Nothing Phone (2) Coming Later This Year, Will Be More Premium Than the Phone (1)

Back in December, Nothing CEO Carl Pei stated that Nothing Phone (2) won’t be launching anytime soon. He added that the brand won’t be like other OEMs on the market that churn out dozens of products a year, and would rather focus on the Phone (1) and the development of its software.

As one can expect, this statement left many fans and potential customers waiting for the Phone (2) disappointed. However, in a recent interview with Inverse, Nothing’s founder clarified that the Phone (2) will indeed be launching in 2023.

Noting
Image source: Zana Latif on Unsplash

Pei confirmed in the interview that the Phone (2) will debut in the US. The launch of the phone is likewise expected for “late 2023.” As we know, Nothing’s philosophy revolves around providing a better experience software-wise than its Android competitors, who usually chase after hardware specifications. But this time, the upcoming Nothing smartphone is said to be a high-end model. This suggests that the phone might cost more than its predecessor did. Pei did not provide any details, however, enough hints were given to confirm that the Phone (2) will have a better spec sheet than its predecessor. “We’re developing a smartphone that’s more premium than the Nothing Phone (1) and software will be a big focus area for us,” Pei said.

When asked if the Phone (2) will compete against flagship devices like the iPhone 14 Pro, and the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, Pei said “I think the market and the industry have moved a lot since those days. For us, the Phone (1)’s spec sheet was pretty usable in terms of user experience,” Pei says. “Mobile chipsets have really improved over the last 7–9 years. That’s why I want to avoid calling the Phone (2) a flagship because that would mean that the Phone (1) was not a flagship. Within our own portfolio of smartphones, the Phone (1) was very much a flagship in terms of the amount of care we put into the product. That’s why I used the word ‘premium’ [to describe the Phone (2)] instead, which signifies that it’s a more premium step up, but it’s still a flagship just like the Phone (1).”

Although the device is still under development, we can expect it to be more expensive, and more decked out spec-wise. No design changes were mentioned in the interview, which could mean that Nothing could be sticking to the semi-transparent body and Glyph interface for the time being.

Sony Announces an Increase in PS5 Availability Just in Time for PSVR2 Launch

There is some good news for all PlayStation fans out there. Sony announced that it should now be easier to get your hands on a PS5 console. After facing supply challenges for the past two years, the company expressed gratitude towards its fans for their understanding during the “unprecedented demand” since the PS5’s launch in November 2020.

Sony PS5

Isabelle Tomatis, VP of brand, hardware, and peripherals at Sony Interactive Entertainment, stated that finding a PS5 console should be a breeze for those looking to get their hands on one. The console will be available at retailers worldwide. For those in the US, UK, France, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg, Sony recommends checking out their own PlayStation Direct store for a variety of PS5 bundle options.

Sony is now taking the opportunity to revamp their marketing strategy for the PS5. A new commercial, reminiscent of a live news channel, has been launched, complete with game references. The company is also collaborating with social media creators and hosting a series of “Live from PS5” promotions. A massive Leviathan Axe from the God of War game has made an appearance next to the London Eye. Fans can expect to see similar marketing pop-ups to come across Europe this week.

This marketing push comes just after the release of the new DualSense Edge controller and ahead of the much-anticipated launch of the PlayStation VR2 on February 22nd, retailing for $549.99. This upgraded VR headset boasts an OLED screen, a 110-degree field of view, 4K HDR support, and the capability to run games at up to 120Hz for an even smoother gaming experience. With over 30 games, including Gran Turismo 7, Resident Evil Village, and Horizon Call of the Mountain, set to release in the launch window, the VR2 will surely be something to watch out for.

iQOO 12 Likely to Support Faster Wired Charging, Wireless Charging

In December 2022, iQOO unveiled the iQOO 11 and iQOO 11 Pro smartphones. The brand is now said to be working on the iQOO 12 lineup. In a new Weibo post, tipster Digital Chat Station (via. TechGoing) has seemingly shared the first details about the standard iQOO 12.

