Even Intel i9 Chip Can’t Compete with ARM-Based PCs and Apple Silicon

Technology continues to advance rapidly. While this often benefits consumers, even billion-dollar tech giants can sometimes struggle to keep up with this pace. It appears that Intel is currently facing a similar challenge. Nvidia, AMD, and Qualcomm are all working on ARM-based PC platforms, and Apple’s success with ARM-based technology has demonstrated its potential across the PC landscape. If Intel doesn’t adapt to this change, the company could face some serious challenges. Here are the details…

Intel’s PC chip ship is sinking with ARM-ada on the horizon

Intel is facing a number of serious challenges, including the rise of ARM-based PCs and Apple Silicon. Nvidia, AMD, and Qualcomm are all developing ARM-based PC platforms, which could pose a major threat to Intel’s dominance in the PC chip market. ARM-based chips are known for being more energy-efficient and less expensive than x86 chips, which are the type of chips that Intel uses.

Intel Xeon

Apple Silicon has also shown that ARM can be best-of-breed across the PC landscape. Apple’s M1 chip has outperformed Intel’s chips in a number of benchmarks, and it has helped to make Apple’s MacBooks some of the most popular laptops on the market. Intel also has a history of innovation failure. In the past, Intel has misread the market with the i860, the Itanium, and the Atom processors. These failures have cost Intel billions of dollars and have allowed its competitors to gain ground.

In the past, Intel has been able to use its dominance in the PC chip market to force its own standards on the industry. However, this approach is no longer sustainable. Intel needs to collaborate with other companies and be more flexible in order to meet the needs of its customers. It is too late for Intel to get back into the mobile market, and the dynamics that lost it the mobile market are spreading to commodity PCs and laptops. This is because the market is demanding more energy-efficient and less expensive devices.

Intel needs to improve its innovation process and focus on customer needs. If Intel can do these things, it may be able to survive in the new era of computing. However, if Intel fails to change, it could be left behind by its competitors.

Google develops tech to turn ANC earbuds into cardiac monitors

Google researchers have developed a new technology called APG (Audioplethysmography) that can turn any existing ANC earbuds into cardiac monitors with the help of a software update. The tech giant published a research paper titled “APG: Audioplethysmography for Cardiac Monitoring in Hearables” detailing this new tech.

Google APG earbuds cardiac monitoring

Google says APG is an acoustic sensing system that sends a low-intensity ultrasound probing signal using the speakers on ANC earbuds and headphones and receives the echoes via the onboard microphones. The company then uses a mathematical model to analyze and convert the ultrasound echoes into heart rate readings.

Google conducted an eight-month field study with 153 participants to evaluate APG and found that it is highly accurate in reporting heart rate readings (3.21% median error) and heart rate variability readings (2.70% median error).

The tech even works to monitor cardiac activity when music is playing on the earbuds and when the body is in motion while doing activities like running.

Google is now focusing on testing APG with more rigorous motion activities like hiking, weightlifting, boxing, and HIIT (high-intensity interval training) to improve the performance of the tech. The company believes that APG has the potential to enable many other exciting health research opportunities.

Chinese EV maker BYD reports $22.7B revenue, profit of $1.4B in Q3 2023

BYD is a Chinese multinational company that specializes in manufacturing automobiles, electronics, and rechargeable batteries. Known for its commitment to sustainable technology, BYD has gained recognition for its electric vehicles, hybrid cars, and buses, contributing to the global shift towards cleaner transportation options.

Apart from its automotive business, BYD manufactures electronic components for mobile phones and LED lighting solutions. The company has recently released its third-quarter financial report.

BYD

BYD’s Q3 2023 Financial Report

In the third quarter, BYD reported robust financial growth with impressive figures. Their revenue reached CNY 162.151 billion ($22.701 billion), a substantial increase of 38.49% from the previous year. Net profits also surged to CNY 10.413 billion ($1.458 billion), representing an 82.16% rise. These results highlight strong market support and operational efficiency, consistent with their earlier forecast of a significant net profit increase for the first three quarters of 2023.

Although this quarter’s profits didn’t surpass the CNY 10.954 billion ($1.534 billion) reported in the mid-year, it does establish a historic high for BYD. This achievement marks the first time they have exceeded the CNY 10 billion milestone within a single quarter, a feat they previously accomplished only on an annual basis in 2022.

BYD’s financial success can be primarily attributed to strong vehicle sales. In September, they introduced 287,454 new vehicles, with the majority being passenger cars at 286,903 units, reflecting a substantial 42.8% year-on-year increase.

Over the first nine months of the year, cumulative sales reached an impressive 2.07 million vehicles, demonstrating a remarkable 76.23% surge from the previous year. These figures underscore BYD’s growing prominence in the automotive sector and the effectiveness of its market capture strategy.

