Canalys: Huawei returns to top five in China’s smartphone market as shipments rise by 47%

Canalys recently shared the latest figures for China’s mobile phone market for the last quarter of 2023. The report shows that the decrease in China’s mobile phone market has slowed down in the fourth quarter. During this period, smartphone shipments totaled 73.9 million units, which is just 1% lower than the same time the previous year.

The top five brands in terms of sales were Apple, Honor, Vivo, Huawei, and Xiaomi. Notably, Huawei saw a significant 47% increase in shipments compared to last year, putting them back in the top five at the fourth position.

Breaking it down, Apple led the pack with 17.5 million units shipped in the fourth quarter, a 6% increase from last year.

Huawei, with its 47% increase in shipments, shipped 10.4 million units securing fourth place. According to Lucas Zhong, a Canalys research analyst, Huawei’s comeback is largely due to the “Mate 60 Pro which uses self-developed Kirin chips and innovative features like satellite calling.” Xiaomi rounded out the top five with 9.5 million units shipped.

Meanwhile, for the entire year of 2023, smartphone shipments in China fell by 5% to 273 million units. Apple achieved a milestone by topping the annual shipment chart in mainland China for the first time, with a slight 1% increase in shipments and a market share that grew to 19%.

Vivo, Oppo, and Honor each held a stable market share of 16%, with respective annual shipments of 44.5 million, 43.9 million, and 43.6 million units.

Xiaomi maintained its fifth position in the market with a 13% share. Huawei, coming in sixth, saw a significant rise, with its market share jumping from 8% in 2022 to 12% in 2023, and a 48% increase in shipments.

Apple allows alternate app stores on iOS, but EU developers face complicated fee structure

Starting in March this year with the release of iOS 17.4, Apple will allow third-party app stores on iOS for the first time. It will also allow developers to opt out of Apple’s in-app payment system. This means that iPhone users won’t be limited to getting apps solely from the Apple App Store, marking a major shift in how apps are distributed on iPhones. Apple has made such a significant change in response to the Digital Markets Act (DMA) in the European Union.

Apple confirms new fee structure for EU developers

Apple App Store
Apple App Store

Before the implementation of DMA, Apple charged a 30 percent commission rate for most App Store purchases, like app downloads and in-app items. However, smaller developers earning less than $1 million yearly were allowed to pay just 15 percent.

In the EU, Apple is changing the fees for iOS apps. Developers can now choose between a 17 percent commission (plus 3 percent if using Apple’s payment system) or a 10 percent commission (plus 3 percent) for small businesses, a significant cut from the previous 30 percent.

In addition, there is something called the Core Technology Fee (CTF) of €0.50 per annual install for high-volume apps (over one million installs per year). The CTF is charged per customer account for the first install within a year. Most developers won’t pay this fee, as it applies to a small percentage of apps.

Developers can now distribute apps outside the App Store, but the CTF still applies if they reach the volume threshold, regardless of the marketplace. The monopoly on in-app purchases is no longer there, with a 3 percent fee if developers choose to use it. Alternative app marketplaces must also pay the CTF for downloads. In addition, Apple will also have a stand on which app stores can be made available on its App Store.

Nikita Bier, co-founder of social-media start-ups Gas and tbh, said if a developer makes $10 million in sales, Apple’s cut under the new structure would be $6.2 million annually. After accounting for assumed expenses and taxes, the developer’s take-home amount would be $2 million, which is only 20% of their sales.

Bier highlighted that for many apps, especially those making less than $0.57 per user, the new fee structure may result in negative earnings, meaning the developer would owe money to Apple rather than making a profit. This has led Bier to state that, given these conditions, they would refrain from launching an app in Europe.

Edifier HECATE G100 launch

Edifier HECATE G100 specifications

The speaker features what Edifier is calling a “cyber style” aesthetics including angular lines and RGB lighting that pulsates in sync with the music. Its defining characteristic, however, is the built-in magnet on the bottom.

This allows users to attach the G100 to any magnetic surface, such as bicycle handlebars, lampposts, or even refrigerators, for convenient hands-free audio playback.

In terms of sound quality, the G100 utilizes a 40mm driver and delivers 3W of output power. Likewise, the frequency response ranges from 200Hz to 15kHz. While not a sound system replacement, it offers sufficient volume and clarity for personal listening or small gatherings.

For connectivity, the Edifier HECATE G100 utilizes Bluetooth 5.3 with  Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) and Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) as its supporting protocol.

The A2DP enables audio streaming from an audio source, whereas the AVRCP facilitates over-the-air control of the audio stream. This should ensure a stable connection with minimal lag, enhancing the listening experience.

Battery life is rated at up to 6 hours on a single charge, thanks to the 500mAh battery. Additionally, the G100 can be used while plugged in, offering uninterrupted playback for extended periods.

Pricing and Availability

The Edifier HECATE G100 is available now for 99 yuan (approximately $15 USD). For users seeking a portable and affordable Bluetooth speaker with a unique magnetic feature, the G100 may be worth considering.

MSI acknowledges issues with RTX 4070 Ti SUPER graphics card BIOS, fixes with update

MSI has publicly addressed a problem with the initial BIOS of its RTX 4070 Ti SUPER 16G VENTUS 3X graphics card and issued a formal apology to users. The acknowledgment follows feedback from various overseas media outlets, revealing that the MSI RTX 4070 Ti SUPER 16G VENTUS 3X media cards provided for review had performance issues. NVIDIA officially notified less than two days before the scheduled review release that the graphics card exhibited lower-than-expected performance, with a reported 5% deficit.

MSI has already provided an update with a fix

It was reported that under the original BIOS version 95.03.45.40.58, the MSI RTX 4070 Ti SUPER 16G VENTUS 3X showed negligible performance improvement compared to the RTX 4070 Ti. Despite MSI’s initial BIOS update (version 95.03.45.40.DC), NVIDIA stated that the graphics card’s performance was still “3% lower than expected figures.”

In response, MSI swiftly released another BIOS update, version 95.03.45.40.F0, aiming to bring the card’s performance in line with its competitors. However, concerns were raised about the timing of the second update. Some media outlets, such as KitGuru, reportedly received the update only two hours before the review embargo was lifted, preventing them from incorporating the new data into their evaluations.

MSI has since issued an official statement acknowledging that the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER 16G VENTUS 3X graphics card “cannot fully realize its potential.” The company expressed sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused and promptly released new BIOS updates for all RTX 4070 Ti SUPER graphics cards, addressing the performance issues.

While the listing doesn’t reveal the official names, we can make an educated guess based on previous models. The M14 and F14 used model numbers SM-M146B and SM-E146B, and following the pattern, the M15 and F15 likely have model numbers SM-M156B and SM-E156B, respectively.

More details are expected to surface soon, as these phones have yet to be certified anywhere else. However, rumors suggest the M15 might pack a hefty 6000mAh battery with 25W fast charging.

As per reports, the Realme GT Neo 6 could be the most affordable Snapdragon 8 Gen 2-powered smartphone in the Chinese market.
