Google opens public access to Bard AI Chatbot: the much-awaited rival of ChatGPT

Google has released the Bard AI Chatbot to the public with limited access. The Chatbot will be available across US and UK. There will be a waiting list for English-language access to Bard as it was previously open to approved testers only.

Google has described Bard as a generative Artificial Intelligence Collaboration that relies on past data to create content. It is different from the Google search engine which only identifies and classifies content for its users as Bard will create original content.

Unlike its rival ChatGPT which just provides a single answer to your questions, Bard will give several versions or drafts of its answer for you to choose from. Once you go through the drafts, you can then ask follow-up questions and if you are still not satisfied with the given options you can again ask the same question to get a different answer from Bard. Bard also comes with an additional cool feature the “Google it” button that will turn your prompt into a search engine-optimized question and direct it to Google Search.

Google has said that Bard can be used to boost your productivity, accelerate your ideas, and fuel your curiosity. The company will roll out the access to Bard in phases and soon plans to launch the Chatbot in other territories with different languages.

What is Google BARD?

Bard which literally means a storyteller, is an experimental AI-powered chatbot made by Google, that can respond to various queries and requests in a conversational manner. The Chatbot is designed to compete with OpenAIs ChatGPT.

Bard uses LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications) which is Google’s language model built on Transformer, a neural network architecture, which is the basis of several generative AI applications seen today.  LaMDA can predict the following words in a series based on the previous ones and can stimulate dialogue in a looser fashion than is typically allowed by task-based responses.

As of now, Google states that Bard is still in its experimental phase and as soon as you log in, you will get the warning message ‘Bard will not always get it right’. Though designed to compete with ChatGPT, the initial version is limited to text with no response to images or audio. Bard cannot be used for advanced tasks like coding but Google is working on these features and will roll out the same in due course.

New leak reveals different dimensions of the yet-to-be-released Sony Xperia 1 V

A new report has indicated that the Sony Xperia 1 V will not come in a more compact setup than its predecessor. The Xperia 1 V had previously been rumored to be smaller than the Xperia 1 IV but the new reports contradict this. The leaked details of the yet-to-be-released Sony flagship included a schematic of the smartphone.

Sony Xperia 1 IV

The Sony Xperia 1 V is expected to be released later this year and Weibo leaker, Zackbuks has hinted that it will not be smaller. The tipster has had a run of bold hits in recent times and he provided a schematic diagram of the flagship. The leaked dimensions of the smartphone are 164.68 x 70.89 x 8.54 which is different from an earlier leak back in February by @onleaks. The original Xperia 1 model measures 167 x 72 x 8.2 mm, with subsequent models slightly smaller. The weights have also varied across the generations of the Xperia 1 with a deviation of around 5g.

Sony Xperia 1 V

The February leak was premised on the information that Sony had overhauled the design of the smartphone with a narrower and thicker chassis. The Xperia 1 V will be slightly thicker than its predecessor but retains a similar height and width.

Sony will likely release the Xperia 1 V in May 2023 and a sequential distribution to other markets could be deployed. There are no official details yet from Sony but we expect the full specs of the Xperia 1 V flagship to surface soon.

Ahead of the release, the brand has teased the smartphone in a dazzling new color variant. Let’s take a closer look.

An image shared by a Xiaomi executive shows the upcoming Redmi Note 12 4G in a sparkling new color. The new color blends various shades such as Blue, Pink, and Gold to create a distinctive and original hue. This innovative colorway sets it apart from the usual range of standard colors and makes the device truly eye-catching.

Apple’s Billion-Dollar Strategy to Conquer the Big Screen

Apple is planning to invest $1 billion annually in producing movies for theatrical release, marking a significant step in its efforts to elevate its Hollywood profile and attract subscribers to its streaming service, Apple TV+. According to anonymous insiders, the tech giant has already approached movie studios to discuss potential partnerships for releasing select titles in theaters this year, as well as additional films in the future.

Apple to Spend $1 Billion a Year on Films to Break Into Cinemas

Among the potential releases are a Martin Scorsese film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, a spy thriller directed by Matthew Vaughn, and a Ridley Scott drama about the French conqueror. Apple aims to showcase these movies in thousands of theaters for at least a month, although final plans have yet to be solidified. The company is also still determining how to distribute the films in theaters, as it currently lacks the internal expertise to simultaneously release movies in cinemas worldwide.

Apple TV+

Apple’s expansion into theaters is a strategic move to raise awareness for its TV+ streaming service. With an estimated 20 to 40 million subscribers, Apple TV+ lags behind competitors like Netflix and Disney+. By turning high-profile projects, such as a Scorsese movie, into cultural events, Apple hopes to grow its subscriber base and outpace rivals.

