Samsung Electronics Co. has recently filed a series of robotics patents in the United States, signaling its commitment to exploring robotics as a potential growth sector. The patents cover a range of applications, including walking assistance devices and pet monitoring machines, showcasing Samsung’s focus on developing innovative robotic technologies.

Samsung pet monitor robot

Samsung’s robotics patents bring us closer to a technologically advanced lifestyle

One of the patents involves a robotic technology specifically designed to monitor pets’ movements and detect their emotions. Unlike pet robots requiring manual control, Samsung’s robot has autonomous capabilities. Shaped like a round device and equipped with two wheels, it can follow and track pets in real time. The robot utilizes an internal camera to analyze pet behavior patterns, enabling it to detect emotions and movements accurately. Additionally, integrated microphones allow the robot to recognize sounds produced by pets, facilitating interactive communication with pet owners.

Samsung Electronics also filed a patent for a walking assist robot intended to be worn by individuals. This robot, anticipated to be part of Samsung’s prospective healthcare robotic brand called BotFit, aims to assist people with limited mobility, particularly the elderly. It operates along pre-programmed routes, ensuring seamless and safe movement even in situations where communication is disrupted due to device errors. Notably, the device has received ISO 13849 certification.

Samsung Bot Fit

Samsung Electronics’ patented robot finger has garnered attention due to its potential applications in industrial, medical, and home settings. The robot finger comprises two sensors that enable object detection and grasping.

Addressing the need for efficient disinfection in public spaces during contagious outbreaks, Samsung Electronics developed a spray-on robot. This machine utilizes sensors to identify areas that require disinfection, providing an automated solution for effectively combating the spread of diseases.

Another notable patent involves a technology that allows robots to detect various heights along their paths. Additionally, Samsung Electronics has designed a sensor specifically for automatic charging, simplifying the charging process for robotic devices.

Samsung Electronics has established a dedicated team of robot engineers, underscoring its commitment to expanding its presence in the robotics industry. OnePlus 12 Leaked Renders Reveal Minor Design Changes And Periscope Lens

OnePlus is expected to launch its next-generation flagship OnePlus 12 in December. It will arrive as the successor to the OnePlus 11. Although we are still a few months away from the official unveiling, leaks and rumors about the upcoming smartphone have started gathering pace. In a new development, the OnePlus 12 has appeared in leaked renders shared by none other than reliable tipster Steve Hemmerstoffer (aka onleaks).

OnePlus 12 surfaces in leaked renders

The leaked renders give us a look at the OnePlus 12 from all angles. Overall, it seems that it will retain the same design as its predecessor apart from minor changes. The device has a slim design with the alert slider and power button located on the right side and the volume rocker keys on the left edge. The smartphone is seen in a glossy Black color and the brand’s iconic sandstone finish.

Up front, the OnePlus 12 has minimal bezels surrounding the display. It has a small center-aligned punch-hole cutout for the selfie camera compared to the top left position on previous OnePlus flagships. The bottom edge of the device has a speaker grille and a USB-C port.

On the back, the OnePlus 12 also features the same half-pill-shaped island in a glossy finish that stretches from the side frame. It houses a circular module with a tweaked sensor alignment including two lenses at the top and one periscope lens below as it was previously reported. The latter also stands out with a distinct Black strip. However, this also means that OnePlus had to move the LED flash outside the circular module and place it at the top left corner of the pill-shaped island.

As per past leaks and rumors, the OnePlus 12 will reportedly be powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC and support 150W wired and 50W wireless charging. It is tipped to feature a 6.7-inch QHD+ OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate.

Nothing Phone (2) Passes With Flying Colors In JerryRigEverything’s Durability Test

Nothing launched its second smartphone, the Nothing Phone (2) in the global markets yesterday. It arrived with significant upgrades over its predecessor. It has a different Glyph Interface, Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC under the hood, a 50MP Sony IMX890 main camera, and a larger 4,700mAh battery unit. Now, the device has undergone popular YouTuber Zack Nelson’s (aka JerryRigEverything) comprehensive durability test. Read on to find out how the phone fares in all durability aspects.

Nothing Phone (2) durability test

The Nothing Phone (2) undergoes Zack’s array of durability tests including scratch, scrape, burn, and lastly bend test. The YouTuber begins by scratching the display of the device. It produces scratches at level 6 Mohs hardness scale with deeper grooves at level 7. This is quite common for Gorilla Glass-shielded screens. Both the front and back camera sensors are also protected by glass and don’t get easily scratched. Notably, the fingerprint sensor also works impressively despite being scratched multiple times.

