Kodak has launched a new 65-inch Mini QD Google TV in India under its IconiK Series lineup. The television combines Mini LED backlighting, Quantum Dot color technology, and a high refresh rate panel, along with built-in smart features based on the Google TV platform.

The TV features a bezel-less 65-inch display with 4K resolution of 3840 × 2160 pixels and a 120Hz refresh rate. It supports Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), which are useful for gaming and smoother motion performance. The panel uses Quantum Dot technology with Mini LED backlighting and includes 288 local dimming zones. Kodak claims peak brightness of up to 1500 nits. The display also supports Ultra Wide Color Gamut with 1.1 billion colors, along with Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HLG formats. Dolby Vision-Atmos support is also included for combined picture and sound enhancement.

Audio output is rated at 108W through a six-speaker system supported by two dedicated subwoofers. The TV supports Dolby Atmos for multi-channel surround sound, aiming to deliver a more immersive experience without requiring external speakers.

The television runs on a MediaTek processor paired with a Mali-G52 GPU. It includes 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage to handle the operating system and apps. On the software side, it runs Google TV, which provides access to apps through the Google Play Store. It also supports Google Assistant voice commands, built-in Chromecast, and Apple AirPlay for wireless streaming from compatible devices. The remote control includes quick access app buttons along with a dedicated mute button.

Connectivity options include dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, three HDMI ports, two USB ports, HDMI eARC, an optical audio output, and an Ethernet port for wired internet. Kodak is offering a one-year warranty with the television.

(SPPL), based in Noida, continues to hold a significant presence in the Indian market. SPPL is known to hold a wide number of licensed brands, including Thomson, Kodak, Blaupunkt, Westinghouse, and White-Westinghouse (Electrolux’s trademark).

In a conversation with Mrs. Pallavi Singh Marwah, Vice President of SPPL, we delve into the strategic positioning of these brands, especially in a declining Indian TV market this year. SPPL maintains ambitious revenue targets, aiming for 700–800 crores in the current financial year (2023–24). Mrs. Marwah offers insights into SPPL’s journey within the consumer electronics industry.

1. How do Thomson, Kodak, Blaupunkt and Westinghouse brands under SPPL compete and collaborate? Are they sold both online and offline?

Each brand under our umbrella is strategically positioned to cater to distinct customer segments. Thomson, for instance, is an online-exclusive brand available solely on Flipkart, while Westinghouse is exclusively sold on Amazon. In contrast, Kodak is accessible on both online platforms and through offline retail stores, dealers, and distributors. These brands are priced in accordance with their target audiences, and our range of televisions and products is designed with each brand’s long-term strategy in mind.

Blaupunkt as a brand has been present in India through its audio licensees for almost 25-30 years. It is also a brand that the middle age resonates with since high-end audio systems in cars were by Blaupunkt. It is a brand that we position as a premium one and has better audio quality since that is the brand’s forte.

2. Could you elaborate on software differences among Thomson, Kodak, Blaupunkt, and Westinghouse TVs and their unique features for diverse user preferences?

Since all these televisions are based on the Android platform, there’s limited flexibility to make extensive changes to the software. However, differentiation occurs through various introduced variants. For instance, there are distinctions like an Android-based TV or a Google TV that influence the user experience. Furthermore, differences exist in backlight technology, including Full HD, Ultra-HD, 4K, and QLED variants, which enhance the customer’s viewing experience. These factors help cater to diverse customer preferences and set each brand apart.

3. What drove the decision to increase manufacturing capacity to 2 million units annually, and how does the new greenfield manufacturing facility at Hapur contribute to this expansion?

The decision to expand our manufacturing capacity was driven by the fact that our current manufacturing facility was consistently operating at or above its maximum production capacity. To meet the growing demand for our products, the new manufacturing facility in Hapur was established. This additional space not only allows us to keep up with the increasing production requirements but also opens the door for us to potentially start manufacturing other product categories within our own facilities, which can further enhance our overall production capabilities and flexibility.

4. With SPPL’s success in FY 2022–23, what are the key factors that have contributed to the company’s growth in the smart TV market?

