Huawei unveils AR HUD tech for cars, turns front windshield into a smart screen

Huawei has just unveiled its latest innovation at the Munich International Automobile Expo that is being held in Germany. It is the new AR HUD technology, which is an augmented reality based system that powers a heads up display that can turn a car’s front wind shield into a smart screen.

Huawei

As per official notes, the new AR HUD technology will offer an informative and interactive heads up display for the car’s front windshield. For those unaware, a HUD is a common feature in military aircrafts like fighter jets in which crucial details like speed, altitude and other crucial information is displayed in front of the pilot. Now, the Chinese tech giant seeks to use an augmented reality based technology to offer a similar solution in future generation of automobiles. The brand believes that through this technology, carmakers would be able to integrate new technologies, safety, and entertainment together to create a new driving experience.

Huawei

The Huawei AR HUD offers a large viewing angle of 13°x 5°, which is a 70 inch large display area that can cover up to 7.5 meters in the front. To keep the driver’s vision clutter free and without any distractions, the company built the related system in the lower area behind the steering wheel. The new AR HUD would be capable of offering navigation based information like route distance, information regarding the number of lanes in an upcoming road, and other crucial information like weather conditions.Furthermore, an interesting aspect of this technology could also be in the form of night vision or assistive vision during times of heavy rain, low light scenarios, or even fog.

Huawei

This would ensure safety of the driver and the passengers as well. The company stated that the AR HUD will also feature a FHD display up to 100PPD and would not be hindered by issues like low brightness, low contrast, or image distortion that plagues a traditional HUD technology. In other words, it can also be used as an entertainment and multimedia tool, which offers video/movie streaming feature. Other interesting applications include the ability to offer three dimensional mapping system that offers information on parking lots, restaurants, shops, gas stations, and more in real time.

Motorola Air Charging unveiled, almost ready for market

Earlier this year, Motorola showed off a true wireless charging technology, which does not require any physical contact between the device and the charger. Months later, the Lenovo-owned brand now unveils an updated version of this tech.

Motorola Air Charging Featured A

Previously, Motorola called its true wireless charging tech ‘Motorola One Hyper’. It was weird for the brand to use a name associated with one of its budget smartphones from 2019. Hence, the company has changed the name to ‘Motorola Air Charging’.

Motorola’s true wireless charging not only gets a new name, which sounds similar to ‘Xiaomi Mi Air Charge’ but also a complete working prototype. For those unaware, Xiaomi’s solution is merely a concept.

According to the official announcement on Weibo, the Motorola Air Charging technology can charge up to 4 devices at the same time. It works within a range of 3m and 100°.

The company says that its solution uses 1600 antennas that scan regularly for devices. With the help of this network setup, an independent chipset, and algorithm, the firm claims stable charging.

The sub-brand of Lenovo also says that the solution works through paper, leather, and similar objects. However, for safety, the charging stops when a human presence is detected via ‘biological monitoring technology’.

Unfortunately, Motorola does not say when its Air Charging solution will be commercialized. Interestingly, it does not even mention GuRu Wireless, Inc., a company that’s responsible for this technology.

Having said that, one of the Lenovo execs does hint that Motorola Air Charging is almost ready to hit the market.

Samsung plans to launch its 576MP camera sensor in four years

Samsung was the world’s first company to launch a smartphone camera with a 108-megapixel sensor. Continuing the development, the South Korean giant unveiled the world’s first 200-megapixel smartphone camera sensor last week in the form of Samsung ISOCELL HP1.

Now, the company is working on another ambitious smartphone camera sensor — 600-megapixel which the company had revealed last year. However, this high megapixel count sensor isn’t launching anytime soon.

Samsung 576MP Camera Launch Timeline

During a presentation at SEMI Europe Summit, Haechang Lee, Senior VP Automotive Sensor at Samsung Electronics revealed that the South Korean giant plans to launch its 576-megapixel camera sensor in 2025. The image was spotted by Image Sensors World.

Also, it appears that the 576MP camera sensor isn’t being developed for smartphones but the company is developing it for automobiles. It could also be used in drones and medical equipment but its use-case as a smartphone camera doesn’t appear to be a priority.

Samsung ISOCELL Camera Sensor Featured

Last year, when Samsung confirmed that it’s working on a 600MP camera sensor, Yongin Park, Executive Vice President of Samsung’s Sensor Business talked about the company’s ambition of going beyond 500-megapixel which is equivalent to the human eye.

A few months ago, it was leaked that Samsung is developing a 600-megapixel camera sensor which features 0.8µm pixels and is 1/.0.57″ big. At the time, it was reported that the camera results in a 22mm bulge.

