Smart wearables maker Noise has announced its plans to focus the bulk of its smartwatch production in India. The smart wearables brand says it will produce up to 90% of its smartwatches locally in India. The company also released a digital film that highlighted its journey to the top of the Indian smartwatch market.

Noise is India’s topmost smartwatch brand, with an array of products across several strata. Noise says it is the first brand to ship over 3 million Indian-made smartwatches to the global market. It says that the Made in India, Made for India drive started with its dream to revolutionize the wearable market. Noise is also the first local brand that successfully localized smartwatch production in the subcontinent.

The Noise brand film to mark this year’s Republic Day highlights the details and efforts of the company’s engineers and technicians in making the perfect Indian-centric smartwatch. Its smartwatches resonate with the demands of the Indian audience while maintaining global standards. Noise also notes the high-quality and seamless experience that proceeds from using its smartwatches in India. Noise says it is grateful to be a part of the fast-paced wearables industry at the heart of India’s local content strategy. It says it takes pride in understanding and fulfilling the core needs of its customers in an innovative manner.

As per a Bloomberg report, this decision comes after considering the cash incentives that the local phone makers get.

Will we get assembled in India phones?

The three brands in question are Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo, some of the largest Chinese smartphone makers. As per the report, these companies are in discussion with two of the well-known Indian manufacturers. Xiaomi is following up with Dixon Technologies, while Oppo and Vivo are in talks with Lava. If the plan succeeds, we expect to see phones from Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo labeled with the ‘Assembled in India‘ tag.

Reportedly, these brands want to take advantage of cash incentives available to local phone makers like Lava and Dixon. With the incentive benefits, the company may be able to offer affordable products in India. The phone prices may vary for the other markets getting these India-assembled devices.

Both Lava and Dixon technologies are said to be aimed at boosting India’s competitiveness and making the country a hub for electronics production. If all goes as planned, this process could start as early as this year.

As for now, company officials from these three brands are likely to visit the Indian factories soon.

According to a Reuters report, two officials close to the matter the move from the local government is a part of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. This drive has led to the region becoming the world’s second-largest smartphone manufacturer after China. Now, the government believes that the country needs to also seek a similar strategy to bring manufacturing sites from chip-making based firms.

As per a senior government official, “The government will give cash incentives of more than $1 billion to each company which will set up chip fabrication units. We’re assuring them that the government will be a buyer and there will also be mandates in the private market (for companies to buy locally made chips).” Although, it has yet to be decided how these cash incentives will be given out and the government has asked the industry for feedback as well, as per the second source from the government.

At the moment, governments across the globe have been subsidizing the semiconductor industry and the construction of chips making plants. This is especially important during this time when the world is facing a global shortage of semiconductors. The shortage also highlights that the reliance of various nations on Taiwanese suppliers. Notably, the official also added that the chips made locally will be designed as “trusted sources,” which will be used in various equipment ranging from security to networking.

Today, the manufacturer announced that practically all its phones and smart TVs sold in the country are made there, thanks to the Indian government’s “Made in India” initiative.

In a post shared on its official blog, Xiaomi India said it was one of the early adopters of the current Prime Minister’s “Made in India” initiative. Some of its phones were already being made in the country via its manufacturing partners – Foxconn and Flex and it has added more over the years.

Today, it announced that it is adding two more manufacturing partners to ramp up the production of its smartphones in the country. The first is DBG which has set up a plant in Haryana while the other is BYD which will be setting up a plant in Tamil Nadu. Xiaomi says the former has already increased its monthly manufacturing capacity by about 20% while BYD is also expected to make a significant contribution once it begins operations later this year.

Some of these components are said to be manufactured by companies such as Sunny India, NVT, Salcomp, LY Tech, and Sunvoda.

The tech giant has also onboarded a new TV manufacturing partner called Radiant Technology. The new partner has a plant located in Telangana and has helped Xiaomi achieve a 100% target of locally made smart TVs.

The addition of these new factories also means the company’s workforce has increased. Xiaomi says its partners provided employment for 10,000 new workers last year, thus bringing its extended workforce to a total of 60,000.

The original report stated inaccurately that Micromax was manufacturing Smart TVs for the below-mentioned brands. That report has since been rectified to reflect the correct information and accordingly, we have updated this article.

Updated Story below.

The smart TV segment is booming in India. Affordable realme and Redmi branded TVs’ popularity is an example of it. Recently, they have achieved exceptional sales during the festive season in the country. As a result, apart from other players like OnePlus, TCL, BPL, we also witnessed brands like Inifinix foray into the Smart TV segment. Now, a report by the Mobile Indian says these TVs are going to be manufactured by an Indian company, Bhagwati Products Ltd.

Citing its sources, the report says that Bhagwati Products Limited has started making TVs for realme, OnePlus, Infinix, TCL, and BPL in India. In case you don’t know, Bhagwati Products makes Mobile Phones, Smart TVs, ACs, PCBs, and more. It manufactures products for Micromax too, which recently made a come back in India.

Notably, another Indian company, Lava started manufacturing smartphones for brands like Nokia and Motorola. Anyway, this move by brands like realme, OnePlus, Infinix could be to further leverage the benefits of the ‘Make in India‘ initiative whilst providing a hand for its partner(Bhagwati) in the PLI scheme in return.

Also, if you take giants like Xiaomi, which is in the smart TV business longer than realme and OnePlus, already makes its TVs in the country by itself. That said, this new partnership could also be an extension of localized production what the spin-off brands had already planned.

