The PelicanTrain isn’t your Standard E-Bike – It can Haul up to 500 Kilograms!

In today’s world, online shopping has become the norm for some of the craziest products being built out there – let’s be honest. It’s just fitting that the PelicanTrain E-Bike was unveiled at such a time when the world was least expecting an urban cargo transport vehicle. Developed by the innovative French startup Pelican, this electric cargo bike may just end up setting a trend in how goods are moved within cities.

You can attach multiple trailers to the bike

The PelicanTrain isn’t just an e-bike; it’s a modular marvel capable of hauling up to 1,100 pounds. This means everything from household furniture to your latest online shopping finds can be transported easily and eco-friendly. Its ability to attach multiple trailers transforms it into a road-friendly version of a train, hence its name.

Pelican E-Bike

But why is this important? Think about the last time you ordered something online. The journey of that item from the warehouse to your doorstep is usually made by vans or trucks, contributing significantly to urban pollution. The PelicanTrain, with its impressive cargo capacity, offers a cleaner alternative. It’s especially relevant as more cities seek to reduce carbon emissions, particularly in last-mile delivery services.

Beyond its environmental benefits, the PelicanTrain is a testament to smart engineering. Each trailer is equipped with electric motors that synchronize for smooth operation, ensuring safe and efficient transport of goods. This bike, along with its trailers, complies with the EU’s e-bike performance regulations, balancing power and safety.

Pelican Cycles, the brains behind this innovation, offer flexible buying options – from renting to purchasing. This accessibility is crucial for small business owners and even individuals who require heavy lifting within the city limits.

DeepMind’s AI achieves the Impossible: Predicts 2 Million new material that humans could never fathom

In a groundbreaking achievement, Google DeepMind, a subsidiary of Alphabet (GOOGL), has harnessed the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to predict the structures of over 2 million new materials. This milestone, published in the prestigious science journal Nature, holds the potential to reshape various industries by significantly improving the production of batteries, solar panels, and computer chips.

Traditionally, the discovery and synthesis of new materials have been both costly and time-consuming, often spanning a decade or more. However, DeepMind’s innovative AI, trained on data from the Materials Project, an international research group founded in 2011, has managed to predict the structure of nearly 400,000 hypothetical material designs. This breakthrough is expected to shorten the typically lengthy 10 to 20-year timeline for material development.

The GNoME Deep Learning Tool, a crucial component of DeepMind’s arsenal, identified an astounding 2.2 million new inorganic crystals, with 380,000 identified as the most stable for experimental research. This predictive accuracy extends to the stability of crystal structures, exemplified by the discovery of 52,000 new layered compounds similar to graphene and 528 potential lithium-ion conductors, a remarkable 25 times more than previous studies.

To facilitate further advancements, DeepMind is taking a collaborative approach by sharing its vast dataset with the research community through the Next Gen Materials Project. The data encompasses all of GNoME’s discoveries and predictions, providing researchers with free access to explore and experiment with the newfound treasure trove of material structures.

A significant leap towards efficient material synthesis has been made possible through DeepMind’s collaboration with the Berkeley Lab, resulting in the creation of a robotic laboratory. This autonomous lab successfully synthesized 41 of the newly discovered materials, demonstrating the transformative potential of AI in experimental synthesis.

Ekin Dogus Cubuk, a research scientist at DeepMind, expressed hope for substantial improvements in experimentation, autonomous synthesis, and machine learning models. The shared optimism extends to Kristin Persson, director of the Materials Project, who emphasized the need to shrink timelines for material development. Despite industry tendencies to be cautious about cost increases, the collaborative breakthroughs driven by AI may reshape dynamics, potentially reducing the time it takes for new materials to become cost-effective.

The convergence of AI and material science showcased by DeepMind’s achievement represents a radical acceleration in technological development. The impact on industries such as energy storage, electronics, and beyond is poised to unlock untold paths of innovation.

Li Auto and Xpeng Lead November Surge in China’s Luxury EV Market

November marked a milestone for China‘s electric vehicle (EV) industry, particularly for luxury EV manufacturers Li Auto and Xpeng. Both companies not only surpassed their previous sales records but also set a new benchmark in the growing Chinese EV market.

Li Auto delivered over 41,000 cars in November alone

Li Auto, now a member of the Hang Seng Index, reported the delivery of 41,030 units in November, slightly edging past its October record. This achievement is a testament to the company’s consistent growth, marking its eighth consecutive month of record-breaking sales. The Beijing-based manufacturer has been riding high on the success of its luxury sport utility vehicles (SUVs), such as the L7, L8, and L9, all priced above 300,000 yuan. This pricing strategy positions Li Auto as a formidable competitor to Tesla, especially considering the strong demand for its new models.

