Google is adding its Gemini AI to Maps, bringing a smarter and more conversational driving experience. The update lets drivers use voice commands for navigation and other tasks without touching their phones, making it easier to get help while keeping their hands on the wheel.

With Gemini built into Maps, users can ask for things like “Find a budget-friendly restaurant with vegan options along my route” and “What’s parking like there?” before saying “OK, let’s go there.” Gemini can also handle connected tasks, such as “Add a calendar event for soccer practice tomorrow at 5 p.m.” Once permission is given, it syncs directly with Google Calendar. Drivers can also ask about popular dishes, get news updates, or check sports scores while navigating.

Google has also made it simpler to report road conditions. Drivers can say, “I see an accident,” “There’s flooding ahead,” or “Watch out for that slowdown” to share traffic updates right away. The Gemini-powered navigation will start rolling out in the coming weeks on Android and iOS, with Android Auto support coming soon.

Maps will also start giving directions based on real-world landmarks instead of distance markers. Instead of hearing “Turn right in 500 feet,” users will get clearer guidance like “Turn right after the Thai Siam Restaurant,” with the landmark shown on the map. This update uses data from more than 250 million mapped places and Street View images to identify visible landmarks. Landmark-based navigation is now rolling out on Android and iOS in the U.S.

Google Maps is also adding proactive traffic alerts. Even if you are not navigating, Maps can now notify you about unexpected road closures or heavy traffic ahead. This feature is rolling out on Android in the U.S.

Lastly, the new Lens feature built with Gemini lets you explore places visually. By pointing your phone’s camera at a restaurant or store, you can ask questions like “What’s this place known for?” or “What’s the vibe inside?” Lens with Gemini will begin rolling out later this month in the U.S. on Android and iOS.

The AI then analyzes Google’s extensive database of locations and will provide personalized recommendations with photos, ratings, and reviews. Users can further refine their search by asking follow-up questions without needing to rephrase their initial query.

According to Google, the system is designed to work “no matter how specific, niche, or broad your needs might be.” To illustrate this, the company shared an example involving searching for thrift stores in San Francisco, where users can simply inquire about “places with a vintage vibe in SF.”

You will then get the results that neatly categorized into sections such as clothing stores, vinyl shops, and flea markets. Each category includes photo carousels and review summaries, helping users understand why a particular place might be of interest to them.

Google emphasizes that this is a closed beta program, aiming to gather feedback from Local Guides before a wider release. The company says this feedback will help shape the feature and ensure it meets user needs effectively.

While the current availability is limited, this integration of generative AI into Google Maps certainly feels like a useful features for new travellers in new city and country. Google’s powerful language models will analyze information provided by community members under the Local Guides program, as well as information about more than 250 million locations.

This way, you can easily find a place that suits your preferences. Google states that the system will work “no matter how specific or broad your needs are.” The company provides a comprehensive example related to thrift stores in San Francisco.

In this example, a person requests vintage thrift spots in the city through the application. AI models analyze nearby places using photos, ratings, and community reviews. As a result, the application presents a series of options with photo carousels and review summaries.

This productive AI can go even further. If you want the application to find a suitable lunch spot that matches the retro vibe of the mentioned vintage store, it will automatically search for a place in line with that atmosphere. Google is after a lofty goal: aiding its partners in cutting down one gigaton of carbon emissions by the end of this decade.

Initially a pilot in four Israeli intersections, the program’s success—a reduction in fuel use and intersection delays by up to 20 percent—led to its expansion to 12 global cities. Locations now include Rio de Janeiro, Manchester, and Jakarta, and Google has plans to broaden its reach in 2024.

Yael Maguire, Google’s VP of Geo Sustainability, said the system is unique in its scalability and cost-effectiveness, suggesting a potential 30% reduction in traffic stops. What’s more, city engineers can start seeing the impact within weeks of implementation. Results from Manchester show emission levels and air quality improving by as much as 18%.

