Unlike many other apps, it does not impose watermarks on exported videos, making it ideal for creators sharing content across platforms.

The app seamlessly integrates with Instagram, offering real-time performance insights like engagement, skip rates, and audience preferences. This feedback helps creators refine their strategies for better visibility and impact.

Edits also includes AI-driven features, such as automated captions with customization options, voice enhancements to reduce background noise, and animated image tools. Additionally, creators can collaborate by sharing video drafts with friends or collaborators, further enhancing the app’s utility for teamwork and community engagement.

Instagram’s strategic timing for the launch cannot be overlooked. With TikTok facing regulatory scrutiny and CapCut’s temporary suspension, the introduction of Edits positions Instagram to capture creators seeking alternative tools for content production.

The app also complements Instagram’s existing Reels feature, which recently expanded its video length limit to three minutes, offering creators more flexibility in storytelling.

Microsoft’s Xbox Gamble: From Shutdown Talks to Struggles in Achieving Growth

A recent report by The Information has sparked conversations about Microsoft’s long-term plans for its Xbox division. According to the report, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella considered the possibility of shutting down the division in 2021. At a critical decision point, Nadella evaluated whether to exit the gaming market or pursue a path of significant expansion, which ultimately led to the acquisition of major gaming studios Bethesda (for $7.5 billion) and Activision Blizzard (for $75.4 billion).

Microsoft has denied these claims, but the report raises important questions about the division’s performance and future direction. As we know, Xbox hardware sales have seen a decrease, with a reported 29% decline compared to the previous year. In response, Microsoft has been focusing more on its Game Pass subscription service.

Despite this shift in priorities, the Xbox division did not meet its revenue growth targets in 2023, falling short of the 11% benchmark linked to CEO Satya Nadella’s bonus for the year. Notably, Microsoft has stopped tying Nadella’s compensation goals to Game Pass growth, which may signal waning confidence in the Game Pass model.

The company has set a target of surpassing 100 million subscribers by 2030, a substantial increase from the 34 million reported as of February 2024. Reaching this goal would require tripling the subscriber base within five years, with an annual growth rate of 40%.

Microsoft reported a 36% increase in subscriptions since 2022, but this figure has not been independently verified. While the company has celebrated recent successes, including record Game Pass subscription numbers after the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, concerns remain about whether such growth can be sustained.

Opinions on the future of Game Pass vary among analysts and industry observers. Michael Pachter, a well-known analyst, sees potential in the model, stating, “Seventy billion dollars is a big investment. Short-term losses are fine if Game Pass proves to be a reliable source of recurring revenue over time.”

Others are more cautious. Gus Zinn from the Macquarie Science and Technology Fund has expressed doubts about the widespread adoption of the Game Pass model. Developers have echoed similar concerns, with some estimating that premium game sales on Xbox consoles could decline by as much as 80% when their titles are available through Game Pass.

The Realme 14 Pro debuted alongside the Realme 14 Pro+ in India on Jan. 16, 2025. It serves as the successor to the Realme 13 Pro, which was launched in mid-2024. With notable upgrades and some surprising changes, the Realme 14 Pro aims to solidify its position in the competitive mid-range segment. Read on for a detailed review to see how it stacks up against its predecessor and the competition.

It offers a range of display schemes such as Vivid, Natural, and Pro modes for cinematic brilliance. Users can also adjust the screen temperature. The display offers an increased screen resolution of 1.5K and features 3840Hz PWM dimming. With a maximum brightness of up to 4,500 nits, the screen is vibrant and easily visible even under direct sunlight.

The high refresh rate options include Auto-Select, 60Hz, and 230Hz, ensuring smooth scrolling and animations, contributing to a fluid user experience. Audio quality is also commendable. The dual stereo speakers deliver loud and clear sound. While it might not match the audio fidelity of flagship phones, it’s certainly good enough for casual listening and gaming.

The Realme 14 Pro is powered by the Dimensity 7300 Energy chipset, which delivers slightly better performance than the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 that powered the Realme 13 Pro. When it comes to gaming, the company claims support for 120fps in select titles. In my experience with Genshin Impact and Call of Duty, the phone handled gameplay well with no major heating issues after playing each for around 45 minutes.