Li auto

On the other hand, Guangzhou-based Xpeng also showed impressive growth, delivering 20,041 vehicles in November. This number is marginally higher than its October figures, indicating steady progress. A significant contributor to Xpeng’s success is its new G6 SUV, which accounted for nearly half of its November deliveries.

However, the landscape of the Chinese EV market is not just about sales numbers. It’s also about the shifting preferences of Chinese consumers, particularly the middle class, who increasingly view battery-powered vehicles as the future of mobility. This shift is reflected in the growing market demand that both Li Auto and Xpeng are keen to capitalize on.

Interestingly, while Tesla remains a significant player in the Chinese market, it does not report monthly deliveries. However, CPCA data revealed a month-on-month decline in Tesla’s deliveries in October, a contrast to the Chinese manufacturers’ upward trajectory.

The Chinese EV market is also witnessing the entrance of new competitors, including tech giants like Xiaomi and Baidu, whose intelligent vehicles are starting to attract wealthy motorists. Additionally, Huawei‘s automotive venture, Aito, recorded a significant increase in November deliveries, emphasizing the increasing competition in the sector.

Navigating Troubles: The Hubble Telescope’s Technical Struggles with Gyroscopes and Safe Mode

NASA reported that the Hubble Space Telescope went into a safe mode on November 23rd due to an ongoing issue with its gyroscopes. The space agency is actively working to restart the telescope’s scientific operations. Despite this problem, the instruments of the Hubble remain steady, and it’s in good condition. Here are the details…

What Happen to the Hubble Telescope?

Launched in 1990, the Hubble has been exploring the universe for more than 33 years, playing a crucial role in enhancing our knowledge of space and supporting various space-related studies. According to NASA, the telescope entered safe mode automatically because one of its three gyroscopes provided inaccurate measurements. Gyroscopes are used to gauge the telescope’s rotation speed and position. During safe mode, scientific activities are paused while the telescope waits for new instructions from Earth.

NASA

Initially, the Hubble shifted to safe mode on November 19th. Although NASA’s team managed to restore operations the following day, an unstable gyroscope caused a halt in scientific activities again on November 21st. After a successful recovery, the Hubble re-entered safe mode on November 23rd.

Will the Hubble continue its mission?

NASA’s team is currently conducting tests to pinpoint the issue and find a solution. If necessary, they’ll adjust the spacecraft to function with a single gyroscope. During the final space shuttle servicing mission in 2009, six new gyroscopes were installed on the Hubble. Presently, three of these gyroscopes are still operational. While the Hubble ideally uses three gyroscopes for optimal efficiency, it can carry on with scientific observations using just one gyroscope if required.

NASA anticipates that, alongside other observatories like the James Webb Space Telescope, the Hubble will persist in making groundbreaking discoveries over the next decade and potentially longer, contributing significantly to scientific exploration during this time.

Realme GT5 Pro official images confirm its design elements

Realme has officially announced the launch of its highly anticipated flagship, the Realme GT5 Pro, scheduled for December 7. The company has shared some images showcasing the design of the Realme GT5 Pro in detail.

A circular camera module with a structured metal ring around it

The phone comes with a circular camera module design. It is similar to the Oppo Find X6 Pro but with a quad camera setup. Like the said Oppo flagship, the Realme GT5 Pro also boasts a structured metal ring around its camera module, which looks good.

Moving to the rear panel, we see a leather finish. The middle frame is made of super duralumin, which has reportedly increased the drop resistance by 40%. It has reportedly surpassed the strength of the high-end materials like the titanium alloy, which is used on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The middle frame adopts a flat design but in a way that doesn’t jab in your hands. You can see it from the images.

Coming to the front, here’s a BOE panel that you can adjust up to 1000nit brightness manually. However, it reaches up to 1600 nits in bright lighting conditions, for example in outdoor situations. And now comes the advertising material – the panel can reach up to 4500nit local peak brightness. It means a small portion of the display can achieve the 4500nit value during certain scenarios, for example during an HDR video playback in bright ambient conditions.

In other aspects, the Realme GT5 Pro is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset and uses the industry’s largest VC heat dissipation system.

