Samsung to supply OLED displays for Apple iPads & MacBooks: Report

Samsung is planning on setting up a new production line in its home market of South Korea which will focus on producing larger OLED panels that will be used in tablets and notebooks. Apparently, these displays will then be supplied to Apple.

Samsung

According to TheElec, the South Korean company will be supplying OLED screens from this site to the Cupertino based giant for its next gen iPads and MacBooks. Notably, this news is in line with a previous report, which suggested that the iPad Pro will finally be moving to support OLED displays in 2024. Although, Samsung has initially believed to make these display panels from one of its existing lines.

But now, the new report suggests that the company’s upcoming production line will be located at a different factory and will be capable of making OLED displays for notebooks. In other words, future MacBook Pro’s display will be an OLED panel that is supplied by Samsung. This model is rumored to launch sometime by 2025 or later. Recently, Apple has been shifting its iPad and MacBook lineup to feature mini LED screens.

Samsung

So, the OLED will be the next step after this transition. For those unaware, OLED panels feature self emitting pixels and do not require backlighting like the mini LED panels. Meaning, this would help in improving contrast ratio and enables better battery life on future iPad and MacBook models. As of right now, the latest iPhone and Apple Watch lineup already uses OLED panels. So it was only a matter of time till other products also feature the same display tech.

Samsung to reportedly launch a cheaper Galaxy A-series foldable smartphone

Samsung has been dominating the foldable smartphone market with multiple devices already available for purchase. The South Korean giant has decided to double down on this new form factor to increase its lead in the market.

While the company is gearing up to launch the next-generation Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip phones in the market, a new report hints that Samsung could also introduce a cheaper foldable smartphone in the coming years.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 Featured 001

As per the report coming from tipster @chunvn8888 on Twitter, Samsung is working on a cheaper foldable smartphone that will be launched in the market as a part of the company’s Galaxy A-series. However, the smartphone isn’t getting launched anytime soon and is speculated to go official sometime in 2024 or 2025.

With new models of the foldable smartphone getting launched, the pricing is gradually decreasing and in a couple of years, it will be possible for Samsung to introduce a budget foldable smartphone in the market.

It remains to be seen which form factor the South Korean giant goes with for the Galaxy A-series foldable device — book-like fold found on the Galaxy Z Fold lineup or the clamshell fold found on the Galaxy Z Flip series.

The demand for foldable smartphones has been steeply rising. A report from Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) reveals that the shipment of foldable smartphones in the first quarter of this year increased by 571 percent year-on-year with 2.22 million units shipped and Samsung continues to dominate the market with 74 percent market share.

iQOO 10 Pro may land with extreme 200W Wired and 65W Wireless Fast Charging Support

In recent years, Vivo has focused a lot on boosting the charging speed of its phones. The company recently launched the iQOO 9 which features a 120W fast charging speed and can be recharged fully from 0 to 100% in just about 18 minutes. But it seems like 120W wasn’t enough for the company, there are now rumors that the upcoming Vivo iQOO 10 Pro will come with absolutely crazy 200W Wired and 65W Wireless Fast Charging Support.

With a post on the Chinese blogging site Weibo, reliable tipster Digital Chat Station has revealed some interesting details about the charging speed of the forthcoming iQOO flagship. According to the tipster, iQOO 10 Pro will come with 200W fast wired charging and an adapter with 20V/10A support. The charger is said to have model number V200100L0B0-CN.

IQOO 9 PRO review featured 3
IQOO 9 PRO

The tipster further revealed that the handset will have 65W fast wireless charging. All in all, the phone is going to push wired and wireless charging speeds to a limit. As mentioned above, its predecessor came with 120W wired charging and 50W wireless charging on top.

The battery capacity of the smartphone is yet to be known, we expect it to feature a 4000mAh that will charge 100% in around 10-12 minutes. However, don’t expect the phone to last very long because a fast-charging phone’s battery threatens to drain before the end of the day. Also, be ready to see a particularly large charging brick with the phone.

Now that smartphone brands have normalized super-fast charging, it’s worth asking whether it’s safe or not. We already know that fast charging comes with an increased risk of overheating and corresponding hazards. Despite all the additional safety mechanisms implemented, the risk still persists.

TCL Huaxing introduces new curved screen technology for smartphones

TCL Huaxing, a China-based manufacturer, has announced its two new curved screen technologies which include waterfall screen hyperbolic technology and equal-gauss four-curved surface technology.

In the Waterfall Screen Hyperbolic Technology, the curved screen with a certain curvature mainly realizes the screen bending through the OLED panel. It is increased to nearly 90-degree to form a waterfall-like bend. It is said to visually hide the middle frame of the phone and the horizontal content will no longer be subject to any display restrictions.

TCL Curved Display Technology

The company adds that the bilateral curvature of the screen can reach 88-degree. Also, unlike the conventional 60-degree hyperbolic screen, the side curvature of this one can reach nearly 90-degree.