Additionally, BYD is expanding its brand presence through its subsidiary, Formula Leopard, by opening 70 new direct-operated stores, with 10 more planned. They aim to increase consumer touchpoints in 60+ major cities by the end of 2023, focusing on improving customer experiences and service quality.

BYD has also expanded its presence in 2023 across several countries, including Brazil, India, Indonesia, Mexico, and Thailand, with a focus on electric vehicles and batteries. They’ve formed partnerships with local companies and governments to produce electric buses and vehicles. However, there was a setback in India as their $1 billion electric vehicle factory proposal was rejected.

Civilized Cycles Unveils Game-Changing Semi-Trike for Urban Deliveries

If you thought electric bikes were just for cruising around the neighborhood, think again. Brooklyn’s Civilized Cycles is pushing the envelope on what electric cargo bikes can do. Their Model 1 won over urban commuters with its expandable luggage feature. Now, they’re setting their sights higher—or should we say, heavier—with the Semi-Trike.

The trike has a maximum carrying capacity of 750 pounds

Imagine a semi-truck, that king of the highway, but on a smaller, nimbler scale. That’s the inspiration behind the Semi-Trike, and it aims to make cargo delivery in crowded cities a whole lot smoother. With a maximum carrying capacity of 750 pounds, this isn’t your ordinary e-bike. From furniture to fresh produce, this trike aims to move it all, proving that e-bikes can be more than just an alternative to cars—they can replace delivery trucks too.

Electric

What sets the Semi-Trike apart is its versatility. The attached trailer can be adapted in various ways to meet the needs of different businesses. You want to transport a couple of refrigerators or a bunch of parcels? No problem. The design comes complete with a three-wheeled “tractor” that boasts adjustable ergonomics for the rider, including a comfy saddle with a backrest and customizable handlebars. Safety and comfort are clearly top priorities here.

On the tech front, the Semi-Trike isn’t skimping either. It’s expected to offer three different models: Economy, Standard, and Commercial. Each comes with a distinct motor setup and safety-certified batteries. The trailer itself is engineered for stability and safety, featuring auto-self-leveling air suspension and electric drum brakes. This ensures that whatever you’re carrying, it will get there in one piece.

Toyota’s New FT-Se Aims for Speed and Cooling, Especially at the Tough Nürburgring Track

Toyota turned heads when they showed off their new electric sports car, the FT-Se, at the Japan Mobility Show. But the cool stuff doesn’t just stop at the electric engine and dual motors. The real kicker? Toyota’s got big plans for this car on one of the world’s toughest race tracks, the Nürburgring.

The company states that the car won’t perform well if battery gets too hot

Known as the “Green Hell,” the Nürburgring is a crazy long and tricky track. It’s almost 13 miles end-to-end! Toyota’s top engineer, Fumihiko Hazama, didn’t spill the beans on what lap time they’re aiming for, but he did say that keeping the car’s special battery cool on this long track is a huge challenge. In simple terms, if the battery gets too hot, the car won’t perform well.

Toyota

What’s really cool is how much thought Toyota’s putting into making this car a true sports car. It’s not just about going fast. They’re also focusing on keeping the car light but strong. They’re using a mix of materials like plastic reinforced with carbon fiber, aluminum, and steel to get the job done.

And don’t think the FT-Se is just an electric version of Toyota’s older sports cars, like the MR2 or Supra. According to project manager Hideaki Iida, this car is its own beast. That means Toyota is looking to do something fresh, not just rehash old hits with an electric twist.

G7 Nations Unite on AI to Design A Guidebook for Ethical Innovation

To address the growing concerns around artificial intelligence (AI), the Group of Seven (G7) industrial nations have announced a voluntary code of conduct for AI development. This is aimed towards balancing innovation with ethical considerations, as the code will serve as a guide for companies involved in cutting-edge AI research and implementation.

It was suggested that companies regularly publish AI-oriented reports

Initiated during a meeting in May known as the “Hiroshima AI process,” the leaders of the G7 countries, which include Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Britain, and the United States, as well as the European Union, have finally reached consensus. The 11-point code puts emphasis on “safe, secure, and trustworthy AI,” offering guidelines for companies to identify and mitigate risks throughout the lifecycle of AI products.

Artificial Intelligence

Rather than just outlining what not to do, the code encourages companies to be transparent. It suggests that firms should regularly publish reports detailing the capabilities and limitations of their AI systems, as well as any observed misuse. This could serve as a catalyst for a culture of responsible AI development, moving the industry from a reactive to a proactive stance on ethical concerns.

While the European Union has been a trailblazer in AI regulations through its stringent AI Act, other nations have taken a more economic growth-oriented approach. The G7 code, thus, serves as a middle ground, harmonizing the global approach toward AI ethics and safety. According to Vera Jourova, European Commission digital chief, the code can act as a bridge until more concrete regulations come into play.
