News Publishers Should Be Fairly Compensated by Big Tech for Their Content, Says Indian Govt.

In a recent conclave organized by the Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA), the Indian government emphasized the importance of digital platforms for print news publishers. In their statement, they demanded that big tech content aggregators need to pay a fair share of revenues to said digital platforms, owing to an unreasonable imbalance in the dynamic that favors the aggregators themselves.

Media News Publishing

At the inaugural session, Information and Broadcasting Secretary, Apurva Chandra, highlighted the significance of this issue for the future of journalism. Minister of State, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar also emphasized the importance of this issue, highlighting the financial struggles of both the digital and parent print news industries post-Covid. Chandra stated that with the growth of the news industry, it is crucial that digital news platforms receive fair compensation from BIG TECH platforms for their original content.

The Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA) is a group comprising 17 of the nation’s leading news publishers. Chandra further emphasized the significance of ensuring the stability of the traditional news industry. He acknowledged the challenges of keeping up with advancements in technology and the resulting questions about the governance of a large democracy, the changes in the news publishing industry, and their impact on business and citizens’ lives. Expressing his optimism that the DNPA’s conclave will yield valuable suggestions specific to India, he also affirmed that the government would act in the best interest of all.

Reports suggest that it will feature a 12 MP ultra-wide angle lens with a 120-degree field of view and an aperture of f/1.4, as well as a 10 MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, optical image stabilization (OIS), and an aperture of f/2.4. Xiaomi to roll out MIUI 14 Update for Redmi Note 9 Series, Poco M2 series, and More

Last month, Xiaomi unveiled MIUI 14 alongside the Xiaomi 13 series. At the event, the company only revealed the newer devices that will be upgraded to the latest software.

Therefore, users with older handsets are not aware of whether their phones will get an update to the newest version of MIUI. Thankfully, Xiaomiui has been revealing details on a regular basis whenever Xiaomi starts testing software builds for older smartphones.

Over the weekend, the publication found that the users of the Redmi Note 9 series and the Poco M2 series will be treated with MIUI 14. Let’s go through the details.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro Redmi Note 9S Featured
Redmi Note 9 Pro

According to Xiaomiui, the following devices will receive MIUI 14 update.

  • Redmi Note 9
  • Redmi Note 9S
  • Redmi Note 9 Pro
  • Redmi Note 9 Pro Max
  • Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G
  • Redmi 9
  • Redmi 10X 4G
  • Redmi 10X 5G
  • Redmi 10X Pro 5G
  • Poco M2
  • Poco M2 Pro

As you can see, the eligible list also includes handsets, such as Redmi 9 and the China-exclusive Redmi 10X series. But for some reason, the international variants of Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G — Xiaomi Mi 10T Lite 5G and Xiaomi Mi 10i 5G, are not listed.

Most of the phones on the list have already received two MIUI updates and two Android updates. Hence, MIUI 14 will be their third and likely the last MIUI update.

Unfortunately, they will not get an update to Android 13. The MIUI 14 builds for the aforementioned smartphones will be based on Android 12.

Last but not least, MIUI 13 update for these handsets arrived later, however, MIUI 14 update is expected to roll out a bit earlier.

Samsung TV Plus Streaming App Maybe Soon Available on Non-Samsung TVs

Samsung TV Plus is one of the most popular streaming applications, particularly for Samsung TVs. The streaming application allows users to access hundreds of free channels through a single app. The app was made exclusive only to Samsung TV users. However, the app may soon be available to other manufacturers’ TV too. A new piece of information making rounds of the internet has claimed so. This could be great news for Smart TV users as they can access the Samsung TV Plus and its services in their existing Smart TVs.

The company launched Samsung TV Plus in 2015. It’s a free, ad-supported streaming (FAST) service that comes standard with newer Samsung TVs. Like with a typical TV service, the service lets users browse a selection of channels. With the addition of popular shows like Top Gear, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, NCIS, and Chicago Fire in August, Samsung TV Plus offers a very impressive lineup of content for a free app.

Samsung TV Plus

The service also includes a selection of regional and national news channels in addition to channels created by Samsung, like Ride or Drive and The Movie Hub. Along with 220 stations in the US, TV Plus currently offers about 1,600 channels spread over 24 nations. The company is presently debating whether to grant licences to other manufacturers so they can sell the services alongside the TVs. However, there is currently no final words on the topic and we really do not know if this is going to be possible in the coming days or not.

Other TV makers, such as TCL, LG, and Vizio, have their own free streaming services that they compete with, as do other services that aren’t tied to particular TVs, such as Amazon Freevee, Roku, Fox’s Tubi, NBC’s Peacock, and Paramount’s Pluto TV. Although it appears that Samsung also wants to make its TV Plus service a free-floating software, it’s not clear whether other manufacturers will want the app on their TVs or even if the programme will be popular. Let’s wait till any official confirmation comes out before commenting on anything.