The iQOO 12 series should be launching by mid-2023 in the home market. The lineup will probably consist of the iQOO 12 and 12 Pro. These devices are expected to replace the iQOO 11 and 11 Pro, which supports 120W and 200W fast charging, respectively. The iQOO 11 Pro also supports 50W wireless charging. The iQOO 10 and 10 Pro models also offered the same charging capabilities. Here is a look at what to expect from the iQOO 12 lineup’s charging capabilities.

As can be seen in the screengrab above, the tipster has mentioned the charging capabilities of an upcoming flagship phone. While he has not explicitly mentioned the name of the device, he seems to be talking about the vanilla iQOO 12. He revealed that the device will arrive with an upgraded charging solution.

It seems that the iQOO 12 will support either 120W or 200W wired charging. There is a possibility that it could be somewhere between those numbers, such as 150W or 180W. While the predecessor Pro models supported wireless charging, none of the brand’s previous standard flagship phones did.

iQOO 11

The tipster has said nothing about the other specs of the iQOO 12 or the charging capabilities of the iQOO 12 Pro. In all likelihood, the Pro model will continue to support 200W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. Hopefully, the rumor mill will shed more light on the iQOO 12 series in the coming weeks.

LG to Launch Gram 17 Ultrabooks With RTX 3050 on February 1

LG has finally revealed the much-awaited launch date and price of its latest Gram 17 laptops. The latest iteration of this popular lineup of lightweight laptops will hit the market on February 1st. Earlier this year at the CES 2023, LG also showcased updates to its Gram series, including the Gram 17. The Gram17 now features a variable refresh rate, Dolby Atmos support, and 13th Gen Intel processors. This new series has been dubbed the “LG Gram Pro,” but it will simply be listed as “LG Gram 17” on LG’s website.

LG Gram Laptop

It appears that LG will launch two models. The cheaper variant will feature an NVIDIA RTX 3050 GPU, 16 gigs of RAM, and 1TB SSD. On the other hand, the higher-end variant will feature the same GPU but 32GB RAM and 2TB SSD. Both aforementioned models will be powered by Intel Core i7-1360P processors.

Other Gram models, in 16-inch, 15-inch, and 14-inch sizes, are also set to receive upgrades later this year. These new models, which include the 17Z90R, 16Z90R, 15Z90R, and 14Z90R, aim to provide users with a balance of performance and portability. Equipped with the latest Intel Evo platform, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 GPU, 13th Gen Intel Core processors, LPDDR5 RAM, and Gen4 NVMe SSD, these laptops will be capable of handling demanding tasks with ease, LG claims. Despite their lightweight design, the new Gram laptops boast a large battery capable of providing over 20 hours of video playback on a single charge.

It’s worth noting that the new Gram 17 is different from the iridescent-finished Gram Style and the 16-inch Gram UltraSlim, which were also unveiled at CES earlier this year. While those models may be eye-catching, it’s the tried and tested Gram 17 that may be the more practical and reliable choice for many customers in 2023. The laptops can be purchased via LG’s official website and selected retail outlets post-launch. The base model will be priced at $1999, whereas the higher-end option will be priced at $2299.

OnePlus Nord 3 Design & Specs Leak – Alert Slider, 1.5K Amoled Display, 100W Fast Charging & More

OnePlus will soon be launching multiple new products in the market. On Feb 7, it is set to debut the OnePlus 11 in the global market. China as well as other regions will see the launch of the OnePlus Ace 2/OnePlus 11R on that day. We also got a report stating that internal testing of the OnePlus Nord 3 has begun under the codename “Larry”. And now, more information has surfaced regarding this upcoming mid-ranger.

Schematics and specifications of the upcoming OnePlus Nord 3 have been leaked by Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station. Starting with the design, the device appears to have flat aesthetics that has been quite popular in the mid-range as of late. This means that it features a flat back panel, flat edges, and a flat display. There are two camera islands, one of which holds a single camera, while the other holds two cameras. It also has dual LED flash modules on the back.

OnePlus
OnePlus Nord 3 schematics

Up front, the device appears to have thin and even bezels going around the center punch-hole display. Surprisingly, the schematic reveals that the device will have an Alert Slider. It’s surprising because OnePlus had previously announced that the feature will be reserved for higher-end devices.

