The Vivo X23 Symphony Edition might look like the regular X23 but it comes with less RAM, a less powerful processor, and a higher pixel front camera.

When Vivo announced it last year, it was available in two colors – Starry Black and Arctic Pink. Now Vivo has announced a new color variant similar to the Vivo X23 Star Edition but with less red. The name roughly translates into “Star Language New Wish” but we expect a simpler name if it will get an international release.

Like the other two variants of the Vivo X23 Symphony Edition, this is also only available in 6GB RAM + 128GB configuration. It is priced at ¥2798 (~$414) and will begin shipping on January 20. It is already available for pre-order on Vivo’s online shop.

The Vivo X23 Symphony Edition swaps out the Snapdragon 710 processor of the Vivo X23 for the Snapdragon 660. It also packs a 24.8MP selfie camera instead of a 12MP sensor like its more powerful sibling. The rest of the specs are the same.

So you get a 6.41-inch FHD+ 19.5:9 AMOLED display with a water-drop notch, dual 12MP + 13MP rear cameras, a 3500mAh battery, Android 8.1, and 128GB of storage. There is also IR face unlock and an under-display fingerprint scanner.

It has many flagship-class features but it is not completely flagship, and this makes its price to be more affordable than the main flagships from the most known brands. Here, we will compare it with the other affordable high-end phones from China released by Oppo’s sister companies Vivo and OnePlus. We are talking about OnePlus 6T and Vivo X23: is the new Oppo R17 Pro (also known as Oppo RX17 Pro in the European market) at their levels in terms of value for money? Here you will find the answer.

Design

With its huge 86.3 percent screen-to-body ratio, the smallest waterdrop notch, and the thinnest body, Vivo X23 is not only the most beautiful device in this trio but also one of the most beautiful phones released in 2018. It rocks a glass back and an aluminum frame and it is also available in gradient color variants. But OnePlus 6T and Oppo R17 Pro are still among the best phones as well when it comes to aesthetics.

Display

The displays of these devices look almost identical, but the one of the OnePlus 6T boasts a better color reproduction thanks to its great DCI-P3 coverage. Further, note that OnePlus 6T and Oppo R17 Pro are protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 6 that is the strongest protection existing for a smartphone’s glass. Vivo X23 lacks the Gorilla Glass 6 protection but it has a higher screen-to-body ratio and, as said above, a less invasive notch.

Hardware/Software

OnePlus 6T is definitely superior to both Oppo R17 Pro and Vivo X23 in terms of hardware and performance because it is equipped with the best chipset in the market: the octa-core Snapdragon 845 by Qualcomm running at a max frequency of 2.8 GHz. Further, it has a very optimized Android fork called Oxygen OS and it comes with Android Pie out of the box. Oppo R17 Pro takes the second place with its Snapdragon 710 and Color OS, while Vivo X23 has a slightly less powerful Snapdragon 670.

Camera

Oppo R17 Pro wins the camera comparison. It has a triple rear camera with variable focal apertures in order to adapt to every light condition, as well as OIS and a 3D stereo camera to capture depth information. Even its front camera is better than the ones of its opponents with a higher 25 MP resolution and an ultrawide lens.

Battery

OnePlus 6T and Oppo R17 Pro both have a 3700 mAh battery, but OnePlus 6T lasts slightly more and it is optimized better, probably thanks to Android Pie. It is able to arrive at the end of the working day with 30-35 percent of remaining charge, while Oppo R17 Pro has just 25 percent. Vivo X23 has a smaller 3400 mAh unit which is more than sufficient but far from achieving OnePlus 6T and Oppo R17 Pro’s results.

Price

Oppo R17 Pro and OnePlus 6T are available globally with starting price tags of €599 and €569, while Vivo X23 is only available in Asia and it costs about €500 there. Due to its smaller battery and its less powerful SoC I wouldn’t actually choose the Vivo X23, but, even though it has not a Snapdragon 845 (SD710 is enough for every scenario), I would personally pick the Oppo R17 Pro because of its better camera department and the micro SD slot.

While the X23 smartphone will be launching in China, the V11 and V11 Pro will be announced in India. Compared to predecessor X21 and V9 smartphones, their upcoming successors will be featuring displays with smaller notch. Fresh photos of the Vivo X23 have surfaced to reveal its front and rear appearance. In one of the photos, the front design of the Vivo X23 is compared with OPPO R17 to show the display notch difference.

Vivo has claimed that the Vivo X23 will be offering 91 percent screen-to-body ratio and this is quite evident in the above photos. The reflective glass rear gives a premium appeal. The company has already confirmed that it will be arriving in color gradient options Magic Night Black, Phantom Purple and Phantom Purple. The handset shown is the black version of the phone.