We’re interested to see if the other companies will actually use Samsung TV Plus once it becomes available to them, or if they’ll just continue with their own streaming services or none at all. That was all we had at the time. Thank you for reading the article all the way through. Please use the comment area below to share your thoughts about this.

New Google Update Restores Pixel Live Wallpapers Compatibility To Older Devices

Live wallpapers date back to Android 2.0, when most phone batteries were too tiny to sustain them for a long time. Since then, phones (and batteries) have come a long way. Live Wallpapers are animated wallpapers that move subtly in the background. Some live wallpapers are just like videos, while some of them change perspectives based on the phone’s gyroscope.

Last week, Google released a new version of the Pixel Live Wallpapers app that somehow caused the app to lose compatibility with older Pixel devices.

Google Pixel Wallpaper

As the update to version 2.1 of the Pixel Live Wallpapers was rolled out, users reported that they were unable to find the application in the Google Play Store. It was unclear if this was a deliberate move by Google or a technical bug. However, with the release of the next update, Google quickly rectified the situation and restored compatibility to all older Pixel phones.

To change the live wallpaper on your Pixel devices, simply navigate to Settings > Wallpaper & style > Change wallpaper, and you’ll be presented with a variety of options. If you’re on the Pixel 6 or Pixel 7 series, you can add a special touch via the Live Bloom wallpapers. Once you’ve found the perfect live wallpaper for you, tap it to see a preview, and then tap the check mark at the bottom right to apply it to your home and/or lock screen. You can also equip wallpapers from your own image gallery via the Wallpaper & Style application.

Alleged Xiaomi 13 Ultra Appears Online with Chipset and Software Details

Back in December, Xiaomi debuted the Xiaomi 13 series in China. Like the previous years, the company did not release the Ultra model alongside the vanilla and pro variants.

The Xiaomi 13 Ultra was recently tipped to launch in April with up to 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. This smartphone now seems to have been spotted in the IMEI database.

Xiaomi 12S Ultra review 28
Xiaomi 12S Ultra

A mysterious Xiaomi-branded premium smartphone has appeared in the IMEI database. Xiaomiui suggests that this device could be the upcoming Xiaomi 13 Ultra.

The handset bears model numbers 2304FPN6DG (Global) and 2304FPN6DC (China). It is codenamed “Ishtar”. For those unaware, Ishtar is an ancient Mesopotamian goddess of love, war, and fertility.

MIUI codebase shows that the phone will boot MIUI 14 based on Android 13. It also discloses the chipset, which happens to be Qualcomm SM8550 (Snapdragon 8 Gen 2).

Unfortunately, that’s all the information we have on the alleged Xiaomi 13 Ultra through the IMEI database and the MIUI codebase.

Earlier rumors suggest that the device will retain the 50MP Sony IMX989 1-inch camera sensor. The tried and tested main camera will be accompanied by an improved periscope camera. Finally, it will sport a Samsung E6 Super AMOLED display with curved edges.

Officially, Xiaomi had already confirmed that the next-gen Xiaomi Ultra smartphone will be available outside mainland China. Based on the findings discussed above, a global variant does seem to exist.

ViewSonic VG56V Series Monitors Launched With up to 2K Resolution & Pop-up Webcams

Pop-up cameras are a novel concept introduced on smartphones to help remove the front camera cutouts from the displays and to provide a truly immersive experience. The concept was however abandoned soon due to the complex mechanism and miniature machinery needed to operate these popup cameras.

Although pop-up cameras may no longer be popular among Android handsets, ViewSonic now claims that they play an important, if not “revolutionary,” function in larger-screen devices. In order to achieve this, the California-based company has introduced its first-generation “webcam docking” VG56V Series monitors.

ViewSonic’s new pop-up cameras have progressed beyond some early prototypes, with their own “fill-light” LEDs on either side. Additionally, they can be changed in terms of color temperature, and the entire docking camera can be turned 5 degrees in any direction.

These features help the VG56V Series alleviate concerns about improved lighting and angle, which are no longer limited to bloggers. In addition to that, the monitors incorporate their own dual speakers and 2-way microphones, as well as an “industry-leading audio focus function that eliminates unwanted background noise” from either end of a conference connection.

Furthermore, as ViewSonic points out, the VG56V Series has the potential to provide a more secure form of webcam, as users can easily push them back down into the body of these new monitors. The VG2456V and higher-end VG2756V-2K models are the only ones in the series at the moment, with FHD/2MP and 2K/5MP display resolution/docked camera specifications, respectively.

Both models also include general ViewSonic VG-series benefits such as a pivot-, tilt-, swivel-, and height-adjustable stand with a substantial handle and a 100×100 VESA mount. Although the HDMI is 1.4 and the DisplayPort is input-only, they both enable a wide range of ports for “full connectivity,” including 1 90W type-C connection and an RJ-45 jack for gigabit Ethernet.