The company’s growth in the smart TV market in the past fiscal year can be attributed to a strong focus on backward integration. We’ve taken significant steps, such as setting up Surface Mount Technology (SMT) machines in-house. This move aligns with our ongoing effort to bring outsourced jobs back within the company, gradually progressing towards the goal of establishing a fully self-sustained, “Made in India” manufacturing unit.

5. Can you share insights into the current state of the Indian TV market and the challenges or trends that SPPL is navigating in this industry?

The Indian TV market is currently experiencing a decline this year, which presents our most significant challenge. We are striving to maintain our price points despite the increasing inflation, even though this impacts our profit margins. It’s worth noting that this year is seen as a recovery year for the industry as a whole, and we are working to navigate through these challenges and emerge successfully.

6. Could you elaborate on SPPL’s revenue targets for 2023–24 and beyond, along with their strategies and desired market share by 2024?

In the current financial year (2023-24), our target is to achieve a gross revenue of approximately 700-800 crores, with an even higher goal set for the following year, anticipating a 15% increase. To reach these targets, we’ve developed a strategic roadmap that includes expanding into additional product categories that can be manufactured in India.

Specifically, regarding televisions, our aim is to secure a 10-12% market share by the end of 2024. These targets are part of our broader growth strategy as we continue to evolve and expand within the Indian consumer electronics market.

7. With Xiaomi leading the smart TV market, what unique value does SPPL bring to consumers in India?

While Xiaomi’s TVs are built around their PatchWall platform, our televisions stand out by being entirely based on the Android/Google software. This distinction offers consumers a different user experience and access to the broader Android ecosystem, providing unique value in terms of software, apps, and integrations.

8. How is SPPL preparing for the festive sales season, especially with the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup coinciding, and what expectations do you have in terms of sales during this period?

In preparation for the festive sales season, coinciding with the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, we’ve taken several measures. We’ve introduced a special-edition TV and washing machine to align with the spirit of the World Cup. Additionally, we’ve established a partnership with Hotstar, offering free 7-day trials to our consumers.

We anticipate a notable increase in sales during this period due to the World Cup’s popularity and the festive atmosphere. These initiatives and the excitement surrounding the event are expected to contribute to a positive sales outcome.

9. Beyond TVs, SPPL has introduced washing machines under the White-Westinghouse brand. Can you tell us more about your foray into home appliances and the market response?

We’ve extended our product offerings into home appliances with the introduction of washing machines under the White-Westinghouse brand. Currently, both brands, White-Westinghouse for appliances and Westinghouse for televisions have only one category each.

While it’s still early in our journey into the home appliance market, we are actively exploring opportunities to expand our product range and offerings within this segment. The market response has been positive, and we are committed to growing our presence in the home appliance sector as part of our overall brand expansion strategy.

We are also looking into refrigeration, air conditioner manufacturing, air coolers, and air purifying systems.

10. Considering the growing demand for environmentally friendly products, does SPPL have any sustainability initiatives or plans related to eco-friendly manufacturing or materials?

In response to the growing demand for environmentally friendly products, SPPL has taken concrete steps to promote sustainability. We’ve adopted sustainable packaging practises for our products and prioritize energy efficiency in their design, assisting consumers in conserving energy. Our commitment to eco-friendliness extends to our washing machines, which are engineered to use less water during a single wash compared to conventional models. Additionally, we actively foster environmentally responsible behaviors among our employees, emphasizing the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling materials. Our dedication to creating a more sustainable and eco-friendly future is evident in both our products and everyday operations.

Here’s the Indian TV market’s current status:

In Q1 2023, the Indian TV market witnessed an 8 percent year-over-year decline, the first in six years. This was attributed to factors like rising inflation, supply chain disruptions, and the ongoing war in Ukraine. Conversely, in Q3 2023, the market rebounded with 33 percent year-over-year growth, driven by the festive season, increased disposable incomes, and the introduction of innovative TV models, as reported by Counterpoint Research.

Xiaomi currently leads the Indian TV market with a 23 percent market share, followed by Samsung in second place at 19 percent, and LG at 12 percent. Notably, SPPL brands such as Thomson, Kodak, and Blaupunkt rank among the top 10 players in the industry.

