Oppo Find N Review: Could be your first foldable phone

A lot of people have said that 2022 is the year when foldable phones will finally become one of the most popular mobile form factors. If this is indeed the future, the OPPO Find N could very well be the pioneer that kick-starts this trend.

OPPO FIND N UNBOXING 05

Of course, we have already seen a few existing foldable models in the market, such as, the Xiaomi Mix Fold, Samsung fold series, and the flip series. However, all of them didn’t really stir up a wide discussion about the new form factor. Basically, their high pricing would dissuade most users at the outset.

Oppo find N Review featured 3

But around the end of 2021, the OPPO Find N was launched with a much more reasonable price and a pretty unique look as well.

The pricing is the very first step that makes foldable accessible and builds up curiosity among general users to learn more about this unique form factor. And now that foldables are becoming more and more affordable, let’s move on to the BIG question – what can we do with a foldable phone in 2022?

OPPO FIND N Review: Design & Display

If you want a foldable phone, it’s probably because you’d like to have a bigger screen in our pocket, which means that it should also be easy to hold and compact enough to carry.

Oppo find N Review display

The Find N features a 7.1-inch internal Samsung E5 AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The most controversial part of the display is the near-square ratio. Obviously, it’s not a perfect ratio for playing movies or 16:9 videos. However, when we unfolded the phone for the first time, the display is really stunning. Although it might not be the best size for entertainment, I quite enjoyed the comfortable size that easily covers my view and focus in daily use.

Oppo find N Review full screenFor example, on regular phones, your eyes would unconsciously sweep up and down and your focus might only remain at the middle frame that covers 50 to 70% of the whole display. While the 7.1-inch size is not much bigger physically, but the unique ratio of 8.4 to 9 could expand your view and maintain the concentration at the same time. Oppo find N Review reading app

In addition, the phone has really comfortable viewing experience for other activities like reading or web-browsing. Especially for reading, the phone works like a fantastic pocket book and the reading app is a surprise that offers an immersive reading experience with physical effects and detail.

And although you won’t get a great experience watching films in 21:9 ratio, it’s almost perfect for most old content played at 4:3 ratio.

Oppo find N Review over display

Now let’s see what we can do with the 5.5-inch cover display. I have to say that It’s the best outer display among all the foldable phones. If you’ve seen some foldable models like Galaxy Z Fold 3 or Xiaomi Mix Fold, you must understand why I give such a comment.

They compromised the form of the cover display for having a bigger and more normal-ratio primary display. It leads to a display ratio of around 2.5 to 1, bringing a terrible experience. Users can do very little with such a strange display in daily use. On the Find N, you don’t have to put up with such silly design. Its cover display comfortably offers a similar experience to a compact phone. Most people can handle it well with a single hand, though we still need to bear the weight of 275g.

Oppo find N cover display
Oppo find N cover display

Generally, I only used it for some simple activities like sending or replying to messages, making a call, checking information and so on. And it wouldn’t take me long. So the weight didn’t cause much trouble when I used the phone in folded form.

But it’s still a little disappointing that the small screen only features 60Hz refresh rate, which doesn’t feel as smooth as the primary display.

Oppo find N Review inner 7-inch screen

The flexion Hinge brings pretty wide stand angles and a minimal crease. After using it for over a week, I could hardly find the existence of the crease.

Oppo find N Review cameras

The phone can also be unfolded and freely stand at any angle between 50-120 degrees. And OPPO also offers a pretty wide adaption in actual uses of certain apps, like playing music and videos, turning the bottom part as an operational zone. Or serving itself as a tripod, making 4K time-lapse imaging, video calls or online meeting easy and hands-free.

OPPO FIND N Review: Software

Oppo find N Review split screen

Apart from it, OPPO also developed quite a lot of software features to better support the unique phone, such as more gestures and easy mini-window-mode. For example, you can easily split the screen for dual-app content by swiping down two fingers or dragging an app from the sidebar.

Oppo find N Review split gaming controls

Apart from it, there’s a lot more potential for the new folding form. I believed some are even not recognized by the manufacturers, which would rely on users and app developers to explore more possibility on the Find N. For example, we’ve seen someone has turned it into a classic game handheld that we used to play at least 15 years ago.

