Animated Meta Avatars can now Replace you in Messenger & Instagram Video Calls

Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook, has announced several exciting updates to Meta Avatars that promise to make them more entertaining, practical, and social than ever before. One of the standout features is the introduction of real-time calling with Meta Avatars. Now, users of Messenger and Instagram can engage in video calls with their avatars, offering a creative alternative to traditional camera-on or camera-off options. Whether you want to appear as a llama or simply hide a bad hair day, this new feature allows for a more immersive and expressive communication experience.

Avatars will also look more similar across different Meta social media platforms

To further liven conversations up, Meta is introducing animated stickers for avatars. Gone are the days of static images. Users can now use dynamic avatar stickers in Instagram and Facebook Stories, Reels, and Messenger and Instagram message threads. From friendly waves to enthusiastic applause, these animated stickers enable users to add more personality and emotion into their virtual interactions.

Meta Avatar

Recognizing that self-expression is often best enjoyed with friends, Meta has made avatar stickers a social activity. Through @Tagging, users can include friends in Facebook Stories, allowing avatars to hang out together in the metaverse. Additionally, users can share social stickers featuring themselves and a single friend in private message threads, shared moments, inside jokes, and a sense of togetherness.

Meta is also streamlining the avatar creation process. By utilizing a live selfie, Facebook and WhatsApp users can now generate suggested avatar options that closely resemble their real-life appearance. Users can then personalize these suggestions to accurately represent themselves. While this feature is currently in testing, Meta aims to refine and improve it over time, making avatar creation easier and faster for all. Users don’t have to put in too much work for the same!

Lastly, Meta has standardized the appearance of avatars across all platforms. Whether in virtual reality or on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, or WhatsApp, avatars will now have consistent proportions, offering a more realistic and visually appealing representation. Users can now confidently showcase their style choices without their avatars’ oversized heads stealing the spotlight.

With these updates, Meta is ensuring that Meta Avatars continue to evolve and enhance the digital experience for its users. By providing more interactive communication options, personalized expressions, and a cohesive avatar appearance, Meta is cementing its commitment to creating a vibrant and engaging metaverse for all.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk Under Investigation for Alleged Misuse of Company Funds

In a recent development, sources from The Wall Street Journal have revealed that electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla is facing a potential investigation into CEO Elon Musk‘s alleged improprieties. Concerns were raised by the company’s board regarding Musk’s suspected use of company funds in the construction of a personal residence near the Austin-area Gigafactory, known internally as “Project 42.” The initiative is said to involve significant purchases of specialized glass, which caught the attention of employees last year. Additionally, several limited liability firms associated with Musk and Tesla executives have acquired substantial amounts of land in the vicinity.

All purchases larger than $120,000 have to be approved by a board committee

According to insiders, designs for the house included a distinctive “twisted hexagon” or a glass cube resembling Apple‘s iconic 5th Avenue store. The plans reportedly encompassed personal spaces such as bedrooms, bathrooms, and a kitchen, indicating a private residence rather than a Tesla-affiliated project.

Elon Musk

As of now, the status and outcome of the investigation remain undisclosed. Notably, Tesla disbanded its public relations department several years ago, and Elon Musk has refrained from commenting on the report. The board’s primary objective is believed to be determining Musk’s involvement and ascertaining whether employee working hours were utilized for the construction of his personal residence. Although Bloomberg had previously reported on the glass order, the existence of the board investigation and the nature of “Project 42” were unknown.

While it is not uncommon for executives to receive perks such as private jets, Tesla maintains a relatively stringent policy in this regard. The company mandates that any expense exceeding $120,000, involving a related party like the CEO, must undergo audit scrutiny by a board committee.

This is not the first instance of a high-profile tech executive facing scrutiny over personal expenses. Meta, previously Facebook, recently investigated departing COO Sheryl Sandberg amid allegations of utilizing company resources for personal purposes such as wedding planning and suppressing negative media coverage involving her ex-partner, Bobby Kotick. However, Musk’s case stands out due to his prominent position as a major CEO.

Elon Musk is also currently entangled in an ongoing battle with the Securities and Exchange Commission relating to his use of social media to disseminate financial information. As the investigation unfolds, the implications for Tesla and Elon Musk could potentially have far-reaching consequences, warranting careful observation by industry analysts and stakeholders alike.