Coming back, currently operating with three factories at Bhiwadi, Telangana, and Rudrapur across India, Bhagwati Products has an HQ in New Delhi since 2002. According to the report, it has so far made 40 Million Mobile Phones including Smart Phones & Feature Phones, and 3 Million LED TVs, Mobile Charger, Li-Ion Batteries, and more.

In a statement given to the media, the state of Uttar Pradesh has claimed that the company is moving its factory from China to India. This is being viewed as a move that will help boost the Make in India initiative that aims to project India as a manufacturing hub.

Samsung will be getting 7 billion rupees in financial benefits for setting up the display plant. On top of that, the state government has also confirmed that the company will get an exemption from a tax payable on the transfer of land for the factory.

The unit is expected to be operational from next year, but the exact timeline is not yet known. Once the factory starts operations, it is expected to create 510 direct jobs. It’s noteworthy that Samsung already has the world’s largest mobile phone manufacturing plant in Uttar Pradesh, India.

The development comes just months after the Indian government approved financial incentives of around $6.5 billion for 16 countries to boost domestic production of smartphones. The list of companies set to benefit from this includes Samsung, along with Apple suppliers such as Foxconn and Wistron, among others.

Many companies are now looking to India as a potential replacement for China when it comes to manufacturing. Apart from Samsung, several other companies are moving their production to India, including Apple, which is now making several of its products in India is expected to expand the same in the coming months.

This is a part of the country’s “Make in India” initiative that aims to promote domestic manufacturing.

The notification was issued by the Finance Ministry and the duty went into effect from 1st October.

Earlier, the Ministry of Electronics and IT had proposed to impose a duty of 5 percent on open cell panels and bring the pure cell to zero percent in a bid to encourage the process of polariser film and COF bonding for open-cell.

Last month, the body had written a letter to Revenue Secretary seeking an extension on zero duty on the open cell imports for three more years. It argued that the policy has given a huge fillip to domestic manufacturing of LED televisions and has also led to a reduction in imports from ASEAN countries.

It has also warned of the growth of the grey market on imposing 5 percent duty. It also claims that there will be a rise in imports of LED TVs, giving a major blow to the government’s ambitious Make In India initiative.

The Indian Smart TV market is poised to grow further as the Internet is penetrating at a faster pace and OTT consumption is growing in the market. After the company started producing iPhone 11 in India, the upcoming series could also be manufactured in the country.

As per the reports, it is being speculated that Apple could start producing “Made in India” iPhone 12 series models from mid-2021. The manufacturing is expected to take place at the new Narasapura plant in Bengaluru, which is being operated by Taiwanese company Wistron — a contract manufacturer for Apple.

It is also being reported that the company could be investing around ₹2,900 crores as it looks to hire about 10,000 employees. While a new project is already in works at this plant, the facility is expected to start manufacturing in a couple of months.

This is a different plant than the one used by Apple to assemble the iPhone 11 and iPhone XR models. Both of these phones are being manufactured by Foxconn at the plant in Chennai, which is also expected to start making iPhone SE 2020 models from this year.

If the iPhone 12 models are being manufactured in India, the pricing for the same could be lower as Apple will be able to evade a 22 percent import tax on the devices. It’s noteworthy given that the Apple iPhone pricing in India is among the highest in the world.

As for the upcoming iPhone 12 series, the official launch event has been delayed by a few weeks, as confirmed by Apple. Reports indicate that the launch could take place on 12th October, with pre-booking starting the same week and shipments of the base model beginning a week after that.

However, not all the models are expected to go on sale together. It is being reported that the iPhone 12 will be available for purchase in October itself while other models in the lineup, including the iPhone 12 Pro, will go on sale in November.

Vikas Agarwal, who is heading OnePlus’ operations in India, believes that India is fast emerging as the company’s regional headquarter for its expansion into global markets, that too within five years of the company launching operations in the country.

He has added that the company is dedicatedly working towards turning India into a global export hub for its offerings, having already commenced export of 5G devices to markets like North America. He said: “As part of the business focus in India for the coming years, OnePlus is building India as a global export hub for the brand and is already manufacturing 5G devices and exporting to overseas markets, such as North America.”

OnePlus and another Chinese smartphone brand Oppo have co-invested to setup a manufacturing facility in the State of Uttar Pradesh’s Noida to produce 5G smartphones. It’s noteworthy that both OnePlus and Oppo are owned by the same parent company — BBK Electronics.

The company’s 5G ambitions are not limited to India as OnePlus is also testing 5G capabilities for carriers in the US and Europe countries at its research and development centre in Hyderabad.

The company forayed in the Indian market in 2014 and since then the company has grown rapidly. The company’s smartphones have been attracting major customer attention and has managed to grab the leading spot in India’s premium smartphone segment, defeating Samsung and Apple.

It also launched the OnePlus TV in the Indian market, making it the world’s first market to have the company’s smart TV. The company is also set to launch its own payment service named OnePlus Pay soon.

Last month, the company said that it is planning to aggressively expand its presence offline, and develop new categories of IoT products made for India. This year, the company is ahead of its sales target for smartphones (35 percent market share) compared to last year’s 33 percent market share.

Xiaomi says the factory has a production capacity target of 100,000 smart TVs per month by Q1 2019. It will begin with the production of the Mi LED TV 4A 32” and the Mi LED TV 4A 43” and add other models next year.
