Five upcoming Nokia TVs arrive on Bluetooth SIG

StreamView GmbH is one of the many brand licensees of Nokia. The company sells Nokia-branded smart TVs, set-top boxes, and DAB+ radios in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA).

This Austrian company is about to refresh its Nokia smart TV lineup. Five models have come up on Bluetooth SIG. Let’s have a look at them.

Nokia Logo Featured

NokiaMob has spotted upcoming Nokia-branded smart TVs on Bluetooth SIG. There will be a total of 5 models and all of them will support Bluetooth 5.1.

These televisions carry the following model numbers.

  • HN24GE320C
  • HN32GE320C
  • FN32GE320
  • FN40GE320
  • FN43GE320

The ‘HN’ models will come with HD resolution (1366 x 768 pixels). Whereas, the ‘FN’ models will offer FHD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels).

As far as sizes are concerned, the HD TVs will be available in 24 and 32 inches. On the other hand, the FHD TVs will come in 32, 40, and 43 inches.

These televisions are manufactured by Express Luck Technology Limited. This company has an annual production capacity of 8 million devices in China. It even makes Sharp-branded TVs.

Unfortunately, that’s all the information we have on these forthcoming Nokia smart TVs. They will most likely boot Android TV or perhaps the new Google TV. There should also be support for all the leading streaming platforms.

ColorOS 14 public beta live for Oppo Find X6, X5, Reno 10 Pro+, 9 Pro+

Oppo has been beta testing the ColorOS 14 on many smartphones. Recently, the brand announced closed beta program for the OnePlus Ace 2, Ace Pro, and OnePlus 10 Pro in China. And today, it has announced a public beta update for a bunch of its flagships, including the Oppo Find X6, Find X5, Reno 10 Pro+, and more. Here are the details.

ColorOS 14 should bring all the Android 14 features

Oppo has been testing ColorOS 14 on the Find X6 series and Reno 9 series for several weeks. However, the program was limited to a handful of users. Now, the company has announced the ColorOS 14 public beta program for the Find X6, Find X5, Reno 10 Pro+, and Reno 9 Pro+. Oppo is starting to recruit beta testers in China today for the next two days. The company will review the candidates within 5 days and begin rolling out the update shortly.

Before upgrading to Android 14-based ColorOS 14, be sure to back up your important personal data to avoid losing it due to incompatibility or other issues. Oppo warns that many popular third-party apps are not yet compatible with Android 14. After upgrading, these apps may not work properly (for example, they may crash, freeze, have black screens, or drain your battery).

While Oppo is doing a good job releasing beta updates for Android 14, none of its smartphones have received the stable update yet. This is not far behind the competition, but it is not as good as Oppo’s performance last year, when it was one of the first OEMs to release a stable Android 13 update. The Chinese company has confirmed it will be officially launching the latest ColorOS 14 on November 14.

TSMC faces Profit Decline amid Chip industry downturn

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC) is expected to announce a 30% decline in third-quarter profit on Thursday, reflecting a slowdown in the chip industry. Analysts had anticipated this slump, with the company’s profit estimated at $6 billion for July-September. This marks the second consecutive quarter of profit decline for the world’s largest contract chipmaker, attributing it to the weakened global demand for semiconductors since the latter half of the previous year.

TSMC’s revenue for the third quarter stood at approximately $17 billion, down 20% from the previous year, a figure well within the company’s projected range. This downturn mirrors the industry’s trend as inventories at smartphone and computer manufacturers diminish, paving the way for an expected uptick in restocking demand.

Despite these challenges, TSMC’s stock price has surged due to increased chip demand for artificial intelligence applications. Investors, however, remain cautious as the company navigates uncertainties in customer demand. Reports suggest that TSMC has urged its major suppliers to delay the delivery of high-end chip-making equipment, although the delay is anticipated to be short-term.

Analysts are closely monitoring TSMC’s outlook for the fourth quarter and beyond and have predicted a slow start to the next year, with a 10% growth expected in the first quarter. Concerns loom over potential order cancellations towards the end of the year and mild restocking demand. The fate of TSMC’s partnership with major customer Apple remains pivotal, with analysts expressing worries that Apple might revise its orders.

TSMC reported its net revenue for September 2023 at approximately NT$180.43 billion, reflecting a 4.4% decrease from August 2023 and a 13.4% decrease from September 2022. The cumulative revenue for January through September 2023 amounted to NT$1,536.21 billion, indicating a 6.2% decrease compared to the same period in 2022.

The semiconductor industry’s recovery hinges on various factors, including the global economic climate, consumer demand, and technological advancements. Analysts remain cautiously optimistic about TSMC’s future, emphasizing the need for adaptability and strategic planning in the face of evolving market dynamics. TSMC’s performance in the coming quarters will undoubtedly be closely watched by industry stakeholders and investors alike.

