Renders give us an early look at the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 4

Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch Active 4 soon, and when they arrive, they will be running the revamped Wear OS borne from the fusion of Wear OS and Samsung’s Tizen OS. Ahead of the launch, renders of the Active model have surfaced, giving us an early look.

Galaxy Watch Active 4

The Galaxy Watch Active 4 has a refreshed design as seen in the renders courtesy of OnLeaks and GizNext. The frame is wider and flatter and it appears the straps, which now flush with the lugs, are wider too.

The watch retains the two-button design of its predecessor, the Galaxy Watch Active 2, but the back and home buttons are now the same size and shape. The source says the frame will be made of aluminum and the watch will be available in 40mm and 44mm versions. Of course, the difference in sizes also means that apart from different screen sizes, they will also have different battery capacities. Also, while it wasn’t stated, there should be an LTE version whose frame should be made from a different material, most likely stainless steel.

Galaxy Watch Active 4

Samsung will launch the Galaxy Watch Active 4 in four color variants as seen above. Alongside black, there will also be green, silver, and gold. However, the shades may be different from what the renders portray.

The Galaxy Watch Active 4 will have a 5nm processor onboard powering it. We are not sure if the RAM and storage capacity will get a bump. The Galaxy Watch Active 2 launched with 1.5GB of RAM and 4GB of onboard storage.

Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch Active 4 later this month at Mobile World Congress 2021. The Korean giant will not be attending in person but its virtual event is scheduled for June 28.

Vivo’s H2 product lineup: S10 coming next month; iQOO 9, Vivo Watch 2 coming later

Vivo‘s focus for a few months now has been to expand its Y-series of smartphones but that is not the only thing it has been doing. It has also been preparing for the second half of the year when it plans to unveil a number of high-end products. If you are eager to know what the Chinese brand has planned for the second half of the year, then you are at the right place.

vivo S9
The Vivo S9 will get a successor next month

Details of Vivo’s H2 plan have been revealed by the Chinese leaker, Digital Chat Station, on Weibo. According to him, Vivo will kick off its second-half product announcements with the Vivo S10 series next month. That is just four months after the Vivo S9 series was announced.

There is not a lot of info about the Vivo S10 at the moment but we have heard that Vivo will be adopting a new camera layout for the new series. So this may be more of a design upgrade than specification-based. Nevertheless, we expect more details will begin popping up as the launch date draws closer.

The leaker has also revealed that the iQOO 9 series and Vivo X70 series should also launch next quarter. We already reported that the Vivo X70 series will be announced in September in partnership with the Indian Premier League. For the iQOO 9, we do not know a lot about it save for a report in January that said the phone will have a bigger battery capacity than its predecessor.

The source has also reaffirmed that Vivo will launch its first tablet this year along with a new smartwatch. Vivo made its entry into the smartwatch market last year with the Vivo Watch. We don’t know how successful it was but it is nice to know Vivo has plans for a successor. Maybe Vivo will even bring the new model to other markets this time around.

Which of these products are you excited about? Do let us know in the comment box below.

Amazon UK warehouse discovered to regularly destroy tons of unsold items

There are reports that an Amazon UK warehouse in Dunfermline, Scotland, destroyed a huge collection of unsold items in its inventory recently, in what may be an ongoing process. Obviously, there had been some suspicions concerning the operations of the Amazon warehouse in Dunfermline that warranted British TV channel ITV to carry out a covert investigation of the facility.Amazon

There are 24 Amazon holding facilities spread across the United Kingdom, and the Dunfermline warehouse is among the largest in the UK. The purpose of the investigation was to determine what happens to unsold items in the fulfillment center amidst concerns of massive wastage within these warehouses. The outcome of the investigation showed that there were multiple cases of enormous destruction of unsold items within the facility. ITV has extensive and multiple footages of some of these instances where thousands of bins of unsold items were marked “destroy”, with unnamed inside sources claiming that this was a regular occurrence.

Furthermore, there are indications that Amazon may be forcing employees to aim at a target of about 130,000 items destroyed every week. The statistics for the entire chain of UK fulfillment centers would be staggering indeed, running into billions of dollars. It is unclear whether all the marked bins will eventually reach waste dumps or be given out by the company. It is also possible that these items could still find their way back to the market through insider dealings by unscrupulous staff.

Amazon’s multi-billion dollar business thrives on uncluttered warehouses to receive new orders and operate seamlessly. But it is still possible to accomplish this objective by finding better ways of disposing of unsold items for greater economic and environmental impact.

