Huawei Mate X Questions answered: Durability, App support and more

A couple of days ago at MWC 2019, Huawei announced the mate X, a foldable display device. It attracted a lot of attention from global media and is set to compete with Samsung Galaxy Fold. Along with the foldable display there comes many new questions that every customer wants to ask before buying it. In order to address these queries, He Gang, president of Huawei terminal mobile product line took a media session.

Mr Gang responded to the question on the device’s durability like how many times it can fold and unfold before breaking? He said that the company had not measured the exact number of counts. Huawei is testing the new device via different means, and still many tests are left. Before the actual launch, Huawei ensures that the device will definitely meet the consumers’ requirements.

In order to provide a seamless experience to users, the Apps should also follow new design rules. Well, commenting on the App development, Gang said that it is not a big trouble for the company. Huawei has already done a lot to improve the app experience on Mate X. It easily fits the tablet viewport when we unfold the device. It is quite comfortable for Apps to transform into a tablet view.

He Gang further emphasised that Huawei has taken care of the durability and usability of the Mate X. The foldable display will not act as a barrier for the daily usage of the smartphone. There won’t be any display issue which will interfere in its smooth usage.

Also, to get actual usage figures, we have to wait for a couple of years. As Mate X is a new kind of device and it would be quite difficult to comment on its usage, durability without having exact figures.

Additionally, it holds a 1.8GHz Kirin 980 SoC with 8 GB RAM. It is coupled with Balong 5000 5G modem chipset and comes with 512 GB internal storage. The new device carries a flexible 8-inch display with the resolution of 2200 x 2480 pixels. Mate X gives a viewport of 6.6 inches with the resolution of 1148 x 2480 pixels when folded. There are quad cameras on the device consisting of a 40-megapixel wide primary lens + 16-megapixel sensor for ultrawide photos + 8-megapixel telephoto lens and a ToF camera.

Meizu Note 9 shows off what its cameras can do in this picture sample

Meizu will announce its new mid-range phone, the Meizu Note 9 on March 6. The phone is expected to be the manufacturer’s answer to Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7 Pro. Ahead of the launch next week, a picture taken with the phone has surfaced.

The Meizu Note 9 will come with dual rear cameras – a 48MP primary sensor and a 5MP secondary sensor. There is no confirmation yet but it has been reported that the phone uses the same Samsung ISOCELL GM1 sensor as the Redmi Note 7.

The picture above is of the La Sagrada Familia, an uncompleted Roman Catholic church in Barcelona and was shared by Meizu’s VP, Li Nan. It isn’t a super wide-angle image but the Meizu Note 9 does a great job at capturing most of the building.

On a side note, since the picture was taken in Barcelona, we know the Meizu Note 9 is at MWC. Maybe someone will provide live photos of the device before the event is over.

The Meizu Note 9 will also come with a 20MP front-facing camera that is housed within the notch of its 6.2-inch FHD+ display.

Sony Xperia 5G prototype smartphone showcased at MWC 2019

This year at MWC 2019, various manufacturers showcased their abilities endeavouring the new 5G technology. Majority of the manufacturers announced the 5G supported devices which are slated to make debut in Q2 2019. In latest, Sony has joined the list of awaited 5G supported devices with its prototype device. The new device has been showcased at the MWC 2019 in Barcelona at Sony and Qualcomm booths.

It seems a decade of new technologies have just started with the announcement of folding smartphones from Samsung and Huawei. On the other hand, 5G technology support is gaining pace, and the initial batch of compatible devices have made an appearance at the Mobile World Congress.

As per our folks at Pocket-lint, they have spotted a Sony 5G prototype device at both Sony and Qualcomm booths. It was unlikely to get the full information about the device by just looking at it as the device was encased. Later talking to Adam Marsch, Sony’s global communications team, our source came to know that it is not a commercial but a testing product. Although, they even confirmed that the actual models would differ from the current prototype. Currently, multiple devices with minor hardware changes are going through different tests. The real purpose of minor hardware changes is to“trying to understand [what would happen] if you take an antenna away from a certain place and make it thinner”.

