Samsung records all-time high $232.43 billion revenue in 2021

Samsung today released the financial results for Q4 2021 and all of last year, reporting KRW 279.6 trillion (~$232.43 billion) in revenue, which is an all-time high, and an operating profit of KRW 51.63 billion (~$42.92 billion). This was mainly thanks to strong semiconductor sales and good smartphone shipments.

For the fourth quarter of 2021, the South Korean company reported that its revenue touched KRW 76.57 trillion (~$63.64 billion), while the operating profit stood at KRW 13.87 trillion (~$11.52 billion).

The December quarter revenue growth was mostly driven by improved sales of its premium smartphones, including foldables, as well as TVs and home goods. The operating profit declined slightly compared to Q3 2021 due to special bonus pay for employees but was still higher than that of Q4 2020.

Samsung’s memory business saw a decline in earnings due to a fall in prices, the company reported. But this was made up for by the foundry business that posted a new quarterly revenue record, although profitability took a hit due to costs associated with “ramping up advanced process nodes.”

Samsung Display’s revenue rose for small-sized OLEDs, but losses increased in the large-sized display segment due to declining LCD prices and increased manufacturing costs for QD-OLED panels. However, mobile displays are expected to deliver improved results year-on-year, driven by new smartphone releases and an expansion of the foldable market.

The company aims to be the first foundry to adopt the 1st generation gate-all-around (GAA) process. Mass production of such 3nm chips is scheduled for the first half of 2022.

A new Realme Power Bank with 33W fast charging support is coming soon to India

Back in July 2020, Realme launched a power bank with 30W fast charging support in India. This accessory is officially called ‘realme 30W Dart Charge 10000mAh Power Bank’. One and a half years later, details about the possible successor of this product emerge.

Realme 30W Dart Charge 10000mAh Power Bank
Realme 30W Dart Charge 10000mAh Power Bank

According to Twitter user Yash (@i_hsay), a new Realme power bank with model number RTX2109 has been certified by BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards). This means the product may release in India.

According to the accessory’s TÜV Rheinland certification, it will have support for up to 33W input as well as output. The battery pack will be also able to output current at 15W, 27W, and 30W.

Going by the information available, this upcoming power bank could be the successor of the Realme 30W Dart Charge 10000mAh Power Bank. Therefore, we expect it to have at least 10,000mAh capacity.

Unfortunately, we don’t have any more detail on this accessory. But we think that it will have USB Type-C and USB Type-A ports, in addition to support for multiple charging protocols like USB PD (Power Delivery), VOOC, Warp, Dart, and Qualcomm QC (Quick Charge).

Finally, the power bank may hit the markets in multiple colors with unique patterns in a typical Realme fashion.

Tesla Cybertruck production delayed to 2023: Elon Musk

Earlier this week, Elon Musk, the CEO and Founder of Tesla, has just announced that the highly anticipated Cybertruck has been delayed. Now, the vehicle will be launching sometime next year.

Samsung

The Cybertruck from the American electric vehicle manufacturer was rumored to face a launch delay, and now, the brand’s exec has officially confirmed it. Notably, the news also arrives as the carmaker shared its quarterly report revenue and delivery details that showcased more than 50 percent rise of its EV shipments, despite the ongoing shortages in the supply chain. For those unaware, the futuristic Cybertruck was first unveiled back in 2019.

Since then, the company had to delay its production to late 2021, which got further pushed back to late 2022. And now, its production has been postponed for the third time. This also means 2023 will be a big year for Tesla, who will be launching its Cybertruck, Semi, Roadster, and even its humanoid robot next year. Musk stated that “We will not be introducing new vehicle models this year. It would not make any sense because we’ll still be parts constrained.”

He further explained that unveiling new models “would then require a bunch of attention and resources on that increased complexity of the additional product, resulting in fewer vehicles actually being delivered this year.” Musk said that he hopes to manufacture around 250,000 Cybertrucks annually, however, this target is suffering from various hurdles owing to a number of new technologies being introduced. He reassured that “Batteries will probably not be the limiting factor in Cybertruck production,” rather, “I worry more about like how do we make the Cybertruck affordable despite having awesome technology.”