The Nothing Phone (2) has a boxy side aluminum frame. It takes scratches on all sides in the scrape test. The smartphone also performs well in the burn test withstanding flame for nearly 25 seconds by remaining unscathed. There is a White spot where the flame hits and the dead pixels are restored quickly without any damage.

Now comes the ultimate tense part of JerryRigEverything’s durability tests – the bend test. Zack tries bending the Phone (2) twice from the left side where the volume rocker buttons are located and it stays intact. However, things become a little concerning when he tries bending from the right side and there is a noticeable separation where the power key is located. However, the device holds its ground even after three attempts.

Nothing Fold (1) is not launching anytime soon

Nothing just unveiled its highly anticipated smartphone, the Phone (2), for the global market. The device arrives as the successor to the Phone (1) and is the second handset from the brand. The company has built smartphones with a unique identity in the market, but it appears that they do not have any plans to make a device that folds.

Nothing isn’t planning on launching a foldable phone

Carl Pei, the CEO of Nothing, sat for an interview with India Today where he answered a couple of interesting questions. The executive officially confirmed that the brand has no plans on releasing a foldable smartphone. He believes that this segment of smartphones is still niche and only targets a very specific group of consumers. Furthermore, Pei stated that he isn’t too fascinated with such devices and feels like they are forced onto consumers who don’t really require such a smartphone.

Nothing

The CEO went as far as to claim that most foldable smartphones seem practically identical to him. He further added that the similarities are quite evident once you remove the logo and customers would not be able to differentiate between foldable offerings from different brands. As of right now, major smartphone makers like Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, Motorola, and have already launched such devices.

Interestingly enough, even OnePlus is rumored to soon launch its first-ever foldable smartphone in the market as well. Carl Pei calling foldable devices niche is also quite ironic considering many look at the Glyph interface as gimmicky as well.

Samsung Trademarks Three More Monikers Related To Smart Rings And Wearables

Last week, the Samsung Health beta app revealed support for Galaxy Ring suggesting that the brand might introduce its own smart ring or compatibility for smart rings made by other brands. The company has also trademarked smart ring monikers this year including three of them – Samsung Circle, Samsung Index, and Samsung Insight monikers last week. This has very well reignited the topic of a smart ring made by the South Korean brand.

Samsung trademarks more names related to smart rings and wearables

In a new development, Samsung has filed a trademark for three new monikers – Galaxy One, Galaxy Pulse, and Galaxy Rhythm. They were discovered at the Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service (KIPRIS) by GalaxyClub. This isn’t the first time Samsung is filing trademark applications for an under-development wearable device.

The previous trademarks pertaining to the Galaxy Circle, Galaxy Index, and Galaxy Insight classified them as “smart rings, smartwatches, smartphones, and wearable computers”. The filings for the new monikers classify them as “wearables, such as smart rings, bracelets, necklaces, and glasses.”

The report adds that the documentation attached to the applications reveals the software details mentioning “software application for smart rings for tracking, gathering, monitoring, detecting, recognizing, malfunctioning, transmitting, managing and assessing biometric and physiological data, vital signs and personal health records, and for providing medical advice.”

At this point, it remains to be seen what Samsung has in store for smart rings. A patent application from 2015 revealed that Samsung’s smart ring could be used to control smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, and smart home devices along with offering better health-tracking results. We will have to wait and see about the South Korean brand’s plans to launch its first smart ring.

Android 14 Beta 4 released, brings numerous bug fixes

Google has announced the release of Android 14 Beta 4, signaling that the stable version of the operating system may arrive in August. This latest update comes after months of development and bug squashing, resulting in a more polished build. Initially expected on July 5, the release was slightly delayed due to the holiday, but is now available for eligible Pixel devices, starting with the Pixel 4a (5G).

Android 14 release timeline

Android 14 Beta 4, identified by the build number UPB4.230623.005, includes the July security patches and weighs in at approximately 200MB, depending on the device. The release notes reveal an extensive list of bug fixes that address various system issues and improve overall performance.

What’s fixed in this update?

Among the developer-reported issues resolved are problems with notifications and Quick Settings tiles not functioning until a device was restarted, VoIP apps ceasing to record audio when the screen was locked or the app was in the background, and glitches with the display of the currently playing song when transitioning from always-on-display mode to the lock screen.