And the switch between the two displays is pretty smooth. When changing the phone folding, the viewing content will immediately shift to the other display. To activate it, all you need to do is just to swipe up from the bottom.

OPPO FIND N Review: Performance

About the phone’s performance, it’s powered by the Snapdragon 888 chip. We’ve talked a lot about this chipset. You can just check all the results of tests we run here.

Oppo find N Review benchmarks

On this model, the heating issue is not that serious as what we have on most regular 888-chipset phones. But obviously the CPU strategy is a bit conservative.

OPPO FIND N Review: Cameras

The phone equipped 5 cameras in total, including the triple-camera setup at the back, and dual 32MP front-facing cameras. The triple cameras contain a 50MP main IMX766 sensor with OIS, a 16MP wide-angle camera and another 13MP 2x telephoto camera. Let’s check some samples.

Oppo find N Review_ Your first foldable phone 6-25 screenshot

From the samples, the 50MP main camera can catch rich detail with decent dynamic range. And under most lighting conditions, the white balance is good and stable, which brings a relatively true tone for the samples.

For the 16MP wide-angle camera, its dynamic range is not that impressive as the main camera, but it’s still good at producing sharp images with good pureness. But you might notice that the edge image is not so pure and sharp as the central image.

During these few days, I truly feel that the 13MP 2x sensor is much more practical and more frequently used than those 3x or 5x telephoto camera. It has pretty close view range to what we actually see. And the detail looks good thanks to the 13MP resolution. No doubt it did exceed what we expected with the telephoto camera.

Oppo find N Review_ Your first foldable phone 7-47 screenshot

Thanks to OPPO’s imaging software, all the three cameras got well optimized in low-light shooting. we can see it’s less noisy under the night mode and at the same time, reserved much more detail especially for the brightness.

You can check our sample comparison in our review video above.

Oppo find N Review camera angle

The biggest surprise of shooting with the foldable form is about video shooting. The free-stand hinge allows us to split the display into a view monitor and an operation hub. And we also can place it on a surface and serve it as a tripod for time-lapse filming.

OPPO FIND N Review: Battery Life and Charging

Oppo find N Review Battery Life

Adding a larger foldable display is definitely not a benefit for its battery life. Even though they’ve equipped a 4500mAh battery with support for 33W wired fast charging. But in our battery test and charging test it performs not too bad. At least it’s estimated to last for the whole-day works without playing games a lot.

OPPO FIND N Review: Verdict

Oppo find N Review outer cameras

The OPPO Find N is probably the most impressive model we got our hands on lately. But more importantly, during this week, there’s no longer the feeling that the phone looks like a toy. Instead, it works like a daily phone without any discomfort. It truly brings a feeling that I can finally get used to a horizontally foldable phone, which has never happened with previous foldable phones. I think most users would get the same realization.

It’s also the most valuable point for the foldable category. We will no longer look at it curiously and just move away.

Honor Watch GS 3 real-life images emerge, comes with 8-channel heart rate AI engine

The Honor Watch GS 3 was officially unveiled back on August 12, 2021 along with a bunch of official images and nearly its entire feature list. However, it is only now that the watch appears to be closer than ever to launch, thanks to the appearance of a couple of its real-life images for the very first time.

IT Home reports that public testing of the watch began on December 24th itself and that it is beginning to make its way to offline stores in China.

The leaked real-life images show the watch in a sleek all-black color, looking identical to its official promo photos from August. The strap appears to be made of rubber while the body looks to be of metal. The tipster who leaked the images has further revealed that the watch lacks wireless charging but also carries a very ‘cost-effective’ price.

Other known information about the Honor Watch GS 3 is that it is the company’s very first smartwatch to be equipped with an 8-channel heart rate AI engine. The tech allows for greater accuracy in dynamic heart rate monitoring and reduces the risk of heart rhythm signal instability.

Honor Watch GS3 featured

The Honor Watch GS 3 itself has a round dial attached to a metal case. It has two physical buttons and uses quick-release straps. It will be available in three color and design variants – there is Voyager which has a silver case and blue leather straps, Streamer Classic with a golden case and brown leather straps, and Racing Edition with a gray case and black rubber straps.

