Xiaomi has officially pulled the plug on MIUI, which was the company’s starting point and later became one of the most popular Android skins in the world, with more than 500 million monthly active users at its peak. Following the HyperOS release, Xiaomi upgraded millions of its devices to the new OS, while many were added to the end-of-life (EOL) list.

However, two devices continued to receive MIUI updates even in 2026. We’re talking about the Redmi A2 and Redmi A2+. Both devices received Android 13 as their major OS upgrade, but continued to receive security patches and minor updates. The last update for them arrived in December with the firmware version V14.0.44.0.TGOMIXM, although the official website mentions EOL on March 24, 2026.

That day has arrived for the last MIUI-running devices, and they’re now officially retiring from all kinds of software updates. That also leads to a complete discontinuation of the MIUI legacy, which initially began as a custom ROM project for third‑party Android phones.

How MIUI became one of Android’s most popular skins

MIUI was actually Xiaomi’s first product, released before the company launched any hardware. It was introduced in August 2010 and was based on Android 2.2 Froyo. Early MIUI builds were distributed as a custom ROM for third-party Android phones.

MIUI quickly attracted an enthusiastic community because it offered weekly beta updates, aggressive feature additions, and ports to non-Xiaomi devices. This community-first origin story helped MIUI gain a reputation as a “tinker-friendly” skin, with robust rooting and modding support compared to other OEM UIs of the time.

MIUI focused on user-visible customization rather than stock Android minimalism. Soon, MIUI started bundling its own apps for core functions such as phone, messaging, notes, music, and gallery. Xiaomi also brought in a powerful theme engine that could change icons, fonts, sounds, lock screens, and system UI elements, well before most of its competitors.

Some of the notable features that later became part of MIUI’s identity include Second Space, Dual Apps, App Lock, hidden apps, and built-in call recording. Doubling down on MIUI’s popularity, Xiaomi entered the hardware market by launching Mi-branded phones in China, and later expanded to India and other global markets.

MIUI crossed 100 million global monthly active users in 2015, 200 million in 2018, 300 million in 2019, 400 million in early 2021, and surpassed 500 million monthly active users worldwide by November 2021. At its peak, roughly 15% of the world’s population was using a Xiaomi/Redmi/Poco phone running MIUI.

Why did Xiaomi shut down MIUI?

In October 2023, Xiaomi officially announced that a new operating system, Xiaomi HyperOS, would replace MIUI. Just a few days later, Xiaomi launched the Xiaomi 14 as the company’s first phone preloaded with HyperOS. But why did Xiaomi feel the need to ditch MIUI and move to HyperOS?

Well, the decision was made for good reasons. Despite MIUI’s success, Xiaomi was finding it challenging to connect hundreds of millions of devices across 200 product categories, from smart speakers to air conditioners, and eventually cars. Back then, Xiaomi had a mix of firmware stacks, making unified development and cross-device experience difficult to implement.

The decision to switch to HyperOS wasn’t made out of the blue. The company began exploratory development in 2014 and R&D in 2017, with the aim of supporting all ecological devices and applications through an integrated system framework.

HyperOS takes MIUI experience to the next level

Xiaomi HyperOS is described as a human-centric operating system built on an integration of a deeply evolved Android base and Xiaomi’s in-house Vela IoT system, running atop a Linux kernel. It takes less space than MIUI and delivers better performance and a more consistent experience.

HyperOS is the pillar of Xiaomi’s “Human x Car x Home” strategy, designed to connect personal devices, smart home products, and EVs into a coordinated platform, enabling them to share context and services. One of the key elements of this new OS is “HyperConnect,” which enables real-time networking and device discovery. So, a phone can, for example, act as a key for a car, mirror its camera to a TV, or manage smart home devices without relying on a traditional setup that requires Android-plus-vendor apps.

While Xiaomi HyperOS focuses primarily on a unified OS with deeper integration among Xiaomi devices, it also offers better resource utilization, tighter security, and a consistent experience while preserving much of MIUI’s interface language.

It hurts more when popular devices reach the end of life (EOL), as that impacts a large group of people. Sadly, that time has arrived for the popular Xiaomi 12 series, which is now officially retiring from all kinds of software updates, including HyperOS updates and security patches.

