<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-446129 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Foldable-iPhone-Prototype.jpg?x44794" alt="Apple" width="800" height="450" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Foldable-iPhone-Prototype.jpg 800w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Foldable-iPhone-Prototype-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Foldable-iPhone-Prototype-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Foldable-iPhone-Prototype-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Foldable-iPhone-Prototype-747x420.jpg 747w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /></p>
<p>The news arrives from sources close to the matter who shared this information with <a href="http://www.thelec.net/news/articleView.html?idxno=4026" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>TheElec</em></a>. By removing the polarizer on the display, the panel will be even thinner, which means that it will also be optimal for foldable screen. For those unaware, the polarizers are used to allow only lights in certain directions to pass through. This improves the viability of the display. But, it also reduces the overall brightness of the panel as well.</p>
<p>Notably, Samsung Display was the first to make an OLED panel without a polarizer, which was used on the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung-galaxy-z-fold-3/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Galaxy Z Fold 3</a>. This model was the company&#8217;s last foldable phone model. So, this means that it is possible that the Cupertino based giant is also possibly planning on building its very own foldable iPhone model as well. Although, it is still unclear if the brand is actually working on such a product at the moment.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-413745 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/foldable-iPhone-concept.jpeg?x44794" alt="Apple" width="1600" height="900" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/foldable-iPhone-concept.jpeg 1600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/foldable-iPhone-concept-300x169.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/foldable-iPhone-concept-768x432.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/foldable-iPhone-concept-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/foldable-iPhone-concept-696x392.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/foldable-iPhone-concept-1068x601.jpeg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/foldable-iPhone-concept-747x420.jpeg 747w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></p>
<p>We have reported on <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiyzIu4wdT3AhWKUWwGHTgkAcAQFnoECA0QAw&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gizmochina.com%2F2021%2F11%2F19%2Fapple-patents-foldable-device-split-screen-could-double-notebook%2F&amp;usg=AOvVaw05Lcy4kuqdvp8nUzrldqYg" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Apple patents regarding a foldable phone</a>. Furthermore, analysts have also claimed that the company is planning on launching its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2022/02/22/apple-foldable-iphone-delayed-2025/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">first foldable sometime by 2025</a>. So, the development of such an OLED panel a couple of years prior to its eventual release seems reasonable.</p>

This new tech would even allow you to replace your broken display by making an OLED screen yourself.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-436429 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Screenshot-2022-01-10-183836.png?x44794" alt="Tech" width="617" height="406" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Screenshot-2022-01-10-183836.png 617w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Screenshot-2022-01-10-183836-300x197.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 617px) 100vw, 617px" /></p>
<p>According to an <a href="https://www.engadget.com/full-3d-printed-flexible-oled-display-220930099.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Engadget</em> </a>report, the University of Minnesota Twin Cities researchers have developed what they believe is the first fully 3D printed flexible OLED display. In other words, you might not have to rely on major display makers like BOE or Samsung to manufacture a replacement panel to fix your electronic devices. Talking about the process, the breakthrough involves the combination of two methods of 3D printing to print the six layers needed for a functional display.</p>
<p>The University team used extrusion printing to make the electrodes, encapsulation, insulation and interconnects, with active layers being spray painted at room temperature. Notably, previous attempts from others had ran into issues with light uniformity (consistency across the whole panel) or relied on techniques beyond 3D printing to assemble the components. But, the researchers at Minnesota Twin Cities managed to build a prototype, which is just 1.5 inch wide and uses 64 pixels.</p>
<p><iframe loading="lazy" title="Fully 3D-Printed OLED Display - Timelapse" width="696" height="392" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/k7KV_lOIp8o?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe></p>
<p>Meaning, this technology is still quite far from being viable since any practical use would require a much higher pixel count. The people behind this technology are also working on making the display brighter while also adapting the technology for use at homes. Unfortunately, the brand used a custom 3D printer that costs as much as a Tesla Model S. So, we don&#8217;t expect this breakthrough to make it to your homes within the next couple of years.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-334557 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Huawei-HiSilicon-FHD-Platform.jpg?x44794" alt="Huawei HiSilicon FHD Chip for Smart TVs" width="1080" height="600" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Huawei-HiSilicon-FHD-Platform.jpg 1080w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Huawei-HiSilicon-FHD-Platform-300x167.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Huawei-HiSilicon-FHD-Platform-768x427.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Huawei-HiSilicon-FHD-Platform-1024x569.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Huawei-HiSilicon-FHD-Platform-696x387.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Huawei-HiSilicon-FHD-Platform-1068x593.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Huawei-HiSilicon-FHD-Platform-756x420.jpg 756w" sizes="(max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px" /></p>
<p>If the latest report coming from China is to be believed, then Huawei HiSilicon&#8217;s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/flexible-oled">flexible OLED</a> driver chip has now entered the trial production stage. For those who are unaware, the driver chip for the OLED panel controls the illumination of each pixel in the display.</p>
<p>The report also adds that the product will start mass production in the first half of next year. The driver <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/chip">chip</a> for the flexible OLED panel is expected to be delivered to suppliers by the end of this year. Also, given that its own chip-making arm is developing this chip, Huawei is expected to adopt it for its upcoming products. It is being reported that samples have already been sent to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/boe">BOE</a> and Honor for testing purposes.</p>
<p>Recently, it was reported that the Chinese giant is trying to become more self-efficient and as a part of that, it plans to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/06/28/huawei-build-hisilicon-fab-wuhan-offset-us-sanction/">set up its first chip production factory</a> in Wuhan to offset sanctions imposed by the United States. Earlier this month, the company <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/07/07/huawei-hisilicon-signs-chip-supply-deal-china-firm/">also signed a deal</a> with a Chinese firm to strengthen its domestic supply chain.</p>

