A recent listing on Jingdong (JD.com) for the Mi 9 Transparent Edition brought to light the need to properly check if the memory variant on offer for any smartphone officially exists. The Mi 9 Transparent Edition was listed with an 8GB+128GB variant but the Mi 9 Transparent edition is only available in 8GB+256GB and 12GB+256GB memory variants.
The error was spotted by a netizen who reached out to Xiaomi‘s product director Wang Teng-Thomas to find out if such memory variant existed. The product director revealed that the Mi 9 Transparent edition with 8GB+128GB storage wasn’t produced. But then, the model was listed with a price tag of 3359 yuan, lower than the 3999 yuan price for the 8GB+256GB variant. Except Xiaomi is working on the 128GB storage variant, the listing could be fraudulent. Even the 3999 yuan price for the 256GB variant is higher than that on Xiaomi’s official website where the 8GB+256GB variant of the Mi 9 Transparent version is listed for 3699 yuan. Our check reveals the option to select 8GB+128GB variant for the Mi 9 Transparent Edition has been disabled.
The Mi 9 is Xiaomi’s flagship for 2019. It has an 8GB+128GB variant, as well as 6GB+128GB. The Transparent version is available in 8GB+256GB and 12GB+256GB memory.

All the latest news regarding Meizu has been about their upcoming device, the Meizu 16Xs. While I’m quite eager to see that device considering I love Meizu, some other news has shown up that’s also quite interesting. A Meizu product manager teased a poster on Weibo that basically confirms Flyme 8 is imminent, and promptly deleted it. Will we see it launch alongside the Meizu 16Xs on the 30th of May?
It makes a lot of sense to launch a new version of their UI alongside a new device. It lets you show off all the new functions on shiny new hardware, and it’s just an effective way to build excitement. Google does it, Xiaomi does it, and Meizu’s been doing it for a long time now. If it’s true, then it adds to the list of things I’ll be excited to see come the Meizu 16Xs launch day.
The Meizu 16Xs will be arriving with a notch-less display of 6.2 inches. The AMOLED screen will offer full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2232 pixels and 18.5:9 aspect ratio. The display of the phone will be embedded with an in-screen fingerprint reader. The handset will be backed by a 4,000mAh battery, and may feature a 48MP triple camera setup.
We’ve no idea what SoC the device will come with, since we’ve received conflicting reports. It’s possible we’ll see a Snapdragon 710, but newer reports claim a Snapdragon 675. On top of all this, we’ve got the new features we can expect to see from Flyme 8 that we have yet to hear about. It’s certainly quite an exciting time to be a Meizu fan, and I can’t wait to see what comes out of it.
Following their success of selling 10 million Redmi Note 7 units, Xiaomi‘s decided to do something nice for their fans. Xiaomi are giving their Chinese Mi-fans free headphones with every purchase of a Redmi Note 7. These aren’t just any run-of-the-mill earbuds either, they’re Xiaomi’s own Mi in-ear Headphones Pro. They don’t come all that cheap.
For those not in the know, Xiaomi co-founder Lei Jun announced the milestone earlier yesterday. He shared the news alongside photos of the Xiaomi and Redmi team sharing celebratory cake. Jun said the milestone is a victory and a testament of “holding Xiaomi values, such as high quality and value for your money”.
While the 10 million Redmi Note 7 units include variants like the Redmi Note 7S, it’s still an impressive feat. What’s going to be interesting is seeing this affects Xiaomi in the future. The Redmi Note 8 will have to be something monumentally different if they want people to jump from the Note 7. It’s almost an impossible task considering how good the Redmi Note 7 line is.
Lei Jun also took some time to remind everyone about the upcoming Redmi K20 launch tomorrow. With the Redmi Note 7 series doing so well around the world, we’re eager to see how the Redmi K20 will turn out. Will it garner the same positive reaction, and how will the higher price work out? We’ll have to wait until tomorrow’s launch event to find out.

The Motorola One Vision that was announced earlier in this month features a 6.3-inch IPS LCD panel with an impressive tall aspect ratio of 21:9. The display carries support for full HD+ resolution and it features a punch-hole at its top-left corner for the 25-megapixel selfie snapper.

Meizu will be launching the Meizu 16Xs smartphone on May 30. The smartphone will be announced as the successor for the Meizu 16X smartphone from 2018. The Meizu 16Xs will be the company’s first smartphone to arrive with triple rear cameras. The entire specifications of the smartphone have been leaked through its TENAA listing. Yesterday, the smartphone was also spotted on Geekbench benchmarking platform.
Three listings of the Meizu 16Xs phone had appeared on Geekbench yesterday. As it can be seen in the below image, the Meizu 16Xs has scored around 23XX in the single-core tests and around 59XX in the multi-core tests. Unfortunately, none of the listings clearly reveal the name of the processor that powers the smartphone. The unidentified SoC of the Meizu 16Xs is assisted by 6 GB of RAM. The handset runs on Android 9 Pie OS.
The TENAA listing of the Meizu 16Xs states that it is powered by an octa-core processor that works at 2.0 GHz. ASUS has announced a new portable touch display at the on-going Computex expo in Taipei, Taiwan, ASUS had its own event today and it was a double one as it also celebrated its 30th anniversary with products like the Zenfone 6 30th Anniversary Edition and the ZenBook Edition 30. Alongside these two products, it also unveiled a bunch of other products, one of which is the ZenScreen Touch.
The ZenScreen Touch is a portable touch display with a 15.6-inch IPS panel. It supports 10-point multi-touch, weighs 900 grams and is 9mm thick. There is a USB-C port which doubles as a power port and a display port. There is also a Micro-HDMI port. In the case of the latter, the ZenScreen Touch draws power from its built-in 7800mAh battery which ASUS claims can last up to 4 hours on a single charge. The monitor has a built-in case that also doubles as a kickstand when folded back.
The ZenScreen Touch has 2 x 1W speakers. ASUS says it works with Android devices running Android 6.0 and up with support for various aspect ratios, different resolutions and physical hotkeys. There is a dedicated app for use with your Android phone called the ZenScreen Touch App. The portable monitor also works with Windows 10.
The ZenScreen Touch can be used in various ways. It can serve as a larger canvas for your phone’s display; you can use it as a second monitor for your computer; or as an external display for your Nintendo Switch.
ASUS says it will launch later this year but didn’t reveal a specific date. Its price was also not revealed.