POCO M4 will reportedly launch in February with 64MP camera and 90Hz display

POCO may soon launch the POCO M4 as a successor to last year’s POCO M3, according to a new report.

New details shared by tipster Mukul Sharma with MySmartPrice reveal that the POCO M4 will be launched in February globally, with highlight features being its 64MP primary camera and 90Hz display.

While there is little info provided about its chipset other than it being from MediaTek, it is expected to be a 5G-supporting one. Nevertheless, a number of specifications concerning other departments of the device have actually been shared by the tipster.

POCO M3 Cameras Featured A
POCO M3

Starting with photography, the POCO M4 will feature a triple-camera setup comprised of a 64MP OV64B40 sensor, an 8MP IMX355 sensor, and a 2MP OV2A lens. The display will likely be an LCD panel with a refresh rate of 90Hz. And finally, on the software front, the POCO M4 will likely be booting into Android 11 out of the box, layered with MIUI 12.5 atop — a bummer considering Android 12 and even MIUI 13 is out now.

That said, now that news of the POCO M4 being under development is now out, we should be seeing more of the leaks and even official teasers dropping soon.

POCO had very recently in November 2021 launched the POCO M4 Pro. The device came with a camera module stretched across its width, making its rear-end look very similar to that of the POCO M3. It is thus possible that the vanilla POCO M4 will also be sporting a similar design since it has now become something of POCO’s fashion statement.

China Mobile to launch a new NZONE S7 series smartphone on Jan 5

In late November, a tipster hinted at the launch of a new NZONE-branded smartphone. A little over a month later, the company has now officially started teasing the release of this handset. So far, it has revealed the launch date, design, and charging speed.

NZONE S7 Series Teaser A

China Mobile’s NZONE brand has scheduled to launch an NZONE S7 series phone with 5G connectivity on January 5. The device will be unveiled at 2:30 PM (local time) in China.

According to the teasers on Weibo, the smartphone will have a matrix camera array at the rear. The setup will include three sensors accompanied by an LED flash. The backside of the handset will also house a fingerprint sensor.

On the front, the phone will flaunt a display with a dewdrop notch. The bottom bezel will be slightly larger than the top one. Finally, the device will have support for 22.5W fast charging.

NZONE S7 Series Teaser B

Going by the available information, the handset might not be a better version of NZONE S7 Pro, as tipped earlier. Instead, it could be a watered-down variant. Perhaps, it could go official as the vanilla NZONE S7.

Having said that, as we are still two days from the official announcement, we expect to learn even more about the smartphone.

Samsung wants you to brag about NFTs, adds official support for TVs

With the start of a new year, Samsung Electronics is gearing up to include a brand new feature for its 2022 TV lineup. So what is this cutting edge feature that it believes will help its TVs gain an edge in the market? Well, it’s something revolutionary called NFT support.

Samsung

According to an official press release “With demand for NFTs on the rise, the need for a solution to today’s fragmented viewing and purchasing landscape has never been greater. In 2022, Samsung is introducing the world’s first TV screen based NFT explorer and marketplace aggregator, a groundbreaking platform that lets you browse, purchase, and display your favorite art — all in one place.” So, it is not just a way for your to brag about your pricey NFT purchase on your TV during house parties, it’s offering you an entire marketplace platform.

The company believes that this new feature will also allow creators to “share their art with the world” and other prospective buyers. This is made possible with added NFT support that lets users preview an NFT before buying. Notably, the brand is even taking this chance to inform users about NFT’s history and blockchain metadata as well. Furthermore, the support doesn’t just let you view and browse NFTs, it also takes the creator’s efforts in mind and adjusts the image being displayed as per the original preset values. In other words, we’re getting color accurate treatment for NFTs now.

Samsung

Apart from just being able to preview and buy those Bored Apes, Samsung also intends to flesh out the platform as a full fledged marketplace. Meaning, one can even trade NFTs from this platform. It is clear that the brand wants to jump on the NFT hype train. But, it will be the first to step into this segment, so we can expect to see other companies soon rush to bring support for NFTs as well, or possibly even a new rival marketplace.