The Indian TV market is poised for an exciting and challenging journey in the coming months, with a projected shipment of 16 million units in 2023. It is expected to remain dynamic, offering both opportunities and hurdles for manufacturers and consumers alike.

Kodak has just announced 8 new smart TV models in the Indian market a month after its SE TV series launch. The new television lineup ranges from both an affordable to a flagship grade model. So let’s have a look at their price and specs.

Kodak 75 inch 4K QLED TV

Talking about the top end model first, this TV sports a tall 75 inch QLED display and is the most premium offering in the latest announcement. It offers high 4K resolution and offers 1.1 billion colors as well. Other notable features include support for Dolby MS12 and HDR10+. Under the hood, it is equipped with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage.

For audio, it has a total volume output of 40W from its speakers that support Dolby Atmos. This TV arrives with what the brand calls, an Airslim design and a bezel-less screen. It carries the model number 75MT5044 and will go on sale for a price tag of 98,888 INR and will be available for purchase via Flipkart.

Kodak 9XPRO series

Moving forward, we have the 9XPRO lineup that consists of a new series of affordable smart TV models. The 9XPRO portfolio arrives in multiple size options including 32 inch, 40 inch, 42 inch, and a 43 inch variant. All of these are equipped with the ARM Cortex A55x4 Realtek CPU that is paired with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. The base 32 inch model offers HD resolution, while the other TV models have a higher Full HD+ resolution. The Kodak 9XPRO series will run on Android 11 OS for TV and have a total audio output of 30W with Dolby Digital sound support.

Other notable features include, built in Netflix, Google Assistant, Chromecast, and come with a vast library of applications and games as well. The series has a starting price tag of 10,499 INR for the 32 inch model, while the 42 inch and 43 inch variants cost 16,999 INR and 17,999 INR respectively. The pricing for the 40 inch model is still unclear. The 32 inch model can be found on both Amazon and Flipkart, while the 43 inch model is only available on Flipkart. Similarly, the 40 inch and 43 inch TVs will be sold via Amazon.

Kodark CA PRO series

The CA PRO series sits in the middle of the flagship and entry level models with three smart TV entries. These include a new 50 inch, 55 inch, and a 65 inch TV. All three TVs will offer high 4K resolution and will be powered by a MT9062 processor that offers Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity. The new TVs also feature a bezel-less design similar to the 75 inch QLED model and deliver 40W output with Dolby Atmos enabled speakers.

These come with Chromecast and Google Assistant built in as well. It also offers more than 10,000 applications and games. The 50 inch TV costs 27,999 INR, while the 65 inch model costs 43,999 INR. Unfortunately, the pricing details for the 55 inch model are still unknown. The 50 inch and 65 inch CA PRO TVs will be sold through Flipkart as well as Amazon, but the 55 inch model will only be sold via Amazon.

Kodak brand licensee based in North America, C+A Global has launched the KODAK FLIK HD10 Smart Projector. This 1080p Full HD projector is capable of throwing images up to 150 inches (~381 cm) wide with a 2,000:1 contrast ratio and up to 200 lumens brightness. It comes with image perfecting tools like auto keystone correction to ensure a clear and crisp image.

The projector uses Android TV, which allows you to stream content from popular apps like Netflix, YouTube, and Amazon Prime, among others. You can also use Google Chromecast or Apple AirPlay to screen-mirror from a mobile device. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity options are available, and the device has HDMI, USB, and AUX ports.

The projector can be controlled via Google Assistant voice commands or the Google TV app on a smartphone. It also includes a physical remote with Google Assistant and Netflix buttons. The gadget measures 5.5 x 5.5 x 7 inches (~140 x 140 x 178 mm) and comes with a pair of 5W speakers built-in for a better audio experience.