Rivian Stock Surges After Strong Q2 Performance and Short Squeeze

Rivian Automotive, the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has experienced a remarkable turnaround in its stock performance after a period of decline. Since its record-breaking $11.9 billion initial public offering (IPO) in November 2021, Rivian stock (RIVN) had been on a downward trajectory, hitting a low of $12.04 on April 26, 2023. However, recent developments have given the company a much-needed boost.

Rivian Analyst stated that bad times are now behind the company

The turning point came in early July when Rivian announced its outstanding performance in the second quarter of 2023, marking the best quarter in the company’s history. With production figures of 13,992 vehicles and 12,640 deliveries, Rivian reaffirmed its annual production guidance of 50,000 units. These positive results have propelled the stock to a significant increase of almost 90% over the past nine trading sessions. On Monday, Rivian closed at $25.51, nearly double the closing price of $13.45 on June 26.

Rivian

The reaffirmation of delivery goals has also contributed to increased investor confidence, leading to an upgrade in the price target by Wedbush Securities from $25 to $30. Analyst Dan Ives expressed optimism, stating that Rivian has finally turned the corner and that the worst is likely behind them.

While the current stock price remains far below its IPO high, the recent growth indicates a positive trend for Rivian. The surge in stock value can also be attributed in part to a short squeeze, where investors who had bet on the stock price falling are now forced to buy shares to cover their positions. Short interest on Rivian currently sits at 12.34% of the float, leading to short covering as the stock price rises.

Options trading on Rivian has also surged, with 831,000 contracts traded on Monday, twice the average daily volume. Investors have been purchasing “super short-dated calls,” driving further upward momentum for Rivian shares. If the company continues to deliver on its promises and navigate the EV market, stakeholders will most likely monitor its progress and the potential for further stock value appreciation. The company is also in talks of manufacturing an electric bike, we’ll see how that goes as well.

As reported by IT Home on July 12, the United States Trademark and Patent Office (USPTO) released a list confirming that Apple secured a total of 53 patents. That’s a lot of patents!

Apple has always supported seamless synchronization between devices

The newly acquired design patent showcases an innovative approach, reminiscent of the existing iPad with the addition of a deformable shell. Apple’s inventive streak doesn’t stop there. The patent documents also offer a glimpse into other potential iPad designs, which showcases the case’s capability to support a virtual keyboard with gesture detection, such as swipes, pinches, and intricate finger movements.

This breakthrough in iPad design highlights Apple’s commitment to pushing boundaries and reimagining user experiences. By introducing a two-in-one functionality, the tech giant aims to enhance productivity and adaptability, empowering users to effortlessly transition between different modes and scenarios.

Microsoft’s $69 Billion Acquisition of Activision Blizzard is Approved, but Problems have Just Begun

Recent developments in the ongoing acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft have brought both positive and challenging news. The US court has rejected the Federal Trade Commission’s request and approved Microsoft’s $69 billion acquisition, leading to progress in the deal. However, the United Kingdom’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is presenting hurdles for the acquisition, prompting negotiations between Microsoft and the CMA.

Microsoft has previously made commitments to provide new Activision Blizzard Titles for 10 years

Microsoft President Brad Smith announced that the CMA has agreed to enter negotiations with Microsoft regarding the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Microsoft aims to address the concerns raised by regulators and assure the CMA that the acquisition will not pose any issues for the British market. Although Microsoft disagrees with the CMA’s concerns, it is willing to explore ways to amend the transaction to alleviate these concerns.

Microsoft Activision Blizzard

To facilitate the negotiation process, Microsoft, Activision, and the CMA have jointly submitted a request to the Competition Appeals Tribunal, agreeing to suspend litigation in the UK. The parties involved recognize that it is in the public interest to prioritize resolving the issues at hand.

It is anticipated that Microsoft may offer preferential treatment to British players in the realm of cloud gaming based on previous statements made by both parties. With ongoing discussions, Microsoft aims to reach an agreement with the UK Market Regulatory Authority and secure approval for the Activision Blizzard acquisition in the near future.

The UK Competition Authority has experessed its readiness to consider any proposed restructuring deal from Microsoft to address the concerns outlined in their final report. In April, the British CMA initially blocked the transaction, citing potential risks to the emerging cloud gaming market. However, the European Commission approved the deal in May, deeming Microsoft’s concessions on cloud gaming sufficient.

Microsoft has previously made agreements with several cloud gaming service providers worldwide, including commitments to provide games, including Activision Blizzard titles, for at least ten years.