The ITV investigation also established several instances of successful disposal of the marked items in designated landfills and other disposal sites. The report is already drawing the attention of politicians and stakeholders for a more holistic approach to the issue. If indeed these practices are also prevalent in the other centers, then Amazon is leaving a huge carbon footprint on its trail when more companies are embracing sustainability practices.

Samsung W22 5G will reportedly share design with the Galaxy Z Fold 3

There are indications that the upcoming China-only Samsung W22 5G is the Galaxy Z Fold3. A recently sighted online report highlighted that the Z Fold3 and W22 5G (SM-W2022) would be identical in many areas, with slight changes design-wise. It is also almost sure that the new Chinese model will have dual SIM capabilities to suit the Chinese market.Samsung Galaxy W21 5G

The move by Samsung relating to its Chinese version of the Galaxy Z Fold3 follows a visible trend by the maker in naming alternative models for its China offerings in recent years. From 2019, Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy Fold and Z Fold2 to China as the Galaxy W20 and W21.

When the W22 finally berths in China, we also expect it to be supplied exclusively by China Telecom. Not much has been divulged about the W22, but it is known that it will sport a single black color and have 512GB of internal storage.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 is expected to go official in August 2021, and it is unlikely that the W22 5G will be unveiled before then. Not much is known yet about the possible price of the W22 5G, as what is out there is based on speculations. However, we can be confident that the W22 will be priced above CNY 20,000 (~$3,000) which is the amount the W21 was sold in China.

Samsung is yet to put out any public statement either refuting or acknowledging the news, fuelling the speculations further. The coming weeks will however establish the authenticity of the reports relating to the Samsung Galaxy W22.

South Korea unveils $193 million five year project for 6G development

South Korean has just unveiled its five year project for the development of core technologies for 6G telecommunications technology. This plan will have the government invest 220 billion won (roughly 193 million US Dollars).

South Korea

According to an AjuDaily report, South Korea is stepping up its efforts for the joint research and cooperation with the United States of America. The nation is aiming on achieving the world’s first commercialization of 6G mobile telecommunications by the year 2028. This investment was announced earlier today (23rd June 2021) at a 6G strategy meeting that was attended by experts, company officials, and government officials as well.

Science and ICT Minister Lim Hye-sook stated in the conference that “As the next-generation mobile network is the foundation of digital innovation, we should play a bold and challenging role together to lead the international market in the 6th generation era based on our experience and know-how in the network field.” The report also added that a 6G network can only be commercialized when a high performance network on the ground and satellite communication are combined.

South Korea

Furthermore, researchers have also called for the early development of 6G related tech while companies have tied up with research bodies to secure core 6G technologies as well. The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) stated that it is working on the terahertz (THz) frequency band that could potentially provide a way to meet 6G requirements of terabits per second data transfer rate.

Samsung chip with AMD GPU may also ship with Vivo flagship device

While we know that Samsung and AMD are working together for a new chipset that features team red’s GPU, it seems that this chip might not be exclusive to the South Korean tech giant.

Samsung

According to a tipster on Weibo, a Chinese microblogging website, the new chipset that features AMD’s RDNA2 architecture might also ship with flagship smartphones from Vivo. This chip is rumored to be called the Exynos 2200, which will sport processing components from Samsung and graphical components from AMD to offer a more powerful SoC. This chipset is rumored to ship with next-gen flagship from the South Korean firm and even certain laptops as well.

But apparently, the chip will also be available to other vendors as well. The leakster stated that the Chinese smartphone maker will release a device with the new Exynos processor. Although, it is still unclear if the device in question will be a smartphone or another electronic gadget. However, it will likely be a flagship grade product. For those unaware, Vivo is also one of the few handset manufacturers that offer smartphones with Exynos chipsets. Other notable examples being Meizu and Moto.

Samsung

The upcoming Exynos chipset with AMD graphics is said to offer a 30 percent rise in graphical performance compared to the current-gen Exynos 2100’s Mali G78 GPU. The RDNA2 technology also supports new features like ray tracing and variable rate shading as well. So, if the chip manages to be a successful alternative to its rivals, Qualcomm and MediaTek, we can expect more OEMs to opt for Exynos chips in the near future. Unfortunately, this is still an unconfirmed report, so take this news with a pinch of salt and stay tuned for more updates.

LG pivots from phone business to electric cars; aims to focus on EV supply chain

South Korea-based LG Electronics is shutting down its smartphone business and now the company is aiming at the growing electronic vehicle supply chain. By the end of July, LG will exit the phone business and shift its focus towards EV business.

During the same month, LG will spin off its EV drive system segment. Canada’s Magna International, which is one of the world’s leading auto parts suppliers, will buy a 49 percent stake in that unit to create a new joint venture.