<p>This means that the shipments will witness a drop of 35 percent when compared to the previous quarter. This is being attributed to Q2 2021 being off-season and the drop of shipments in <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple-iphone">Apple iPhone</a> models.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-364201 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Xiaomi-Mi-11-review-02.jpg?x44794" alt="Xiaomi Mi 11 display review 02" width="2048" height="1152" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Xiaomi-Mi-11-review-02.jpg 2048w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Xiaomi-Mi-11-review-02-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Xiaomi-Mi-11-review-02-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Xiaomi-Mi-11-review-02-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Xiaomi-Mi-11-review-02-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Xiaomi-Mi-11-review-02-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Xiaomi-Mi-11-review-02-747x420.jpg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Xiaomi-Mi-11-review-02-1920x1080.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px" /></p>
<p>However, when compared Year-on-Year, the numbers represent an impressive increase of 54 percent. On the other hand, the report adds that the rigid <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/oled">OLED panel</a> shipments will be around 53 million units in Q2 2021.</p>
<p>The report from Omdia claims that Samsung Display could ship more than 39.1 million units of flexible OLED panels in the second quarter of this year, which represents a drop of 42.8 percent from the previous quarter and an increase of 61.6 percent YoY.</p>
<p>On the other hand, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/lg-display">LG Display</a> is expected to ship 10.6 million units, indicating a drop of 41.1 percent from the previous quarter and an increase of 55.9 percent year-on-year. BOE, CSOT, Visionox, and Tianma are expected to ship 7.9 million units, 3.1 million units, 2.1 million units, and 1.4 million units, respectively in Q2 2021.</p>
<p>Previously, Samsung was one of the few smartphone manufacturers using flexible OLED panels for its Galaxy S-series and Note-series devices, along with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei">Huawei</a> and Apple. But that is now changing, with more brands adopting this new panel.</p>
<p>With the increase in demand, manufacturers for the flexible OLED panels have also increased as the likes of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/boe">BOE</a> and CSOT increasing their production capacity to compete against the market leader Samsung Display.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-361842 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/2068_2351_4731.jpg?x44794" alt="Tianma" width="600" height="342" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/2068_2351_4731.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/2068_2351_4731-300x171.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<p>According to <a href="http://www.thelec.net/news/articleView.html?idxno=2068" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>TheElec</em> </a>report, the Chinese display maker&#8217;s goal is half of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/boe/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">BOE</a>&#8216;s target of shipping 40 million flexible OLED panels, which it announced back in August 2020. market research had also found that Tianma has already shipped around a million OLED panels this year, so the target for next year is a whopping 40 times this figure. The analysis from Stone Partners also estimates that the company will only be able to ship 7.5 million OLED panels in 2021, which is just around 20 percent of the company&#8217;s far fetched goals.</p>

