Xiaomi 12 Pro vs Vivo X80 Pro: Specs Comparison

Vivo officially launched the X80 series in the global market: it contains the new flagships of the Chinese giant with the most advanced variant named Vivo X80 Pro. The company decided not to launch the Pro+ variant, at least for now, so the Pro is currently its most advanced flagship for the global market. While waiting for the eventual launch of this flagship in the European market as well (it just debuted in India and Malaysia), it is time to compare it to the best flagships from the other Chinese companies. One of the most interesting ones in the global market is definitely the Xiaomi 12 Pro, packing an amazing specs sheet with almost no compromises. Here is a comparison between the specifications of the Vivo X80 Pro and the Xiaomi 12 Pro.

Xiaomi 12 Pro vs Vivo X80 Pro

Design

Do you prefer having a more interesting look or a better build quality with more protections? If your answer is the former, then opt for the Xiaomi 12 Pro: it has a very elegant look with narrow bezels and a non-invasive camera module placed on its glass back. On the other hand, the Vivo X80 Pro is waterproof and dustproof with the IP68 certification, while the Xiaomi flagship is not. The Vivo one has a bigger camera module, so the phone is definitely less elegant and attractive, but water resistance is considered a very important feature for a flagship. The X80 Pro also comes in color variants with different materials, including a leather version and a ceramic version.

Display

The Vivo X80 Pro and the Xiaomi 12 Pro are very close when it comes to displays. They both come with AMOLED panels sporting a high Quad HD+ resolution of 1440p, an adaptive refresh rate from 1 to 120 Hz, the ability to show up to one billion colors, the HDR10+ certification, and very high brightness. Among the display specifications of the Xiaomi 12 Pro, there is Dolby Vision, while the Vivo X80 Pro adds the LTPO 3.0 technology providing lower energy consumption, as well as an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint reader instead of an optical one. Unfortunately, the Vivo X80 Pro lacks stereo speakers, while the Xiaomi flagship comes with great Harman Kardon stereo speakers.

Specs & Software

The performance level provided by the Vivo X80 Pro and the Xiaomi 12 Pro is more or less the same because they come with the same hardware. They are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 mobile platform built at 4 nm and running at a max frequency of 3 GHz, paired with up to 12 GB of RAM and UFS 3.1 internal storage. With the Vivo X80 Pro, you can get more native storage: up to 512 GB, but it does not impact performance. What is really different is the software: they are both based on Android 12, but the Xiaomi 12 Pro has MIUI installed, while the X80 Pro comes with either OriginOS or Funtouch OS depending on the market. Note that, in China, the X80 Pro also comes in a variant powered by the Dimensity 9000 mobile platform.

Camera

If you are looking for a more advanced camera phone, then you should opt for the Vivo X80 Pro without thinking twice. First of all, it has a better main camera with a brighter f/1.6 aperture and laser autofocus. It also comes with a periscope sensor supporting OIS and 5x optical zoom, while the Xiaomi 12 Pro lacks a periscope camera. The Xiaomi flagship has a better 50 MP ultrawide camera and even a better telephoto camera, but it stops at 2x optical zoom. So there is no doubt about which one is the best camera phone here.

Battery

The batteries of these two phones are not above-average but they are able to provide a more than sufficient battery life. Given the marginal difference between their capacities and their similar components, these two batteries should provide a similar battery life. But the Xiaomi 12 Pro is able to charge quicker thanks to 120W fast charging.

Price

The starting price of the Xiaomi 12 Pro in China roughly translates into €870, while you need at least $909 or €847 for the Vivo X80 Pro. So which phone is the best one? Well, the Vivo X80 Pro looks a bit more interesting because it has a superior camera department: thanks to the periscope camera, you get better zoom capabilities, and the main camera should provide better quality and stabilization. The Xiaomi 12 Pro supports a faster charging technology and more advanced software, so it has its pros, but the camera has a higher value if compared to the rest. Which one would you pick?

Xiaomi 12 Pro vs Vivo X80 Pro: PRO and CONS

Xiaomi 12 Pro

PRO

  • Wider availability
  • Better ultrawide sensor
  • Faster charging

OnePlus 10 Pro finally gets the taste of the May 2022 security update

OnePlus is a good brand and it offers top-notch flagship smartphones. Now that we’ve stated the obvious, it is perhaps useful to also mention that the company is not very good with software updates. OnePlus only provides bi-monthly updates and the updates are not even for the current month. While brands like Samsung have already started releasing the June security patch, the BBK-owned company has now rolled out the May security patch for the OnePlus 10 Pro.

OnePlus 10 Pro

OnePlus has started releasing OxygenOS A.14 to the OnePlus 10 Pro. The new build fixes several bugs and existing issues such as the music playback issue with the Bluetooth car kit and disturbance issue in audio recordings. The latest firmware also addresses the overexposed HDR photos and phone call quality issue.