Apple has “poached” Xbox engineers to build its own gaming console: Rumor

A new rumor has just surfaced about Apple and it hints at some of its future plans. The company is apparently eyeing the video gaming console market, and has apparently even tried to bring in engineers from Microsoft Xbox.

Apple
Microsoft Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X

The news arrives from the latest podcast on Xbox Two on YouTube. In the latest episode, Windows Central writer Jez Corden shared the interesting information. He stated that the source isn’t quite reliable and he doesn’t have any particular evidence or documentation to back it as of right now. However, if the rumor is even remotely true, it is big news within the gaming industry.

Corden stated that “I’ve been hearing for a while that Apple has been poaching Xbox engineers to make its own console. I’ve heard that for ages, that Apple was exploring making a video game console, and I don’t know if it’s going to be a VR play or a metaverse thing or something like that, but some of the engineers that Apple’s poached from Microsoft were because they wanted to explore making their own console.” Keep in mind, the Cupertino based giant is known for canceling big projects, so its entirely possible that we may never see an Apple branded gaming console.

Apple

It is also reasonable to believe that a console was planned in the past and could already have been cancelled as well. Although, the iPhone maker has been raising its focus in gaming, with its Apple Arcade that are playable on its TV. So, the brand at least has some experience in a console like product. Unfortunately, this is still an unconfirmed report, so take it with a pinch of salt for now and stay tuned for more updates.

OPPO surprises Reno5, Reno6 users with Android 12 update

Last week, reported that OPPO had finished the ColorOS 12 stable rollout for January 2022. However, just a few days later, the company has proved us wrong. Because it has now started rolling out the update for two more devices that weren’t supposed to receive it this month. These phones got access to beta builds ahead of Christmas.

OPPO Reno 5 Marvel Edition Featured A
OPPO Reno5 Marvel Edition

OPPO has begun to seed the Android 12-based ColorOS 12 stable update for OPPO Reno5 and OPPO Reno6. The OPPO Reno5 Marvel Edition also gets access to the new software at the same time. It is being pushed with the following firmware versions in Indonesia.

OPPO Reno5, OPPO Reno5 Marvel Edition

  • Region: Indonesia
  • Firmware Version: C.08
  • Required Firmware: A.28, A.29

OPPO Reno6

  • Region: Indonesia
  • Firmware Version: C.08
  • Required Firmware: A.10, A.11

In order to check whether their unit has got the update, users of the aforementioned smartphones can head over to Settings > Software Update.

Since the latest software update for the phone is being sent via OTA, it may take some time to reach every user. For the uninitiated, OTA rollout is usually carried out in a batched manner, so that the company can pull back the update easily without affecting many users in case of any major bug.

Having said that, if you happen to have installed the update on your OPPO handset, then do let us know your experience in the section below. This may help users who haven’t got it.

Tesla Superchargers are being destroyed in China, charging cables sold for money

Over the last couple of days, netizens in China have uploaded pictures of destroyed Tesla Supercharger power stations. Apparently, some people have been attacking these stations for their charging cables that are being resold for money.

Tesla

According to a MyDrivers report, the American automobile maker’s Supercharger stations have been spotted with no charging cables. Reportedly, some people have been cutting the cables from the roots. For those unaware, these power stations are basically small gas station for Tesla cars, and are their to charge the brand’s electric vehicles. However, since these charging points have copper wires, they are being targeted and their parts being sold for money.

Interestingly enough, the “thieves” are only targeting Supercharger stations for their cables, rest of the components were left relatively untouched. The report states that the current price of copper per kilogram is around 70 Yuan (roughly 11 US Dollars) in the market. So, these thieves are probably only making around 100 Yuan (roughly 15.72 US Dollars) for every charging station that they destroy. On the other hand, Tesla is likely facing a far larger loss from these attacks.

Tesla

The report further added that price of the company’s charging cables could be around tens of thousands of Yuan per unit. In other words, the EV maker is potentially facing more than 100,000 Yuan (roughly 15,716 US Dollars) in damages while the thieves are just making 100 Yuan. Furthermore, the stations being destroyed will likely also remain dysfunctional for a few days before repairs.