The 14 Pro is blessed with a massive 6,000mAh silicon-carbon battery that supports 45W charging. The phone easily lasts for two days and takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes to achieve a full charge. It runs on the latest Realme UI 6 and Android 16, with the promise of two major OS updates and three years of security updates. As usual, there are many preloaded apps, some of which can be uninstalled or disabled.

The camera setup on the Realme 14 Pro is perhaps its most controversial aspect. Unlike its predecessors, which boasted multiple cameras with varying focal lengths, the 14 Pro features a 50-megapixel primary camera with OIS and a 2-megapixel monochrome lens. However, the lack of an ultra-wide camera is a glaring omission, limiting versatility. This might deter photography enthusiasts who expect more comprehensive camera options at this price point.

In good lighting conditions, the main camera captures detailed and vibrant images with good dynamic range. The performance in low-light condition is fairly acceptable. The 16-megapixel front delivers decent performance in well-lit environments and also produces impressive portrait shots.

The phone offers 1x, 2x, and up to 20x digital zoom options, along with a portrait mode supporting 1x and 2x zoom. There is an underwater photography mode due to its IP68 rating and support for Live Photo. Video recording includes 4K at 30fps and 60fps, with the Ultra Steady OIS feature capped at 4K 60fps. Adjusting the aperture is possible only in 720p 30fps mode. For lively low-light shots, users can utilise the new MagicGlow triple-LED flash system, which provides adjustable brightness and colour temperature for realistic portraits.

The Realme 14 Pro includes a 6,000mm² VC cooling system and the GT mode found on flagship Realme GT 7 Pro models. Several Next AI-driven features enhance the user experience, including Clear Voice to filter ambient noise during calls, Share with iPhone, and Live Alerts, which work like Dynamic Island on iPhones. AI Screen Recognition and AI Snap mode help capture moving objects quickly, while AI Eraser and AI Ultra Clarity further elevate photography. Its under-display fingerprint sensor has been repositioned lower, making it more accessible and user-friendly.

For health-conscious users, the Realme Lab offers a heart rate measurement feature using the under-display fingerprint scanner, though its accuracy may not match medical-grade devices. AI Eye Care detects eye fatigue and adjusts screen settings accordingly. Air Gestures allow hands-free control of the phone, and the Free Call feature supports Bluetooth calling on compatible handsets, proving useful when there’s no network. However, I wish the Next AI features were consolidated into one place in the settings. Additionally, I hope Realme adds support for AI features like AI Transcribe and AI Remove Reflection through future updates. The inclusion of an IR blaster and NFC would have been nice additions in this price point.

5. Verdict and Competitors

While Realme’s numbered series has traditionally been known for its photography capabilities, the Realme 14 Pro takes a surprising step back in camera innovation. The Realme 12 Pro offered a telephoto lens, and the 13 Pro retained an ultra-wide lens while the telephoto camera was removed. However, the 14 Pro relies primarily on its 50-megapixel main sensor, with the 2-megapixel mono sensor adding minimal value. This pared-down camera setup may disappoint fans expecting cutting-edge photography from the series.

That said, the Realme 14 Pro shines in other areas, ensuring it remains a strong contender in its segment. Its superior display, capable chipset, and remarkable battery life make it a compelling choice for users prioritising performance and longevity over photography.

Meanwhile, the iQOO Z9s Pro, priced at Rs 22,999, delivers stellar performance with the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chipset, an impressive 5,500mAh battery with 80W fast charging, and a versatile triple-camera system.

Realme’s own portfolio also provides alternatives. The 13 Pro is available for Rs 26,999, though it might soon see a price drop or discontinuation. Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station claims Samsung has plans to use a 200MP periscope telephoto in one of its future Ultra flagships. Judging from the fact that the Galaxy S25 Ultra is already ready to hit the market, the device is expected to be the Galaxy S26 Ultra, which will launch earlier next year.

Samsung aims to regain its leadership in long-range zoom

The Galaxy S24 Ultra uses a 50MP sensor for its 5x periscope telephoto, and it is expected to be the case for the upcoming Galaxy S25 Ultra as well. In fact, the only rumored change for the S25 Ultra’s camera system is the switch to a 50MP ultrawide from the 12MP one of the S24 Ultra.

With the Galaxy S20 Ultra, Samsung initiated the trend of ultra-high-resolution smartphone cameras. With the Galaxy S23 Ultra, it raised the bar for the main sensor resolution from 108MP to 200MP. Now it’s applying the same number to the periscope telephoto.

