EU Privacy Concerns Put Brakes on Google Bard AI Launch

The use of artificial intelligence chatbots is growing rapidly. ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, is the current market leader, with Google’s Bard not far behind. This popularity is creating new opportunities for businesses, but it is also raising concerns among regulators and governments. For example, Google has recently delayed the launch of its Bard AI chatbot in the European Union, citing privacy concerns. Here are the details…

Google Working with Regulators to Address Bard AI Concerns

Artificial intelligence use by many people to make their daily tasks easier. However, there are some risks associated with AI, such as the possibility of sensitive information being leaked. For this reason, some companies, such as Samsung and Apple, have recently banned the use of generative AI bots. The European Union is aware of the risks associated with AI and has begun to regulate its use.

Google Bard

Google, which has developed its own AI chatbot called Bard, has delayed the launch of Bard in the European Union until it can comply with the new regulations. The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC), which is the lead data protection authority for Google in the EU, has said that it has not received enough information from Google about how Bard will protect users’ privacy.

The DPC has raised concerns about how Bard will collect and use users’ personal data, including their names, email addresses, and IP addresses. The DPC is also concerned about how Bard will prevent users’ data from being used for unauthorized purposes, such as targeted advertising. Google has said that it is committed to protecting users’ privacy and that it is working with the DPC to address its concerns. However, the company has not yet said when Bard will be available in the EU.

This is not the first time that a major tech company has delayed the launch of an AI product in the EU due to privacy concerns. In March, ChatGPT temporarily banned in Italy after the Italian privacy regulator raised similar concerns. It is not yet known when the tension between Google and the EU will end.

Anbernic RG nano, the Game Boy-like mini retro game console finally goes on sale for $60

The Anbernic RG nano has finally gone on sale as the smallest ever handheld gaming console. This device is a miniature lookalike of the iconic Game Boy and comes with a number of retro games. So let’s have a look.

Anbernic RG nano is small enough to be carried on your keychain ring

With measurements of 2.8 inches x 1.7 inches x 07 inches, the new RG nano is a tiny and compact game console. Since it weighs just 153 grams, you can easily carry it around on your keychain and even toss it in your pockets or handbags. But despite its small form factor, it is still a fully functioning game console that features a D-Pad, action buttons, color display, and even shoulder buttons as well. Notably, this isn’t the first retro handheld gaming console from the company as they even launched the Anbernic RG35XX earlier this year.

Anbernic

The RG nano sports a tiny 1.54 inch IPS LCD panel that has a 240px resolution and is powered by a 1.2GHz ARM Cortex A7 processor. This chipset is paired with 64MB of DDR2 memory and uses a microSD card slot that supports up to 512GB of storage (the company sells only the 64GB or 128GB options). With these specs, it is clear that the console isn’t cutting edge, but for its size, it can run NES, GBA, and even PS1 era games with ease. It runs on a Linux based OS with support for emulators as well.

Other notable features include, built in speakers, a USB Type C port, and a 1,050mAh battery that can last for up to 2.5 hours. For those unaware, Anbernic had first unveiled the mini console back in May 2023, and it is currently available for purchase for a price tag of 66 US Dollars. Although, there is a 6 US Dollar company discount for those that order before June 15. Talking about its design, it is built using aluminum alloy and arrives in multiple color options, like dark purple, blue, and red.

Apple brings in Luxshare & 6 other Chinese suppliers for Vision Pro production

Apple recently unveiled its highly anticipated mixed reality headset dubbed the Vision Pro. This 3,500 US Dollar headset is a first of its kind product from the company. Now, a fresh report has even revealed the suppliers behind the new gadget.

Apple Vision Pro is being build by brand’s AirPods supplier Luxshare

Apple has contracted Luxshare Precision Industry Co as one of its primary suppliers for the Vision Pro. For those unaware, this contract manufacturer is also a major supplier for the AirPods and will even produce the iPhone 15 models. Now, the Cupertino based giant has brought aboard Luxshare and six other Chinese companies to assemble its latest high end gadget, which is the new Vision Pro headset.

Apple

The other six manufacturers in the Apple supply chain includes the likes of Cowell E Holdings that is a camera module maker and Shenzhen Desay Battery Technology, which is providing the lithium batteries and power management system for this product. Notably, this move from Apple also shows the company’s shift to include more Chinese suppliers in its supply chain and its growing connection with the region despite the geopolitical situation surrounding the region.

Although, the iPhone maker’s new mixed reality headset is still primarily being supplied by its Taiwanese suppliers. This includes optical parts maker Largan Precision, Optical lens products manufacturer Genius Electronic Optical, and others. According to Ivan Lam, senior analyst at Counterpoint, “It is evident that Vision Pro’s current suppliers, similar to the structure [of companies] behind the iPhone, are among the world’s top consumer electronics component providers”.