Samsung’s seemingly new software strategy for Europe could result in faster updates

Samsung is undoubtedly one of the industry leaders with regards to rolling out timely updates. The South Korean company led the update race this year, releasing Android 12 for most of its extensive lineup already. There is one issue with the current update process, however, that not only creates quite a mess but also results in unnecessary resource drain for the company — regional fragmentation.

Most OEMs adopt a batch release process where updates are sent out to devices of select regions first before being made available widely. This helps limit the damage of any build if it turns out buggy. In the case of Samsung, every phone carries a specific “CSC” code that identifies its region, and the company has to apparently test builds for each code separately.

samsung-firmware-landcode-branded-unbranded-firmwares-en-update-in-2022
Image: Galaxy Club

And that’s where fragmentation creeps in, resulting in some regional variants either being far ahead in terms of build versions or far behind. This problem could now be finally changing, according to Galaxy Club (via Android Police).

Samsung appears to be unifying CSC codes for newer smartphone releases, effectively reducing the number of variations in circulation. Take the 4G variant of the Galaxy A52, for example, that had far fewer CSC variants than other models. This trend has carried forward with the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Flip3, with the duo now carrying a unified EUX CSC code for Europe.

Moreover, Galaxy Club has verified that no ‘hyper-localized’ firmware is currently being developed for any Samsung phone due to appear in 2022. These include the Galaxy S22 series, Galaxy A23, and Galaxy A73, all of which use a more uniform EUX code for the entire continent.

While it appears that this new firmware development strategy is being adopted only for Europe at the moment, it is likely that it will seep through to other regions as well.

So, what’s the upside for users? The most noticeable benefit should be quicker updates as Samsung needs to work on just one build for a group of countries. Such perks are already turning to reality — the Galaxy S21 received Android 12 in record time — and we should hopefully be seeing even faster rollouts with Android 13.

The Realme 9 Pro+ 5G is expected to arrive with a 6.43-inch AMOLED FHD+ 90Hz display, Dimensity 920 chipset, 6 GB / 8 GB of RAM, 128 GB / 256 GB of storage, and a 4,500mAh battery. POCO M4 Pro 4G could be a rebranded Redmi Note 11S

Back in November 2021, POCO released the POCO M4 Pro 5G. This device is nothing but a rebadged Chinese Redmi Note 11 5G, which is also known as Redmi Note 11T 5G in India. A few days back, the 4G variant of POCO M4 Pro emerged on a certification website. Now, we finally know which handset it may be based on.

Redmi Note 11S
Redmi Note 11S

According to findings by Xiaomiui, the POCO M4 Pro 4G is codenamed Fleur with model number 2201117PG. The device is listed with the same details in the MIUI code.

Bizarrely, the newly announced Redmi Note 11S also has the same codename and near-identical model numbers.

This clearly suggests that the upcoming POCO M4 Pro 4G could be a rebranded Redmi Note 11S. Anyway, we aren’t surprised as POCO phones have always been rebranded or tweaked versions of Redmi smartphones, except for the original POCO F1 (aka POCOPHONE F1).

POCO-branded products are usually cheaper than their Redmi counterparts. Hence, the forthcoming handset will be likely cheaper than the phone it is based on.

As far as availability is concerned, the POCO M4 Pro 4G appears to have only one single model number, which belongs to the ‘Global’ variant. Therefore, for now, we can say that the smartphone could be limited to a select few markets, especially those in Southeast Asia as it has bagged NBTC (Thailand) certification.

Apple is the world’s most valuable brand for 2022, while TikTok saw the fastest growth: Report

A new report has revealed that Apple has managed to become the world’s most valued brand for the year 2022. Meanwhile, its rivals like Google, Samsung, and Huawei have also reached the top 10 rankings.