Although, the sensor DCS mentioned (1/1.5″) is smaller than the 200MP main sensor (1/1.33″) of the Galaxy S24 Ultra, and not essentially the same one.

Galaxy S26 Ultra won’t be the first with a 200MP periscope telephoto

The headline will also be a bit different this time. Samsung isn’t going to be the first to pack a 200MP sensor for a periscope telephoto, as Vivo has already done it with the X200 Pro. The 200MP sensor on the X200 Pro (hands-on) is also slightly bigger (1/1.4″) than Samsung’s rumored 1/1.5″ one.

The 200MP periscope telephoto on the Vivo flagship indeed has improved its zooming capability, which currently outpaces the S24 Ultra in most long-range zoom shots in terms of detail.

Notably, most of the recent flagships also rely heavily on AI sharpening for long-range zoom shots. So, it will be interesting to see if Samsung manages to reclaim its ‘zoom king’ title from its Chinese counterpart with the Galaxy S26 Ultra.

China’s Semiconductor Push: From EUV Breakthroughs to Domestic Lithography

Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) lithography is a critical technology for manufacturing semiconductor chips smaller than 7 nanometers. For years, Dutch company ASML has maintained a global monopoly on EUV machines using the laser-produced plasma (LPP) method. However, since 2019, US-led sanctions have barred ASML from selling advanced EUV equipment to China, tightening restrictions further in 2024 to include EUV masks, etching machines, and other components.

China’s Innovative Approach to EUV

Chinese scientists are now pioneering alternative methods to bypass these sanctions. A breakthrough in EUV light generation has come from adopting the laser-induced discharge plasma (LDP) method, an innovative approach that avoids reliance on LPP technology. The LDP process involves vaporizing tin with lasers and using high-voltage discharge to generate plasma, which produces EUV light. This method is simpler, more cost-effective, and energy-efficient, though challenges remain in optimizing power output.

A significant milestone was achieved by the Harbin Institute of Technology under Professor Zhao Yongpeng, whose team developed a compact and efficient EUV light source using LDP technology. This innovation aligns with photolithography requirements and earned top recognition at the Harbin Provincial Innovation Achievement Competition.

Chinese Institutes make a Breakthrough

In January 2024, the Harbin Institute collaborated with the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics to enhance EUV light focusing and control. Other institutions, such as Tsinghua University and Guangdong Bay Area Aerospace Information Research Institute, are advancing related technologies, including power optimization and future light sources.

Meanwhile, Shanghai Micro Electronics Equipment (SMEE) filed a patent in 2023 for EUV radiation generators, signaling progress toward domestic lithography equipment. However, SMEE lags behind global leaders like ASML, as it cannot yet mass-produce machines for chips below 28 nm.

Recent Progress and Strategic Investments

China is backing its chip-making ambitions with serious money, increasing its investment from $19 billion in 2014 to $41 billion in 2023. This investment is starting to pay off. SMIC, China’s biggest chipmaker, has already made 7nm chips for Huawei’s Mate 60 Pro smartphone. Another breakthrough is coming from SMEE, which plans to start making 28nm chip-making machines in early 2025. While this is behind the 3nm chips that global leaders can make, it’s still an important step forward.

These 28nm chips are useful in many products like cars and factory equipment, helping China rely less on foreign suppliers. This progress, along with China’s work on EUV technology, shows how the country is pushing ahead despite international restrictions.

Challenges faced by China in Chip Production

China’s semiconductor industry faces hurdles, including dependency on imported components and US-imposed restrictions. Despite this, the country’s multi-pronged approach, including technological innovation, collaboration, and strategic investment, demonstrates its resolve to overcome these barriers and achieve self-reliance in advanced chipmaking.

The launch of the Samsung Galaxy A36 5G model in the Indian market might just have been confirmed. While the brand has yet to officially announce any availability details, the upcoming mid range phone was spotted on a key Indian certification platform.

The South Korean tech giant’s Galaxy A36 5G model was spotted on the BIS certification (Bureau of Indian Standards). It can be seen carrying the SM-A366E/DS model number (via MySmartPrice). The DS in the model number basically confirms support for dual SIM cards. Unfortunately, this does not reveal any finer details like its specifications, pricing, design, or more. But the BIS listing does confirm that it is arriving in India soon.