Coming to the specifications part, The Nord 3 is said to offer a 6.74-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 1.5K resolution. If this turns out to be true, then the OnePlus Nord 3 will be the highest display resolution device in the Nord lineup to date.

an octa-core MediaTek Dimensity 8200 CPU made using TSMC’s 4nm fabrication technology. The Mali-G610 MC6 GPU is built into the SoC. This is by no means a flagship chipset. However, its performance is quite admirable, making it good enough for the premium-midrange segment.

Details regarding the triple-camera setup are not yet clear, however, the tipster states that we could expect a 64MP Omnivision sensor or a 50MP Sony IMX890 sensor for the primary camera. Going by the previous-gen Nord devices, the main sensor could be accompanied by an 8MP ultra-wide lens and a 2MP camera.

Battery specs are also not confirmed at this moment as the device could use a 4,500mAh or a 5,000mAh unit. What’s interesting is that the device is tipped to come with 100W fast charging, making it the first Nord-branded device to do so. So far, the triple-digit fast charging has been reserved for premium devices by OnePlus. Relatedly, the upcoming OnePlus 11R has been confirmed to come with 100W fast charging. Lastly, we can expect Android 13 on the device, debuting with OxygenOS 13 in global regions and ColorOS 13 in China.

OnePlus Ace 2 visits Geekbench with SD 8+ Gen 2 SoC & 16GB RAM

On February 7, OnePlus will be launching a new smartphone in China called the OnePlus Ace 2. The same device will be launching in the global market on the same date with the OnePlus 11R moniker. We recently saw the OnePlus Ace 2 on the AnTuTu benchmark where it scored 1,149,494 points. Now, the device has also been spotted on Geekbench 5, so let’s check out how it performs in single-core and multi-core heavy tasks.

OnePlus

OnePlus Ace 2 Geekbench

The OnePlus Ace 2 has appeared on Geekbench bearing model number PHK110. Under the hood, the device has an octa-core chipset with a base clock speed of 2.02GHz and a boost clock speed of 3.19GHz. We already know that this is the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip which was the cutting-edge flagship chip before the launch of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in December 2023.

OnePlus

The device is listed to have 16GB RAM and an Android 13-based operating system. Moving on to the benchmark results, the device scores 1336 points in the single-core test and 4178 points in the multi-core test of Geekbench 5. The score is quite impressive, however, not the highest we have seen for a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 device.

Nonetheless, the device should handle every heavy-duty task easily, and considering the AnTuTu scores, gaming should also be a breeze on the smartphone. The TSMC-made SD 8+ Gen 1 chip does well in keeping its temperature under control, so with a decent cooling solution on board, the phone will likely sustain high performance for extended periods of time.

As per previous reports, the device will likely come with a 6.7-inch curved AMOLED display with a 1.5K resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. Under the hood, the device will have the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip paired with up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage.

As for photography, the device will have a triple-camera system on the back with a 50MP main camera with OIS, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, and a 2MP macro sensor. Up front, a 16MP sensor will be present for selfies and video calls. Lastly, the device will have a 5,000mAh battery that supports 100W fast charging.

China’s Indigenous Aircraft C919 will Take its Maiden Passenger Flight in March

China’s indigenous C919 Jetliner manufactured by COMAC (Commercial Aircraft Corp of China) will take its maiden passenger flight in March. This flight will be a major milestone for China as it will mark the beginning of an independent Chinese Aviation Sector.

China Eastern Airlines will be the first carrier to fly the homemade aircraft. While many other domestic airlines are vying for the jetliner, foreign nations like Nigeria have already expressed their interest in the aircraft.

Nigerian Aviation minister stated that the country would consider purchasing the C919 aircraft, once it officially joins the aviation fleet of China.

comac c919
source:comac

Currently, the medium-range aircraft is undergoing its 100-hour mandatory verification flight process which started on December 26. To date, the aircraft has flown to 9 cities and 10 airports, the latest flight being on January 28, from Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport to Nanchang Changbei International Airport in Jiangxi Province.