The South Korean company is also expanding the categories of its camera sensors usage from smartphones. It is now planning to provide camera sensors for several categories, including autonomous vehicles (AVs), drones, and IoT (Internet of Things) devices.

Xiaomi’s next flagship will have 200MP + 50MP dual primary cameras

Last week, Samsung announced the world’s first 200MP mobile sensor, the ISOCELL HP1. It said it has already begun shipping the sensors to manufacturers but didn’t say which ones. A new leak has revealed Xiaomi is most likely one of such manufacturers as it is working on a phone with a 200MP.

Next year, Xiaomi is expected to follow up the Mi 11 series with the Mi Xiaomi 12 series, and one of the models will have two primary cameras, one of which is a 200MP sensor. The info is from the Chinese leaker, Digital Chat Station, who revealed the detail on Weibo.

Xiaomi 200MP camera phone

In his words, Xiaomi’s next-generation flagship will have a 200MP + 50MP dual camera solution. Considering Samsung is the only camera manufacturer that has announced a 200MP sensor, it is safe to say Xiaomi will be using the ISOCELL HP1 sensor, and that the next-gen flagship is a phone in the Xiaomi 12 series. The post also revealed that Xiaomi will continue to use 108MP and 64MP sensors for its mid-range and high-end phones.

It is no surprise that Xiaomi plans to launch a phone with a 200MP camera. The Mi CC9 Pro was the first phone with a 108MP sensor, so it makes sense that Xiaomi will want to be one of the first to launch a phone with a 200MP camera.

Apple Watch Series 7 shipments could be delayed due to production issues

Apple has now confirmed that the company will be hosting its next launch event on 14th September. While the tech giant has not confirmed what devices it plans to launch at this “California Streaming” event, it’s pretty evident that the iPhone 13 series is expected to go official on 14th September.

But the next-generation iPhone isn’t the only product getting launched at the event. Going by the previous record of the company and the rumors, Apple is also set to announce its Watch Series 7 at the same event.

Apple Watch Series 7 Render

However, a new report claims that the actual launch of the Apple Watch Series 7 could be delayed as the company is facing production issues. Currently, there’s not much information available about what the issues are.

This means that while the Apple Watch Series 7 will be announced next week, the new models of the smartwatches won’t be available for purchase until the end of October. But there’s a possibility that instead of delaying the launch for all the models, Apple could only delay the affected models while the rest of them will be available as usual.

If the reports are to be believed, then Apple isn’t focusing much on the health-related features for the upcoming smartwatch but is dedicating efforts for a new design with flatter edges and improving the hardware specs which includes a new display and a new chip.

This time, the Apple Watch Series 7 is expected to come in 41-millimeter and 45-millimeter variants, and the larger model carrying a screen of 1.9-inch. The display is said to use a new lamination technique for bringing the display closer to the protective glass. This new display is what’s causing the production delay.

Apart from the Series 7 models, Apple is also reportedly working on a successor of the Watch SE which is said to launch next year, along with a rugged model which will be targeted at extreme sports users.

Xiaomi surpasses Apple in Q2 2021 to emerge as the world’s No. 1 wearable brand

Data released by Canalys shows that the global wearable market recorded a 5.6% year-on-year growth in Q2 2021 with an estimated 40.9 million wearables shipped during the period. Xiaomi wearable shipment Q1 2021

The report also shows that Chinese tech giant Xiaomi leapfrogged Apple to emerge as the top-selling wearable brand in Q2 2021. Xiaomi’s feat was made possible by the exploit of the Mi Smart Band 6 which performed well despite not launching in India during the period. Xiaomi just launched the Mi Band 6 in India and we expect it to continue to drive sales for the Chinese manufacturer.

Surprisingly, embattled Chinese tech giant Huawei held on to the third spot of which we know the sale is being driven by the Chinese market, one of the world’s largest. Huawei is closely followed by Fitbit with Samsung completing the top 5 spots.Smartwatch market share

Xiaomi’s feat comes at a time the smart band market has been declining, a trend which started in Q4 2020 and extended to the first quarter of this year. Smartwatches are, however, replacing the basic bands and Apple is in the lead in that segment. The Cupertino-based company controls about 31.1% share of the market in Q2 2021.

Huawei occupies the second spot with an estimated 9% share of the market. Others include Garmin with a 7.6% market share, Samsung with a 7% share, and Xiaomi with an estimated market share of 5.7%.

The report noted that smartwatches now account for 62% of global wearable band shipments. We expect this trend to continue as manufacturers are increasingly developing models crammed with loads of vital features. Apple is also expected to hold on to its lead of the market in Q3 and Q4 as it slashes the prices of its current models preparatory to the Watch Series 7 launch. The Watch Series 7 is also expected to drive sales in the fourth quarter when it is released.