A family is suing Google and others, alleging that the Maps app led their husband to his death. Here are the details…

The Lawsuit Targets Google Maps, Alleging Faulty Directions Caused Tragedy

In September 2022, a man named Philip Paxson tragically lost his life while attempting to cross a damaged bridge in North Carolina. The Paxson family has since filed a lawsuit against Google, claiming that despite the bridge having collapsed nine years ago, Google Maps still provided directions across it. A representative from Google stated that the company is investigating the allegations.

According to the lawsuit, Philip, a father of two, was returning home from his daughter’s friend’s ninth birthday party when the accident occurred. He was in an unfamiliar neighborhood at the time. His wife had earlier dropped off their two daughters at home and stayed back to help with cleaning, which was why Philip was alone in the car.

Notably, the warning signs indicating the bridge’s collapse had been removed by vandals, leaving no cautionary signals for drivers. In the lawsuit, three local companies were also sued, being held responsible for the bridge’s maintenance. Philip’s wife, Alicia Paxson, expressed her grief, saying, “Our daughters keep asking how and why their father died. I can’t find the words to explain it to them because even as an adult, I can’t comprehend how those responsible for the GPS directions and the bridge could show such disregard for human life.”

The Google spokesperson expressed deep sympathy, stating, “We deeply share the Paxson family’s pain. Our aim with Google Maps is to provide accurate navigation, and we are investigating this case.” The family’s lawyers mentioned that Philip trusted Google Maps for directions since he was unfamiliar with the local roads. They expected it to guide him safely back to his home, wife, and daughters.

Tragically, while driving cautiously on a rainy, dark night, Philip followed Google’s inaccurate directions without suspicion, leading him to what locals refer to as the “Bridge to Nowhere.” He subsequently fell into a stream and drowned. The lawsuit also points out that local residents had contacted Google multiple times since the bridge’s collapse in 2013, urging them to update their online maps.

Another reason for fake contributions could be attempts to manipulate search results or damage the reputation of a business or location. For example, a competitor of a local business might leave fake negative reviews to try and hurt their business. However, the tech giant recently explained in a blog post how it tackles fake contributions to the platform, keeping it unbiased and safe for everyone who uses it.

The first way involves using machine learning to spot patterns of potential abuse. In one instance, automated systems detected a sudden uptick in Business Profiles with websites that ended in .design or .top, which were quickly confirmed as fake and removed by the team of analysts. The second instance involves a new machine learning model that recognizes numbers overlaid on contributed images, which helps detect and block fraudulent and policy-violating images before they’re published.

In 2022, Google made significant progress in combatting fake content. As per their blog post, they removed over 115 million policy-violating reviews, blocked or removed over 200 million photos and 7 million videos, and stopped 20 million attempts to create fake Business Profiles. Additionally, they took legal action against fraudsters who were impersonating the company and selling fake reviews online and shared their best practices with government agencies to tackle fake reviews industry-wide.

While scammers will continue to evolve their strategies, it is clear that Google’s teams will continue to invest in the latest technology and work around the clock to keep contributed content on Google Maps authentic, safe, and reliable. Google Maps has evolved to become a great navigational tool providing useful directions to road users on the quickest routes and other ancillary information. But a potentially fatal flaw was noticed recently when it directed users to ply roads that were closed or dangerous due to the massive snowfall in the area. A horrified user Crystal A. Kolden (@pyrogeog) tweeted Google Maps with a screenshot showing the route between Sacramento, California, and Reno, Nevada.

Kolden pointedly labeled Google Maps as an abject failure. He accused Google Maps of sending people up a poorly maintained forest road with the risk of fatal accidents due to the terrain and a severe blizzard. Although there were no verified reports of accidents in the area that could be linked to the dangerous Google Maps directions, it is still deeply concerning.

The directions recommended by Google Maps take travelers through Marysville Road, a narrow two-lane path that passes through the Tahoe National Forest. Another Twitter user warned Android users of Google Maps, saying that the Android version of the app does not seem to report road closures.