Realme to invest 90% of its R&D in 5G technology to offer 5G-ready budget phones in India

Realme seems to be gearing up for a full-fledged 5G lineup of phones this year as in discussion with folks at BGR, the company CEO Madhav Sheth revealed that Realme is allocating 90% of its R&D in the 5G technology.

Realme’s current portfolio of smartphones is a mixture of budget 4G phones coupled with all the 5G phones in the premium segment. However, this may change. Realme is reportedly investing 90% of its research and development in the 5G technology.

REALME

“We are also investing millions of dollars for the beautiful aesthetics of the phones and how are we going to increase the performance on the 5G. We do not want bulky 5 devices. We have set out seven 5G R&D centres including one in India”, said Sheth.

Sheth further said that in future, Realme aims to be the 5G leader in the Indian market. Realme will launch 5G devices above ₹15,000(~$201) in the country. Although not confirmed, this could be mainly because of the rise in budget 5G-enabled chipsets in the market. Some of the trendy chipsets with which Realme may launch its budget 5G phones are the Snapdragon 480, 480 Plus, 690 5G, Dimensity 700, 900, 920 and  810.

Realme 9i

To corroborate, Realme is currently gearing for its upcoming Realme 9 series launch in the market. The upcoming Realme 9 and 9 Pro were spotted in certification sites with Dimensity 810 and Dimensity 920 respectively. As per a tipster, the 5G-ready series will launch in February 2022. The phones are expected to get their first release in European markets followed by other regions like India and China.

LG to demonstrate tech like transparent OLED and crease-less foldable displays with CES 2022

LG has just announced that it would be showcasing all of its latest display-related innovations under the theme of “Display Your Universe” at CES 2022. These solutions will not only be catering to people’s ever-growing needs but also bring along new experiences set to redefine the way people do ordinary tasks in their daily lives.

OLED.EX technology

This year’s showstopper is LG Display’s new OLED.EX tech for OLED TVs that promises an improved photo quality and viewing experience. OLED.EX is an acronym for ‘Evolution’ and ‘eXperience’ and lives up to it with improvements like a 30% boost in brightness and reduction of bezel width from 6mm to 4mm. The tech will be integrated with every LG OLED TV display starting from the second quarter of 2022.

Transparent OLED displays

LG is also going big on transparent OLED displays with an aim of bridging the gap between online and physical spaces. The company’s Transparent OLED boasts transparency high enough to replace regular glass that too with little to no compromise on picture quality.

LG Display’s Smart Window

Such displays have also been stated to be quite slim and light, allowing for them to get utilized across a wide range of scenarios. There is ‘Show Window’ for shopping malls, ‘Smart Window’ for offices, Transparent OLED for subway trains, and ‘OLED Shelf’ that can transform any home interior into a living space.

Other OLED innovations

Another innovation is ‘Virtual Ride’, which is basically an indoor stationary bicycle with three vertically-curved 55-inch OLED displays in front of and above it. It allows cyclists to carry out their favorite activity while being in the comfort of their homes.

Other tech that will be showcased at CES 2022 includes Gaming OLED displays with response time 10 times faster than regular LCD displays, and of course, the almost entirely crease-free 17-inch Foldable OLED for laptops. The latter comes with the company’s touchscreen solutions, allowing usage by fingers and pen.

IPS Black

The biggest downside of LCD displays, when compared to AMOLED, is that they lack deep blacks. LG has been working on a solution for this and is set to demonstrate its ‘IPS Black’ tech through a 27-inch UHD monitor at CES 2022. The technology promises 35 percent darker blacks than existing IPS products along with lowering the level of blue light significantly. It also comes with a near-borderless design.

Samsung unveils new radio waves powered Eco Remotes in CES 2022

In recent years, Samsung has actively been working on making its TV remotes more and more eco friendly. Now, the company has unveiled its latest Eco Remotes that can draw power from radio waves.

