iOS 17.4 Released With Sideloading In The EU And Other Changes For All Users

Apple is now seeding the iOS 17.4 to compatible iPhones. Alongside the Cupertino-based tech giant is also rolling out the iPadOS 17.4 to eligible tablets. The latest software version brings a plethora of new changes and features. It also addresses the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) going into effect soon. However, these changes are only applicable for users in the EU region.

iOS 17.4 now rolling out with a host of changes

Apple iOS 17

Beginning with the changes for the users of the European Union, iOS 17.4 now allows installing apps from alternative marketplaces. Users will also be able to install another browser with alternative browser engines. Once the update is installed, users will get the option to select the default web browser of their choice. Additionally, NFC is now compatible with other wallet and banking apps. It is not limited exclusively to Apple Pay.

Now, coming to the non-EU-specific changes, iOS 17.4 brings automatic podcast transcriptions in English, Spanish, French, and German. It displays the full text of each episode that highlights in sync with the audio. This is quite useful for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Reports indicate end of the line for Nvidia’s GTX GPUs after nearly two decades

Nvidia seems to be gradually phasing out its long-standing GTX line of graphics cards, as per reports from Board Channel sources. It’s said that the company has stopped producing the GTX 16-series, which are the final GPUs based on the Turing architecture.

nvidia gtx gpu discontinue

Although Nvidia hasn’t officially confirmed this discontinuation, reports suggest that the remaining GTX 16-series GPUs have been given to its partners (AIBs). Once the current stock, comprising the GTX 1630 and GTX 1650 models, runs out, the GTX line will effectively come to an end.

If these rumors turn out to be true, gamers on a budget will have to explore alternatives, likely from AMD and Intel. Nvidia’s current entry-level option in the RTX series is the RTX 3050 6GB.

The Legacy of GTX

The GTX brand made its debut in 2005 with the GeForce 7800 GTX, becoming synonymous with Nvidia’s top-tier GPUs for a decade.

In 2018, the RTX 20-series was introduced, focusing on ray tracing and AI capabilities. However, rather than overlooking the popularity of the GTX line, the company launched the GTX 16-series in 2019. This new lineup offered a more budget-friendly option based on the Turing architecture, albeit without the RTX features.

Although Nvidia didn’t release a GTX equivalent within the Ampere (RTX 30-series) generation, the GTX 16 series remained a budget-friendly choice for several years.

Nvidia’s focus on ray tracing and AI technologies implies that the GTX brand is unlikely to make a comeback. The conclusion of the GTX 16-series marks the end of an era in the company’s history, with the RTX line now representing its entire consumer GPU range.

Honor 90, X9b gets February 2024 security patch update in India; Android 14 still pending

Honor has started releasing the February 2024 security patch to its Honor 90 and X9b smartphones in India. Madhav Seth, CEO of HTech, announced this update via a tweet on X/Twitter.

In the post, Seth also included a screenshot showing the details of the update, including the firmware version (7.1.0.229) and size (162MB). However, he didn’t specify which device the update was intended for.

Nonetheless, as a security patch, the update should be small for both devices. And don’t expect it to include any major UI changes or new features.

Although the update is unlikely to delete user data, it’s advisable to back up your data as a precautionary measure before proceeding with the update. To update your Honor smartphone, you can head to Settings > System and Updates > Software Update > Check for Updates

It’s worth noting that both the Honor 90 and Honor X9b originally came with Android 13, and Honor has yet to release the Android 14 update for these models.

Honor 90 Honor X9b February update
Honor 90

In contrast, Samsung, even with its large portfolio of smartphones, has already rolled out the Android 14 update to most of its eligible devices.

While there is no official date for the Android 14 rollout for Honor devices, Seth mentioned in an interview with The Mobile Indian that the Honor 90 and Honor X9b are expected to receive the Android 14-based Magic OS 8.0 update sometime in the second quarter of 2024.