With the majority of flagship smartphones scheduled to launch this year being already available in the market, Google’s Pixel 6 series is likely the only premium flagship lineup yet to go on sale.

Now, Google is apparently planning a launch event on 5th October where the company will be announcing new products for Nest, Maps, and Flights. The report also mentions that this event doesn’t have anything to do with the Google Pixel series smartphones.

The development comes through Mishaal Rahman who shared screenshots of the now-deleted CNET article which detailed this upcoming 5th October event of Google. It revealed that the company will announce new smart speakers and security devices along with some changes and new features coming to Google Maps and Google Flights.

As noted, Google Pixel 6 series flagship smartphones are not a part of the agenda for this event as the company is expected to launch the premium smartphones on 19th October. It is expected that the phones will be available for purchase around 28th October. It’s also being reported that apart from the Pixel 6 series, the company could also announce its first foldable smartphone at the same event.

Google has already revealed some key details about the upcoming phones. The Pixel 6 comes with a 6.4-inch Full HD+ display offering a 90Hz refresh rate while the Pro model has a 6.7-inch QHD+ display offering a 120Hz refresh rate.

The highlight of the Pixel 6 series remains its processor as the phones will come powered by Google’s own chipset — Tensor. Apart from on-device AI and ML capability, the chip is claimed to have significant improvement in translation, captioning, and dictation. The chipset is likely to be an unreleased Samsung Exynos 9855 SoC.

The standard model features a dual-camera setup on the back while the Pixel 6 Pro has a triple-camera setup that includes a wide-angle lens, an ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 4x telephoto lens. The photography performance is expected to top the charts as the chipset is focused on photo output and uses artificial intelligence along with machine learning.

Google has announced several new features coming to the Google Maps application. One of the interesting features coming to the app is the ability to help you find your way through indoor spaces like airports, malls, and train stations using augmented reality.

The new Google Maps feature, called Live View AR, overlays digital guides on top of the real world to provide directions as you look through your phone’s display. So, if you are in an airport, just search for what you’re looking for in Google Maps, and the markers will guide you with arrows and other digital indicators.

The Live View feature was first launched for Android and iPhone in 2019 but was initially limited outdoors directions. The feature can be accessed by searching for something in Google maps on your phone, tapping “Directions” and then, when available, tapping the “Live View” option next to “Start.”

This new feature called Live View AR is first rolling out in some malls in Chicago, Long Island, New York, Los Angeles, Newark, New Jersey, San Francisco, San Jose, California, and Seattle. In the coming months, it will also launch in airports, malls, and transit stations in Tokyo and Zurich. Other cities and locations will also eventually support the feature.

The company says that it will roll out other features in an update to Google Maps in the coming months, which includes air quality information, integration with grocery stores for curbside pickup, and an option to select the most eco-friendly route when driving.

Google had recently introduced several new Android features like Emoji Kitchen and auto-narrated audiobooks. Now, the company has added six new features that should be available for everyone very soon.

The company is rolling out Dark Mode for Google Maps, a new Password Checkup tool for Android users, ability to schedule messages in Google Messages, new Assistant commands that can be used hands-free, a new version of TalkBack, and some more customizations for Android Auto. Here is a list of the same, with information about the changes and updates.

Password Checkup Tool

The password checkup tool from Google is very helpful as it checks the user’s saved login credentials against “known compromised passwords.” The feature has been available for Desktop users and now it is coming to Android.

If the user has enabled the Autofill on the smartphone for saving credentials, the service will check for any compromised information and then Google will recommend changes to be made, if needed.

Message Scheduling

Google Messages application from the company is confirmed to get the ability to schedule messages. The feature was spotted by some users in September last year but wasn’t officially confirmed by the company.

Users can now finally schedule message just by opening the app, typing out the message to the contact and then long-pressing the send button to get options for scheduling. The app will also show suggested timings but users can set their own date and time.