With the current merger agreement set to expire on July 18, Microsoft is eager to push the deal forward. Failure to secure an extension beyond that date could result in a handling fee of $3 billion for Activision Blizzard. The future of the deal hinges on addressing the concerns raised by the CMA and obtaining their approval, which will determine the path forward for Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

Huawei showcases its self-developed AI tech to rival ChatGPT at Cloud Developer Conference

Chinese tech giant Huawei has unveiled its self-developed Artificial Intelligence (AI) model that runs on AI-powered processors. Huawei hopes its latest intervention will provide much-needed computing power capacity in China’s tech firmament. China continues to play catch up with the leading lights in AI technology in the US amidst current sanctions and restrictions.

Huawei

The new Huawei intervention hopes to rival current ChatGPT services. Huawei unveiled the Pangu AI model version 3.0 during the Cloud Developer Conference on July 7 in Dongguan City, China. The Pangu AI model is aimed at industrial applications across a wide field including mines, finance, government, and production. Huawei aims to provide services that help its clients to build and train their own AI models.

The heart of the Pangu 3.0 is the Ascend AI processors and MindSpore AI framework. Huawei says the computing power in China can hardly keep up with the increasing demand for such services. Therefore many companies are expending substantial resources to get Nvidia graphics processing units.

Huawei says it hopes to offer an alternative to the Nvidia graphics option which will also cut significantly the lead times. The company also insists that the Pangu AI model is not a ChatGPT competitor and the solution focuses on enterprise clients. The Huawei announcement is a great relief for China, as companies continue to grapple with a tough US sanction regime and restrictions.

Many exhibitors during the cloud developer conference showcased LLM-powered applications with commercial applications in a wide array of fields. More optics of the new Huawei AI model are expected to be released in the coming weeks.

Samsung 83-inch Class OLED 4K TV officially goes on sale for $5,400

Samsung has just launched a new premium TV model from its 2023 range of OLED TVs. It is the new 83-inch Class OLED TV, which arrives as the top-end and largest variant from its new OLED TV lineup.

Samsung 83-inch Class OLED TV Specifications

For those unaware, the South Korean tech giant had previously announced the S90C and S95C OLED TVs earlier this year. Now, the S90C model is being sold in a new 83-inch variant that retains the QD-OLED panel technology of its smaller siblings. The screen offers a 144Hz refresh rate, 4K resolution, AI-powered HDR, Dolby Atmos, and more. Since the new model is not a part of the S95C, the new huge TV doesn’t feature the design that makes it appear nearly seamless with the wall.

Samsung

But thanks to its tall display, you will still have to shell out an eye-watering premium price tag of 5,400 US Dollars. The 83-inch Class promises to offer “pure blacks, limitless contrast, and vibrant colors.” These are all powered by the Samsung Neural Quantum processor. Furthermore, it still offers a LaserSlim design that makes the bezel appear negligible.

The new TV also comes with the Samsung SolarCell Remote, which can be charged through both artificial and natural light as well as RF waves. This remote does not require any batteries, which helps reduce electronic waste.

Fairphone 3 gets Android 13 update, support extended to 7 years

Every smartphone brand talks about sustainability and what they are doing to save the environment. But their efforts often only go as far as removing the charger from the box. If there is one company that takes the term “sustainability” seriously, it is Fairphone. The Dutch manufacturer is known for offering software support for longer years. In a recent development, the company has announced an Android 13 update for the 4-year-old Fairphone and is also extending its support until 2026.

Fairphone 3 will get updates until 2026

The Fairphone 3 and Fairphone 3+ were launched in 2019 and 2020, respectively. Both phones were initially promised to receive 5 years of major updates, but the company could not deliver Android 12 for the two phones. Fairphone says this was because the Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 chip inside the devices did not support Android 12.

Skipping Android 12 for both models, Fairphone is now releasing Android 13 to them. To make up for the one lost Android update, the Dutch company is extending the software support of the Fairphone 3 and Fairphone 3+ until 2026, meaning a total of 7 years of OS updates.

It is worth noting the Snapdragon 632 SoC in the Fairphone 3 was only supported by Qualcomm up to Android 11. This means that Fairphone will be responsible for developing and releasing any future updates for the phone. It is a significant undertaking, but Fairphone has a good track record of providing long-term software support for its devices.

Fairphone is setting a new standard for long-term software support by offering 7 years of updates for its phones. This is more than any other major smartphone manufacturer, including Samsung, which is regarded as the undisputed king of software updates.