As mentioned on the official security center page (via Xiaomi Time), the update cycle for the Xiaomi 12 series has finally concluded. That means it won’t receive HyperOS updates, security patches, or feature drops. Here’s a list of affected devices and their final HyperOS/Android OS versions.

• Xiaomi 12 Pro: HyperOS 3.0 / Android 15
• Xiaomi 12 Lite: HyperOS 1.0 / Android 14

All three Xiaomi 12 models were launched with Android 12, but didn’t receive the same software support. Being premium models, the Xiaomi 12 and 12 Pro promised an extra OS upgrade over the Xiaomi 12 Lite. As a result, both are retiring with Android 15, while the Xiaomi 12 Lite will spend its life running Android 14. 

Alongside the Xiaomi 12 series, the Redmi Note 12 5G has also been added to the EOL list. This smartphone launched with Android 12 and, after two OS upgrades, it now runs Android 14 with HyperOS 2.0 on top.

If your Xiaomi phone is on the list, it’s best to upgrade to go for a new hardware. That will receive the latest HyperOS updates with plenty of new features and enhancements, and security patches will ensure protection against the latest vulnerabilities.

Xiaomi has started rolling out the HyperOS 3.0.15.0 update for its flagship Xiaomi 17 Ultra. This 9.4GB update brings various system optimizations, camera upgrades, and security enhancements. The Leica Edition of the device includes an exclusive feature, which we will discuss at the end.

What’s new in this update?

The update improves the camera experience on the Xiaomi 17 Ultra. Xiaomi has added a new front-and-rear dual-view mode, which allows users to record video simultaneously using both cameras. The 200MP mode now includes a standard watermark option.

Xiaomi has optimized Dolby Vision recording, boosting brightness and dynamic range for improved video quality. The update also refines motion photo functionality by enabling it by default during video recording, with the option to switch to static photos in the camera settings.

Xiaomi has made improvements to the system as well. The update enhances the auto-brightness feature in night scenes, creating a better viewing experience in low-light environments. It fixes occasional app launch issues that caused temporary unresponsiveness. If you’re using a Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO phone running HyperOS, you might notice ads showing up inside many system apps, from the Downloads and Mi Browser to Music, Security and Themes. Fortunately, while Xiaomi doesn’t remove all advertising by default, you can turn most of it off with a few simple settings changes. So here’s how to clean up your phone and cut down on ads across the OS.

Disable the MSA System Ad Service

Many of the ads you see originate from a service called MSA (MIUI System Ads), which is a telemetry-linked background app responsible for displaying recommendations and ads system-wide. Turning this off is one of the most important first steps:

1. Open Settings
2. Go to Fingerprints, face data & screen lock (or Passwords & security on some Xiaomi phones)
3. Tap Authorization & revocation
4. Toggle MSA off and tap Revoke to confirm

Doing this stops the system from serving many ads, though you’ll still need to disable certain app-specific ads separately.

Turn Off Personalized Ads

You can also disable targeted ads that use your data:

1. Open Settings and then head to Privacy
2. Select Ad services or Advertising services
3. Turn off Personalized ad recommendations

Once again, this wouldn’t remove all advertisements, but it prevents the system from tailoring these to your behavior.

Disable Ads Inside Individual System Apps

HyperOS places ad toggles inside many pre-installed apps. While you’ll likely never interact with most of them, you’ll need to turn these off one app at a time to get a true ad-free experience. The exact labels may differ slightly by region or build, but they’re usually easy to spot:

• Downloads: Open the app > menu (three dots) > Settings > turn off Show ads.
• Mi Browser: Profile icon > Settings > Advanced > disable Show ads.
• Mi Video Player: Profile > gear icon > disable Personalized recommendations (note: in some builds, this only lasts 90 days).
• Music: Profile > Settings > disable Allow permanent notifications, then in Advanced settings turn off Show ads and Personalized recommendations.
• Security: Settings > disable Show recommendations, also turn off under the Cleaner section.
• Themes: Account > gear > disable Show ads and Personalized recommendations.
• App Vault: Open App Vault > menu > Manage services > turn off App suggestions and Ads.