C919 is expected to complete its verification flight by February, after which it will receive the final validation and inspection results from the Civil Aviation Administration of China. Once approved the aircraft will fly major routes like Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, Kunming, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Shenzhen.

China Eastern Airlines has already trained nine pilots and twenty-four flight attendants to fly the C919. The company has also trained thirteen maintenance personnel including flight engineers to work on the indigenous aircraft and is in the process of training the second batch of personnel for the same.

China is the most populous country and the second-largest aviation market in the world. Hence, it makes sense for the government to leverage the advantage of the domestic aviation market and compete with international players. Once in operation, the C919 Jetliner will put Beijing on the global aviation map and help to end the duopoly of the international aircraft manufacturers Boeing and Airbus.

OnePlus Pad’s Battery and Charging Speed Leaked

After years of making smartphones, OnePlus is ready to get into the tablet business. The brand is confirmed to launch its first-ever tablet globally on February 7 alongside the OnePlus 11 and 11R. The slate’s design and appearance have already been revealed through official teasers and thanks to leaks and rumors, we also have some idea about its specifications. According to Chinese leakster Digital Chat Station, the new OnePlus Pad will arrive with a 4320mAh dual-cell battery unit, making a total of 8640mAh. However, it may officially be labeled as an 8840mAh battery pack. The slate could support 67W fast wired charging.

Xiaomi MS11 EV Live Images Surface Online, Launching Soon?

Xiaomi’s first electric vehicle, the MS11 could well be cruising on public roads in China soon. The tech giant has made significant strides in the development of its EV and images of the car have been seen multiple times.

Xiaomi MS11 EV

Xiaomi is reportedly in the final phases of the development of its first electric car. The car itself had been spotted several times on Chinese roads and during winter testing. A Weibo user has provided some images of the MS11 in its clearest and undisguised form yet. The Xiaomi MS11 is a decent-looking sedan with a sporty four-door design, as per the images. The car bears some striking semblance with the BYD Seal although differences in the headlights are visible.

Xiaomi MS11 EV

The alleged images of the Xiaomi MS11 are in sync with earlier leaked design images of the car. The front and rear bumpers of the new images are similar to the design details leaked earlier. However, Xiaomi at that time stated that the images were an earlier prototype that was discarded. It now remains to be seen whether the MS11 indeed is the car in question. There are no official statements from Xiaomi yet on the issue, so, inferences are speculative at this time.

Xiaomi MS11 EV

The images of the alleged MS11 project a good-looking sedan with a full-length glass roof, large wheels, and Wilwood brakes. It features the Xiaomi logo at the center of the wheels and a LiDAR sensor sits at the top of the windshield. The car has wide rear arches and the passenger cabin narrows slightly at the rear. The tail lights have a similar design to that of the Aston Martin. Overall, the Xiaomi MS11 could be designed as an affordable EV that guarantees comfort.

There are no images yet of the interior of the Xiaomi MS11 but this may change soon. The images reflect a strong and pretty powerful model that will ride on the high Xiaomi standards. There are no release details for the Xiaomi MS11 yet, but that may change shortly, hopefully.

Work begins on China’s First Commercial Spacecraft Launch Centre at Hainan

China has begun the work for its first commercial spacecraft launch site at Wenchang in the southern island province of Hainan.

There is already a state-owned launch center in Hainan called the Wenchang Space Launch Center, which is the fourth launch site in China. The other three are the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center which was the country’s earliest base and where most launches and tests have been conducted to date, Taiyuan Launch Centre which is ideal for launching solar-synchronous satellites and Xichang Satellite Launch Center which is designed mainly to launch powerful thrust rockets and geostationary satellites.

In China, a commercial space center refers to a site invested in and built by an entity other than the Government or Military. Hainan Commercial Space Launch Site program is a joint venture of the Hainan government and three space conglomerates-China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp, China Aerospace Science and Industry Corp, and China Satellite Network Group.

The work on the commercial launch site will be done by an affiliate of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation. The estimated time for completion is one year and the site will be operational from 2024. The new launch site which covers an approximate area of 133 hectares, will have a launch pad, water spraying systems, lightning protection towers, hoisting equipment, transition transportation equipment, diversion devices, a fixed service tower, and more.