<p>At the moment, Tianma is proceeding to place orders for equipment for its 6th gen OLED factory, TM18. This equipment will be placed in the factory by the first half of 2022 and will have a production capacity of 48,000 substrates per month, which is higher than its current gen TM17&#8217;s 37,500 substrates production capacity. Furthermore, the company is producing its rigid OLED panels at its TM15 factory in Shanghai and has been used to supply smartphone OEMs like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Xiaomi</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/lenovo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Lenovo</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/asus/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Asus</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/htc/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">HTC</a>, and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/lg/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">LG Electronics</a>.</p>

<p>Notably, the company&#8217;s flexible panels are also being tested by Xiaomi, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/vivo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Vivo</a>, and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/honor/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Honor</a>. Tianma also has a chance of becoming another supplier of Xiaomi along with BOE. At the moment, both display makers are facing difficulties in securing customers for their flexible OLED panels, especially after the void left behind by <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Huawei</a>. Currently, many smartphone brands are yet to adopt flexible display technology.</p>

However, an update from several tipsters revealed that the iPad will have OLED displays only by 2022. Now, a report from Korea has more details regarding the display tech that&#8217;s coming to the iPads.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-220122" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/iPad-Pro-2018-featured.png?x44794" alt="iPad Pro (2018) featured" width="1275" height="776" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/iPad-Pro-2018-featured.png 1275w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/iPad-Pro-2018-featured-300x183.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/iPad-Pro-2018-featured-768x467.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/iPad-Pro-2018-featured-1024x623.png 1024w" sizes="(max-width: 1275px) 100vw, 1275px" /></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>According to the <a href="https://english.etnews.com/20201216200001">report</a>, <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple">Apple</a> has made the decision of introducing OLEDs to iPads from 2022. In fact, it has already made requests to suppliers like <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung-display">Samsung Display</a> and <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/LG-display">LG Display</a>. What is interesting here is the new OLED tech that Apple is reportedly going to use.</p>
<p>Precisely, Apple will use &#8220;<a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/hybrid-OLED">hybrid OLED</a>&#8221; displays on the 2022 iPads. These are said to be thinner than typical OLED displays. Samsung will reportedly start supplying these panels in 2022 while LG Display will join a year later. A source for the report says Samsung has already started taking necessary steps for it.</p>
<p>Also, if another source is true, Apple will use Samsung&#8217;s panel on one <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/iPad">iPad</a> model in 2022. Following this, both Samsung and LG will begin the full-scale supply from 2023. Speaking of which, the hybrid OLED panels will reportedly be a combination of flexible and <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/rigid-OLED">rigid OLED</a>. Basically, the terms refer to the rigid(glass) or flexible substrates that are being used.</p>
<p>The latter obviously is about 3x times costlier than <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/rigid-OLED">rigid OLED</a> and can withstand more impact. Anyway, the new panel from both the companies will have a rigid glass substrate(TFT- Thin Film Transistor). On top of this, it is said to be applied with TFE (Thin Film Encapsulation) technology.</p>
<h6 class="related" style="text-align: center"><strong><span style="color: #ff0000">EDITOR&#8217;S PICK</span>: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/30/apple-will-reportedly-contribute-half-of-total-flexible-oled-smartphones-in-2021/">Apple will reportedly contribute half of total flexible OLED smartphones in 2021</a></strong></h6>
<p>Simply put, the TFE is used in flexible <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/OLED">OLED</a>s to reduce the overall thickness whilst not compromising on the rigidity. Samsung calls it the UT(Ultra Thin) panel while LG says it as ATO (Advanced Thin OLED).</p>
<p>Either way, it looks like 2022 iPads will be the first to use OLED displays after a lot of rumors. Also, you can take a look at the display transition of its portfolio of products  below:</p>
<ul>
<li>First AMOLED product by Apple- <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2015/04/08/apple-watch-to-launch-in-china-on-april-10/">Apple Watch 2015</a>.</li>
<li>First OLED iPhone- <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-x">iPhone X</a>(2017)</li>
<li>Current <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-watch-edition-series-6/">Apple watch</a>&#8211; use LGD&#8217;s Flexible OLED(2020)</li>
<li>First mini-LED <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/macbook">MacBook</a>&#8211; 14-inch(rumored-2021)</li>
<li>First OLED <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/ipad">iPad</a>-Expected-2022.</li>
</ul>
<p>That said, rumors aside, Apple&#8217;s transition from <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/LCD">LCD</a> to <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/LED">LED</a> tech has been a smooth and cleverly positioned strategy starting from 2015. Besides, the report also mentions the possibility of Apple using mini-LED on iPads in 2021. These are basically a film of backlit LEDs over a Liquid Crystal Layer(LCD).</p>

