OnePlus 10 may launch with Dimensity 9000 SoC, testing to start soon: Report

With the OnePlus 10 series launch being just around the corner, a new report has surfaced which hints at one of the variants in the flagship lineup. Apparently, the company will be launching one model within its latest high end series that features the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 SoC.

OnePlus 10 Pro Green

The news arrives from MySmartPrice and known tipster Yogesh Brar. As of right now, the Chinese smartphone maker has yet to announce the exact launch dates for its upcoming flagship phones, although, it is rumored to first unveil the Pro variant on 11th January 2022 while the vanilla model would launch sometime after. But now, the new tip revealed a key specification of the base variant.

For those unaware, MediaTek had recently unveiled its top end mobile processor for premium handsets. It features a 1+3+4 cluster and is based on a 4nm process, with a maximum clock speed of 3.0GHz on its most powerful core. So while the OnePlus 10 Pro is set to be among the first flagship smartphones to feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset, it appears that the base model will be one of the first to ship with the Dimensity 9000 processor.

OnePlus

Notably, the tipster further added that OnePlus will soon begin testing the new smartphones with its unified operating system with Oppo for the global markets. With both companies merging, the new devices would likely ship with a Android 12 based ColorOS 12 or OxygenOS 12 out of the box. Keep in mind that this is still an unconfirmed report so take it with a pinch of salt and stick around as we will be covering any other leaks or reports regarding this matter.

Lava offers Realme 8s owners a chance to swap their phones for Free with the AGNI 5G

It is common to see smartphone companies promote their models by comparing them to other models from rival brands that fall in the same product category. It is also common to see OEMs troll each other for more reason or the other as a marketing tool. But what is probably not common is a company directly offering to swap a rival brand’s model with its own. That is what Indian firm Lava is presently doing with the Realme 8s.

Turns out Lava is offering Realme 8s owners the chance to swap their units for a Lava AGNI 5G. The thing is Lava AGNI 5G and Realme 8s booth share similar specs except for a few differences. The differences lie in the display size where the AGNI 5G pack a 6.78-inch display as against a 6.5-inch screen for the Realme model. Also, the AGNI 5G packs a quad-camera setup at the rear consisting of a 64MP+5MP+2MP+2MP setup whereas the *s has a triple camera setup made up of a 64MP+2MP+2MP combo.Lava AGNI 5G It is left for users to decide if the offer is worth taking up considering the specs are almost similar. But then, who would like to snap a used phone for a brand new one. It sounds inviting but we can’t guarantee that you’ll get the same software experience on both models. The company will definitely be riding on the back of its popularity as an indigenous Indian brand to get this offer flying. Even at that, it is a tough nut convincing an average phone user to swap a realme model for a similarly specced Lava phone.

The offer is open to owners of both the 6GB and 8GB variants of the Realme 8s. It will run from January 3rd to January 7 and can be accessed from Lava’s e-store.

Design

Despite they were released by two different brands, the Xiaomi 12X and the Realme GT Neo2 have a lot in common when it comes to design. They have a similar camera module on the rear side and a borderless display with a punch hole for the front camera. The materials used belong to the same class, but the color options of the Realme GT Neo2 are a bit more interesting. On the other hand, the Xiaomi 12X is a lot more compact and thinner than its rival, which is why a lot of people may prefer it as it is one of the most compact high-end phones out there.

Display

The Xiaomi 12X has one of the smallest displays in the high-end segment with a diagonal of just 6.28 inches. But it is also one of the best displays and on the paper, it is better than the panel found on the Relame GT 2 Pro. The Xiaomi 12X has an OLED display that shows up to one billion colors and sports a 120 Hz refresh rate, the HDR10+ certification, and Dolby Vision, as well as a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels and the Gorilla Glass Victus protection by Corning. The Realme GT 2 Pro has just 16 million colors and it lacks Dolby Vision support, but it has a wider 6.62-inch display which is actually better in terms of dimensions for productivity and gaming. Both the phones are equipped with an in-display fingerprint reader.