All iPhone 16 Models Tipped To Get Action Button

Apple follows the tradition of differentiating the non-pro iPhones from the pro models. Last year, the company introduced the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro. This year it arrived on the non-pro iPhone 15. The Cupertino-based tech giant also replaced the mute switch with the new action button on the latest generation iPhone 15 Pro variants. However, it did not make its way to the non-pro models. Now a new report suggests that the action button will become mainstream on next year’s iPhone 16 series.

All iPhone 16 models will get action button

MacRumours reports that Apple will introduce the action button on all four iPhone 16 series devices including the standard, plus, pro, and pro max variants. The company is also working on making the button more powerful by adding more features. The publication adds that Apple will make the button capacitive instead of a mechanical switch. It will work with force sensor feedback similar to the Touch ID on older iPhones and the Force Touch trackpad on MacBooks. The revamped action button is codenamed Atlas under development.

Apple is also said to be experimenting with different sizes of action buttons on the iPhone 16 with some designs having larger buttons than the iPhone 15 Pro models. The changes are based on pre-product information through internal documents. Hence the actual implementation could slightly be different.

The report also adds that the action button will be joined by the new capacitive Capture button that is said to be planned for the iPhone 16 lineup. The fourth-generation iPhone SE is also rumoured to feature the action button. This will completely put an end to the mute switch on future iPhone models.

Baseus launches CM10 single-ear TWS earphone with solar charging

Baseus has launched its latest TWS earphone, the CM10, in the Chinese market. The CM10 is a single-ear earphone that boasts a unique design and several innovative features. Let’s delve into its details in this story.

Baseus CM10 single-ear TWS earphone

Baseus CM10 TWS Specifications

As aforementioned, CM10 is a single-ear earphone, meaning that it only comes with one earbud. This makes it ideal for people who need hands-free calling while driving or for those who prefer to keep one ear free to hear their surroundings.

The CM10 is equipped with dual mics and environmental noise cancellation to help with clear calls in noisy environments.

One of its unique features is that the earbud automatically connects to your phone when it senses the vibration of a closing car door. I’m a little skeptical of this feature since the company hasn’t explained in detail how it works.

The CM10’s charging case is also unique in that it has a split design with a base. The base is a small solar panel that attaches magnetically to the charging case, and you can charge it wherever there is sunlight. You also get a Type-C port in case you need to charge the earbud via a power outlet.

Each earbud has a 30mAh battery, while the charging case has a 400mAh battery. This provides a total battery life of up to 50 hours, with the earbuds themselves lasting about 6 hours on a single charge.

The Baseus CM10 comes in two stylish color options: black and white. Likewise, it utilizes Bluetooth 5.3 technology, ensuring a stable connection with a range of up to 10 meters.

Priced at 199 Yuan, the Baseus CM10 is available for purchase on JD.com.

Project Boston: The Unfulfilled Dream of an Activision Blizzard Android Game Store

The primary avenues for installing games and applications on Android and iOS devices are the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. While Apple currently dominates within its ecosystem, the situation is different for Google. Android’s open platform has allowed competing stores to challenge the Play Store for quite some time. Notably, Activision Blizzard, the developer of popular games like Call of Duty, nearly became one of these competitors.

Activision Blizzard’s Interest in Competing with Google Play Store

Before diving into the details, let’s address a fundamental question: Why would companies like Activision Blizzard want to compete with the Play Store and App Store when uploading an app to these stores seems like a simpler process? The answer typically boils down to one thing: money.

Microsoft Activision Blizzard

Both Google and Apple take a commission from the revenue generated by every game uploaded to their respective app stores. So, if you make a purchase within a game like Call of Duty Mobile, Activision Blizzard has to pay a portion of that money to the store owner. This commission usually ranges from 5% to 30%. It appears that Activision grew weary of this arrangement and explored the idea of competing with Google in 2019 by creating its own store.

The company initiated a project codenamed “Boston.” The plan involved featuring games like Candy Crush, Call of Duty Mobile, and Diablo Immortal on this platform and removing them from the Play Store. However, these plans never materialized, primarily due to the variable nature of store commissions.

For developers relying solely on this income, paying the requested amount to Google is non-negotiable. Yet, for a gaming giant like Activision Blizzard, negotiations could lead to a special deal. This would enable them to reduce the commission to a level that is acceptable or potentially eliminate it altogether. Google seems determined to maintain its dominance through such strategic maneuvers.

In the case of Apple, currently unrivaled in its position, there are expectations that it will open iOS to new app stores with the iOS 17.2 update, following European Union laws. When this occurs, the company is anticipated to adopt strategies similar to its competitor.