Earlier this year, DxOMark Labs began ranking the selfie camera of smartphones. Up until today, the selfie king has been the Galaxy S10 5G with a score of 97. It has now been dethroned by the Zenfone 6 with an overall score of 98.
DxOMark has given the Zenfone 6 a photo score of 101, same as the Galaxy S10 5G and then surpasses it with a video score of 93, the best so far. The Zenfone 6 is able to achieve this because it uses its rear cameras (48MP + 13MP) for taking selfies thanks to the mechanical motor built into the camera module.
DxOMark praises its color rendering, white balance, and exposure. It also has a good dynamic range and focuses very well thanks to the laser-focus and PDAF system. The Zenfone 6 also provides “natural bokeh” when taking one-person selfies but struggles when it is a group selfie. With the dual-LED flash, you also don’t have to worry about your selfies coming out dark, however, you do have to deal with red eyes.
The Zenfone 6 beats the competition in video recording. It records in 4K by default with exceptional detail and low noise both indoors and under bright light. You can read the full review here if you wish.
Huawei FreeLace is the wireless earphones that I’ve been using for the past couple of months. Here is our long-term review.
DESIGN, COMFORT, BATTERY LIFE
The earphones cost about $100 meaning one would expect premium design and build quality.
The headset uses high-grade “Memory Metal Cable” that feels sturdy, it’s tangle-free and it has always felt nice on my neck.
I like that the earbuds have magnets, so you can attach them to each other. The built-in Hall magnetic sensor can detect whether the headphones are in use. You can attach to end the connection for longer battery life. And, when you separate, it will reconnect and get you back to your music.
One of the highlights – you can detach the right earphone from the controller and you will find USB-C plug for charging. In fact, you can plug the earphones to the phone USB-C port and the phone will act as a power bank. It’s a pretty neat feature to have. Further, the earphones support HUAWEI HiPair technology. Once plugged in the phone, the FreeLace can be paired automatically.
Battery life has been great. I could easily achieve 18 hours of music playback (Huawei’s official claim). The device also supports fast charging.
Just 5 mins of charging using your phone (I used the P30 Pro) will give you 4 hours of music playback.
SOUND QUALITY
The Freelace uses 9.2 mm dynamic driver unit which ensures great sound quality. The sound is deep, crisp, clear and there is plenty of bass. Really premium sound experience.
OTHER FEATURES AND TEST NOTES
I am really impressed with the call quality as noise reduction has been really good. Also, Bluetooth has been working fine and the IPX5 rating assures that the device won’t break if you drop it into water.
CONCLUSIONS
Overall, I’m quite impressed with the Huawei Freelace. Sure, these are not the only earphones on the market but I found them to be really comfortable to wear, sound quality is really good, battery life is superb and USB-C charging/fast pairing with the phone is an innovative and useful feature to have.
The earphones have been my daily driver for the past couple of months and I will keep using them. Therefore, I can recommend them to check out.
The Zenfone 6 launched less than 2 weeks ago and it has been touted as ASUS’ best smartphone till date. The phone comes in three variants – 6GB RAM + 64GB, 6GB+ 128GB, and 8GB + 256GB. Today, ASUS unveiled a fourth variant which brings more RAM and storage. This limited edition variant has been released to celebrate the manufacturer’s 30th anniversary.
The Zenfone 6 30th Anniversary Editon comes with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. With the dedicated MicroSD card slot, you can have almost 1TB of space if you grab a 512GB MicroSD card. Apart from the increase in RAM and storage, this limited edition also has a Matte Black finish with ASUS’ familiar concentric circle design and a special anniversary logo. The rest of the specs are the same as the other variants.
You get a Gorilla Glass 6 protected 6.4-inch Nano Edge IPS LCD with a 92% screen-to-body ratio and a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. A Snapdragon 855 processor, a 5000mAh battery with Quick Charge 4.0, and a 48MP + 13MP dual rear camera combo that flips forward to double as the selfie cameras too. ASUS has also promised the phone will get updated to Android Q and Android R.
ASUS hasn’t released any details with respect to pricing and availability. Though they did say there will just be 3000 units available globally and the limited edition will have a 30-month warranty. Nevertheless, we expect it to sell for about €699.
ASUS also announced a ZenBook Edition 30 which ditches aluminum or plastic for genuine Italian leather and 18-karat rose gold plated ASUS emblems along with matching premium accessories.