Specs & Software

Xiaomi 12X and Realme GT Neo2 have exactly the same hardware department. They are fueled by the Snapdragon 870 mobile platform by Qualcomm built at 7 nm and running at a max frequency of 3.2 GHz. The SoC is paired with either 8 or 12 GB of RAM and 128 or 256 GB of UFS 3.1 native storage. Same processor, same RAM, and same storage, but different Android version: the Xiaomi 12X is very recent and it runs Android 12, while Realme GT Neo2 runs Android 11 out of the box.

Camera

The rear cameras of the Xiaomi 12X are superior to the Realme GT Neo2. The main sensor is a 50 MP lens with OIS and it is paired with a 13 MP ultrawide camera and a 5 MP telephoto macro sensor. Realme GT 2 Neo2 has an inferior 64 MP sensor without OIS, an inferior 8 MP ultrawide camera, and an inferior 2 MP macro camera. The Xiaomi 12X even wins the selfie comparison thanks to a 32 MP front snapper.

Battery

The Realme GT Neo2 wins the battery life comparison simply because it is equipped with a bigger battery: the capacity is 5000 mAh and it allows for longer battery life in every scenario because the phone comes with similar components to the Xiaomi 12X. Charging speeds are not so different because these phones support 65W fast charging and 67W fast charging, respectively.

Price

The Realme GT Neo2 is priced at about €306/$345 in the Chinese market, while the starting price of the Xiaomi 12X in China is close to €445/$503. The Xiaomi 12X is a superior handset thanks to its better display and better cameras, but there is also an important price difference between these two handsets. Further, note that Realme GT Neo2 has a wider display and a bigger battery. Which one would you pick?

The top three chips for this year’s flagship phones reportedly have overheating issues

Overheating of chips is an important part of their production process and chip makers continue to seek ways of keeping their chips cool while not affecting overall performance. There are reports that three top-of-the-line chips which will be debuting in some of this year’s flagship smartphones could be having overheating problems. The chips are the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, Samsung’s Exynos 2200, and MediaTek’s Dimensity 9000, which are all top-end super-functional chips of their various manufacturers.MediaTek Dimensity 9000

Taiwanese company TSMC is the producer of the Dimensity 9000 while Samsung Foundry assembled both the Exynos 2200 and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. All three chips are produced using the 4nm node process and there had been some tweets by a few tipsters pointing to the presence of the overheating problem in these top-end chips. The leaks related to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 which was observed to overheat when put through the paces in the Motorola Edge X30, one of the few models sporting the flagship chip.

TSMC has a superior 4nm process than Samsung Foundry, hence the Dimensity 9000 could perform better and experience less overheating than the other two chips. Although the views by the tipsters are not definitive, it remains to be seen how the demand for these high-end chips pans out this year. The global chip shortage is still projected to persist beyond the first half of 2022.

AnTuTu did say that the lack of sufficient data was responsible for the absence of the Snapdragon 8 Gen1-powered phones on the chart despite the launch of two models viz-a-viz Xiaomi 12 and Motorola Edge 30 Ultra in December 2021. We expect the models to dominate the rankings for January 2022 which will be released in February. Already, the models are on sales with the Xiaomi 12 series recording a huge sales in its first outing.

For the midrange segment, Vivo’s iQOO Z5 maintains its lead yet again despite a stiff competition from other brands. Honor 60 Pro emerge as the second best mid-ranger around, replacing the OPPO K9s 5G. The Honor 60 Pro is on par with the iQOO Z5 with the presence of UFS 3.1 storage being the major difference between both models. The Reno 7 from OPPO is also another new entrant into the charts, clinching the third spot.