<p>TheElec&#8217;s report says that according to a research firm Stone Partners, 2021 will record a total of 1.39 billion <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/smartphone-shipments">smartphone shipments</a> while 2020 will reportedly account for 1.265 billion. Among them, <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/LCD">LCD</a>, and total <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/OLED">OLED</a> smartphone shipments will be 793, and 597 million respectively. Here, the total OLED consists of two- rigid OLED, and flexible OLED devices.</p>
<p>Accordingly, the report <a href="http://www.thelec.net/news/articleView.html?idxno=1800">says</a> close to 315 million smartphones will use flexible OLED panels next year. And this is 52% higher than the current year&#8217;s predicted shipments of 207 million. Besides, <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple">Apple</a> will reportedly ship 160 million OLED iPhones in 2021 which is an 80% jump from the already estimated 90 million. This is more than 50% of the total flexible OLED smartphone shipments.</p>
<p>Also, the report says the company&#8217;s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/09/boe-apple-iphone-display-supplier/">use of flexible OLED</a> for iPhones will make flexible OLED shipments surpass the rigid OLED for the first time in 2021. For the unware, OLED is an Organic- Light Emitting Diode. <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/flexible-oled">Flexible OLED</a> has a flexible/soft substrate made of plastic to last more than Glass. They are resistant to impact as well as lighter, and thinner. Apple brought the flexible OLED displays to wearables with <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple-watch-2015">Apple Watch</a> in 2015, and to the <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-x">iPhone X</a> in 2017.</p>
<p>Coming back, companies like <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a>, <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei">Huawei</a> will ship 90 million, and 8 million flexible OLED smartphones next year. The reason for the sudden drop in Huawei&#8217;s outlook is reportedly due to the <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei-us-ban">US ban</a>. That said the gap of 50 to 60 million of Huawei&#8217;s flexible OLED shipments will now be filled by <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi">Xiaomi</a>, <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/oppo">OPPO</a>, and <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/vivo">Vivo</a> says the report. Xiaomi and OPPO will reportedly churn out 18 million flexible OLED smartphones. And Vivo will ship about 12 million units in 2021.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-233169 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/BOE-flexible-foldable-screen-featured.jpeg?x44794" alt="BOE flexible foldable screen featured" width="720" height="420" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/BOE-flexible-foldable-screen-featured.jpeg 720w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/BOE-flexible-foldable-screen-featured-300x175.jpeg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px" /></p>
<p>The company revealed its plans at a local display event in the Sichuan Province and also said that it currently holds about 20.3 percent of the flexible OLED panel market share this year. The total estimated value of the flexible OLED panel market is said to be around 49.7 billion US Dollars, according to BOE, and the company wants to further grow in this area, as per <a href="http://www.thelec.net/news/articleView.html?idxno=1628" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>TheElec</em> </a>report.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/09/24/8848-dragon-limited-edition-luxury-phone-launched/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">8848 M6 Private Customized Dragon Limited Edition Luxury Smartphone launches for a whopping $4400</a></strong></h6>
<p>BOE mentioned that a third of the world&#8217;s entire output for these bendable OLED panels will be from its factories in Sichuan and Chongqing within the next three to five years. While the company didn&#8217;t explicitly state that it wishes to surpass the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Samsung</a>, the South Korean tech giant is also one of the major players in this market, and aiming for a 40 percent market share implies competition for such a dominance in the market.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-155571" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/boe-display-5.jpg?x44794" alt="BOE display technology" width="586" height="378" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/boe-display-5.jpg 505w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/boe-display-5-300x194.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 586px) 100vw, 586px" /></p>
<p>At the moment, BOE is capable of manufacturing about 144,000 substrates for its display panels each month, when all three production lines are operating. The company even plans to produce over 40 million flexible OLEDs by the end of this year, which is about a fourth of what Samsung aims at producing by 2020 end. BOE is also facing issues with its orders from <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Huawei</a>, which declined in recent times. Although, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Apple</a> might be a potential customer for the display maker in 2021 if it manages to get approval during its review.</p>