The above photo that compares the front design of both phones shows that the OPPO R17 placed on the left has a drop-like notch whereas the notch on X23 appears round. The below image shows the differences in the positioning of the rear dual cameras on both phones. The X23 and R17 lack rear mounted fingerprint scanner as these devices are equipped with under-display fingerprint scanner.

From what has been shown on the official site, the handset will be released in at least three color variants: Phantom Purple, Magic Night and Phantom Red. The first is a gradient hue going from fuchsia to purple, the second is a blue hue and the third is a bright red color variant. Vivo X23 comes with an almost full borderless display with a waterdrop notch which only contains the front camera.

In detail, it will have a screen-to-body ratio superior to 90 percent (91.2 percent according to the website). Given that there is no space for a physical Home key like most of the actual bezel-less phones, the fingerprint reader will be embedded in the display like the previous models from the X-series. Alongside the bezel-less screen, the design of the handset is composed of a glass back and an aluminum frame. Besides the design and the three color variants, the official Vivo store also reveals the main specifications. In one of the images published on the official site, we can clearly see the presence of a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

The power key and the volume rocker are placed on the right side and there is also an additional key on the left side. On the top right corner of the rear camera, there are dual cameras in a vertical configuration with a LED flash under it. From what the latest leaks suggested, the camera should have resolutions of 12 and 5 MP and it should also be supported by AI. The display is expected to come with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and a Full HD+ 1080p resolution. Under the hood, there should be a Snapdragon 670 SoC with up to 8 GB RAM and 128 GB ROM. Official renders, leaked photos and specifications of the smartphone have also surfaced in the past few days. Today, Vivo has confirmed that it will be holding a launch event at 7:30 PM on Sept. 6 in Beijing, China to unveil the Vivo X23 smartphone.

The Vivo X23 that will be arriving as the successor of the Vivo X21 will be equipped with a waterdrop AMOLED screen of 6.4 inches. The official page of the phone has revealed that it offers a screen-to-body ratio of 91.2 percent. The handset will be featuring fourth-generation under-display fingerprint scanner.

Recently, a Vivo phone with a model number of V1809A that is believed to be the Vivo X23 phone was spotted on Geekbench with Snapdragon 710. The very same model has also surfaced on Master Lu benchmarks with Snapdragon 670 SoC. Hence, it is advisable to wait for official confirmation from Vivo to confirm on its SoC. There is a possibility that the Vivo X23 may come in two variants like the Vivo X21. One variant of the X23 may feature an in-display fingerprint scanner and advanced whereas the X23 model with regular fingerprint scanner may come with slightly lower specs.

The Chinese benchmarking platform has confirmed that the waterdrop screen of the X23 will be producing Full HD+ resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels. It means it will offer an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The Chinese manufacturer has confirmed that the Vivo X23 is equipped with 8 GB of RAM. It features an internal storage of 128 GB.

The other specifications of the Vivo X23 smartphone are yet to be confirmed. The handset is already available for reservations through the official online Vivo store in China. Also, the rumor mill is yet to reveal the pricing of the phone.

Ahead of the release which is still pretty much unknown, Vivo has released two video ads for the device and a couple of promotional images.

The video ads do nothing more than confirming the design of the phone. The first one shows the phone in Phantom Violet with a color gradient finish and dual rear cameras. Unfortunately, it only shows the back of the phone.

The second video shows the Vivo X23 in both Phantom Violet and Magic Night Blue. Apart from the rear design as revealed by the first video, this one shows the front and confirms it has a water-drop notch and an in-display fingerprint scanner.

The latest teaser which is quite revealing is that the smartphone will be equipped with an 8GB RAM variant. The 8GB RAM variant will have a huge 128GB of internal storage.

The 8GB RAM variant is gradually becoming a trend, especially among flagship models, but we have also seen it on some mid-range phones. The 8GB DDR4LX flash memory is just enough to meet the needs of users including heavy gamers. The Vivo X23 is expected to succeed the X21 which was launched earlier this year and so, is positioned as a premium mid-ranger. The device is expected to be different from its predecessor in many aspects, including the screen which has been spotted with a valley-style notch and with a screen ratio of up to 91.2%. The device is also expected to come with the on-screen fingerprint technology. A recent teaser by Vivo revealed the presence of a Red/violet gradient colour scheme on one of the models. This is in addition to the Blu/Violet (Blue/Black) hue which had earlier been revealed via teaser poster.

In other aspects, the Vivo X23 is expected to pack a 6.4-inch AMOLED screen. The handset may either feature Snapdragon 670 or Snapdragon 710 SoC along with the 8 GB of RAM which is now confirmed. We expect other memory versions to be launched as well. In addition, the X23 is also expected to carry support for 3D facial scanning through TOF 3D depth camera technology. The handset is also expected to support 22.5W fast charging through USB-C. No word yet on its launch date but reservation for the device has reportedly commenced on Vivo’s China website meaning its launch is imminent.

