Xiaomi resumes Mi A1 Android 8.1 update, includes July’s security patch

Xiaomi has resumed the roll-out of Android 8.1 Oreo for the Mi A1. The update first began rolling out a few weeks ago but had a bug that wiped away users’ SMS. This caused the update to be suspended.

Mi A1 Android 8.1 Oreo update

The new update not only brings Android 8.1 Oreo but also comes with July’s security patch, unlike the first one that came with June’s security patch. The update comes in two sizes – 467.3MB for those who didn’t get the first update and 1152MB for those who received the first update with the SMS bug.

The update will roll out over the next few days to all users. So far, there has been no report of any bugs, so you can go ahead and install when you receive it.

Xiaomi Mi 8 no longer has stocking issues: flash sales are longer now

Xiaomi has always employed the use of flash sales for most of its new devices. The reason for this is usually due to its limited stock. The same method is being used for its latest flagship, the Mi 8. However, things seem to have improved since it went on sale over a month ago.

Earlier today, Xiaomi kicked off another flash sale for the Mi 8 but it was out of stock about 2 hours later. Unlike before where buyers had to wait for days before the next flash sale, Xiaomi has announced that the next flash sale will be later tonight – 8 o’clock local time to be specific.

The short interval between both flash sales must mean supply has improved. So if you didn’t get to grab a unit this morning, you should look forward to the next sale tonight.

Mi 8 Flash Sale

The Xiaomi Mi 8 succeeds the Mi 6 from last year. Rather than calling it the Mi 7, Xiaomi decided to go with Mi 8 since this year also marks its 8th year anniversary.

The Mi 8 has a 6.21-inch AMOLED display with a 2248 x 1080 resolution and an 18.7:9 aspect ratio. It is powered by a Snapdragon 845 processor, has 6GB of RAM and 64GB/128GB/256GB of storage.

Apart from the LCD iPhone, the Apple is also expected to introduce two OLED iPhones. One of them is likely to succeed the iPhone X from last year and the other one is expected to arrive as the largest ever iPhone. The rumor mill has dubbed the latter device as iPhone X Plus. Alcatel 5V is Official: Packs Notch, Dual Cameras, Big battery

TCL has announced a new Alcatel phone. The new device, called the Alcatel 5V, belongs to the 5 series but has better specs and an overall better design than the Alcatel 5.

Alcatel 5V

Design

TCL has joined the notch train with the Alcatel 5V. The notch is fairly wide and is home to the front camera, sensor, and earpiece. The bottom has a bit of bezel but still smaller than what you will find on 16:9 phones.

The rear looks nice and has a similar reflective finish to the Alcatel 3 and Alcatel 3V. The reflective appearance is due to a process called Optical Vacuum Plating. It also has dual rear cameras arranged vertically and positioned on the left. TCL has decided not to copy the iPhone X by separating the sensors. It looks odd but distinct from the plethora of Android phones with iPhone X-styled cameras.

Alcatel 5V Specs

The Alcatel 5V has a 6.2-inch 1500 x 720 display with Dragontrail glass on top. With the notch, the phone has a screen-to-body ratio of 88%.

Powering the device is MediaTek’s Helio P22 processor with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. There is an expansion slot for more storage. The rear cameras are a 12MP 1.25um sensor and a 2MP secondary sensor. Like most manufacturers, TCL has added AI features such as scene detection. There is also Google Lens baked into the camera app. The front camera is an 8MP sensor.

Alcatel 5V cameras

The Alcatel 5V runs Android 8.1 Oreo and packs a 4,000mAh battery. It also has a fingerprint scanner and support for face unlock, though it is called Face Key and is said to scan 106 facial key points and unlocks the phone in 0.5 seconds.

Huawei releases EMUI 8.1 update for Mate 10, brings 960fps slow-motion recording

About a month ago, Huawei announced that it would release an update for the Mate 10 that would bring lots of new features such as 960fps slow-motion recording. That update has arrived as EMUI 8.1.

The Mate 10 series launched towards the end of last year with EMUI 8.0 based on Android 8.0 Oreo. Following its release, Huawei has regularly pushed out updates that brought new features to the device.

Back in March, Huawei pushed out an update that brought Face Unlock to the Mate 10. Then in May, another update brought the Huawei P20 Pro’s “long exposure without tripod” feature. June’s update came bundled with GPU Turbo for improved gaming and all-things graphics-related.

With the Mate 10, Huawei has shown that you do not have to buy the latest flagship to enjoy new features.