During CES 2022, the South Korean tech giant unveiled the 2022 Eco Remotes. Last year, the brand had featured a large solar panel on these remotes, and now, we have a new way of charging these remotes. The TV controllers can apparently harvest radio frequencies, which sounds quite futuristic. Notably, these remote will still feature solar panels but it will also be powered by radio waves as well. Although, the amount would be small.

Samsung

The radio frequencies that will help charge the remote include radio waves like your WiFi router. According to Samsung, drawing power from radio frequencies will allow the remote to charge fully while you’re watching TV. In other words, it can passively harvest RF to power up regardless of whether it is day or night. This also hints that it can possibly run for a longer time than previous iterations.

The company further added that will be made with a “recycled material design,” similar to its predecessors. This latest model will also be available in a new white color variant and retains its minimalist design. It even houses a microphone for voice controls along with shortcuts for Netflix, Disney Plus, Amazon Price Video, and Samsung’s TV Plus as well. This new remote will ship with all of its 2022 TV lineups.

Samsung Galaxy A12 receives price cut of Rs 1,000 in India ahead of its successor’s launch

Samsung Galaxy A12 in India has received a price cut of Rs 1,000 in India, ahead of the launch of the Galaxy A13 5G that’s set to go live sometime next month along with the Galaxy A33 5G.

The A12 earlier started at Rs 13,999 for 4GB RAM and 64GB storage variant but the updated price tag now says Rs 12,999 (via 91mobiles). It is joined by another 6GB+128GB option that has also received a price cut of Rs 1,000 and will now cost Rs 15,499.

Samsung Galaxy A12

The Galaxy A12 currently sells through Samsung’s own online store, Amazon, and Flipkart, although Flipkart doesn’t seem to be reflecting on the new prices as of yet. It is likely that offline stores with the phone in stock will also be updating their prices.

The Samsung Galaxy A12 comes with a 6.5-inch HD+ Infinity-V PLS TFT display with a waterdrop notch. On the Samsung online store, the 4GB+64GB variant is powered by the Exynos 850 processor while the beefier 6GB+128GB variant comes with the MediaTek G35 processor. Both are nearly identical in terms of performance, although the Exynos 850 does have a slight edge, or at least that’s what benchmark scores seem to suggest.

For photography, you get four cameras at the rear, with the king of the hill of being a “true” 48MP shooter. The remaining three are 5MP ultrawide, 2MP macro, and 2MP depth cameras. The phone weighs 205g and packs a 5,000mAh battery with support for 15W charging.

Google Pixel 7 may come with an under-display camera technology similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s UDC

Back in May 2021, a patent filed by Google for an under-display camera technology was surfaced on the Internet. However, it used sub-display technology, where a second screen is placed opposite to the selfie camera and a mirror is placed exactly between both. This type of technology is expensive and it may make the phone’s price hefty. Now, another patent from the company has been filed, but for a different under-display camera technology. Interestingly, the new technology could be cost-effective for Google and we may end up seeing it in the upcoming Google Pixel 7.

According to a report from LetsGoDigital, a patent filed by Google with the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) on August 31, 2021, was recently published. Reportedly, the patent reveals that in order to offer a large full-screen experience, a new type of under-display camera technology was filed. However, the exact type of solution is not clear. But this time around it is touted to be an emissive display paired with a small non-emissive part(selfie camera cut-out) to allow light to the selfie camera sensor.

Google Pixel 7

For such kind of technology, evidently, an OLED display will be used. The non-emissive screen will let the sensor get sufficient light offering better quality photos. Furthermore, the emissive part of the screen will radiate light, which will end up hiding the camera cut-out.

This type of technology is not new and was used in some already existing phones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3. Mr Sangmoo Choi is reported to be the inventor of the technology for Google, but the patent was reportedly in conflict with one of Samsung’s older patents.

Google Pixel 7

Apparently, Sangmoo had worked in Samsung a few years back and this could be the reason for the similarities in both the patents. Samsung filed a similar under-display camera patent back in 2017 and it seemed to be materialized in the recent Galaxy Z Fold 3.

Despite the similarities, it remains to be seen, how does the new patent from Google materialize in the upcoming Pixel phones. And who knows, the Google Pixel 7 may come with a full-screen display with this under-display camera technology.