Baidu unveils Ernie Bot 4.0, claims parity with OpenAI’s GPT-4

In a bold move signaling China’s stride in artificial intelligence (AI), Baidu Inc.’s CEO, Robin Li, announced the latest version of their AI chatbot, Ernie Bot 4.0, at the Baidu World 2023 conference in Beijing. Li showcased Ernie’s remarkable ability to provide nuanced answers and solve intricate puzzles in real time. The tech mogul declared that Ernie Bot 4.0 has reached a level of sophistication comparable to OpenAI’s renowned GPT-4, marking a significant achievement in the race for AI supremacy.

Baidu, often dubbed China’s Google equivalent, has been investing aggressively in AI technology after witnessing the disruptive potential demonstrated by ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI. Despite challenges posed by US sanctions on advanced chips and Beijing’s stringent censorship, Baidu has managed to forge ahead.

Ernie Bot, which previously surpassed 45 million users, was put through a series of rigorous tests during the conference. Li tested its capabilities by asking complex questions about buying property, solving mathematical problems, and even requesting the chatbot to compose a novel set in the world of ancient martial arts. These demonstrations highlighted Ernie Bot’s enhanced understanding, prompting, reasoning, and memorization abilities.

Baidu’s journey in the AI landscape began earlier this year when Ernie Bot 3.5 outperformed OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 in comprehension. Building on this success, Ernie Bot 4.0 has now achieved parity with OpenAI’s GPT-4, making it a formidable contender in the global AI arena.

However, the competition remains fierce. While Ernie Bot has made significant strides, it is essential to note that ChatGPT boasts an estimated 180 million users, highlighting the dominance of OpenAI’s technology. Moreover, the absence of official availability of foreign products like ChatGPT in mainland China or Hong Kong has spurred Chinese tech giants such as Baidu and Alibaba Group Holding to innovate and create their own AI solutions tailored to local sensitivities.

Chinese authorities have issued new guidelines and regulations to ensure AI-generated content aligns with official narratives. Baidu’s Ernie Bot has adapted to these regulations by avoiding sensitive topics and redirecting conversations when necessary.

As Baidu continues to integrate Ernie Bot into flagship products such as search, maps, file-sharing, work collaboration, and data analytics, the tech giant remains at the forefront of China’s AI revolution.

Apple hikes iPad 10th Gen WiFi + Cellular price in China by 36%

Earlier today, Apple unveiled a new Apple Pencil for iPads featuring a USB Type-C port. Alongside the latest stylus, the company also announced a new version of iPad 10th Gen WiFi + Cellular for China.

This version of the iPad arrives with eSIM capability. For the unaware, the original cellular model is limited to a physical SIM card slot in China, unlike the variant sold in the rest of the world.

This makes the newly announced iPad 10th Gen WiFi + Cellular only ‘new’ for China.

The rest of the configuration remains the same. It even retains the physical SIM card slot.

ipad 10th gen

But Apple has decided to hike the price by a lot. It costs ¥4,799 (~$655) and ¥5,999 (~$820) for 64GB and 256GB memory configurations, respectively.

For comparison, the original model without eSIM was introduced at just ¥3,599 (~$490) and ¥4,799 (~$655). That’s a price hike of ¥1200 (36%) without any meaningful upgrades.

Similarly, the new Apple Pencil (USB-C) is so basic. It does not support pressure sensitivity, wireless pairing/charging, and double tap to change tools.

Hence, it is the most affordable stylus from the company priced at just $79. Anyway, users can charge it conveniently through a USB Type-C port now.

The new iPad 10th Gen WiFi + Cellular for China is already up for sale. Weirdly, eSIM is compatible with only a single carrier (China Unicom) at launch.

On the other hand, the Apple Pencil (USB-C) will be available globally starting in early November.

Apple Pencil Announced As A Value Offering With USB-C But Downgraded Features

Today, Apple has introduced its third generation Apple Pencil. It is an affordable offering compared to the second-generation pencil. However, the caveat? It is a downgraded version with fewer features compared to the previous model. The new accessory is all about value offering enough for note-taking, journaling, etc but definitely not ideal for creative professionals. It is positioned between the original first-generation and second-generation offerings.

Apple Pencil (USB-C) specifications and features

The newest Apple Pencil retains the same design as the previous models with a matte finish and a flat side that can be attached magnetically to the side of the iPad. However, it lacks wireless charging and instead, the accessory will go into a sleep state to preserve the battery life. The new Apple Pencil measures 7.5 x 155mm and weighs 20.5 grams

In terms of usage, the new Apple Pencil offers pixel-perfect accuracy, low latency, and tilt sensitivity. It supports the hover feature on the iPad Pro models. However, the latest version misses out on the pressure sensitivity, wireless charging and pairing, and double tap features which are found on the 2nd generation pencil.