Earlier this month, the new Galaxy A56 and Galaxy A36 had their global support page go live. It was listed in France and later surfaced in other regions. A couple of months ago, the Samsung Galaxy A36 is expected to feature a 50MP primary camera on the rear like its predecessor. Meanwhile, the front is expected to house a 12MP selfie shooter. The back may include two more sensors, which could include an 8MP ultra wide angle lens and a 5MP macro camera.

Based on what we know so far, the Samsung Galaxy A36 may be equipped with the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 or possibly the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 that could be paired with 6GB of RAM. This model may run on the Android 15 OS based One UI 7 custom skin. The Galaxy A36 5G was also spotted in high quality renders, which revealed a Galaxy Note 10-like design. While the battery capacity is still unclear, the device may support 45W wired fast charging.

China rolls out digital product subsidies, making iPhones and other smartphones super affordable

China has announced a new subsidy scheme to encourage consumer purchases of digital products, including smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches. The subsidy will be effective starting January 20th, 2025.

This initiative aims to make these digital products more affordable for consumers. Under the program, eligible products priced below 6,000 yuan ($820) will receive a one-time subsidy covering 15% of the product’s sales price after the retailer’s discount. Each consumer can receive a maximum subsidy of 500 yuan ($68) per item, with a limit of one subsidized item per category for each customer.

The subsidy plan is expected to stimulate market consumption and increase sales in the digital product sector. It can also boost consumer confidence, encouraging greater willingness to spend. This will help establish a virtuous cycle that further invigorates the consumer market.

In anticipation of the subsidy rollout, various smartphone brands have adjusted their pricing strategies. For instance, the iPhone 16 Plus has dropped in price from 6,999 yuan ($956) to 5,999 yuan ($820), enabling it to qualify for the subsidy. The 128GB version of the iPhone 16 is expected to retail at approximately 4,999 yuan ($683) on platforms like JD.com, resulting in a post-subsidy price of around 4,499 yuan ($615).

Meanwhile, Xiaomi has also positioned itself as a major player in the subsidy-driven market. The Redmi Turbo 4 and K80 series now start at just 1,699 yuan ($232) post-subsidy, offering consumers high-performance options at competitive prices. For instance, the Redmi K80 Pro 16GB+1TB configuration, which originally cost 4,799 yuan ($656), is now available for 4,299 yuan ($588) after the maximum subsidy of 500 yuan.

This subsidy program is expected to create more development opportunities for the relevant industrial chain. The sales increase driven by the purchase subsidy will also create new growth for the upstream supply chain, leading to business expansion in related fields.

The same RMX3944 model number even made its way to the Camera FV-5 database. Apparently, the Realme P3x 5G will pack a 1.6MP primary camera on the rear with an f/1.9 aperture. This listing likely includes pixel binning, so the actual resolution of the image sensor is higher. Considering it is a budget phone, it skips any form of image stabilization. So you’re not getting OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) or EIS (Electronic Image Stabilization).

The primary camera on the Realme P3x will offer manual focus, a Pro mode, long exposure shots of up to 32 seconds, and an ISO range of 100 to 6400. Realme’s upcoming P3x model still doesn’t have an official launch date. However, these devices are expected to launch in India sometime next month. Poco F7 Ultra seems to be hitting the global market soon, as a rebadged device rather than a new one. The latest firmware leak confirmed that the Poco F7 Ultra is in fact a Redmi K80 Pro with slight modifications for international markets. Let’s get down to the latest leak and learn everything from it.

As per 91mobiles Indonesia, there are evident mentions of the name “Poco F7 Ultra” within a firmware build of the Redmi K80 Pro. Leaked configuration parameters of the Android firmware explicitly include the “Poco F7 Ultra” branding and the model number “24122RKC7G.”

For those unaware, the model number has been associated with the global variant of the Poco F7 Ultra and has recently been confirmed via SDPPI Postel certification on January 13, 2025.

This would be a confirmation of earlier speculations that the Redmi K80 Pro, currently exclusive to the Chinese market, would be branded as Poco F7 Ultra in the international markets. Though the core hardware would probably remain the same, there is always a chance for minor specification tweaks in some regions.

What to expect from the Poco F7 Ultra?