It was initially believed that the S23 FE will not be launching this year, similar to the S22 FE from last year. However, later reports have confirmed its existence, with its launch appeared to be set for late 2023.

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE to launch sometime between July-September

But a new report has hinted that the Galaxy S23 FE will be launching in the third quarter of this year. In other words, we can expect the announcement to be held sometime between July and September 2023. If this news is true, the South Korean tech giant’s latest Fan Edition phone will be arriving a whole quarter ahead of its initial launch timeline. For those unaware, it was previously rumored that the brand will launch the Galaxy S23 FE sometime in Q4 2023.

One of the improvements in the new FE phone is expected to be the 50 megapixel primary camera on the rear, which could be the same sensor as the one found in the Galaxy S22 or Galaxy S23.

Indian girl receives high praise from Apple CEO Tim Cook for EyeTrack app

Asmi Jain, a 20-year-old student from Indore, has emerged as one of the winners of Apple’s Swift challenge at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) this year. Her unique app prototype, called EyeTrack, designed to strengthen eye muscles, caught the attention of Apple CEO Tim Cook. Jain’s accomplishment is being lauded for its potential to make a profound impact on the world.

Asmi Jain

EyeTrack App: Leveraging Augmented Reality to Strengthen Eye Muscles

EyeTrack was born out of Jain’s desire to help her friend’s uncle, who had a left eye misalignment. Utilizing YouTube tutorials, as her university did not offer instruction on Apple’s Swift coding language, Jain was able to design the app. To track eye movements, she incorporated Apple’s ARKit, a software development kit for creating augmented reality experiences.

When asked about her plans to release the app on the Apple App Store, Jain mentioned that it might take some time due to her college assignments. However, she expressed her goal of seeking feedback to ensure the app’s effectiveness and user-friendliness before making it available to the public. Jain also aspires to expand EyeTrack’s capabilities to target other facial muscles, potentially serving as a therapy tool.

During his visit to India earlier this year, Cook met with the country’s innovative iOS developer community and expressed his admiration for their achievements. He commended Jain’s incredible work, recognizing her creativity and ingenuity. Apple increased the number of Swift challenge winners this year to 375, representing more than 30 countries and regions, covering diverse topics such as healthcare, sports, entertainment, and the environment.

Jain’s success exemplifies the opportunities provided by platforms like the Apple Swift challenge, fostering young talent and empowering individuals to create meaningful solutions using cutting-edge technologies. As EyeTrack progresses, it has the potential to positively impact the lives of individuals seeking to improve their eye health.

OpenAI Pushes out Key Update for GPT Model with Reduced Costs for Devs

OpenAI, the renowned artificial intelligence research laboratory that gave the world ChatGPT, has announced a significant update to its language model API. This update includes the introduction of the highly anticipated GPT-4 model and the gpt-3.5-turbo-16k, along with several new features and reduced costs for developers. Language models such as ChatGPT employ a context window that acts as a short-term memory, enabling them to retain input or dialogue content. Increasing the context window size has become a technological race among developers. OpenAI has also been working on a 32,000-token version of GPT-4, although it has yet to be released to the public. For now, the 16,000 token version would be available. This means developers can process approximately 20 pages of text at a time, allowing for more efficient modelling and text generation.

The price of the GPT-3.5 Turbo Model has been lowered by 25%

Alongside the gpt-3.5-turbo-16k, OpenAI has implemented several other notable features. One of these is the introduction of function call functionality in the Chat Completions API. This enhancement enables developers to build chatbots that can call external tools, convert natural language into API calls, or make database queries. It simplifies tasks such as sending emails or executing commands based on user input. OpenAI has also focused on enhancing control over their models. The new gpt-3.5-turbo-0613 includes improved controllability, allowing users to shape the behavior of the language model more reliably.

OpenAI ChatGPT

In addition to these functional improvements, OpenAI has significantly reduced costs for developers. The price of the gpt-3.5-turbo model has been lowered by 25%. This means that developers can now access this model for approximately $0.0015 per 1000 tokens, making it even more affordable and accessible. Furthermore, OpenAI has reduced the price of the “text-embedding-ada-002” model, a technique that enables computers to comprehend words and concepts, by a remarkable 75%. As part of this update, OpenAI will retire some earlier versions of its models starting from September 13. However, developers can continue to utilize these models until that date.

Google Messages receives Homescreen Overhaul in New Update

Google is giving its Messages app a fresh new look with a redesigned homescreen that incorporates key branding elements and enhances user experience. The update removes the familiar navigation drawer and replaces it with a more streamlined approach – possibly for the sake of branding or merely accessibility.