The South Korean tech giant&#8217;s production line is currently capable of manufacturing 260,000 units per month. However, this number is expected to grow by about 600,000 units per month by the end of May while by the end of 2020, the production capacity is expected to rise further, up to million units a month.</p>
<p>This sizeable growth would be around a quadruple that of current standards. For those unaware, Samsung is one of the leaders for flexible OLED displays. The company was one of the first to ever release the first foldable smartphone and has also recently unveiled the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-z-flip/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Galaxy Z Flip</a>, showcasing its increasing focus on such smartphones.</p>
<figure id="attachment_112788" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-112788" style="width: 610px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-112788 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/samsung-oled.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung OLED" width="610" height="363" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/samsung-oled.jpg 610w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/samsung-oled-300x179.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-112788" class="wp-caption-text">Flexible OLED panels from Samsung</figcaption></figure>
<p>Since 2019, the demand for foldable screens has grown, thus, Samsung is aiming to supply such folding displays not just for its own offerings but for other OEMs as well. Furthermore, the company is also planning to build additional facilities to boost the production of the flexible display panels. These facilities are planned for Vietnam and will supplement the other production lines back in its home country, South Korea.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/03/03/black-shark-3-pro-launched-with-a-massive-7-1-inch-amoled-high-responsive-display-65w-fast-charging/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Black Shark 3 Pro launched with a massive 7.1-inch AMOLED high-responsive display &amp; 65W fast charging</a></strong></h6>
<p>According to an announcement from <span class="post-body">Philoptics</span>, responsible for supplying cutting equipment for Samsung displays, the company has plans to provide $13.8 million and $5.84 million worth of equipment by the end of both May and July. This is indicative of the increasing scales of operations for the foldable displays and is in line with Samsung&#8217;s schedule as well.</p>

<p>Samsung is one of the largest manufacturers for OLED displays. The company is using this position of its to profit from a growing demand for such displays. It has been reported on multiple occasions that the smartphone market is under a stagnation period, so the increasing demand will only serve to benefit Samsung in this regard. Notably, Samsung had also recently achieved a breakthrough in displays with its UTG (Ultra Thin Glass) technology which is flexible while still offering better protection in comparison to plastic OLEDs.</p>

As the popularity of OLED displays grows, even more, the company is planning on increasing its production capacity for the same.</p>
<p>LCD panels prices have been plummeting as even more smartphone manufacturers adopt the OLED panel. In South Korea, China and Taiwan, the production of the display technology has been ceased effectively. This, in turn, will see BOE suffer from heavy losses due to lack of orders or oversupply. Currently, smartphones with OLED displays are more popular in mid to premium grade handsets, with even entry level devices expected to soon adopt the technology as well.</p>
<figure id="attachment_155571" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-155571" style="width: 623px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-155571 " src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/boe-display-5.jpg?x44794" alt="BOE display technology" width="623" height="402" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/boe-display-5.jpg 505w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/boe-display-5-300x194.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 623px) 100vw, 623px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-155571" class="wp-caption-text">Flexible OLED Display from BOE</figcaption></figure>
<p>Thus, BOE is launching the OLED production lines this year which will essentially boost its manufacturing capacity by more than 200 percent. Recently, the company has heavily invested in three OLED production lines in China. The first is in Chengdu which is also the first flexible <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/amoled/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">AMOLED</a> production line within China. It will produce the sixth generation of AMOLED displays and will reach a full production capacity of manufacturing 48,000 units every month.</p>