The prototype models are running on Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset. It is even likely that the company would have coupled Snapdragon 855 with the X50 5G modem. The display measurements were not available, but it showed 21:9 aspect ratio. Sony has labelled the new device as “AG-1” internally as told by Adam Marsh. It uses 5mm wave for the 5G transmission along with sub 6 spectrum support.

Speaking further, Adam said that Sony is working on 5G technology but don’t have plans for any commercial product launch yet. It might come with a 5G device in the near future. The exact time frame is still unknown, although, it has been made clear that Sony is working on new 5G technology.

It has been speculated that Sony could come with a commercial 5G smartphone at IFA 2019 in September. It could be another version of recently launched Sony Xperia 1 which runs Snapdragon 855.

Huawei’s 55W SuperCharge technology will be exclusive to the Mate X for the time being

A couple of says, at its pre-MWC 2019 event in Barcelona, Huawei took the wraps off its flagship smartphone — Huawei Mate X. The phone is also the first from the China-based company to have a flexible display and 5G connectivity.

Apart from the foldable display and the 5G connectivity, another major feature that the smartphone comes with is support for Huawei’s next-generation of SuperCharge technology that offers 55W fast charging.

Now, Huawei’s President of Consumer Business and Mobile Products has revealed that the 55W SuperCharge technology will be exclusive for the Mate X smartphone for some time and the company has no plans to expand it to other devices.

He further added that offering 55W SuperCharge in Huawei Mate X is possible because the phone comes with two batteries so it’s possible to charge them faster simultaneously. Compared to Mate X, other smartphones come with just a single cell unit.

Huawei‘s Mate-series smartphones, which has been the company’s flagship lineup since the past few years, currently offers 40W fast charging. The clarification from the Huawei’s executive makes it clear that we should not expect the 55W fast charging in other smartphones anytime soon.

To remind you, the Huawei Mate X has a large 8” screen with a 2480 x 2200 resolution and an 8:7.1 aspect ratio when unfolded with a pretty thin bezel. When folded, It becomes a dual display phone – one side is a 6.6-inch (2480 x 1148) 19.5:9 display while the other is a 6.38-inch (2480 x 892) 25:9 display.

It is powered by the Kirin 980 paired with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. It has dual SIM support but only SIM 1 supports 5G. The 7nm Balong 5000 modem brings 5G support to the device. There are three cameras on the back of the Mate X which also double as the selfie cameras. The cameras were co-developed with Leica and are made up of a 40MP wide-angle lens, a 16MP ultra-wide angle lens, and an 8MP telephoto lens.

The Huawei Mate X runs EMUI 9.1.1 based on Android 9 Pie and comes with NFC, dual-frequency GPS, Bluetooth 5.0 for connectivity. As said, the company has split its battery into two for a total capacity of 4,500mAh. Huawei has also debuted its new 55W SupercCharge fast charging technology which is claimed to charge the device from empty to 85 percent in just 30 minutes.

Last month, along with the Honor View 20 flagship smartphone, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer had also launched its two wearable devices in the Indian market — Honor Band 4 Running Edition and Honor Watch Magic.

While the Honor Watch Magic recently went on sale in India, the company has now started selling the Honor Band 4 Running Edition in the Indian market. Carrying a price tag of Rs. 1,599 (approximately $23), the new fitness tracker is available for purchase through Amazon India.

In addition to tracking activities, the device also shows notifications on the OLED display and even offers an incoming call-mute function. The device also comes with built-in NFC support, meaning that it can also be used to make payments. Under the hood, the fitness tracker is powered by a 100mAh battery, which the company claims can deliver standby time of up to 14 days.

The Honor Band 4 Running Edition is available in a slew of different color options, including Black, Blue, Red, Yellow, Green, and Pink. However, currently, it’s available in Red and Green colors only.