Notably, Super Plastronics PVT LTD (SSPL) is the brand license of Kodak and they had also launched Thomson and Blaupunkt QLED televisions in the country recently. The Kodak QLED TVs are offered in 50, 55, and 65-inch screen sizes with a bezel-less design and a 96 percent screen-to-body ratio. They offer a 4K video resolution with support for Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HLG, and MEMC. The TVs feature AMO display technology that promises an outstanding viewing experience. On the audio front, the Kodak QLED TVs are equipped with two 20W stereo speakers with support for Dolby Atmos and Dolby Audio. 

Internally, the Kodak QLED TVs are equipped with a quad-core MediaTek MT9602 (A53) processor coupled with Mali-G52 MC1 GPU onboard. It packs 2GB RAM for smooth functioning and 16GB onboard storage for downloading apps and games. 

The Kodak QLED TVs run on Google TV and feature a built-in Google Assistant. The television ships with a voice remote with dedicated buttons for Netflix, Prime Video, and YouTube. Connectivity options on the TVs include dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth, three HDMI ports, two USB ports, and one Ethernet port. 

The Kodak QLED TVs start at Rs 33,999 for the 50-inch model. The 55 and 65-inch display variants are priced at Rs 40,999 and Rs 59,999 respectively. The televisions will be available for purchase from Flipkart as a part of the Big Billion Days sale.

The EV revolution could have led Kodak to announce its plans to convert its film manufacturing equipment to manufacture EV batteries. The company will be repurposing some of its high-tech machines originally meant for photography film into EV battery manufacturing equipment.

Kodak has made investments in Wildcat Discovery Technologies in driving its entry into EV battery manufacturing. Kodak says that the supercell Wildcat batteries require a similar coating and engineering inputs to its 35mm film. Therefore, only minimal retooling is required for it to enter into EV battery manufacturing. This could provide a huge boost to the EV battery industry which is grappling with costly production processes.

Kodak’s photography film manufacturing equipment is worth $70-80 million. The photography film production process is called ESTAR which uses polymers to create the films. The polymers require special chemical coatings, akin to the Wildcat battery production process. Kodak says the move into EV battery production could shore up its revenue substantially. The price of EV batteries massively dwarfs that of photography film. EV battery costs account for more than 50% of the cost of an electric vehicle in some instances.

Kodak is currently expanding its productive capability beyond photography. It is already in the production of components for pharmaceuticals, health care, and chemicals for lab operations. The addition of EV battery manufacturing could be an important milestone for Kodak.

The ramifications go beyond the EV industry as Kodak says that home storage batteries also rely on a similar coating process. This will be a massive departure from the past where Kodak-branded batteries were produced by other companies for use in its products. The expansion into battery production will see Kodak employing more staff in its expanding operations. Ordinarily, the photography film industry is a shrinking one experiencing layoffs and redundancies.

KODAK has launched several charging accessories in India. The KODAK-branded accessories include a wireless charging pad, three MagSafe wireless chargers, and a PD+QC USB wall charger with fast charging capability. The chargers come in sleek, elegant, and all-black designs. The new charging accessories are available from Amazon India and are priced between Rs. 799 (~$10) and Rs. 3,799 (~$48).

The new KODAK premium smartphone charging accessories are made from strong copper coils and neodymium (MagSafe chargers). The KODAK chargers can be used at home or in the office, as well as on the go. The wireless chargers come with safety features that prevent overcharging, current surge, over-voltage, overheating, and short circuit problems. They offer maximum safety for devices being charged. Auto-sensing is also featured in the KODAK chargers with up to 15W power.

The KODAK Magnetic Wireless Chargers (WCM201 and WCM101C) offer different sturdy supports while charging. The WCM201 is compact, portable, and can serve as a kickstand while charging. The WCM101C has a flexible head and a clamp for use inside your car. It keeps your smartphone charged while driving and using the phone’s GPS.

The KODAK Magnetic 3-in-1 Wireless Charger (WCM500) is MagSafe-compatible. It is a compact stand with an arched shape and serves as a MagSafe wireless charger for AirPods, iPhone 12, and the Apple Watch. It can charge multiple devices simultaneously.

The KODAK Wireless Charger (WC300) is suitable for charging your workstation. It is compatible with either Apple or Android devices from a wide range of brands. It also functions with and USB-C charger while providing a solid and secure platform for charging your device. The PA320 is a dual-port power adapter (PD and USB). It supports USB-A and USB-C charging and comes with BIS safety certification.