That means these Honor devices still won’t get the major OS update even this month, in March. Android 15 Developer Preview is already out and Honor has yet to release Android 14 for a couple of its phones in India. It’s definitely not a good thing!

We hope Honor takes this into account and will work to provide faster OS updates for its smartphones.

Huawei reaches patent licensing agreements with Amazon and Vivo

Huawei Technologies, the Chinese telecommunications giant, and Amazon have reached a new patent licensing agreement.

The multi-year deal with the U.S. tech company covers pending litigation involving Huawei’s patented wifi and video playback technologies. However, specific terms of the agreement, for obvious reasons, were not disclosed by any of the companies.

Huawei Patent agreements Amazon Vivo

Alan Fan, who heads Huawei’s intellectual property rights department, however, said that “American and Chinese companies and companies from other regions are cooperating without limitations in standards and patent licensing,” even amidst existing geopolitical tensions.

As is widely known, Huawei is facing restrictions within the U.S. market due to data security concerns, and ongoing measures prevent U.S. firms from supplying Huawei with vital components. These restrictions have had a significant negative impact on Huawei’s smartphone business.

Nevertheless, Huawei is striving to regain its pre-ban status. The Mate 60 series smartphones marked a hopeful turning point as the company’s first 5G-supported models in years.

Subsequently, Huawei released the Nova 12 series smartphones featuring 5G capabilities and introduced a laptop equipped with an in-house chipset.

Regardless, in addition to the Amazon agreement, Huawei has also entered a cross-licensing patent agreement with Vivo, a domestic smartphone maker. The agreement specifically focuses on cellular standards essential patents, including those for 5G.

As of December 31, 2023, Vivo has patent applications in more than 70 countries and regions, possessing a robust patent portfolio of 25,000 families.

Among these, over 6,000 families pertain to essential patents for the 5G standard, with over 2,500 families declared to ETSI and approximately 13,500 standard document submissions to 3GPP.

To note, Huawei holds similar licensing arrangements with fellow Chinese smartphone companies Xiaomi and Oppo.

Microsoft could launch Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 on March 21: Report

Microsoft‘s upcoming Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 are getting a big upgrade in their displays and are set to launch this month. The information comes from a report by Windows Central, which revealed that both devices will switch to OLED panels and could possibly launch on March 21st.

Microsoft’s upcoming Surface devices will have OLED display

OLED screens are becoming more pervasive in the premium laptop market as they deliver deeper blacks, vibrant colors, and superior contrast. Microsoft is among the few manufacturers that have not yet adopted OLED technology for its laptops.

However, that seems to be changing with the upcoming Surface laptops. And thanks to the introduction of OLED panels, both new Surface models are also expected to support HDR content.

Additionally, the report says both the Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 will reportedly be available in both Intel- and Qualcomm-powered versions.

The Intel models are likely to feature the newest Intel Core Ultra processors, with an emphasis on AI capabilities, launching in April. Meanwhile, the Arm-based versions will likely utilize the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite chip, with an expected release window in June.

Visually, the Surface Pro 10 is said to largely retain the design of the Surface Pro 9, with some notable additions. This includes an upgraded wide-angle webcam featuring Studio Effects and an integrated NFX reader.

Microsoft Surface Pro 9 Laptop 6 Launch

The Surface Laptop 6 is rumored to receive a more substantial redesign with smaller display bezels and rounded corners, taking inspiration from the existing Surface Laptop Studio line.

It’s also expected to feature a new haptic touchpad and expanded port selection, including two USB-C connections, a USB Type-A port, Surface Connect, and a dedicated Copilot key integrated into the keyboard.

Windows “AI Explorer”

Besides the upgrades coming to Surface laptops, the report also mentions a new feature coming with the 2024 Windows 11 update called “AI Explorer.”