Disable Ads in Other Places

While HyperOS doesn’t offer a universal one-click switch for all ads (although such a toggle has been spotted in leaked test builds), you can also reduce other ad-feed interruptions:

• Some devices include an “Ads in System Apps” toggle inside Mi Account > About Xiaomi Account
• For persistent ads or notifications from the msa daemon, you can disable its notifications: go to Settings > Apps > Manage apps > View all apps > msa > Notifications and turn off Show notifications.
• Advanced users sometimes set up private DNS ad-blockers (e.g., using AdGuard DNS) to block ad servers at the network level.

Why It’s Worth Doing

HyperOS is still evolving, and despite the various improvements over time, ads remain a controversial part of the experience. This is especially frustrating when they appear inside system apps or notifications. While a completely ad-free operation may require patience and thorough cleanup, going through these settings drastically reduces the amount of unwanted content you’ll see and improves both privacy and battery life. Keep in mind that after system updates, some settings may reset, so revisiting them occasionally helps maintain your preferred, ad-free configuration.

When Will the Android 17 Update Drop?

Xiaomi has released its weekly HyperOS bug tracker, revealing ongoing problems with automatic shutdowns and camera malfunctions affecting multiple devices.

Problems Still Being Fixed

The Redmi Note 14 and Redmi Note 14 Pro shut down unexpectedly when the battery gets low. The battery percentage doesn’t match the actual charge level. This affects OS version 3.0.4.0.WOGMIXM and OS version 3.0.3.0.WOFMIXM. Xiaomi sent a test fix to some users. It worked for some people but others still have the problem. The company tells users to fully drain and recharge their phone as a temporary fix while they wait for more feedback.

Xiaomi fixed eleven issues this week:

Performance issues: Messenger stopped crashing on Xiaomi Pad 7. Weather app now updates data on Xiaomi 15T Pro. Apps no longer freeze on Redmi Note 13 Pro+ 5G. POCO X7 Pro fixed camera lag.

Hardware issues: Screen color displays correctly on POCO F8 Pro. NFC works on Redmi Note 14 Pro. Wired charging works on Redmi Note 14 5G and POCO M7 Pro 5G. Redmi Note 14 Pro no longer shuts down automatically.

Feature issues: POCO F8 Ultra can now switch Dolby Sound to 3D Surround mode.

Well, the Xiaomi Mi 11 is receiving a new HyperOS update after reaching the end of the update cycle over a year ago.

As spotted by Ytechb, the latest update for the Mi 11 comes with the firmware version OS2.0.6.0.UKBCNXM. It’s based on Android 14 and currently rolling out to the users in China. If you’re carrying a Mi 11 in China, check for the latest update via the software update section in the Settings app.

According to the changelog, the update addresses bugs in some usage patterns. The system stability also gets better. As expected, the update doesn’t include any new features or upgrades, as such updates primarily focus on squashing bugs or critical issues. However, it’s great that Xiaomi is still committed to fixing problems on a discontinued device.

The latest update for Xiaomi Mi 11 is currently exclusive to the China ROM. However, if the same issues also affect models outside China, the update may be expanded to more regions.

If you’re still running Mi 11 as your daily driver, you’re missing out on a bundle of new features and groundbreaking upgrades, such as HyperIsland, cinematic lock screens, AI tools, cross-device connectivity, strong security features, and many more. Xiaomi has shared its latest weekly HyperOS bug report, confirming several fixes and listing the issues that will be addressed in upcoming updates. The report covers problems found across Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO devices by testers and community users.

The first fix applies to the Xiaomi 15T Pro running the OS3.0.5.0.WOSEUXM beta build. Users were unable to download the update package. Xiaomi says the problem occurred because the update notification was sent before the download file was ready. The file is now available, and the update can be downloaded without any issues.

Another issue affected the Xiaomi 15T Pro on the OS3.0.4.0.WOSEUXM beta version. Users reported that the update details were not visible. Xiaomi has confirmed that a permission problem in the beta tester group caused this. The changelog now appears correctly.

A third fix covers all devices running HyperOS. Google Dialer was asking for microphone permission even after users had already granted it. Google pushed a cloud-controlled update that resolved the problem. Xiaomi says it has not received any new reports after the fix.