Feng Fei, the provincial governor, of Wenchang said that Hainan will make full use of the new launch site to establish an entire space industry chain covering carrier rockets, satellites, and data processing businesses. He further added that the aim was to transform Wenchange into a world-class spaceport.

The Wenchang Launch Center is China’s southernmost launch site and is chosen for its low latitude and closeness to the equator.

If a spacecraft is launched from a site near the Equator, then it gets a natural speed boost caused due to Earth’s rotation, which in turn helps to reduce the cost of fuel and boosters. An optimal launch site needs to be at a coastal area near the equator as it maximizes the use of the earth’s rotational speed and gives an advantage of orientation that helps to arrive quickly at the geostationary orbit.

Major Spacecraft Launch sites like Cape Canaveral, Vandenberg, and Sriharikota are all located near the coast.

China’s Space Industry ranks second in the world just after the US. China National Space Administration (CNSA) has overseen the development of China’s space program which has launched ballistic missiles, artificial satellites, manned space flights, and the famous Tiangong Space station. The ambition of this Asian giant does not stop here as it plans to explore the entire solar system.

With the development of a commercial launch site, China is now stepping into the commercial space era along with the US.

Global Chip Shortage is Over! The Impact of Inflation on the Chip Industry

The global chip shortage has come to an end, as confirmed by the latest reports. The statement might seem overly optimistic, but the declining operation rates at South Korean chip foundries such as Samsung, DB Hitek, Key Foundry, Magnachip, and SK Hynix System IC supports the declaration. The chip industry is reportedly moving towards a more stable supply chain. Here are the details…

South Korean chip foundries to suffer low operation rate up to Q2

The global chip shortage, which began during the pandemic, has affected the entire world. The decrease in production capacity and simultaneous increase in demand resulted in a crisis that lasted for an extended period. Despite manufacturers operating at near full capacity to meet demand, both prices and product availability remained limited.

TSMC

But that era has now come to an end. Recent reports indicate that many manufacturers in South Korea operate at 60-70%. Only Samsung is an exception, operating at 80% capacity. Unfortunately, the impact of global inflation and declining demand for IT products has resulted in a decrease in both chip prices and demand. Consumer electronics companies are also grappling with high inventory levels.

Unfortunately, this situation seems to affect the consumers negatively. People who paid high wages only a few months ago due to product and stock shortages will now buy products at low prices due to rising costs and inflation.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Series Confirmed to Feature a Special Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Chipset

As the buildup to the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S23 series reaches its crescendo, another confirmation has come for the series. The Galaxy S23 will all feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor ahead of the Exynos chipset. A new leak relating to the release has all but confirmed the switch. The leak also indicates that the chip comes with special branding.

Samsung Galaxy S23

There had been complaints about the power efficiency of Samsung’s Exynos chipsets. Some of the reported complaints were overheating and general poor performance. The new leak confirms an earlier rumor that Samsung was using a special version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for the Galaxy S23 lineup. Tipster @rquandt provided some leaked images that revealed the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip inside the S23 series. The chips also sport the For Galaxy branding, indicating their possibly special status.

Qualcomm is offering for the first time a faster and specialized version of its model. This follows the signing of a multi-year partnership to use Snapdragon chips in Galaxy smartphones. It is expected that the partnership will blossom into other models.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra teaser

The special SD 8 Gen 2 chip has higher GPU and CPU clock speeds. This assures the improved performance of the chipset. The gaming performance and other Android tasks will be better achieved with the new chipset. The special Snapdragon chipset will generate more heat and it is not clear how Samsung hopes to overcome that. This is because sustained heat generation could be negatively impactful on the performance of the smartphone. We however expect Samsung to have made the necessary optimizations to overcome the problem.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 lineup will be launched on February 1 at a scheduled Galaxy Unpacked event. Samsung is currently accepting pre-reservations for the flagship lineup. The Galaxy S23 is coming with high expectations as a great Android smartphone.