Google Maps Dark Mode

Dark Mode has been introduced in almost all applications of Google and now the company is finally bringing it to Google Maps. The feature was expected to be available around September 2020 but has been delayed and now it’s finally here.

To enable Dark Mode in Google Maps, the user will need to go to the Settings in the application and then look for “Theme.” In there, toggle the option for “Always in Dark Theme” or anything else from the options.

Hands-Free Google Assistant Commands

This isn’t a new feature as the hands-free commands for Google Assistant have been available for some time. However, the company is now expanded the list of commands to make it easier to use.

As per the announcement, the user will now be able to set an alarm, play music, send text messages or make calls, all without unlocking the phone. There’s also a new set of glanceable cards showing basic info on the lock screen.

Updated TalkBack

Android has a screen reader named TalkBack which is aimed at those who are blind or with low vision. It is now getting revamped with more intuitive gestures, a unified menu, a new reading control menu, and more.

The company claims that it has added several new easy-to-learn multi-finger gestures for Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices to make it easier to interact with apps. It has also added new reading controls that are adjusted with 3-finger swipe. There are also new voice commands, support for two new languages in TalkBack’s braille keyboard, and more.

Android Auto Customizations

A new update to the Android Auto service will being support for custom wallpapers as well as voice-activated games. The company is also planning to offer home screen shortcuts for things like contacts and tasks like checking weather or adjusting thermostat through Google Assistant.

It will also roll out a new new split-screen view when the car has a wider display and a privacy screen when there are others along with the user in the car.

Google Maps is arguably the best maps and navigation app. Over the years, the search giant has updated it with new features and functionalities.Currently, the company is rolling out a server-side update to certain users, which enables a new car mode UI.

The Mountain View-based tech giant already offers a dedicated app called Android Auto for cars. Last year, the company revealed that it will be replaced by Google Assistant Driving Mode, however, that is yet to happen.

Ahead of it, the firm is now seeding out a server-side update enabling a similar car mode UI inside the Google Maps itself. This mode comes after the addition of the music playback option back in June.

This feature was first reported by Android Police and as per the screenshots shared by the publication, we can see that users will be treated with large icons for calls, messages, music apps, and messaging apps.

These icons are larger so that users can focus more on their driving  rather than their phone. In total, there are three tabs – one for voice, another for home screen with the set of applications as mentioned above, and a Maps icon to select navigation.

Google is constantly working to create awareness among people about COVID-19. It’s Google Maps has already has a COVID-19 alert, checkpoints. The new update will add a new “COVID-19 info” tab on the top-right corner. This is intended to help Google Maps users get access to data on the infections around them. Open Google Maps and Select Layers>COVID-19 info and it will reveal a 7-day average of COVID-19 cases. As per Google, this calculates the average per 100,000 cases in the selected area.

To make things easier, Google also has new color codes to indicate the amount of increasing/decreasing cases as shown below:

• Grey: <1
• Yellow: 1 – 10
• Orange: 10 – 20
• Dark orange: 20 – 30
• Red: 30 – 40
• Dark red: 40+

Google Maps is arguably the best maps service for navigation. Last year, the Mountain View-based tech giant rolled out “Live View”, an AR directions mode to both Android and iOS. Earlier, it was only exclusive to Pixels. Now, the company has added an option to calibrate location using this mode.

GPS on smartphones does not work properly in dense urban areas. Hence, Google is introducing a new feature to lock user’s location properly via Live View.

Normally, to calibrate GPS on handsets, users will have to twist them in a certain pattern. It works most of the times, however, it may not function when the user is in a jam-packed area.

In such a situation, users can open Live View inside Google Maps and then point their phone’s camera to nearby buildings, street signs or other things to lock their location. This feature will use Google’s years worth of Street View data to recognize the current location of users.

The feature is currently live on both stable and beta versions of Google Maps Android app. It is not available for iOS for now. Also, it is worth noting that this feature will work on Android smartphones that are compatible with Google ARCore.