<p>The second is in Sichuan and will start shipping AMOLED display units by July 2020 and is currently raising production capacity. The third facility is in Chongqing, which had a massive 46.5 billion Yuan investment and will be completed later this year. The production capacity of this is also expected to reach 48,000 units per month volume.</p>

<p>According to BOE, the production capacity of its new OLED panels will be around 70 million units in 2020. Out of this number, about 20 million are said to be flexible OLED displays. This number will reportedly bump up the company&#8217;s global market share in the field to 18 percent. Notable clients of BOE OLED displays include <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/brand/huawei/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Huawei</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/brand/oppo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Oppo</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/brand/vivo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Vivo</a> and more. It&#8217;s basically a permanently folded curved screen device. Looking at its beautiful curved display, we may assume that it&#8217;s from big-league OLED makers like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a>, LG, or even <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/BOE">BOE</a>. But turns out, Xiaomi worked very closely with China&#8217;s Visionox to bring this curved screen design to reality.</p>

<p>A top-rated digital blogger and supply chain source, Mocha revealed on Weibo earlier today that <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/visionox">Visionox</a> and Xiaomi developed the Mi Mix Alpha concept together. So it was none of the big names like Samsung or BOE (Mate X <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/05/24/huawei-boe-partnering-8-inch-foldable-display-smartphone/">display supplier</a>) that brought such an experimental design close to a commercial release. Xiaomi&#8217;s product director Wang Teng Thomas didn&#8217;t deny this claim. He replied to the post saying that Xiaomi works with multiple OLED panel makers including Visionox.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Screenshot-2019-09-25-at-9.02.53-PM.png?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-278691" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Screenshot-2019-09-25-at-9.02.53-PM.png?x44794" alt="visionox mi mix alpha supplier comment" width="449" height="264" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Screenshot-2019-09-25-at-9.02.53-PM.png 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Screenshot-2019-09-25-at-9.02.53-PM-300x177.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 449px) 100vw, 449px" /></a></p>
<p>Visionox may not be a household name when it comes to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/OLED">OLEDs</a>, but the company&#8217;s roots go back to the strong OLED project team of Tsinghua University, one of the most prestigious universities for science and technology in the world. What&#8217;s even more interesting is that he revealed Visionox is also going to supply OLEDs to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei">Huawei</a> very soon.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/08/27/huami-unveils-the-amazfit-x-concept-watch-with-a-flexible-curved-display/">Huami unveils the Amazfit X Concept Watch with a flexible curved display</a></strong></h6>
<p>It looks like Visionox has become China&#8217;s new favorite for developing experimental displays. Apart from the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-mi-mix-alpha/">Mi Mix Alpha</a> concept, Visionox is also supplying flexible OLEDs for Xiaomi&#8217;s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/03/27/xiaomis-foldable-smartphone-features-in-official-video-teaser/">dual folding smartphone</a>. Further, the flexible AMOLED display for <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/zte-axon-10-pro/">ZTE&#8217;s Axon 10 Pro</a> is also supplied by the same company.</p>

<p>But Visionox is also part of another experimental product, coincidentally, also called as the Alpha. In case you still haven&#8217;t figured it out, I&#8217;m talking about the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/zte-nubia-alpha/">Nubia Alpha</a>, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/02/26/nubia-alpha-foldable-watch-phone-announced/">foldable watch shaped smartphone</a>, that features a four-inch flexible display from Visionox. The Chinese OLED maker currently has around 6,000 OLED patents to its name and has two plants, one in Gu&#8217;an, Hebei province, and another one in Hefei, Anhui province for manufacturing flexible OLED panels.</p>