Now more images have surfaced and they provide a closer and you can even say a clearer look.

In one of the images, we see the front of the Vivo X23 and it clearly shows it has a water-drop or valley-style notch. There are still bezels around but the big change is that the notch is much smaller.

A second image shows the rear of the phone. There are dual cameras arranged vertically and positioned at the left corner. Right underneath is an LED flash. There is also Vivo‘s branding on the glass back. There is no fingerprint scanner which means this will come with an in-display fingerprint sensor like the Vivo X21 UD. The third image is also of the rear but gives us a clearer look at the phone’s blue color and its light pattern design.

The Vivo X23 has been reported to have a 6.4-inch screen, a Snapdragon 670 processor, and up to 8GB of RAM. It will also have Vivo’s TOF 3D sensing technology which is reported to be superior to Apple’s Face ID technology and takes up less space. Knowing Vivo, we won’t be surprised if that feature is exclusive to a particular model of the X23.

The Vivo X23 is scheduled to launch on August 20.

It had also revealed that the smartphone would be launching on Aug. 20, which seems to too early since the rumor mill has revealed very less information on the Vivo X23. However, the arrival of the smartphone may not be far away. A tipster from China has shared the key specifications of the Vivo X23. The leak reveals that 6.4-inch notched display and 3D facial recognition will be the best features of the smartphone.

According to the leakster, the Vivo X23 will be featuring a 6.4-inch display. The translated text describes it as “beauty tip full screen”. Probably, it could be featuring a waterdrop notch like the OPPO F9 and OPPO R17 smartphones. This is possible as Vivo and OPPO are sibling brands. The leak further reveals that the X23 will be equipped with an upgraded version of in-display fingerprint scanner.

The Snapdragon 670 SoC is present under the hood of the Vivo X23 and it is assisted by 8 GB of RAM. The handset will be also featuring 3D facial recognition that will carry support for making payments through face scan. The X23 will have an independent audio DAC.

Around two months ago, Vivo had introduced TOF depth 3D camera technology. It is likely that the X23 may come equipped with the same technology for 3D face scanning. Since the overall size of the TOF depth camera is small, smartphones featuring it do not require a notch. Moreover, it can work accurately in dim light conditions. Also, the leaked images of the Vivo X23 that appeared yesterday revealed that it will be equipped with a valley-style notch (waterdrop notch).

Rumors have it that Vivo could become the first smartphone manufacturer to ch a phone with 10 GB of RAM. It is speculated that the Vivo X23 may also come in 10 GB RAM option as a leakster had recently claimed that it could be equipped with 6 GB and 4 GB of RAM through dual channel technology. It is scheduled for an August 23 release and there are rumors it will be the first phone with 10GB of RAM. Ahead of its release, live photos of the device have been posted on the web, revealing the front design.

The photos which were shared online by a Weibo user shows an individual using the phone in public. Although one can only see the front of the phone which has a case and a protective glass on, a close-up image shows the phone comes with the new valley-style notch.

[envira-gallery id=”206311″]

It appears the valley-notch or waterdrop screen will be the trend for the second half of the year. OPPO already kickstarted the trend with the OPPO F9 and F9 Pro and we have seen an upcoming Honor phone with the same design. The OPPO R17 also has the same-styled notch. We are sure there will be more devices with the same design. Trust Chinese manufacturers to milk a design.

There doesn’t really appear to be a difference in the size of the lower bezel, but the smaller notch should mean a slight increase in the screen-to-body ratio.

The conversation reveals that the Vivo will be debuting the Vivo X23 smartphone on Aug. 20.

In the below image, the Chinese tipster has asked two questions to Jovi. The first one is whether it knows anything about the new Vivo products. Jovi replied to it by saying that whether he was asking about Vivo X23. The tech blogger then asked about the release date of Vivo X23 and Jovi answered by saying. “8.20 will happen big.”

Even though Vivo has not released any information about the upcoming Vivo X23, its Jovi assistant has spilled the beans on it by not only confirming on its existence but also revealing its release date. It seems that the company could be skipping the X22 moniker for its next X series phone as it now seems to be working on the launch of X23.

Vivo’s sibling brand OPPO has already announced the OPPO R17 smartphone. Hence, there is a high possibility that the announcement of the Vivo X23 may not be far away.

As of this writing, the specifications of the Vivo X23 phone are under the wraps. The phone may sport a design similar to R17 which means it may come with a water drop notched display. Another reliable leakster has supported this claim by sharing a leaked image. The image seems to show two Vivo X23 handsets stacked on top of each other. According to him, the Vivo X23 will be arriving in two models featuring Snapdragon 670 and Snapdragon 710.