Xiaomi has also listed issues that are still being worked on. The Xiaomi Pad 7 may face Wi Fi disconnections and abnormal UI behavior in Game Booster. The Xiaomi 15 Ultra may produce no sound when connected to a Bluetooth device, and some users are experiencing random reboots and timer errors. Random reboots also affect the Xiaomi 15, and the Instagram camera is not working on the device. The POCO F5 has a volume panel that may freeze. The POCO X6 Pro 5G may turn off on its own.

Here’s Why These Xiaomi Devices Won’t Get HyperOS 3.1

The Chinese tech giant is finally releasing the HyperOS 3 update, arriving on various models already. Following up on the major update that upgrades the Android iteration, Xiaomi is getting ready to release the HyperOS 3.1 update as well. The beta program recruitment for HyperOS 3.1 is already live in the brand’s home market of China. However, HyperOS 3.1 will be limited to smartphones that receive the Android 16 update.

For those unaware, HyperOS 3.1 brings an updated recent apps drawer along with the Hyper Island feature, which is inspired by Apple’s Dynamic Island. Apart from this, the new recents drawer will also be included with refined memory management. There are also improvements to animations, faster app startup time, and much more. In Germany, some Xiaomi 15 users have reported that Wi-Fi is not working on version OS2.0.225.0.WOCEUXM (Beta). Xiaomi has confirmed that this issue is being analyzed. Another problem has been found on the POCO F7 running OS2.0.206.0.VOLEUXM, where Wi-Fi stays connected but does not work properly or disconnects automatically. A temporary solution is to reconnect to Wi-Fi or grant “Notification” permissions to the app, which may fix the issue for now.

Screen Recording and Charging Fixes

Some Xiaomi 15 users running OS2.0.225.0.WOCMIXM (Beta) and OS2.0.225.0.WOCEUXM (Beta) have noticed that the screen recording button pop-up window does not appear. Xiaomi said this will be fixed in an upcoming update.
For Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G and Redmi Note 12 Pro+ 5G, users have reported slow charging, especially when the device is warm. This problem has been fixed in version OS2.0.7.0.UMOIDXM, and Xiaomi recommends updating to this version to apply the fix.

It had long offered a maximum of three Android OS updates to its devices, which extended to four in late 2023, starting with the Xiaomi 13T series. The update policy was once again upgraded earlier this year to offer up to five major Android updates to select devices.

We’ve prepared a list of Xiaomi devices that are covered under this updated software policy, which promises five generations of Android updates. Review the list below to find out if your Xiaomi device is eligible for long-term OS updates.

These Xiaomi devices will get five major Android OS updates

The Redmi Pad 2 and Redmi Pad 2 4G were the company’s first phones to offer support for five major OS updates. The Redmi Pad 2 Pro and Xiaomi 15T Pro joined the list in September.

While Redmi Pad 2 Pro and Xiaomi 15T Pro users might find themselves lucky to be on the list, it’s disappointing that the devices launched in September 2025 with Android 15, not Android 16. That means all the devices on the above list will receive OS updates up to Android 20.

Only a few Xiaomi devices are currently covered under this new update policy. It’s likely that the majority, if not all, of upcoming high-end phones and tablets from the brand will also receive the same treat. Anyway, we’ll regularly update the list as and when more Xiaomi devices are announced, with a promise of five major Android updates.

With the latest software update policy, Xiaomi outperforms many of its competitors, including OnePlus, Vivo, and Realme, which are currently stuck with four Android updates, while matching Oppo and Motorola. Samsung and Google are currently leading the chart with seven years of both Android and security updates. Xiaomi will hopefully bridge the gap in the near future.

So this is an incremental update that likely brings minor refinements and system optimizations. Based on the company’s official HyperOS 3 roadmap, the Redmi Pad 2 Pro and Redmi 13 are planned to get the Android 16 OS based update sometime between November and December 2025 as a part of the second wave. Meaning, this could be the last HyperOS 2 update before the brand moves these devices to the latest software iteration.

Xiaomi has rolled out the latest HyperOS 3.0.17.0 update to the Xiaomi 17 Pro series (full review), adding new features and system optimizations. The update (build number 3.0.17.0.WPBCNXM) is around 712MB in size and is now available for users in China.