LG

The joint venture will be called LG Magna e-Powertrain, will be headquartered in Incheon. The company is also preparing to establish bases in Michigan, the US, and Nanjing, China, aiming to secure customers in two countries that are major markets for EVs.

Canada-based Magna’s customers include major automakers like General Motors, BMW, and Ford Motor. Through the partnership with Magna, LG will have a greater potential to supply global automotive leaders.

LG had reported operating profit in 2015 but each year after that, the company has ended up generating losses. Last year, appliances generated 41 percent of revenue while TVs made up 24 percent. Vehicle components brought in 5.8 trillion won ($5.1 billion), just 11 percent of revenue.

But Magna likely weighed other factors in its choice of LG as a partner. The South Korean company has technological strength in core EV components, such as motors and batteries.

Durable appliances like refrigerators and air conditioners depend on motors, compressors, and other components for their durability and energy efficiency. LG has long years of independent research and development of inverters.

LG can also draw on the strength of other members of the LG group, which includes LG Chem — the world’s second-biggest producer of EV batteries — and panel maker LG Display and LG Innotek, which supplies onboard cameras for autos.

The company launched an internal team for automotive components in 2013 in anticipation of the growth of electric vehicles. In 2018, LG made Austrian headlight supplier ZKW into a subsidiary. LG has taken a three-pronged strategy for its automotive business, consisting of headlights, drive components and infotainment, which includes car navigation and audio.

LG forecasts the vehicle components division to turn a profit for the first time in six years in 2021. The company aims to expand sales at an annual pace of 15%. This would turn vehicle components into one of LG’s largest segments, with more than 10 trillion won in annual sales in 2024.

Google faces antitrust investigation in India over smart TV market

Competition Commission of India has just ordered an investigation into Google. The company has allegedly abused its dominant position of Android in the region’s smart TV market.

Google

According to a TechCrunch report, the news arrives hours after the European Union opened a formal antitrust investigation into the Search engine giant for abusing its leading role in the advertising technology sector. As per the Competition Commission of India’s initial review, which began back in 2020, Google has breached certain anti competitive laws in the region. Thus, it is now facing an investigation of this scale that could apparently take up to a year to resolve.

The agency added that “The Commission is of the prima facie opinion that by making pre-installation of Google’s proprietary apps (particularly Play Store) conditional upon signing of ACC (Android Compatibility Commitments) for all Android devices manufactured/distributed/marketed by device manufacturers, Google has reduced the ability and incentive of device manufacturers to develop and sell devices operating on alternative versions of Android i.e. Android forks, and thereby limited technical or scientific development relating to goods or services to the prejudice of consumers in contravention of Section 4(2)(b) of the Act.”

Google

For those unaware, India is one of the largest markets by users for Google. Back in 2020, the company even pledged investing 10 billion US Dollars in the nation. In 2019 alone, 8 million smart TVs were sold in India, out of which 60 percent were powered by the Android OS. Now, a spokesperson has stated that the company is denying all allegations and added that “We are confident that our smart TV licensing practices are in compliance with all applicable competition laws.”

One in Four smartphones sold in 2020 were bought online: Counterpoint

Back in 2020, the online purchases of smartphones accounted for about 26 percent of all sales in the global market. This means that one in every four smartphones that were bought were purchased from online channels.

Smartphones

According to a Counterpoint Research report, the Coronavirus pandemic was a major factor that boosted the online sales in multiple countries. Key regions includes India that showcased the highest online share at 45 percent, along with UK with 39 percent and China arriving in at 34 percent. This implies that the share of online smartphone sales in 2020 rose by 6 percent over a year prior. For market size, it marked an increase of more than 10 percent.

Furthermore, this trend was also recorded in other regions as well, like the US and Europe. Emerging markets like Latin America also benefited from this trend. Notably, the US and India recorded highest ever online share in the second half of last year. While the market saw a sizeable growth in online sales, this trend is also expected to slow down for some time, with online sales in 2021 being similar to but slightly lower than last year.

Smartphones

Senior Analyst Sujeong Lim stated that “After the rapid growth in 2020, we expect 2021 to see some easing after the COVID-19 vaccination. However, it is expected to grow slightly every year from 2022 onwards, supported by growth in emerging markets and the middle-aged population becoming more accustomed to IT devices and internet use. But in the case of India, which currently has the highest online proportion, it may decrease to a certain level after 2022 due to the development of offline infrastructure such as multi-brand stores and large-scale retail stores. On the other hand, the future growth of the online market in SEA and MEA is noteworthy.”
