The Indian variant of Mi A2 will see the addition of fourth color option — Rose Gold, along with Gold, Black, and Blue colors. In Europe, the phone is priced at 249 Euros (approximately $291 / Rs. 20,000), but we expect India pricing to be lower.

Samsung’s profit lingers in Q2 2018 due to poor sales of the Galaxy S9

The smartphone market today isn’t like what it used to be in years before now. Lots of brands are trooping in with amazing devices giving the older brands a good run for their money. Samsung just released its financial report detailing the firm’s earnings for the second quarter of 2018. The report shows the company made a gross earning of KRW58.48 trillion (around $52.2 billion) in sales. On the other hand, the company’s operating profit is reported to be KRW 14.87 trillion. This is slightly lower than the profits recorded in the first quarter of 2018 but almost on par with Samsung’s earnings in Q2 2017.

Samsung attributed the slight drop in its profits in Q2 to the low demand and sales of “smartphones and display panels”. Samsung’s major smartphone released in the first quarter was the Galaxy S9 models. According to Samsung, the device is not performing well in the market as its sales margin is low.

The low sale of the Galaxy S9 is as a result of competition from lower-priced handsets. Xiaomi and Huawei, has been doing well in this aspect, forming very formidable rivals to Samsung in China, India, etc. The IT & Mobile Communications division which handles Galaxy smartphones experienced a 20% fall in sales from KRW30 trillion to KRW24 trillion on a yearly basis. However, with the expected launch of the Galaxy Note 9 as well as its Galaxy Tab model which should be on sale before the end of Q3, Samsung believes that demand for its tablet and smartphones would increase in the second half of the year.

On the other hand, Samsung experienced an amazing strong profit in its Semiconductor Business (NAND and DRAM memory chips) reaching the highest sales and revenue ever with over 37% of the overall sales and nearly 80% of the total profit for the quarter. With the growing demand for flexible OLED panels, the sale of the chipset is expected to be maintained in the remaining months of the year.