Apple

According to a report from Brand Directory, the Cupertino based giant is valued around 355.1 billion US Dollars as per their calculations. Keep in mind, this figure is from the report and does not represent the iPhone maker’s market cap. Looking at the top 10 list, we can also see other known brands like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Walmart, which accounted for the top 5 spots respectively. On the other hand, Samsung, Facebook, ICBC, Huawei, and Verizon rounded up the last five spots in the top 10 list.

The report further added that Apple’s brand valuation was up by an impressive 35 percent over the previous year, which helped it achieve the highest valuation Brand Directory has ever recorded. It stated that “Apple had a stellar 2021, highlighted by its achievement at the start of 2022 – being the first company to reach a US$3 trillion market valuation. The tech giant’s success historically lied in honing its core brand positioning, but its more recent growth can be attributed to the company’s recognition that its brand can be applied effectively to a much broader range of services.”

Apple

Interestingly, while the report showcased the top 10 brands as well as Apple’s valuation, it also revealed the fastest growing brand as well. TikTok took this achievement with its brand value tripling in 2022 over the previous year. Brand Directory stated that “TikTok is the world’s fastest-growing brand. With an astounding 215% growth, the entertainment app’s brand value has increased from US$18.7 billion in 2021 to US$59.0 billion this year. Claiming 18th spot among the world’s top 500 most valuable brands, it is the highest new entrant to the Brand Finance Global 500 2022 ranking.”

Redmi Note 11 may launch alongside Redmi Note 11S in India

Earlier this week, Xiaomi confirmed to launch the Redmi Note 11S in India on February 9. Yesterday, this smartphone went official alongside the rest of the Redmi Note 11 international models at the company’s first global launch event of 2022. Now, according to a teaser, it seems like the Redmi Note 11S could be accompanied by one of its siblings in India.

Redmi Note 11 India Launch Teaser

The Redmi India official Twitter handle tweeted a cryptic tweet a few minutes back. The image in the tweet clearly states ‘THE BEASTS ARE COMING’. Even the tweet itself reads “We are here to #SetTheBar and make it 𝘥𝘰𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘦!”

Hence, we think that Xiaomi may announce yet another Redmi Note 11 device alongside the Redmi Note 11S in India. Although the company is yet to confirm the second model, our bets are on the vanilla Redmi Note 11.

For the unaware, the standard Redmi Note 11 has a 6.43-inch 90Hz FHD+ AMOLED display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 chipset, 50MP (wide) + 8MP (ultra-wide) + 2MP (macro) + 2MP (depth) quad-camera setup, 13MP selfie camera, dual stereo speakers, side-mounted fingerprint sensor, 5,000mAh battery, and 33W fast charging.

The Redmi Note 11S, on the other hand, has a faster MediaTek Helio G96 chip, a 108MP primary camera, and a 16MP selfie camera. The rest of the specs are the same as the vanilla model, except for memory configurations.

Purported Realme V23 receives 3C certification

Update: The Realme RMX3475 will be launching as the Realme V25.

Original story continues…

In the previous week, a Realme phone with model number RMX3475 was certified by China’s TENAA telecom authority. At that time, it was speculated that it could be the Realme V25 handset. Now, the device has bagged approval from the country’s 3C regulatory body (via). The certification suggests that the Realme RMX3475 could be arriving in the Chinese market with the Realme V23.

Realme-RMX3475-3c

The Realme RMX3475 has been spotted with a 33W charger at the Chinese certification site. Last year, Realme released four V-series phones in Chinas such as Realme V11, V11s, V13, and V15. Except for the V15 that came with 50W charging, the other three phones support 18W charging. Hence, it appears that the Realme RMX3475 could be the successor for the Realme V13 from last year. This indicates that the device may break cover as the Realme V23.

Purported Realme V23 specifications (rumored)

The TENAA listing of the RMX3475 revealed that it has a 6.586-inch LCD panel that offers an FHD+ resolution. It has a front camera of 16-megapixel and a 64-megapixel + 2-megapixel + 2-megapixel triple camera unit on the back.

Realme RMX3475

The RMX3475 is driven by an unknown octa-core processor that clocks at 2.2GHz. It is likely to feature a 5G-ready Snapdragon 6-series chipset. Hence, it could be powered by the Snapdragon 695 or Snapdragon 69v0 chipset. The handset is expected to offer 6 GB / 8 GB / 12 GB of RAM and it will offer 128 GB / 256 GB storage choices.