[UPDATED] Xiaomi’s MIUI 13 can now protect you from phone frauds and scams in China, here’s how they do it

UPDATE:

As of recent, Xiaomi announced an anti-fraud feature in its MIUI 13. However, one Xiaomi Exec has come to the Xiaomi China Community Forum to deny that MIUI has added any Chinese National Online Anti-Fraud Agency feature/app in its latest MIUI 13.  Despite this, the South China Morning Post has reported that many Chinese Xiaomi users are unable to install certain apps after upgrading to Xiaomi’s latest MIUI 13 and users were attributing the problem to the “system-level full-link anti-telecoms fraud”, which was announced earlier, by Xiaomi’s head of MIUI, Jin Fan, during the company’s product event on December 28. Then, one Xiaomi spokesman clarified that the company’s anti-fraud feature is designed to flag spam calls, which was not supposed to flag apps as well.

Ever since the existence of wireless communication, there always has been a person behind the screen or phone trying to scam you of your info or of your money. With the prevalence of online scams these days, it is getting quite annoying to try to avoid them from getting into your life at every corner.

Well, fear not! Xiaomi has recently a new feature in its latest MIUI 13 to help solve these issues for its users. In MIUI 13, Xiaomi, in collaboration with the Chinese online anti-fraud government agency, has developed an in-country fully linked automated network with the database of info scammers and fraudsters across the country.

Xiaomi mentions this feature implementation will be system-wide on MIUI 13 supported devices. This feature will be using a blacklist from the national fraud database, and in turn, show up as a warning to MIUI 13 users, if the SMS message or phone number used is listed in the database, or seems identical (i.e. word for word) to a message listed in the blacklist.

An example of how this feature works is when you are receiving a call from a blacklisted number in the database, the number will be shown as “caller fraudster” on screen for the user to immediately discern the difference. The warning will also appear next to the contact name as a warning, to let those who were recently upgraded to MIUI 13 be aware that which one of their contacts may be a potential info scammer.

As for SMSes, the network will also help identify the fraudulent messages, which may include fake OTPs from “banks”, or “banks” warning to pay up the credit card you have(when you don’t even have one). In MIUI 13, two warnings will be given. First, if the SMS service number is a known blacklisted number in the database and second, the message content resembles the vocabulary of a fraudulent SMS.

As mentioned by the MIUI software team, this is the Chinese government’s first initiative to implement this feature in the country’s smartphones, and as the country’s leading tech giant, they want to take action for the sake of their users as well.

As of now, only MIUI 13 supported devices are the Xiaomi 12 series, however, expect Xiaomi to roll out MIUI 13 to more of its devices in the coming months.

Acer Swift X 2022 could be the world’s first laptop with Intel ARC GPU; CES 2022 launch

In late 2021, news broke that Intel could launch the upcoming Intel ARC lineup of GPUs in early 2022. However, recent leaks point out at a March launch as the company postponed Jan’s unveiling for an unknown reason. Now, a fresh leak suggests that we might see new Intel ARC Alchemist GPU powered laptops tomorrow.

The CES 2022 will kickstart this week and we expect to see a bunch of hardware like laptops, phones, and gadgets getting showcased at the event. As per leaks, we might see Acer launching its Acer Swift X 2022 model tomorrow i.e. January 4.

Acer Swift X 2022

Reportedly, the images of the Swift X 2022 were surfaced on the Internet. Just like the predecessor, Swift X 2021, which was the world’s first laptop with Iris Xe graphics, the Swift X 2022 is also said to be the first laptop with ARC Alchemist GPU.

As per images, the Acer Swift X 2022 looks familiar to the predecessor but has a few changes. The laptop has two USB Type-C ports instead of a single port seen in the Swift X 2021. In the images, the fingerprint scanner seems to be missing, but the power button could double up as a scanner. It also has a USB and an HDMI port.

Apart from the ports, the laptop has a thin-bezel design, however, its specs are still under wraps. It has a chicklet style keyboard without a dedicated number pad.

Other than this, Acer is also expected to showcase other laptops at the event like the Acer Predator Helios 300, Predator Triton 500 SE, and Nitro 5 2022. All the laptops will have new hardware, some of the devices will be powered by the 12th generation Alder Lake H-35 CPUs.