Some of the popular products you know have OLED panels supplied by Visionox onboard. Reports from China brightens the industry prospect of getting flexible OLED panels for foldable phones easily. The report indicates that Visionox is facilitating its expansion in display panels for smartphones, wearable devices, vehicle-mounted systems and smart homes due to the surging demand for flexible display screens.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/visionox.jpeg?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-264788" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/visionox.jpeg?x44794" alt="Visionox" width="1024" height="682" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/visionox.jpeg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/visionox-300x200.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/visionox-768x512.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/visionox-696x464.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/visionox-631x420.jpeg 631w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></p>
<p>Visionox&#8217;s vice-president is quoted by China Daily to have hinted that; &#8220;With the development of 5G, big data and cloud computing, the display panels will change peoples&#8217; lifestyles and enhance the visual experience.&#8221; The company VP also added that cutting-edge technologies will stimulate applications for flexible screens. Further, he said; &#8220;The OLED industry is growing very rapidly. Visionox will focus on independent innovation and team with other companies in the industrial chain to produce flexible products.&#8221;</p>
<p>The company exec also emphasized that flexible active-matrix organic light-emitting diodes or AMOLEDs will have wider applications in smartphones, computers, smart wearables, vehicles, smart homes, virtual reality and augmented reality. AMOLEDs are more flexible with faster response and have high contrast and wide visual angles when compared to traditional liquid crystal displays or LCD panels.</p>
<p>Also, Visionox disclosed that it has provided AMOLED screens for Xiaomi&#8217;s recently revealed under-screen camera since June. Xiaomi&#8217;s prototype foldable phone which was revealed earlier this year also uses an OLED display panel from Visionox, according to the VP. In addition, ZTE&#8217;s 5G phone, the Axon 10 Pro also utilises an AMOLED screen supplied by Visionox. Another product having Visonox AMOLED screen is the Nubia Alpha smartwatch-like phone with a 4-inch flexible screen.</p>
<p style="text-align: center"><strong><span style="color: #ff0000">EDITOR&#8217;S PICK:</span> </strong><a title="70Mai Smart Driving Assistant MIJIA Customized Edition now official" href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/07/17/70mai-smart-driving-assistant-mijia-customized-edition-now-official/" rel="bookmark"><strong>70Mai Smart Driving Assistant MIJIA Customized Edition now official</strong></a></p>
<p>On top of that, the VP disclosed that the company currently has about 6,000 OLED patents. The firm has two sixth-generation flexible AMOLED display screen production lines in Gu&#8217;an, Hebei province, and Hefei in Anhui province. Its AMOLED display screen production line in Gu&#8217;an went into operation last year and can turn out 30,000 glass substrates (1,500 mm by 1,850 mm) every month. The production line can also meet the high-end, foldable screen demand for 90 million smartphones. Visionox started building its second flexible AMOLED production line in Hefei in December. It also has a monthly capacity of 30,000 substrates.</p>
<p>Although Samsung and LG currently blaze the trail in terms of revenue from OLED displays, with the push from Chinese firms like Visionox and even BOE technology, we expect to see a change in the market structure in no distant time.</p>

The company has always dedicated itself to advancing innovation in semiconductor display technologies such as TFT-LCD and AMOLED, for the purpose of providing quality display products and services. Manufacturing LCD panels have been BOE&#8217;s stronghold where it utilises its proprietary (Advanced Super Dimension Switch (ADSDS) technology for liquid-crystal (LCD) panels. This technology is characterized by ultra-high definition, ultra-slim bezel,  high contrast-ratio, ultra-thinness, integrated touch solution, great energy efficiency, and environmental friendliness but is restricted to LCD panels.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/boe-display-5.jpg?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-155571" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/boe-display-5.jpg?x44794" alt="BOE display technology" width="505" height="326" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/boe-display-5.jpg 505w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/boe-display-5-300x194.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 505px) 100vw, 505px" /></a></p>
<p>However, in an industry where there is a rapid shift to OLED displays, BOE has unveiled its sixth generation of flexible AMOLED production line in a ceremony held in Chengdu, China. The production line is the wold&#8217;s second production line for flexible AMOLED panels and China&#8217;s first. The line is expected to break the monopoly enjoyed by Korean companies  Samsung, LG and others. Already, there are indications that Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo and other OEMs are showing interests in patronizing the BOE AMOLED display.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/boe-display-3.jpg?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-155569" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/boe-display-3.jpg?x44794" alt="BOE display technology" width="499" height="314" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/boe-display-3.jpg 499w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/boe-display-3-300x189.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 499px) 100vw, 499px" /></a></p>