The least expensive accessory in the lineup is the PA320 Power Adapter at Rs. 799 (~$10) while the premium offering is the WCM500 at Rs. 3,799 (~$48). A 1-year warranty goes with all the KODAK charging accessories. All the products will be available on Flipkart and Amazon India. The specific release date though is still unknown at this time.

OPPO’s Find X3 series launched in March of this year, bringing a new design and some incredible specs. Unlike other manufacturers that have launched another flagship for the second half of the year, OPPO has no plans to do so. However, a report said it is planning a special edition of the Find X3 Pro whose alleged photo has now appeared online.

Dubbed the Find X3 Pro Photographer Edition (not the official name), a photo of the said device is already making the rounds on Weibo. As seen below, OPPO has adopted a dual-textured finish for the phone. About one-third of the back of the phone is covered in metal while the remainder has a leather finish.

This special edition is said to be a partnership between OPPO and Kodak, and it pays tribute to a classic Kodak camera according to a leak by Digital Chat Station. Save for the different finish, the rest of the specs should remain unchanged.

The Find X3 Pro has a 6.7-inch QHD+ LTPO AMOLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 888 processor and has up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB of non-expandable storage.

The cameras are one of the highlights of the phone. There are two main cameras – a 50MP f/1.8 camera and a second 50MP f/2/.2 ultrawide angle camera. Both have Omnidirectional PDAF but only the former has OIS. The other two rear cameras are a 13MP telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom and a 3MP microscopic camera with a 60x magnification. For the front-facing camera, OPPO ships the phone with a 32MP sensor for the front-facing camera.

The Find X3 Pro packs a 4500mAh battery and supports 65W fast wired charging, 30W fast wireless charging, and 10W reverse wireless charging. It has an IP68 rating, NFC, Bluetooth 5.2, stereo speakers, and an in-display fingerprint scanner.

We do not know when this special version of the Find X3 Pro will be announced as OPPO is yet to release any info regarding it. Regardless, the launch should not be far off.

In July this year, a rumor emerged from popular tipster Digital Chat Station that Realme had teamed up with an established camera brand. It was later revealed by another tipster who had claimed that Realme collaborated with the well-known photography brand Kodak. Apparently, Realme’s sister brand OPPO is also in collabo with Kodak, going by a recent rumor.

Popular tipster, Digital Chat Station has disclosed via Weibo that Oppo’s next flagship will be using two of Sony’s new IMX766 sensors. The tipster further disclosed that the Chinese tech giant was teaming up with Kodak to produce a smartphone that reflects Kodak’s classic camera design.

The camera is said to have at its heart the Sony IMX766 50MP, 1/1.5″ sensor. The camera will have an ultrawide camera with a large sensor similar to that of the Find X3 Pro. The device is also tipped to feature a 13MP telephoto lens with 2x zoom and a 3MP microscope camera just like the Find X3 Pro.

The news comes as a surprise considering that Kodak has long abandoned its camera business. The company went bankrupt in 2012, a development that saw it shift its focus to hardware and software for printing solutions.

There is no official word yet about the OPPO flagship but we expect more details to emerge in the coming days.

Remember the Kodak Ektra smartphone released late last year? It appears it is the first of other android devices Kodak has in its pipeline. The brand famous for its photography-related products has released two new tablets made in partnership with Archos.

The Kodak Tablet 7 and the Kodak Tablet 10 are made by French company Archos, whom recently announced a number of new phones. The tablets will also be sold and distributed by Archos.

Kodak Tablet 7

The Kodak Tablet 7 like the name says has a 7-inch 1024 x 600 display. It is powered by a MediaTek MT8321 quad-core processor paired with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. There is a separate microSD card slot for up to 64GB of extra storage and two mini SIM slots that support 3G networks.

The Tablet 7 has an 8MP primary camera and a 2MP front facing camera for video calls. There is Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box and a 2500mAh battery that should last up to 3.5hrs. The tablet has an audio jack and a micro USB port.

