Xiaomi announces its first 8MP indoor security camera: Features 4K HDR footage, local AI & HyperOS

Xiaomi has unveiled its latest home security offering, the Xiaomi Smart Camera C700 in the Chinese market. This flagship camera boasts a number of impressive features, including 4K resolution, local AI processing, and a wide range of connectivity options. Let’s check out its key specs.

Xiaomi Smart Camera C700 Specifications:

Xiaomi Smart Camera C700 is the first indoor smart camera from Xiaomi to boast an 8MP sensor. The camera captures 4K HDR ultra-clear footage at 3840×2160 resolution, delivering sharper and more detailed visuals for enhanced security and monitoring. The camera features a professional-grade lens with 5 large-aperture optical lenses for exceptional image clarity, even in low-light environments.

The camera includes a dual-motor pan/tilt functionality that allows it to cover wide angles—360° horizontally and 110° vertically. This enables the camera to monitor a larger area and eliminates blind spots in surveillance coverage. Users can also physically shield the lens for privacy, a feature that supports both automated and manual control.

The C700 shines in low-light conditions thanks to its impressive night vision. Ten invisible 940nm infrared LEDs provide clear images up to 10 meters away without disturbing the environment. This is achieved through innovative non-red exposure technology.

The local AI capabilities of the Xiaomi Smart Camera C700 add a layer of advanced functionality. The AI supports multiple detection features such as baby crying detection, pet dynamic tracking, human form detection, and significant anomaly alerts like glass breaking. These features are processed locally, ensuring quick and accurate notifications without the need to store data on the cloud, enhancing privacy and security.

The security camera can also recognize gestures, such as an “OK” sign, to initiate actions like making voice calls. This is combined with two-way audio communication facilitated by an intelligent noise-reduction microphone and a large-diameter BOX speaker.

The C700 boasts strong connectivity with dual-band Wi-Fi 6 for reliable and speedy data transfer. It seamlessly integrates with other Xiaomi smart home devices through Xiaomi HyperOS Connect, enabling smart automations like lights turning on upon motion detection or the camera adjusting its view when the door unlocks.

For robust security, the C700 encrypts data transmission and utilizes a Mi Home Security Chip for top-notch data protection. It offers flexible storage options with microSD card (up to 256GB) and NAS compatibility, ensuring you can archive extensive video footage.

Pricing and Availability

The Xiaomi Smart Camera C700 is priced at 349 yuan ($49) and is available for purchase on e-commerce platforms like JD.com. It will go on sale starting at 10 a.m. on May 10th.

Apple Watch gets FDA approval for use in AFib clinical studies

The Apple Watch has grown in versatility since it was first introduced by the Cupertino-based company. It has proved to be a lifesaver in several instances due to its impressive portfolio of features. The latest news is that the Apple Watch can now be used in AFib clinical studies, thanks to a new FDA approval. This is cherry news for Apple after the issues related to pulse oximetry patent rights that affected the Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2.

ITC declines Apple's plea to prevent Apple Watch sales ban
ITC declines Apple’s plea to prevent Apple Watch sales ban

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the atrial fibrillation (AFib) detection software on the Apple Watch and this can be deployed for clinical trials. The Apple Watch’s AFib history feature is the first digital health technology that has scaled through the FDA’s Medical Device Development Tools (MDDT) program. Atrial fibrillation is an abnormal heartbeat condition that is also known as arrhythmia. The AFib history feature is designed to observe a subject’s AFib burden weekly estimate before and after using a cardiac ablation device during a clinical trial.

The Apple Watch AFib History feature regularly checks the user’s heart rhythm for signs of AFib. After a week of checking, it estimates how often your heart was beating irregularly while wearing the Apple Watch. The AFib detection software is also designed to be used as a biomarker test to help evaluate estimates of AFib burden as a secondary effectiveness endpoint in clinical studies to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of cardiac ablation devices. These are important emerging devices that could significantly reduce the burden of the atrial fibrillation condition on a patient.

It is noted that atrial fibrillation can be detected by several traditional methods including using the ECG or even a home blood pressure monitor. There are also some smart wearable devices apart from the Apple Watch that are capable of detecting atrial fibrillation.