Pixel 4 series’ 90Hz screen was supposed to be one of its stand out features. But over the past one week, the phone’s screen has been standing out for all the wrong reasons. After it was recently discovered that Pixel 4 and 4 XL’s screen refresh rate changed according to screen brightness, 9to5Google has just found out that Google has blacklisted one of its own apps from running at 90Hz refresh rate.

According to a review of the Pixel 4 and 4 XL’s source code, it was discovered that both these models set the refresh rate to the default 60Hz when running apps like Google Maps. Three other apps, namely, Pokémon Go, Waze, and WeChat have also been blacklisted by the company from running at 90Hz. While it makes sense to limit Pokémon Go (Niantic capped the app’s refresh rate to 30 fps earlier this year due to its gameplay design) and even Waze and Maps’ refresh rate (these two maps applications were already said to lock in refresh rate at 60Hz ), WeChat has been blacklisted simply because of “poor performance”.

WeChat is a very powerful app with a lot of features and some of them might not be working well under 90Hz refresh rate. However, we haven’t heard of similar issues on OnePlus 7 Pro or 7T, both of which have 90Hz displays.

Fortunately, this is not something an update can’t solve. Once WeChat fixes the performance issue under 90Hz refresh rate, Google can send out an update to remove it from its blacklist.

During Google I/O conference last year,  the tech giant introduced a new Augmented Reality (AR) navigation feature for Google Maps. The feature was one of the biggest announcements which commanded lots of attention at the 2018 keynote event. There are indications that the AR navigation feature will soon be available on Google Maps. 

Google recently granted US tabloid, The Wall Street Journal early access to the AR mode feature where it had the opportunity to test the capabilities of the new feature. According to WSJ, the Maps app has a dedicated virtual button that switches on the AR mode. This opens up the camera and starts analysing your surroundings using Street View data. The app then superimposes arrows on to the real world to show where you have to head next. The feature also gets activated if you hold your phone upright for the camera to capture the real world. The feature overlays arrows, landmarks, maps, and possibly even an animated creature to show the way in a camera view that is displaying the actual environment around the users. WSJ also noted that Google Maps repeatedly displays a message that reads, “For your safety, keep your phone down while you walk”. It reportedly also advises users to be alert while walking, as using the feature could be distracting, and lead to accidents.

The feature that has been under testing since it was first announced, will soon be released to a few local guides who are essentially advanced Google Maps users. Google Maps has released significant updates for Android and iOS. The major update is now version 3.0 on iOS and 8.0 on Android.

Offline maps were added to Maps 7.0 but have not been seen on iOS. Users on Apple and Android can now make custom lists of crucial offline maps for areas with uncertain data connection. Cities can be saved easily in the application and assigned custom names for quick access.

Google Maps for Android has been updated to version 7, to present a refresher on the interface.

In addition, Google has enhanced navigation features with added new features that called as  “dynamic rerouting,” and traffic updates in real time. Google has recently bought Waze is an app bookmark navigation and traffic flow enough for the popular Android and iOS users, this is one sector that can be developed and will benefit Google Maps.

Google added that the update will bring a new way to search for and find local places popular to eat, drink, shop, play and hotels. The Directions “widget” could be listed under Shortcuts in some launchers, so look for it in Shortcuts instead of Widgets.

In the second quarter, Google Maps has a usage rate of 17.5 percent and a seat in the first place. Now, the usage rate dropped to 9 percent, and must be willing to sit in third place. However, the data is the data for all types of smartphones, and does not include cell phones that use the Symbian S40 OS.

It is quite strange, especially the very center of the booming Android OS in China. Unfortunately, most Chinese-made Android phone Google Maps is not installed. In addition, the website version of Google Maps also have limited access.

And, two applications have exceeded the popularity of Google Maps in China is Autonavi and Baidu. Both of these local applications each have a usage rate of 25.9 percent and 19.1 percent.