Apple has added a sliding cap on the newest Pencil that reveals a USB-C port for charging. The accessory is also compatible with USB-C-supported iPads. These include third to sixth-generation iPad Pro 12.9, first to fourth-generation iPad Pro 11, fourth and fifth-generation iPad Air, tenth-generation iPad, and lastly, the sixth-generation iPad Mini.

The new Apple Pencil with USB-C is priced at $79 ($69 for education), €95, Rs 7,900. It will be available for purchase starting in early November.

Snapchat will Now Let Users Embed Content, also Introduces AI-Powered Fill Features

Snapchat is evolving, and it’s not just about sending quirky pictures to your friends anymore. The platform has introduced two game-changing features that make sharing content easier and more interactive, levelling the playing field with social media giants like Instagram and TikTok.

Snapchat is trying hard to compete with Instagram and other social media platforms

The first feature allows users to embed Snapchat content, such as Lenses, Spotlight videos, and public stories, right into a website. This new capability makes Snapchat more versatile as a content-sharing platform. While Instagram and TikTok have long offered this feature, Snapchat is putting its unique spin by adding it as a natural progression from features like discovering local hotspots and its web-based platform rolled out earlier this year.

Snap

The second feature employs OpenAI technology to enhance your snaps. Unlike the standard filters and features, this new tool offers an imaginative view of your surroundings, filling in the border areas of a snap to complete the scene. It’s like Photoshop’s Content-Aware Fill but in real-time, right on your smartphone. This feature is a treat for Snapchat+ subscribers, adding more value to the premium experience.

What’s notable here is Snapchat’s commitment to incorporating AI into its platform, a step that began with the launch of the My AI chatbot earlier this year. The company has been offering AI-driven features as exclusive perks for Snapchat+ subscribers, differentiating the premium experience from the standard one.

So why does this matter? As Snapchat gears up to compete with other social media platforms, these new features are not just additional tools; they signify a direction. They reveal how Snapchat is positioning itself as a more integrated and AI-enhanced platform, aiming to offer something for everyone—from the casual snap-shooter to the tech-savvy user.

Apple’s New Facetime Reactions are Getting Triggered during FaceTime Calls

Apple’s recent update for iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma is full of fresh additions to make your device more fun and interactive. While these updates promise to make communication more lively, they’ve also been causing quite the stir, especially in settings where a more somber tone is required.

The same Facetime reactions can also pop up during Facetime meetings

The update allows FaceTime users to add 3D reactions like emojis and other visual effects by making simple hand gestures. For instance, thumbs-up can prompt a 3D emoji, and other gestures can produce balloons or even fireworks on the screen. It sounds fun on paper, but in practice, not everyone is laughing.

iPhone 15 Pro Max iOS 17.0.3 performance and thermals

One of the most noteworthy complaints comes from the telehealth community. Imagine discussing a serious issue with your therapist, only for fireworks to burst on screen as you give a thumbs-up to acknowledge a point. This exact scenario happened to a user, as shared by Matt Haughey on Mastodon. It’s no wonder SimplePractice, a telehealth service, has started issuing warnings about FaceTime’s flashy features that are turned on by default.

The issue extends beyond therapy sessions. What if you’re on a professional call and an inadvertent hand gesture sends confetti streaming across the screen? It can be mortifying and not at all in line with the tone of a business discussion.

Though you can disable these 3D reactions, many users are unaware of this, leading to awkward and sometimes inappropriate moments. For those who rely on FaceTime for serious conversations, Apple‘s attempt to liven up interactions might be a case of good intentions gone awry. As it stands, sometimes less is more—even in the age of AR.

Twitch gets inspired by Instagram and adds Stories

Earlier today (17th October 2023), Twitch officially announced that it is bringing a new social feature. The company is rolling out Stories for the mobile application of its popular live streaming platform. So here are all the details.

Is Twitch becoming a new social media platform?

With the new announcement, Twitch has added a social feature that is clearly inspired by popular social media platforms like Snapchat and Instagram. This feature works just like the one on other social media and allows streamers to upload pictures, texts, or videos that expire after 48 hours. As per official notes, the move is aimed at helping creators reach out to their audience and help them stay connected even when they are offline.

Twitch Stories

The feature was first teased back in July and is finally rolling out. Initially, the feature will only be accessible to Twitch affiliates and partners. Although they will need to have streamed at least once in the last 30 days to gain access to the stories feature. So now, every user with the latest version of the application will be able to see the stories at the top of the ‘Following’ page.

Keep in mind, that creators also need to have at least 30 subscribers to be able to make subscriber only stories. Twitch has also recommended that you use this feature to add “more value to your supporters’ subscriptions through exclusive content.” It added that “Viewers will see your stories live alongside stories created by other streamers they follow, so post regularly throughout the week to keep your community in-the-know and up-to-date between your streams.
