Semiconductor giant MediaTek anticipated commencing production of its SoC solutions for wearable devices and IoT applications in 3Q of 2014
MediaTek Inc., a fabless semiconductor company (based in Hsinchu, China), which provides System-on-Chip (SoC) solutions for various devices such as smartphones, tablets, GPS units, Bluetooth devices, Wi-Fi Routers, digital TVs, set-top boxes, and optical drives, among others, has made plans to commence mass production (in the third quarter of 2014, industry sources claim) of its highly-anticipated Aster all-in-one solution.
The Aster, which sources describe as an “all-in-one” SoC which is touted to be very competitive in the market for wearable devices and IoT (Internet of Things) applications, is available as a “platform solution” that incorporates not just reference designs, but also microchips as well as software and firmware.
Designed to be compatible with MediaTek’s tablet and smartphone solutions, the Aster also incorporates, among other things, a Bluetooth chip, memory chip, a MicroControler Unit (MCU), a touchscreen controller IC, and the requisite Input/Output (I/O) interfaces.
At this point, the company is said to be coordinating with several of its top clients in China on issues related to product development, with an anticipated wide range of Aster-powered new products expected to make their way to retail stores by the latter part of the second half of 2014.
China’s Internet Banned The Big Bang Theory,’ U.S. TV shows
The Chinese government has put a stop on online videos of the famous US television show “The big bang theory” and other 3 shows which are “The Good Wife”, “NCIS” and “The Practice,” over the weekends. The question that comes in minds of everybody is that “why this step?”.
These shows were among the licensed programs of china’s top video sites, no justified reason has been given as to why they are being removed.
The CEO Charles Zhang of sohu china’s largest online video providers said that he cannot comment on what has happened in an earnings call. By doing this he declined to elaborate and called it “a standalone event”.
Other major online video companies like Youku Tudou also declined to comment thus showing the tightened policy of their government towards the US shows. This step is a major blow to all the online video companies. These online video companies spend a million to get the legal rights of the shows in order to draw Chinese consumers. These US shows make up less than 10 percent of video traffic said the ceo of sohu.
China has always blocked anti-government and sexual content and has always been on the target of its people for its notorious censorship. Quite recently Chinese authorities blocked online porn. Sina was found to be posting pornographic content was made to apologize in public.
The Country’s top online video sites have US TV shows which have more violence and sexual content then why “the big bang theory” is being targeted. “House of cards” and “The Walking Dead” both having content of corruption in politics and zombie apocalypse are available to the viewers.
Nobody from China’s State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television could be reached for a comment.
Xiaomi is Ready to Challenge Apple
One of the hot smartphone manufacturers out there is Xiaomi, based out of China. It is ready to challenge Apple with plans to sell their products in 10 countries by the end of 2013. The smartphone, known as the Mi3, will be sold in:

- Vietnam
The Xiaomi smartphone is already doing extremely well in several countries. They include:

Why should Apple be concerned? The fact that the Mi3 offered by Xiaomi is far less expensive than the Apple iPhone is just the tip of the iceberg. The Mi3 also has a larger sized screen and a sharper picture. The camera features more pixels and that results in sharper images being captured. With all it offers in comparison to the Apple, it makes sense to go with the Mi3.
Xiaomi has only been in the market of smartphones since 2011, but they have a solid reputation behind them. They are projecting shipping 100 million devices over the span of the next year. They are willing to go where the customers are to allow this growth to happen for the company. They are targeting a market that may have less money, but still wants the perks a smartphone can offer.
Most experts believe that Xiaomi is in the ideal position to market to this audience. They are willing to offer the smartphones at a low profit margin in order to gain new customers. They know if they offer a quality product, those customers will be loyal.
Lenovo and Huawei are Gaining on Apple and Samsung
According to the recent data released by Strategy Analytics, the smartphone market continues to expand. The shipments that have been allocated around the world are 33% higher in the first quarter of 2014 than they were in the last quarter of 2013. This means 281 million more smartphones are in circulation!
What may be surprising to some is that the manufacturers of these top selling smartphones have some competition on their heels. Apple & Samsung are the leaders, but Lenovo & Huawei are gaining on them. These latter two manufacturers are considered to be second tier. However, they continue to offer more and more, and consumers are taking notice. They can get the features they want for a lower price.

There is plenty to smile about in such a facility too as the minimum wage is about to go up very soon. It is going to increase by 14.86% in July of 2014. In addition, the workers will see an increase in other benefits. They include allowances for insurance.
There are many factories located in Jiangsu Providence where the notebooks are manufactured. Many are surprised at the minimum wage hike though and the benefits to those workers. This is because of the shrinking gross margin that has been steadily identified.
The notebook has decreased in price in recent years, making the profits smaller. Add to the mix that there is more competition from China, and that further shrinks the bottom line. A wage increase for these workers is also going to influence the gross profits from notebook sales.

A low-priced Naked-eye 3d phone, the ZOPO ZP600 to be sold for 699 RMB (111.57 USD)
Recently, ZOPO has been releasing octa-core cell phones which use MTK processors. Nevertheless, they haven’t forgotten their naked-eye 3D phones. Not long ago, they were making some improvements on the ZP600 without changing the price.

The ETON P3 goes on sale, has a 3000mA battery and 10-point touch-screen

The XYZ X2 to enter the market, photos leaked
XYZ’s newest phone, the X2 will soon be sold in stores, just half a year since the Z1 was released. Information and photos of the new phone have already been released online.

Lenovo’s dual-branding strategy: Emerging markets to use Lenovo and Motorola to take on Google
According to an April 27 news article at Ubergizmo, this January, Lenovo bought Motorola from Google for 29.1 USD (18.2 billion RMB). We can expect Lenovo to fully take advantage of Motorola’s brand and online success in the market. According to a series of reports from Lenovo regarding Motorola’s new name, Lenovo will use a dual-branding strategy.
This means that the company will continue to sell its mid-range and high-range cell phones in the American and European markets under the Motorola brand, while it will sell its low and mid-range phones in the Chinese and Latin American markets under the Lenovo brand. The reports also state that Lenovo plans to sell 80 million phones this year.
Representatives from Lenovo haven’t made a comment and it looks like they are still considering the name of their new merger. However, dual-branding marketing is definitely a good idea. After all, Motorola was, at one point, one of the biggest retail cell phone companies in the world, and its brand is still going strong. There hasn’t been any official leak, however, from Lenovo regarding Motorola’s new name, and we probably won’t know it until the acquisition is complete.