Other fixes include issues with charging, crashes of the Android System Intelligence service, errors related to the CredentialManager registry, null pointer exceptions in the HealthConnect API, boot loops, unresponsive elements in the system UI during mode switches, and unresponsiveness of the Picture-in-Picture (PiP) window when using certain apps in PiP mode and locking the screen.

Android 14

Additionally, the update addresses problems with the lock screen wallpaper, poor UI animations in the launcher, an incorrect intent picker dialog during work profile setup, incorrect display of rounded borders on notifications, unresponsiveness when eSIM was disabled, crashes caused by ConnectivityService, issues with the system volume slider, problems with TalkBack accessibility, fingerprint enrollment failures during device rotation, incorrect ranking of Bluetooth devices in the system audio output switcher, and various other stability and performance improvements. You can check out the full changelogs here.

Notably, this beta release is now available for the Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet devices as well, with users able to enroll in the beta program to receive prerelease updates. Based on previous release patterns, this is likely the second-to-last beta build before the stable release. Following a similar timeline to Android 13, which saw Beta 4 release in early July and the stable version in August, Google seems to be following a similar trajectory this year. While the update has begun rolling out, it may take some time to reach all users, depending on their device and carrier.

Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus Review: Elevates Oppo to Premium Segment in India

The Oppo Reno 10 series made its debut in China in late May. More than a month later, the lineup is gradually making its way to the global markets.

For the first time, the company is launching the ‘Pro+’ model in almost all regions. It acts as the brand’s flagship smartphone of 2023 outside mainland China since the Find X6 lineup remains exclusive to its home country.

Despite being the most expensive offering in many markets, the Reno family is not as premium as the Find X. It falls under the affordable premium category and focuses more on lifestyle aspects, like design and camera features.

For the unaware, we reviewed the Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus recently. The device proves that flagships can be thin and light.

The Indian division of Oppo also sent us a review unit. It is the company’s first ‘Reno Pro+’ handset in the country. Most importantly, it is the first proper Oppo-branded flagship smartphone in India since the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom.

While the phone may not feature the latest or the best hardware it is not as expensive as other flagships either. This puts the product in an interesting position.

Having used the handset for the last few weeks, I have expressed my thoughts on the device in this article. Before you start reading my opinion, I would like to put out a disclosure that Oppo had no early look or editorial input.

Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus

Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus is priced strategically

The Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus is priced at ₹54,999 in India. This pricing puts it comfortably between the OnePlus 11R and the OnePlus 11.

To recall, OnePlus is a sub-brand of Oppo but both operate as independent companies in India. However, when you take a look at their mainstream portfolio together, you get a complete picture.

Both brands together cover all the important price categories in the country. Their prime offerings start from ₹18,000 and go all the way up to ₹62,000. Thus, consumers get a OnePlus or Oppo option at every price segment.

Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus

As far as the Reno 10 Pro Plus is concerned, it can be termed a better option than the OnePlus 11R. So if your budget is under ₹60,000 and you are not a fan of the OnePlus 11 for some reason, this is a very good alternative.

The Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus is more of a lifestyle smartphone. It is not about ‘speed’ like OnePlus 11/11R but ‘fundamentals’ that matter more for a wider audience.

It has got a thin and light design, which I believe caters to more people. You also get excellent cameras and very useful rapid fast charging. All of these are part of the package that doesn’t sacrifice on the performance front either.

What’s more important is that the Reno 10 Pro Plus is more affordable than flagships from leading brands in India, such as Vivo, Xiaomi, Samsung, and Apple. So it is actually cleverly priced even though it sounds expensive.

Is Oppo trying to enter India’s premium segment?

Oppo has had its presence in India for over 9 years. But it is yet to make a name for itself in the premium category. On the other hand, its former sister brand OnePlus is a well-known player in this segment for a very long time.

The OnePlus brand is more valuable than any other Chinese smartphone brand in India. Interestingly, it does not enjoy the same status anywhere else.

This is why I think Oppo let OnePlus exclusively continue with flagship devices, while it took a backseat with the affordable premium Reno lineup. But with the launch of Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus, this long-running strategy seems to be ending.

Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus

The Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus clearly acts as an alternative to the OnePlus 11. Though both phones cost about the same, they are different from each other in many ways.

There are some features like a periscope camera that can be only found on the Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus at this price. These features make it stand out, not only from the OnePlus 11 but also from other flagships that are more expensive.

Is this truly the start of a new strategy by Oppo and will it succeed? Only time will tell. But I really hope it does, as more options spice up the competition and benefit consumers.

Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus excels in its core features

Just like its predecessors, the Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus is marketed as a ‘Portrait Expert’. I wasn’t sold on the idea with previous devices as they lacked telephoto cameras. But the new gen phone changes everything.

The Reno 10 Pro Plus arrives with a 3x periscope camera. The zoom lens uses a 64MP Omnivision OV64B sensor. Oppo has used this very same sensor on several of its devices, like Reno 6 Pro 5G, Reno 6 5G, Oppo F21 Pro, and more.

With years of experience in tuning this sensor, the company has managed to develop a very good portrait algorithm for the Reno 10 Pro Plus. You get nice dramatic portrait shots along with an option to change the aperture if required after the pictures are taken.

This 3x periscope camera also supports up to 120x digital zoom. But realistically speaking, only up to 40x zoom under good lighting is somewhat usable. It is worth noting that you get impressive details even in 20x when there is enough light.

By default, the camera gives you four viewing angles – 0.6x, 1x, 3x, and 6x. You should probably stick with them if you want the best out of the handset.

The portrait excellency even extends to the front camera. The smartphone uses the tried and tested 32MP Sony IM709 sensor with autofocus.

The main 50MP Sony IMX890 is no slouch either. However, primary cameras are generally good on handsets in this price range. The 8MP Sony IMX355 ultra-wide camera also performs well under good lighting.

Further, unlike the previous Renos in India, the new one is run by a respectable Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset. It easily handles everything you throw at it, including games but with some exceptions.

Also, it sports a 1.5K display which is sharper than regular 1080 panels. The curved screen is capable of displaying true-to-life colors if you use the appropriate color profile. It even supports HDR image viewing in Gallery and it really adds up to the experience.

As with any Reno-branded handset, the Reno 10 Pro Plus feels comfortable to hold. The weight of the product is equally distributed and it does not feel heavy in a particular location. I don’t mind the plastic frame as it not only feels strong but helps in keeping the weight lower.

Finally, thanks to 100W charging support, the device’s battery can be filled in about 30 minutes or less. Just a few minutes of charging is enough when you are in a hurry.

Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus could have been better in these aspects

Like any other product, the Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus is not perfect. There are many things that I wish it did better.

Though I love the design and in-hand feel of the phone, I am not impressed by the haptics. This takes away the soul of the handset. The vibration motor is not strong enough like on the more expensive Find X series.

For some reason, the device does not support video recording from ultra-wide and periscope cameras. I hope Oppo enables it via software update. Also, the video recording from the front camera is capped at 1080p 30fps.

The phone is equipped with good dual stereo speakers with the earpiece acting as the secondary unit. But you have to max out the volume for the speakers to get sufficiently loud.

Further, as much as I love the cameras on the device, they have their flaws. I enjoyed clicking portraits of my nephew but as a kid, he moves a lot. The shutter speed isn’t fast enough, so I have more blurry pictures of him than perfect shots. The shutter speed gets even worse when the environment becomes darker.

Additionally, the periscope camera cannot be used in low light. The phone falls back to the main sensor automatically. So you end up getting oversharpened and less detailed zoomed-in shots.

Despite supporting extreme zoom levels, the device does not come with a ‘moon mode’. I was able to get the moon in frame easily at just 40x but there’s no onboard processing to improve the shot.

I had no issue with the software as I consider ColorOS to be one of the best Android skins on the market. But I was taken aback by noticing the controversial ‘Enhanced Intelligent Services’ turned on by default.

Consumers must have the right to enable or disable sharing their critical data with brands. This is not even acceptable on budget smartphones, let alone flagships.

Last but not least, the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset inside the handset is not tuned properly. Benchmarks return lower than usual stability scores. Also, the phone can only last a day or less, especially on 5G.

Some of the aforementioned issues can be fixed via software updates. But when you are paying a premium, you shouldn’t have to wait for updates for a perfect device.

Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus is a solid alternative to OnePlus 11

I expected the Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus to cost ₹49,999 but unfortunately, it is more expensive at ₹54,999. At this price, it is just ₹2,000 cheaper than the OnePlus 11. Still, it’s a good alternative.

The two phones are different from each other. So, they don’t compete with each other. Rather they are targeted at different audiences.

Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus

I would personally go with the Reno over the OnePlus. The versatile camera setup and excellent in-hand feel makes it a better option for me. Also, I am in love with this ‘Glossy Purple’ color.

Since I don’t play games much, I don’t care about sustained performance. But if you do, OnePlus is the one for you.

Either way, I would suggest you experience these smartphones at the stores before making a purchase decision. On paper specs never tell the complete story.