On the other hand, the four-curved technology is based on hyperboloid technology, which adds curved glass at the upper and lower ends on the basis of the curvature of the left and right screens of the hyperboloid screen.

TCL Curved Display Technology

It comes with the advantage of a higher appearance, better visual effect, and better hand experience. The curved design of the radian is conducive to holding and helps to improve the experience of horizontal cross-screen operation under large-size screens.

The company abandons the traditional four-curved surface design with large rounded corners and achieves the effect of the same width of the front view frame through the four-corner spherical design and reduces the corner radius from 10mm to 5mm.

TCL Huaxing completed the technical development of the 88-degree waterfall screen in the month of March this year. Using simulation and experiments, further advanced verification of materials and processes has been carried out to achieve the industry’s first WQHD LTPO, 88-degree waterfall screen mass production capacity.

Motorola smartphones reportedly at risk of hacking with chip-level vulnerability

Unisoc, a China-based chip manufacturer, has been able to take advantage of the opportunity presented by the global chip shortage and is now aiming to replace MediaTek in the budget smartphones segment as the Taiwan-based company is focusing on capturing the premium market.

With such a rise, the company also goes through stricter scrutiny. While some of the company’s older chips were marked as a threat vector, now another vulnerability has been found that explicitly affects a Unisoc chip found in three Motorola devices.

Moto G20 Sky Blue

According to the report from Checkpoint Research, the Unisoc Tiger T700 chip, which powers the Motorola Moto G20, E30, and E40 smartphones, has been found to have a vulnerability when the cellular modem attempts to connect to an LTE network.

It basically omits the check to make sure that the modem’s connection handler is reading a valid IMSI or similar subscriber ID. When the handler reads a zero-digit field, a stack overflow occurs which can be exploited for a denial of service attack or for remote code execution, blocking the user from the LTE network.

Checkpoint Research notified Unisoc about this last month and the company evaluated it to be of critical risk with a 9.4 out of 10 ratings and promptly patched the issue. Google may pass the patch onto users soon, likely with the new Android security bulletin.

There haven’t been any reports of this flaw getting exploited but this is still a large problem, especially because most Unisoc processors are used in budget smartphones that rarely get new software updates.

Apple MacBook Air 2022 may not be offered in multiple new color options

Apple is expected to announce its new MacBook Air at WWDC. Rumors have hinted that the device could come with multiple new color options similar to the one that the company is offering for the 24-inch iMac.

Now, a new report coming from Mark Gurman claims that there won’t be any new color options for the new MacBook Air. Instead, it will continue to be offered in the standard Space Gray, Silver, and Gold color options.

MacBook Air 2021 render

He further adds that the reports about multiple color options are likely to be “exaggerated” and there could be only the typical MacBook color options, in addition to the gold color which could be more of a champagne or a new blue option.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also claimed that Apple could introduce the new MacBook Air in multiple color options but he has not provided any specific details. Rumors also indicate that the upcoming device will feature off-white bezels and an off-white keyboard, similar to the 24-inch ‌iMac‌ design.

There are conflicting reports about the processor that will power the upcoming MacBook Air laptop. While it should be the M2 processor, as some reports have claimed is the case, there are a few reports that indicate Apple opting to use the old M1 chip for the new MacBook Air because of the supply chain issues.

GoGo A1 electric conversion kit for the Hero Splendor bike now on sale in India

Indian firm GoGo A1 in April received the approval of the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) for a conversion kit that transforms the Hero Splendor bike into an electric bike. The GoGo A1 electric conversion kit has now gone on sale in India via the company’s website. The kit starts at Rs. 37,700 (~$485) while the battery pack is priced at Rs. 65,606 (~$845) with the charging adapter.GoGo A1

India is rapidly making progress in its plans to phase out internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in the country. A few initiatives have seen the development of electric conversion kits that will transform ICE vehicles into electric-powered models. The outlook for the conversion kits is expected to grow and Hero Splendor is keying into the process. The Hero Splendor Electric GoGo A1 conversion kit has now added the ARAI certification to its previous regulatory endorsements.

The kit contains a 2 kW electric motor, mounted on the rear wheel hub fed by a 2.8 kWh battery pack, with a regenerative braking system. The setup also includes a DC-DC converter, new accelerator wiring, a key switch with controller box, and a new swingarm.

The conversion will be carried out at GoGo A1’s installation workshops in 36 RTO locations in India. Customers will be able to get insurance for the converted motorbike after some documentation at the local RTO. A converted bike is issued a new green numberplate although the registration number will remain unchanged.Hero Splendor Electric GoGo A1 Conversion Kit

There is no doubt that this conversion kit will come in very useful in India considering the popularity of the Hero Splendor in India. However, the price of the battery pack may be a serious drawback considering that there are e-scooters available for the final price you’ll have to cough out for the entire conversion. The company says the battery can deliver a range of 151km on a full charge and you get to retain the solid frame and much of the design of the Splendor, making it a potentially worthwhile project.

Electric bikes have been on the wrong end of the news in India in recent weeks. That may have an impact on the success of this product but we can’t be so sure about that.