<p>The company showcased a wide variety of flexible AMOLED panel designs at the ceremony and there is even a <a href="http://weibo.com/tv/v/FsjohzW4R?from=vhothttp://weibo.com/tv/v/FsjohzW4R?from=vhot" target="_blank" rel="noopener">video</a> showing all the samples they&#8217;ve got.  As you&#8217;d expected OLED panels with 18:9 aspect ratio where included, as well as thin, paper-like foldable screens. There was even a display exhibited which looked like the iPhone X display. With this development, Samsung is likely going to be the hardest hit since it enjoys a large share of patronage.</p>

According to a recent report by the Photonics Industry Technology Development Association (PIDA), worldwide purchases of OLED panels have increase. The association which is a nonprofit organization gathering technology and market analysis worldwide for Taiwanese optoelectronic industries, also projected that the market share in high-end televisions is expected to reach 68% in 2020.</p>

<div class="itemIntroText">
<p>This is an indication that OLED panels are gradually replacing all other types of display panels on modern television display. A report by South Korea-based UBI Resear reveals that last year alone, international vendors shipped approximately 260 million OLED panels estimated to be worth $11.7 billion USD. That figure is expected to peak at 370 million units by the end of this year, 2016 thus taking the industry&#8217;s value to $16. billion. That figure could rise to 1.25 billion units valued at $61.4 billion by 2020.</p>

<p>PIDA also highlighted the fact that three notable advancements in OLED displays, namely Micro LEDs, Quantum Dot LEDs and printing displays (flexible OLED panels) are currently being used by leading international vendors along side OLEDs. All three are recent technologies but are gradually finding their way into devices. LG is reported to have started supplying flexible OLEDs panels while Micro LED could be used by Apple in its iPhones in the near future.</p>

One of such features is the<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2016/10/16/xiaomi-mi-note-2-could-feature-curved-oled-display-lg/"> flexible OLED display</a> that the device uses.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/mi-note-2-01/" rel="attachment wp-att-104263"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-104263" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/mi-note-2-01.jpg?x44794" alt="xiaomi mi note 2" width="861" height="484" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/mi-note-2-01.jpg 861w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/mi-note-2-01-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/mi-note-2-01-768x432.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 861px) 100vw, 861px" /></a></p>
<p>Long before the launch date of the Mi Note 2 was revealed, some set of renders of a flexible display were leaked online. It was thought that the display was actually the Mi Note 2 until it was revealed that the device would feature a flexible OLED display panel that bends in all directions. While we cannot feel the flexibility because the panel is under the glass display, the device indeed came with a flexible display. It was also rumored that the flagship&#8217;s display will be supplied by either Samsung or LG. LG was later on tipped to be the supplier of the flexible OLED.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/mi-note-2-lg/"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-104526" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/mi-note-2-lg.jpg?x44794" alt="mi-note-2-lg" width="593" height="122" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/mi-note-2-lg.jpg 593w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/mi-note-2-lg-300x62.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 593px) 100vw, 593px" /></a></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>That rumor seem to have gotten a confirmation that indeed the Mi Note 2&#8217;s flexible display was manufactured and supplied by LG and not Samsung. Although Xiaomi was mute about the details about who supplied the OLED like it did with the Redmi Pro, well-known industry analyst Sun Changxu has stated that in fact, the flexible OLED display is from LG.</p>