Samsung could unveil the Arm-based Galaxy Book 4 Edge as soon as this month

We previously reported that Samsung is working on a new laptop that belongs to the Galaxy Book 4 series. Unlike the existing models under the Galaxy Book series (that are powered by Intel chips), the new Galaxy Book 4 Edge is going to use the Windows on Arm platform and will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite chip. Qualcomm has informed that their new Arm-based chips could launch somewhere around “mid-2024” and it could also be this month.

Samsung Galaxy Book 4

Now the latest news is that Samsung is also planning to unveil the Galaxy Book 4 Edge (which will be powered by the new chip) this month. According to sources at Sammobile, the company wants to reveal the Galaxy Book 4 Edge before the end of May. It appears that Samsung wants to offer the new Arm-based machine as soon as the new chips become available.

The Galaxy Book 4 Edge naming and its use of an Arm-based chip has previously been confirmed by a GeekBench listing surfaced earlier this month. We also know that the new laptop will offer a 14″ display, 16GB RAM, and 512GB storage and will cost around €1,800.

Both benchmarks shown off by Qualcomm and GeekBench listings of devices with the chip indicate impressive performance and power efficiency. It could mean a significant improvement in battery life. However, it’s important to mention that there is no commercially available device with the new chip yet, and it’s not clear how the tests were performed. A difference in the power management or the cooling solution can definitely influence the numbers. So, take them with a pinch of salt until the retail units are out.

For those unaware, the Snapdragon X Elite equips 12 uniform Qualcomm Oryon CPUs, two of which run at 4.3GHz and the rest run at 3.8GHz. For graphics, it equips a Qualcomm Adreno GPU that goes up to 4.6 TFLOPS (Tera Floating Point Operations Per Second). For specific AI-based applications, the chip boasts 45TOPS Qualcomm Hexagon NPU.

This announcement marks a significant milestone, as it will have been over nine years since the original Switch debuted in March 2015.

Despite speculation surrounding the upcoming Nintendo Direct event scheduled for June, Furukawa clarified that the presentation will solely focus on software updates for the existing Nintendo Switch platform. This move aims to manage expectations and avoid disappointing fans eagerly anticipating news about the Switch successor.

The decision to confirm the announcement of the Switch successor ahead of the Nintendo Direct event is notable, signaling Nintendo’s commitment to transparency and its strategy for transitioning to next-generation hardware. However, Furukawa emphasized that details about the new console will not be discussed until a later date.

Recent rumors circulating within gaming communities suggest that the new console, often dubbed ‘Switch 2’, may feature innovative Joy-Con-style controllers that magnetically attach to the console. In financial terms, Nintendo reported impressive performance for the fiscal year 2024, with sales of 15.7 million Switch consoles, generating 1.7 trillion yen in revenue and a net profit of 490.6 billion yen. Patent reveals insights about Apple’s foldable iPhone development

Apple is known to be working on a foldable iPhone for quite a while. The company filed a patent with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) last October. USPTO has now published the patent application, which reveals the key features of the hinge of Apple’s foldable device.

The company’s first foldable iPhone appears to be a flip-style device similar to the Samsung Galaxy Flip series. Apple’s hinge mechanism is rumored to offer a “greater range of motion”.

The FIG.1 represents a foldable Apple device, which according to the company, is a cellular phone, a computer, or other portable electronic device. So, Apple might be working on other devices such as a foldable iPad as well alongside foldable iPhones. Notably, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expected a hybrid foldable iPad-MacBook to go into mass production in 2027.

The FIG. 2 is a side view of a portion of an illustrative electronic device having a hinge with links. According to the company, the display may fold in both directions (inwards and outwards) with this hinge design. While it will be a one-of-a-kind device on the market, the company didn’t confirm that it will happen in the near future.

The patent images reveal that the foldable devices from the company will equip synchronization gear plates with interlocked teeth. It will allow for “synchronized rotational movement between the left and right halves of the hinge.” The hinge may have multiple interconnected points that may be coupled to each other for rotational motion.

Nonetheless, you should note that companies including Apple file multiple patents every about the technologies they are working on. However, only a few of them make their way to an end product. So, there’s practically no guarantee that a folding iPhone or another Apple device will hit the shelves with the patented technologies.