Here’s the official changelog:

  • System
    • [Improved] system stability.
    • [Fixed] an issue where music playback would stutter when your phone was connected to a Bluetooth car kit.
    • [Fixed] a noise issue that might occur when you record audio.
    • [Updated] Android security patch to 2022.05
  • Camera
    • [Fixed] an issue where the HDR photos might be overexposed in some cases.
  • Network
    • [Optimized] the phone call stability.

The OTA update is initially being rolled to only the OnePlus 10 Pro units in India with the version number NE2211_11.A.14. The company had seeded the A.14 build of the update but then it pulled it back for reasons unknown to us. However, the OEM has now released a newer A.14 build.

The latest update is being released in phases, and it will only show up to only a handful of 10 Pro users initially. A wider rollout should start in the coming days, with the update eventually also making its way to the European and North American variants.

Apple AirPods Pro 2 charging case will retain Lightning port: Kuo

While we had reported on rumors Apple planning on finally shifting some of its product line to support USB Type C port, it appears that the next gen AirPods Pro 2 will not be one of them and will retain the dated Lightning port.

Apple

In a series of new tweets, known analyst Ming Chi-Kuo stated that the brand will not include a USB C port on its highly anticipated second generation AirPods Pro. Kuo had previously stated that the Cupertino based giant will be moving a number of its products like the AirPods Pro to USB Type C format. However, the upcoming model won’t be making the shift as of yet. In other words, future iterations of Apple’s hearable products might be the first to move away from the Lightning port.

As of right now, the company is believed to be testing USB C ports for its iPhone 15 lineup. Apart from smartphones, it is also planning on eventually shifting its MagSafe charger, Mac keyboards and mouse to the USB standards. All of these currently have the Lightning port. The analyst added that “I predict the charging case of ‌AirPods Pro‌ 2 will still support Lightning, not USB C.” As of right now, the entire AirPods lineup, including the top end AirPods Max, feature the Lightning port.

Apple

For those unaware, the AirPods Pro 2 will be the first successor to the popular AirPods Pro that the iPhone maker had launched back in 2019. It is rumored to get rid of the stem design, in favor of an all ear design similar to the Beats Fit Pro. The earbuds will also apparently offer various health related features as well as a new an improved charging case and enhanced audio quality.

Apple iPhones are most vulnerable to hacking when powered off

While iPhones are typically seen as one of the more secure smartphones in the market by many consumers, it appears that the Apple device is still quite prone to hacking. This is apparently true especially when they are turned off.

Apple

According to a research report from Technical University of Darmstadt, the iPhones are the most vulnerable to hackers when they are switched off. The primary reason for this is due to how it handles its various wireless networking technologies. When an iPhone is switched off, most wireless chips, like Bluetooth, NFC (Near Field Communications), and UWB (Ultra Wideband) are still running up to 24 hours. Although, this is not some bug and does serve a crucial purpose as well.

The Cupertino based giant offers the Find My network function on their products, which helps in locating Apple owners’ products when they are lost or possibly even stolen. This also lets you still have access to items like credit cards, student passes, and digital keys as well. But unfortunately, this feature is a double edged sword since these wireless chips have direct access to the secure elements. In other words, it could be potentially exploited by hackers to install malware on the iPhones even when the iOS system is not running.

Apple

These wireless chips remain active in a Low Power Mode (LPM). However, this LPM support is implemented on a hardware level. So, this can not be simply fixed via an OTA software update. The researchers conducted a security analysis of LPM features introduced with iOS 15 and found that Bluetooth LPM firmware can be modified to run malware on the iPhone. This enables hackers to have system level access to track someone’s location or run new features on their phone. Fortunately for many, this mostly affects jailbroken iPhones. Although, the security hole might still be used as spyware to target people.

Apple iPhone 14 will be costlier than iPhone 13 due to a new Selfie Camera: Report

Apple is gearing up to launch its iPhone 14 series of smartphones later this year. However, it seems that the next generation of iPhones will be costlier than its predecessor, the iPhone 13 series.

According to an ETNews report, the Cupertino based giant may plan on raising the prices for the upcoming iPhone lineup due to a change in one of its components. Apparently, the new iPhone 14 will have an improved front facing camera, however, this new selfie shooter will reportedly be 3x more expensive than the ones used on the iPhone 13. In other words, it won’t be surprising if we see a rise in the price tag of the iPhone 14 family.

Notably, this would also mark the first time that Apple has installed a South Korean sourced product for its selfie camera, since the brand is planning to source these components from LG Innotek. For those unaware, a supplier from China and Japan’s Sharp have been the main suppliers of front facing camera parts. These sensors usually cost a third of the rear facing camera module. But with its latest iPhone 14 series, it seems that the company is planning to bring about major changes to the front facing camera.

iPhone 13

Through this new change, the selfie shooter on new iPhones will feature advanced functions like autofocus. Although, the only downside is the rise in overall cost of the handset. As of right now, this is still just an unconfirmed report, so take this news with a pinch of salt for now and stick around for more updates regarding this matter.