The VG246V and VG2756V-2K are now listed by ViewSonic in the US online shop for US$358.99 and US$480.99, respectively. The latter, though, is currently available on Amazon for US$459.99.

A Convincing Deepfake of Steve Jobs Announcing “ChatGPT by Apple” has been Created with Only ChatGPT and a Voice Synthesiser

An AI-generated deepfake of Steve Jobs, the late co-founder of Apple, unveiling a “new” AI technology by the company has gone viral on social media platforms like Reddit and YouTube

Video content creator, Synthetic Voices on YouTube, had posted a recent video on their channel, titled “Steve Jobs on ChatGPT: The Future of AI Communication”.

The aforementioned video is posted below:

The 1 minute 27 second audio used in the video was scripted by ChatGPT, the famously known language model developed by Microsoft-backed OpenAI and the voice of Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, was read out by a machine-learning voice synthesizer, elevenlabs.io.

The advanced technology, which uses deep learning algorithms and a voice synthesizer, was able to mimic the speech and mannerisms of the iconic entrepreneur, leaving many onlookers convinced that Steve Jobs had returned from the dead. The incident has raised questions about the capabilities of AI in mimicking human speech and behaviour, as well as the ethics of using such technology to impersonate real individuals.

The viral sensation also has sparked discussions about the future of AI and its potential impact on society. Some have praised the technology for its ability to revolutionize industries and improve our daily lives, while others have raised concerns about the potential for misuse and abuse of the technology.

Internet users are also cautious that with such advancements come ethical concerns, especially when it comes to impersonating real individuals without their consent.

Apple Granted Patent for Crack-resistant Foldable Display Technology

Apple‘s interest in foldable technology is not new, as the company has been granted several patents in recent years related to the technology. The latest patent, which was granted by the US Patent and Trademark Office, describes a foldable display that is designed to be crack-resistant. This could potentially address one of the main concerns with foldable devices, which is their fragility.

aPPLE

The patent with patent number US-20230011092-A1 relates to a display that is made up of multiple layers, including a flexible substrate, a thin-film transistor layer, and a protective layer. The protective layer is designed to prevent cracks from forming in the flexible substrate, which is the part of the display that is most susceptible to damage.

In addition to the crack-resistant display, Apple has also been granted a patent for a self-healing display. This technology would allow the display to recover from small scratches, which is another common issue with foldable devices.

While many experts believe that a foldable iPhone is unlikely, there have been reports of a possible foldable iPad. This would allow Apple to experiment with the technology and refine it before potentially releasing a foldable iPhone. A foldable iPad would also be less risky for the company, as the iPad is a less important product in Apple’s portfolio compared to the iPhone.

With more and more companies entering the foldable market, including Google with its upcoming Pixel Fold, it seems likely that we will see a foldable device from Apple in the near future. This new patent and previous ones on self-healing displays will likely be a key factor in the development of Apple’s foldable device, bringing more durability and reliability to the foldable form factor.

Say Goodbye to Distracting Notifications with Instagram’s ‘Quiet Mode’

Instagram has announced the launch of a new feature called “Quiet Mode,” which aims to help users take a break from the app and reduce anxiety. The feature silences incoming notifications, auto-replies to DMs, and sets your status to ‘In Quiet Mode’ to inform friends that you’re not active on the app at present. The company will also prompt teen users to enable the feature if they’re using the app late at night. Here are the details…

Instagram’s new ‘Quiet Mode’ helps you take a break from the app

The “Quiet Mode” update is one of several changes rolling out, which also include expanded parental control tools and other tools to manage recommendations. This move comes as Instagram works to make its app less of a target for regulators and lawmakers who have been concerned with social media’s potential harms, particularly for teenage users.

Instagram has also added several teen safety features, including those to protect teens’ privacy and reduce unwanted adult contact, limit ad targeting, restrict teens’ access to mature content, and others to help parents monitor and manage their teens’ Instagram use through parental controls.

Quiet Mode feature is not just to introduce a tool that pushes users to take a break, but it focuses on the real-world impacts that accompany trying to step away for a bit from an app that you regularly use, and one where others expect you to be available. For young people in particular, Instagram has grown to become a popular messaging tool.

With Quiet Mode, Instagram users can choose to take a break, to study, to sleep, or to otherwise disengage. When you exit Quiet Mode, the app will offer a summary of what you missed during your downtime to help you get caught up.

Quiet Mode is launching first to users in the U.S., United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and Instagram says it hopes to roll it out to more countries soon. Along with Quiet Mode, Instagram is also rolling out a handful of updates, including the ability for parents to see the accounts their teen has blocked, and better control of what shows up on the app’s Explore page.