Kodak Tablet 10

The Tablet 10 is different with its bigger 10-inch 1280 x 800 display, 32GB of built-in memory, 6000mAh battery and design. Every other thing is the same as that of the Tablet 7.

Kodak bundles both tablets with Cyberlink apps that lets you edit photos and videos on the go.

The tablets will be available in June and come in black and the famous Kodak yellow. The Tablet 7 is priced at €79.99 (~$89) and the Tablet 10 will sell for €119.99 (~$134). There is no mention of availability outside Europe.

Decades ago, memories were saved using products from American photography company, Kodak. The company’s tagline ”Kodak moment” even made into common lexicon to refer to personal events like the birth of a child or weddings that needed to be recorded for future reference. The company later filed for bankruptcy protection after years of struggling in the photography business due in part to their late entry into digital photography. Now out of bankruptcy, the company has launched a smartphone called Ektra which coincides with the 75th anniversary of the Ektra brand.

The Ektra is a camera first before a phone. Sporting a 21MP f/2.0 main shooter with Kodak non-reflective coating, optical image stabilisation, 4K recording, PDAF, and HDR. The Ektra does pack a punch.

The phone’s viewfinder is even designed like a DSLR and features a bunch of familiar presets like portrait mode, smart auto, manual mode, sports, macro, landscape, and  Bokeh. Kodak says the DSLR dial even has haptic feedback. The camera’s manual mode allows the user adjust shutter speed and ISO rating. Up front, there is a 13MP shooter for selfies.

Kodak also bundles the phone with a couple of photography apps like Google’s Snapseed for editing your pictures.

Now to what makes it a phone. The Ektra is fitted with a 5” FHD display with Gorilla Glass protection, runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow, has a Helio X20 processor clocked at 2.3GHz, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage which is expandable via a micro SD card slot because you need all the space you can get to put all those awesome photos. There is a 3000mAh battery under the hood and a USB type-C port.

The phone looks well made. There is gorilla glass on the steel-rimmed lens as well and the back is covered with leather with the Kodak logo engraved on it, that curves up to the lower part of the front. It also appears to have a dedicated camera button sitting on the right side of the phone along the silver frame that runs around it.

Kodak has announced a bunch of real leather cases for the phone that are designed like old camera bags. The Ektra will be available by December starting in Europe and will sport a £450/€500/$550/3713 Yuan.

Kodak has teased a poster on its website that suggests the company would likely be launching a new smartphone on October 20. The teaser first appeared in a tweet on Twitter which was quickly taken down but it is now on the Kodak phones official website. The poster contains the expected launch date and a shot of what is likely the side view of the device. The view we were gifted reveals what is likely the round-shaped power button with the Kodak logo engraved on it. The button seem to be engraved inside the side bezels of the phone and a part of the flat display screen is visible.

The Eastman Kodak company, also known as Kodak held sway as a photography giant way before the digital era. The company came to the party very late in the ear of digital cameras thereby struggled without success to meet up with new competitors like Fujifilm and others. Since then, the company has been trying out its hands on various ventures including the manufacture of printers. Just last year, Kodak ventured into the smartphone business with the release of the Kodak IM5, a mid-ranger with a $249 price tag.

The IM5 was manufactured by Bullitt (known for making rugged CAT-branded smartphones), and came in as a mid-range device running Android 4.4 KitKat reputed as having a “custom built, intuitive user interface.” The IM5 packs a 13MP rear camera that’s aided by unique image management software which Kodak says helps users take, store, share and print photos. There’s also a 5MP camera on the front. The device also sports a 5-inch 720p display and featured an octa-core MediaTek processor, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of internal memory, and microSD card support. The Kodak IM5 further features a dedicated app store with hand-picked selection of app, in addition to access to Google Play Store.

Unfortunately, the reception in the  saturated smartphone market was a cold one for the company and its IM5 but that certainly has not deterred the photography legend and we just hope this new device holds the magic wand to give the company an in-road into the phone market. October 20 is the date but you don’t need to mark that on your calendar, as always we’ll keep you up-to-date here at Gizmochina.