The Android 12 OS coupled with Realme UI 3.0 will come preinstalled on the device. It is likely to house a 5,000mAh battery. The device measures 8.5mm in thickness and weighs 195 grams. It may arrive in China in colors like Dark Day, Peak Blue, and Aurora.

Apple becomes leading smartphone brand in China with 23% market share

Apple, which has had a good year with the launch of the iPhone 13 series models in the market, has now emerged as the leading smartphone brand in the Chinese market for the fourth quarter of 2021.

According to the report from market research firm Counterpoint Research, Apple had a record-high market share in China in the fourth quarter of 2021, covering around 23 percent of the total smartphone market.

China Smartphone Market Share Q4 2021

This indicates a year-on-year growth of 32 percent for the US-based tech giant. The report says that Apple’s pricing strategy helped to perform better in China, along with the exit of Huawei from the premium segment, making room for Apple to capture its market share.

Following Apple is China’s own Vivo with a 19 percent market share. The third spot has been captured by OPPO, having a 17 percent share. Both Vivo and OPPO have witnessed a decline of 6 percent year-on-year.

Honor has rapidly recaptured its position in the market and is now the fourth-largest smartphone brand in China, having a 15 percent share. The company also witnessed an impressive 50 percent YoY growth.

Xiaomi, Huawei, and Realme stand at fifth, sixth, and seventh positions respectively with 13 percent, 7 percent, and 3 percent market share. Other brands make up for the remaining 4 percent market share.

While brands like Apple, Honor, and Realme saw growth in Q4 2021, the overall Chinese smartphone market witnessed a 9 percent decline. However, for the entire year of 2021, Vivo emerged as the leading brand with a 22 percent market share, followed by OPPO, Apple, Xiaomi, Honor, Huawei, and Realme.

Huawei Publishes Patent for a Wireless Charging Solution for Wireless Headphones, Here are the Details

For the past 2 years, manufacturers are flooding into the wireless earphones market with their own in-house options. There have been a few wireless headphones options too like from Apple and Sony. And it looks like an upcoming competitor may be entering the scene soon as Huawei has recently published a patent for a technology that could bring forward the future of wireless headphones.

Apple AirPods Max

As of January 25, 2022, Huawei has submitted a patent for a wireless charging solution for wireless headphones to the Chinese Regulated Patent Database, QCC.

For context, the AirPods Max and Sony WH-1000XM4 do not support wireless charging, the AirPods Max charges via a Lightning cable, while the Sony WH1000XM4 receives juice forms its USB Type C port. If Huawei were to implement this patent into its upcoming first pair of wireless headphones, it would be an industry first for the company, and it would be the main selling point for users who were planning to buy such wireless headphones that they would like to wirelessly charge.

As for the details on how the wireless charging solution works, Huawei has listed out the patent as follows:

  • The wireless earphones will include two ear cups, with a headband connecting both ear cups together.
  • Each ear cup contains its casing, touch controls, its respective wireless charging copper contacts, and its circuitry board connecting to the battery. The copper contacts are located under the casing and in front of the circuitry board. When the ear cup is in contact with a wireless charging pad, the headphones will start charging via the copper contacts n the ear cups.
  • The copper contacts are conductive to electricity, and the lines on the copper contact pads will be spaced evenly and effectively for maximum induction efficiency(ie for one coil on the copper contact pads, it may have a 20%-80% bigger effective induction area size than its physical area occupied)

If successfully brought into the market, wireless headphones can finally be truly wireless, as you no longer need a wired cable to charge the headset no more.

As of Huawei’s current lineup of wireless earphones, Huawei currently has the bold yet innovative design of its Huawei Freebuds Lipstick Earbuds. These earbuds are a pair of very light and comfortable with a solid metal build quality. The steel body of both earbuds and the charging case, paired with its gold-accented colourway,  gives it a decent sense of luxury. The earbuds also feature active-noise cancellation for those who want to enjoy their music in peace.