The Poco F7 Ultra is said to be carrying top-of-the-line specifications equal to the Redmi K80 Pro. It will be carrying Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, which is sure to bring out flagship performance. The camera setup is equally impressive. Geekbench is a popular benchmarking tool for measuring the CPU capabilities of devices. On this platform, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 gets a higher single-core score. However, the Dimensity 8400 Ultra has a clear advantage when all cores are at work, thanks to all big CPU cores. That’s what the multi-core scores depict.

Dimensity 8400 Ultra vs Snapdragon 8 Gen 2: Key differences

The two chips take entirely different approaches to CPU architecture. The Dimensity 8400 Ultra has all Cortex-A725 big CPU cores, while the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 adopts a heterogeneous CPU architecture. The latter has one Cortex-X3 core, two Cortex-A715 cores, two Cortex-A710 cores, and three Cortex-A510 cores.

GPUs also bring a significant difference between the two. The Dimensity chip has a Mali-G720 MP7 GPU, which falls short of the Adreno 740 inside the Snapdragon chip in terms of performance. The latter also brings support for hardware ray tracing for enhanced gameplay.

As for the cameras, the Dimensity chip supports up to 320MP single camera, while the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 can go up to 200MP. However, the latter supports 8K video recording, which is limited up to 4K on the Dimensity 8400 Ultra.

Both chips have integrated 5G modems. The Dimensity 8400 Ultra has a 5.1 Gbps peak download speed, whereas the Snapdragon chip peaks at 10 Gbps. The latter also supports a newer Wi-Fi 7 standard (vs. Wi-Fi 6E on D-8400 Ultra). The Dimensity chip, however, has a newer Bluetooth 5.4 standard.

Both Dimensity 8400 Ultra and Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 are excellent chips. For everyday tasks such as browsing and social media, both chips would offer a smooth experience. However, the difference is visible while gaming.

The Snapdragon chip has better and sustained gaming performance. And the support for ray tracking makes it an even better choice for gaming. That doesn’t make Dimensity 8400 Ultra a dull choice for gaming. It’s, in fact, better than most mid-range chips.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 also has higher video recording quality and better connectivity. Both chips have LPDDR5X and UFS 4.0 support and high-performance NPUs for on-device AI tasks.

TikTok is Back in the US! Brand thanks Donald Trump for App revival

Just a day ago, TikTok faced a ban in the US that prevented the service from over 170 million users. But within a day of the ban, this restriction has been lifted in the region. The company just shared the announcement on X (formerly Twitter) and showed its gratitude to US President Donald Trump.

In a tweet, the social media giant shared an official statement where it thanked President Trump for helping TikTok in resuming its service to over 170 million American users. The company shared that the government provided the necessary clarity and assurance of no penalties being levied on TikTok for continuing its operation in the region. This would even allow over 7 million small businesses to also resume their operations via the short video sharing platform.

TikTok further added that this is a “strong stand for the First Amendment and against arbitrary censorship. We will work with President Trump on a long-term solution that keeps TikTok in the United States”. For those unaware, the US Supreme Court enforced a ban on the app if it failed to divest the app by 19th January 2025. The move sparked criticism from many as they argued that it violated free speech and undermined democratic values.

Donald Trump was basically the last lifeline for the company and it seems that the negotiations have gone in favor of TikTok. TikTok services officially began around 12 MP ET on Sunday, with a message on the app stating “Welcome Back!” while also crediting Trump for restoring service. There are no other updates regarding ByteDance linked apps like CapCut and Marvel Snap, so stay tuned for more updates.

The only major difference with the original version is that the new AP has one less CPU core. So instead of eight cores, the binned versions pack seven cores.

Out of these 2 are prime cores that run at a 4.32GHz clock speed, while the rest are five high performance cores that run at 3.53GHz frequency. This means that the seven core chipset won’t cost as much as the octa core Snapdragon 8 Elite. In other words, the brands would likely opt for this Snapdragon 8 Elite variant for budget flagship phones or new foldable devices. Thus, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy S25 Slim would likely pack this new chipset. Another variant that could feature this processor is the Galaxy Z Fold 7 SE.

For those unaware, this is a binned version of this chip so you can expect it to have slightly weaker performance than the standard variant. But this also means that the 7 core Snapdragon 8 Elite would offer better thermals, which could be key for foldable or super thin phones. The Oppo Find N5 was recently spotted on GeekBench with this chipset. Its performance was quite similar to the regular Snapdragon 8 Elite. So you likely aren’t missing out on much either.