It’s said to be an enhanced version of Copilot and will create a timeline of user activity on the computer. AI Explorer’s goal is to make every computer interaction searchable using natural language. It’s intended to understand even vague requests and could prove to be a valuable tool for users.

AI Explorer will also offer contextual assistance. For instance, when viewing an image, it may suggest an option to edit that photo. Users could then issue simple commands for specific edits, such as removing a background.

Upcoming devices like the Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 will likely be the first ones to take benefit of this feature.

Microsoft ends support for Android apps on Windows 11

In a surprising move, Microsoft has announced that it will stop supporting Android apps in Windows 11 starting March 5th, 2025. Specifically, support for Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) is going away which has been pivotal for running Android apps on Windows 11.

Microsoft Windows 11 Android apps

Initially introduced in 2021, WSA allowed users to easily load Android apps or get them from the Amazon App Store. The feature gained popularity swiftly, but its future now seems uncertain.

Microsoft’s decision to discontinue WSA support came to light through an update in developer documentation. The change unsurprisingly affects the Amazon Appstore on Windows as well as any applications or games dependent on WSA.

Microsoft’s announcement to end Android support means starting from March 5th, 2024, users won’t be able to install new Android apps via the Amazon Appstore on Windows 11.

However, those who already have apps installed can continue using them until March 5th, 2025, with updates also available until then. What will happen after that date is unclear as of now. The apps might stop working altogether or might just lose official support.

Amazon has also confirmed the end of support stating that developers won’t be able to submit new apps targeted for Windows 11 after March 5th, 2024. Developers with existing apps can submit updates until the Amazon Appstore on Windows 11 shuts down.

Microsoft’s decision leaves the fate of Android apps on Windows 11 uncertain. While the company hasn’t provided official reasons for ending WSA support, it could be due to the low adoption of the service or may be due to technical challenges.

For users interested in running Android apps on Windows, you might want to get back to the basics now. That is, using third-party Android emulators.

This translates to approximately a 21% single-core and an 18% multi-core performance increase compared to the M2 MacBook Air.

The key enhancement in the M3 generation lies in its GPU, although this aspect isn’t tested by Geekbench. Moreover, both the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro now feature the M3 chip. But the Pro’s active cooling system will likely allow it to sustain higher performance levels for longer durations.

The MacBook Pro also offers advantages like a superior display, longer battery life, and more ports. So if you are looking for a machine to handle tasks like 3D rendering and video editing extensively, the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M3 could be a battery buy.

The Apple M3 chip, announced last year, features an 8-core CPU and a GPU with up to 10 cores. Notably, it’s the first Apple chip to include hardware-accelerated ray-tracing graphics.

The updated MacBook Air models start at $1,099 in the US and will begin shipping on March 8th. The older M1 MacBook Air has been discontinued, while the M2 version remains available at a reduced price.

POCO to launch the most affordable 5G phone ever in India soon: Exec

POCO is apparently working on a new budget smartphone model for the Indian market. But this isn’t just any phone with a light price tag, the company’s India head has hinted that this device will arrive as the most affordable 5G smartphone ever in the region.

The news arrives from Himanshu Tandon, who is the head of POCO’s Indian arm. He recently shared a teaser that confirmed the “POCO X Airtel” partnership, which is coming soon. when another user on X (formerly Twitter) asked whether this is a new POCO Neo series or F6 series device, Tandon replied that it is not an Airtel version of an existing model. Rather, he stated that it will be the most affordable 5G phone to launch in India.

To recall, the Chinese brand had previously relaunched the POCO C51 model in a partnership with Airtel. This collaboration brought exclusive Airtel benefits, like special affordable plans for those that buy that model. But since this isn’t a simple rerelease, we have no idea which smartphone will carry the crown for the most affordable 5G phone.

Unfortunately, this is all the information we have at the moment. This new POCO device will likely be teased or spotted in leaks ahead of its release, so stay tuned for more as we will be providing updates when additional information is available regarding this matter.