The new firmware enables dynamic rear display notifications, allowing users to view 12306 train trip reminders on the secondary screen. This feature targets commuters in China who rely on the 12306 service for railway bookings and real-time updates.

Xiaomi has also improved gesture recognition for the panda pet animation in low-light conditions and resolved a bug that caused rear display flickering in some scenarios.

In terms of system improvements, the update enhances overall stability and optimizes power consumption during specific tasks. Xiaomi has also made adjustments to improve gaming performance in select scenarios. The update fixes an issue where dual apps were unintentionally removed and corrects a problem that triggered automatic hands-free mode during incoming calls on third-party live-streaming apps. The October 2025 Android security patch is also included to improve device security.

Xiaomi recently confirmed that the Xiaomi 17 series has crossed one million units sold within just two days of launch. The 17 Pro Max model accounted for more than half of these sales. Both the 17 Pro and Pro Max crossed the 6,000 yuan (~$840) mark, which signals a shift toward a more premium pricing strategy.

Lu Weibing, Partner and President at Xiaomi Group, said the company is increasing production to meet the strong demand. He confirmed that the Xiaomi 17 series is selling faster than the Xiaomi 15 series, which launched last year.

Xiaomi also addressed early user feedback by launching a 1TB variant of the standard Xiaomi 17. This version went on sale on October 5 and is priced at 5,299 yuan (~$745), making it 200 yuan cheaper than the 1TB model of the Xiaomi 15.

Xiaomi said it is working to resolve temporary stock shortages and ensure wider availability. The strong response to the Xiaomi 17 series reflects the company’s continued push toward the high-end smartphone segment.

Xiaomi is the third-largest smartphone company with a market share of more than 10%, which means millions of users have to see those pesky ads that appear frequently, disturbing the user experience. Unfortunately, that’s true for premium phones as well.

Thankfully, there exist several methods that will remove the majority of ads on your Xiaomi smartphone to offer a cleaner software experience. Let’s go through them one by one.

If you’re wondering why Xiaomi shows ads on its phone, the answer is revenue, obviously. It has promised to keep hardware profits capped at 5% (after tax), but to grow the revenue, the brand offers many add-ons, extra services, and shows advertisements.

Disable ads by stopping the MSA app

MSA stands for “MIUI System Ads,” and it’s the hub of annoying ads on your Xiaomi phone. Disabling it will dramatically reduce the number of ads. However, you’ll still need to disable ads from Xiaomi apps to further clean up your software experience.

Steps to disable the MSA app:

1. Open the Settings app.
2. Select Fingerprints, face data, and screen lock. (MIUI users tap on Passwords & security).
3. Go to Authorization & revocation and toggle off msa.
4. Click Revoke to confirm your action.

Disable ad personalization

This won’t stop Xiaomi from serving you ads, but it instructs the brand not to use your usage data and personal preferences for showing personalized ads.

1. Open the Settings app.
2. Select Fingerprints, face data, and screen lock. (MIUI users tap on Passwords & security).
3. Go to Privacy and tap on Ad services.
4. Turn off Personalized ad recommendations.

Disable ads in Mi Browser

1. Open the Mi Browser app.
2. Tap the profile icon in the bottom-right corner and click the settings icon.
3. Select Privacy & security and toggle off Personalized services.

Disable ads in File Manager

Only MIUI users can turn off ads inside File Manager. This option isn’t available on HyperOS.

1. Open the File Manager app.
2. Click the hamburger menu button (the one with three horizontal lines) in the upper-left corner.
3. Select Settings and tap on About.
4. Turn off Recommendations.

In HyperOS, you can instruct Xiaomi not to collect data for the File Manager. This should stop serving you personalized ads. Here’s how to do it:

1. Open the File Manager app.
2. Tap the three-dot menu button and choose Settings.
3. Toggle off Withdrawal of consent.
4. Tap OK to confirm.

Disable ads in Security

1. Launch the Security app.
2. Tap the gear icon in the upper-right corner.

Step 8: Wait for approval

Xiaomi may take up to seven days to make a final decision on your beta application. You can check the status within the Mi Community app by navigating to ME > Beta testing.