This billion-dollar investment represents a significant increase from Apple’s previous forays into the movie industry. Most of its earlier original movies were either exclusive to its streaming service or received limited theatrical releases. For instance, the Academy Award-winning film was acquired at the Sundance Film Festival for a record $25 million and distributed simultaneously in theaters and on TV+.

Apple’s plans could provide a much-needed boost to theater chains still struggling to recover from the pandemic. Ticket sales remain about a third below 2019 levels, and major cinema operators like AMC Entertainment and Cineworld Group are facing financial difficulties. These chains have attributed their struggles to a lack of available films from studios, rather than moviegoers’ reluctance to return to theaters.

Update: A Realme representative has denied the rumors of Michael Guo taking over as Realme India’s head. As of now, there is no information available regarding who will be appointed as the new country head for Realme in India.

Original story continues…

Realme has established itself as a highly popular smartphone brand in India, owing in large part to the efforts of its India head Madhav Sheth, who played an important role in building a solid foundation for the company in the country. However, it is being reported that Realme is set to replace Sheth with a top executive from its China-based headquarters.

As per a report by ETTelecom, Madhav Sheth, who served as Realme India head, has reportedly tendered his resignation and has been succeeded by Michael Guo. It is speculated that Sheth may leave the company after the official announcement is made in the near future.

Madhav Sheth resigns

Insiders in the industry have reportedly told Business Standard that the leadership change at Realme may not bode well for the company. As a key member of the company, he is responsible for spearheading strategy development, product engineering, business development, market operations, and brand-building initiatives, among others. He reports directly to the chief executive of the smartphone giant headquartered in Shenzhen, China.

Power Off, Immunity On: How Less Time with Smartphone Benefits Your Health

As smartphone have become a significant part of our daily lives, they have also caused various health issues. However, recent research suggests that using a smartphone for less than 15 minutes a day can actually improve immunity and promote mental health. Here are the details…

Put Your Phone Down! Brushing Less for 15 Minutes a Day Can Improve Immunity

A team of researchers at Swansea University in the United Kingdom conducted a randomized controlled study, which found that reducing social media use by 15 minutes per day improved a person’s overall health and immune function, and reduced loneliness and depression. The study included 50 participants aged 20-25 who completed a series of questionnaires on health, immune function, sleep, and anxiety. The researchers assigned these participants into three groups: No change group, Reduction group, and Reduction + Activity Group.

The results of the study showed that participants in the reduction group experienced significant improvements in immune function, sleep, and depression. Their immune function improved by an average of 15 percent, sleep quality improved by 50 percent, and depressive symptoms decreased by 30 percent. Professor Phil Reid from Swansea University’s School of Psychology emphasized that the data indicated that spending less time on social media can lead to improvements in both physical health and mental health.

Numerous studies have demonstrated that excessive screen time can lead to a range of negative effects on our physical and mental health, increasing the risk of various diseases. Some of these effects include decreased vision, accelerated eye bag production, stiff hand joints, deterioration of gastrointestinal function, increased pressure in the cervical spine, higher likelihood of depression, disturbances of biorhythms, and increased risk of cancer.

Despite the growing evidence of the negative impact of smartphone usage, many people find it challenging to reduce their screen time. To mitigate the harmful effects of smartphones, experts recommend adopting correct postures, maintaining a safe distance from the screen, controlling usage time, avoiding use in dark environments, creating “disabled areas” for smartphone usage, turning off message reminders when resting, and staying away from phones before bedtime.

Microsoft’s GitHub Integrates OpenAI Chat Functions into Copilot X Coding Tool

Microsoft GitHub has announced an upgrade to its widely-used coding assistance tool, Copilot. The new version, dubbed Copilot X, will incorporate OpenAI’s advanced language-generation tools, allowing developers to use chat and voice features for coding assistance. Here are the details…

Microsoft’s GitHub to add OpenAI chat functions to coding tool

Copilot was first previewed in 2021 and saw a wide release last year. The initial product featured a code completion tool that suggested snippets of programming code as developers typed. By November, hundreds of thousands of developers had adopted Copilot, making it a cornerstone of Microsoft’s strategy to deploy assistive technologies across its product range.

Microsoft copilot

The recent success of OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot has inspired other companies to integrate OpenAI’s tools into their products and business strategies, while rivals like Alphabet’s Google are releasing competing chatbot technologies. The new Copilot X aims to enhance the developer experience by offering chat and voice functionality.

GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke demonstrated the tool by asking it how to program a snake game in Python. The chat window can provide explanations of code segments, suggest ways to test the code, and propose fixes for bugs. Developers can also interact with Copilot X using their voice.

In addition to integrating chat and voice features, GitHub will start using OpenAI’s latest language model, GPT-4, in Copilot X.