The 4-colour Google Logo takes over the Hamburger button on the Messages Homescreen

One notable change is the replacement of the full-width search bar with a simple magnifying glass icon, reducing clutter and focusing attention on the content. Positioned in the top-left corner, the iconic four-colour “G” logo of Google takes its place, followed by the word “Messages,” ensuring clear branding and easy recognition. The navigation drawer and its hamburger icon, previously used for accessing various options, have been replaced by the account menu. Options like Archived, Spam & blocked, Mark all as read, and Device pairing now reside in this menu, while Your data in Messages, Messages settings, and Help & feedback remain unchanged. The “Choose theme” feature has been relocated to the settings menu.

In terms of search functionality, Google has discarded the “Categories” section in favor of a grid layout. This new design reduces the need for excessive scrolling and offers quick access to categories such as Starred, Images, Videos, Places, Links, Unread, Known, and Unknown.

One of the most intriguing aspects of this redesign is the prominent placement of the Google logo in the top-left corner. It serves as a visual reminder of Google’s commitment to messaging services and its ongoing RCS (Rich Communication Services) campaign. AT&T became the most recent company to switch to Google Jibe’s RCS platform.

As AI slowly becomes a staple in media and entertainment, another interesting piece of information has popped up. Paul McCartney, the legendary member of the Beatles, has announced that the band will be releasing a new single this year with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). Set to mark McCartney’s 81st birthday, this anticipated release has been dubbed the band’s “last song” – a testament to their fantastic legacy.

AI allows users to extract an Artist’s voice to use as a dataset for new Voice Models

Utilizing cutting-edge AI technology, McCartney shared that they have successfully extracted the late John Lennon’s voice and continued work on an unfinished single from the late 1970s. This announcement follows the Beatles’ previous releases of “Free as a Bird” and “Real Love” in the mid-90s, which were also crafted from Lennon’s incomplete compositions.

Advancements in AI have now opened up unprecedented possibilities for artists who are looking to layer new vocals alongside old vocal samples from other artists. With the ability to alter melodies and lyrics after extracting Lennon’s voice, the production team claims to have harnessed the true essence of his artistry, bringing his long-lost work to life.

As speculation mounts among devoted Beatles fans, one particular track has piqued their attention. This track is “Now and Then,” a demo from the late 1970s that was believed to have been sent by John Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono, to McCartney in 1994. “Now and Then” holds great potential as the new single. However, McCartney has revealed that the song was not included in the compilation due to the band’s guitarist, George Harrison not exactly liking the song.

Reflecting on the band’s iconic yet tragic history, it is sad to note that John Lennon was assassinated in 1980, while George Harrison succumbed to cancer in 2001. Today, only McCartney and 83-year-old drummer Ringo Starr remain as the sole surviving members of the globally known band.

Reddit Blackout to Continue in Light of API Change Protests

In a move that has sparked outrage among millions of users, Reddit announced a policy change on May 31, 2023, effectively rendering almost every third-party Reddit app obsolete. Popular apps like Apollo, Reddit is Fun, Narwhal, and BaconReader will no longer be viable options, leaving Reddit’s official mobile app as the sole choice. However, this move by Reddit has been widely criticized for its poor lack of foresight, leading to reduced accessibility for disabled users, and difficulties in moderation.

The 48-hour long shutdowns are being extended to maintain a state of protest

As a response to this policy change, nearly nine thousand subreddits, with a combined reach of hundreds of millions of users, joined forces to express their discontent. These subreddits staged a massive blackout, resulting in extensive media coverage and drawing attention to their concerns, much like an actual protest.

Reddit

Although Reddit made a small concession by reinstating moderator access to the ‘Pushshift’ data-archiving tool, the core concerns of the protesting subreddits remain unaddressed. Despite the blackout and subsequent media attention, Reddit has remained silent since the protest began. Reddit CEO Steve Huffman hosted an AMA on Reddit to address the concerns of users, however, after a few dissatisfactory replies from the team, users gave up, and the AMA was considered a failed opportunity. He downplayed the impact of the blackout, stating that it had not significantly affected revenue and that many subreddits would likely come back online by Wednesday. However, the protesting subreddits maintain that more substantial action is required to resolve their concerns.

Over 300 subreddits have pledged to remain private or inaccessible indefinitely until Reddit provides a satisfactory solution. Notable subreddits such as r/aww, r/music, r/videos, and r/futurology, with millions of subscribers each, are among those leading this effort. Their dedication and support have become the backbone of the movement, and their collective stand is definitely commendable.

While some subreddits initially planned a 48-hour shutdown, it has become evident that a more extended demonstration is required. Various methods of participation have been suggested, including weekly one-day blackouts, sticky announcements by Automod, or altered subreddit rules to encourage protest-themed participation. Each subreddit has the autonomy to choose the approach that best aligns with its community’s preferences.

The standoff between Reddit and its discontented user base will continue, with the protesting subreddits determined to persist until a satisfactory compromise is reached. It will be interesting to see how this turns out, and if the Reddit team decides to come to a reasonable agreement.
