China’s Chip equipment imports surge, fueling global concerns

In a remarkable uptick, Chinese imports of chipmaking equipment witnessed an astonishing 90% surge in the last quarter, reaching a total value of $8.7 billion, as reported by Nikkei’s analysis of Chinese customs data. Notably, lithography equipment imports experienced an unprecedented fourfold increase, with a sixfold surge from the Netherlands alone, following the imposition of export controls by the Dutch government in September.

ASML, a leading player in lithography equipment, saw China’s share in its sales skyrocket to 46% last quarter, a substantial leap from 14% in 2022. Despite concerns that these imports might be used for high-end semiconductor production, ASML’s CFO emphasized that the shipments were designated for mid-critical and mature production processes, circumventing the advanced semiconductor sanctions.

The geographical breakdown of imports indicates a shifting landscape. Japanese imports increased by 40%, with contributions from Tokyo Electron’s specialty in lithography and etching equipment. Meanwhile, imports from the U.S. grew by 20%, although the American share dropped to 9% from 17% in 2021. Dutch imports surged to 30%, and Japan’s share declined to 25% from 32%.

Export restrictions imposed by the U.S., Japan, and the Netherlands in October 2022 triggered concerns about the potential misuse of imported equipment. The Semiconductor Industry Association urged stronger coordination among allies to maintain a level playing field in response to expanded U.S. curbs.

China’s Semiconductor Market:

In the global market, China emerged as the largest market for semiconductor production equipment, representing 29% of global sales in the April-June quarter, according to trade group SEMI.

The highlight was, Huawei’s release of a 5G smartphone featuring a homemade advanced 7-nanometer chip despite U.S. restrictions. Questions, however, lingered about the fabrication sources as Huawei faced limitations on using American equipment.

The current U.S. efforts to restrict chip exports to China, focusing on EDA tools and capital equipment, aim to curb China’s drive toward semiconductor self-sufficiency. While China boasts a large chip market demand and government support, it faces challenges in dependency on key inputs like EDA and capital equipment. As China aims to expand in mature nodes like 28 nm, it faces reluctance from Europe and Japan and limited acceptance in foreign markets.

In comparison, the Snapdragon 7+ Gen2 features a CPU with 1×2.91GHz big core, 3×2.49GHz, and 4×1.8GHz cores, along with an integrated Adreno 725 GPU. It’s evident that the Snapdragon 7 Gen3’s specifications are slightly downgraded in terms of performance compared to the Snapdragon 7+ Gen2.

The Snapdragon 7+ Gen2 has only been adopted in a few models like the Redmi Note 12 Turbo and the Realme GT Neo5 SE, primarily due to its higher cost. This means that not many consumers have experienced its capabilities.

For the Snapdragon 7 Gen3, Qualcomm seems to have made a strategic decision to focus on efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The chip appears to be positioned as a mid-range processor, rather than a sub-flagship model, making it a more accessible choice for smartphone manufacturers.

Global OnePlus 12 launch imminent as it secures another key certification

OnePlus is working on the OnePlus 12 flagship phone for the Chinese and global markets. The model number of the Chinese variant is not yet known, but the global edition will reportedly have the CPH2581 model number. The global edition of the OnePlus 12 has been previously spotted at other certification platforms, such as Singapore’s IMDA, UAE’s TDRA, and Europe’s EEC. It also appeared on Geekbench with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, 16 GB of RAM, and the Android 14 OS. Apart from 100W charging, the device is expected to support 50W wireless charging, a first on a OnePlus smartphone.

The OnePlus 12 is confirmed to feature a 50-megapixel Sony LYT-T808 main camera and a 64-megapixel OmniVision OV64B periscope telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom.

While the OnePlus 12 is expected to launch soon in China, reports surrounding it claim that its global launch will be held in January 2024. Reports claim that the OnePlus 12R featuring the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will also debut alongside the OP12. The 12R is expected to be released with the OnePlus Ace 3 moniker in China.

The side view of the phone, which can be seen in the teaser, showcases a unique right-angled frame design without a protruding lens module, setting it apart from competitors.

The only thing about the Red Magic 9 Pro that has been officially confirmed is that it will feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. However, a leak by the tipster Digital Chat Station has revealed what to expect from the photography capabilities of the device. According to the leaker, the device is equipped with an OIS-assisted 50-megapixel Samsung GN5 primary camera, which has a 1/1.57 sensor size. It will be complemented by a 50-megapixel Samsung JN1 ultra-wide-angle lens.

Reports have claimed that the Nubia phone bearing the NX769J that has appeared on some certification platforms as well as Geekbench is likely to break cover as the Red Magic 9 Pro. Apart from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, the device is expected to offer Red Magic UI-based Android 14, a 6,000mAh battery, 100W wired charging, and an under-display selfie camera.

Reports have claimed that the X100 Pro+ will have a customized 200-megapixel periscope telephoto camera, which may offer up to 10x optical zoom. Being a non-Pro device, the Xcover 7 could be equipped with a less powerful chipset. At present, there is no word on whether Samsung plans to launch a Pro version of the device.

According to a recent report, the Xcover 7 has the SM-G556B model number, which is similar to the SM-A556B model number that is associated with the upcoming Galaxy A55. Hence, it is likely that the Xcover 7 could end up as a rugged version of the A55, which is expected to feature the forthcoming Exynos 1480 chipset. The other details of the A55 are under wraps.

Floating window feature adds support for more applications. Finally, the Gallery app gets custom album cover and password lock functions for hidden albums.

Like any other OTA system update, this one too is being rolled out in batches. Therefore, some users may receive it earlier while others might have to wait.

We are not sure if and when these features will be available outside mainland China. They will likely reach in some capacity in the near future.

Recently, WhatsApp has released a new beta update (version 2.23.24.20), introducing a secret code feature for locked chats, available to some beta testers. This secret code feature allows users to hide the entry point to view locked chats, enhancing privacy.

How does this secret code feature work?

With this feature, users configure a secret code, and the entry point disappears from the chat list. Instead, users access locked chats by entering the secret code in the Chats tab’s search bar. Additionally, WhatsApp is adding a feature that allows users to easily clear their list of locked chats directly from the privacy settings. This feature comes in handy if a user forgets their secret code, as it prevents them from getting locked out of their conversations.

This enhanced privacy ensures that locked conversations remain hidden, protecting sensitive information from unauthorized access or accidental exposure. Even if someone gains physical access to a user’s phone, they won’t access these secured conversations without the secret code.

WhatsApp continues to work on other features, including a privacy feature to hide IP addresses during calls and an alternate profile feature for separating work and personal communication. WhatsApp’s intention to introduce in-app ads has also been confirmed by its head.

To apply, navigate to Settings, select About device, tap on Up to date, then tap the icon on the top right, proceed to Beta program, and follow the provided steps.

Following the closure of the application channel, the review process will take place within 5 workdays. Redmi Note 13 4G gets FCC certified, on its way to the global market

Xiaomi has a new smartphone in the making called the Redmi Note 13 4G. The device has already emerged on Singapore’s IMDA certification website. Now, it has also visited the FCC certification database revealing some key specs.

The device, identified by the model number 23129RA5FL comes with support for 2G, 3G, and 4G networks, along with compatibility for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi networks. It is a dual-SIM device with GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BDS, and SBAS support for navigation. Additionally, Bluetooth connectivity is featured and it will come pre-loaded with MIUI 14, which we know is based on Android 13.

Although the listing does not reveal any further specification details, an earlier report has claimed that the processor will be the same Snapdragon 685 as last year.