Nokia 9 PureView camera samples reveal its stunning photography prowess

On Sunday, HMD Global had announced couple of smartphones such as Nokia 210, Nokia 1 Plus, Nokia 3.2, Nokia 4.2 and Nokia 9 PureView. Except for the last one, others are all budget-friendly devices. The Nokia 9 PureView is the world’s first smartphone to feature five rear-mounted cameras. A Chinese publication has shared couple of sample shots that were captured using the Nokia 9 PureView handset.

The back panel of the Nokia 9 PureView has 7 round-shaped cutouts on its rear shell. It includes an LED flash, a 3D ToF (Time of Flight) sensor and the remaining are five 12-megapixel sensors. The ZEISS branded penta-lens setup include a pair of 12-megapixel RGB sensors and three 12-megapixel monochrome sensors.

When a user snaps a photo using the Nokia 9 PureView, all the five camera sensors function simultaneously to capture the image with different exposure like the Light L16 camera that features 16 camera sensors. Multi-frame synthesis algorithm kicks in to synthesize an image with topnotch quality.

The five cameras can collect tenfold more light than a conventional camera setup. Also, the presence of a ToF sensors creates a depth map for depth of field rendering. The publication that has shared the camera samples of the Nokia 9 PureView has claimed that the Nokia 9 PureView is equipped with Light’s ISP since Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor synthesis of up to three shots. Nokia 9 PureView comes preinstalled with Lightroom. By using it, users can edit the RAW photo.

Huawei P30 live shots leak well ahead of launch

Huawei has just unveiled the Mate X as its first foldable smartphone. Powered by Kirin 980 chipset and Balong 5G modem, the Mate X is a 5G ready device that promises topnotch performance. On March 26, the Chinese manufacturer will be launching the P30 series of flagship phones. The Huawei P30 is expected to come equipped with triple rear cameras and the P30 Pro is expected to sport a quad camera setup on its rear. Live photos of the dummy unit of the Huawei P30 have been revealed by Digital Trends to reveal its design in real.

Before the official announcement of the Huawei P20, its images were leaked with “Shirley” branding instead of Huawei. Shirley was the internal codename of the Huawei P20 phone. Fresh images of a smartphone with “Vogue” branding have been leaked. Recent reports have revealed that the Vogue is an internal codename of the one of the P30 smartphones. Since the leaked images reveal that the handset is equipped with triple rear cameras, it is being speculated that it could be the Huawei P30 handset.

The vertical triple camera setup is followed by a LED flash unit that seems to feature an autofocus sensor. The VOGUE and LINK branding on the rear are expected to be respectively replaced by Huawei and Leica brand names.

The glass back panel of the phone has a chrome finish. There is no fingerprint reader on the rear. Rumors surrounding the phone have claimed that it will be equipped with an in-screen fingerprint reader. The edge of the phone is fitted with a volume rocker and a power key. The handset does not feature a 3.5mm audio. There is a USB-C slot on the bottom of the device.

There are no images of the front panel of the phone. Rumors surrounding the handset have revealed that it will be equipped with an OLED panel with a waterdrop notch that will deliver full HD+ resolution. The Kirin 980 will be the driving force of the smartphone.

The publication that has leaked the images of the dummy unit has claimed that it is the Huawei P30 Pro smartphone. However, as mentioned above, its design suggests that it could be the Huawei P30 smartphone.

Nubia Alpha is a foldable smartwatch that acts like a smartphone

With foldable smartphones from the likes of Samsung and Huawei are getting all the attention because of their novel design and unique use-cases, ZTE‘s sub-brand Nubia has announced a device that is totally different from what others are offering — Nubia Alpha.

Nubia Alpha is a wearable device with a foldable display which looks to be acting like a smartphone. Basically, Nubia Alpha is more of a smartphone in the form factor of a smartwatch — a standalone wearable device.

It features a 4-inch flexible OLED display but appears a lot bigger because of its ultra-wide aspect ratio. The display offers 960 x 192 pixels screen resolution which seems to be offering 5:1 or 49:9 aspect ratio.

While the company addresses the device to be a smartphone, it actually is a smartwatch. Under the hood, the device is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 chipset, coupled with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage.

It also comes with fitness-related features such as sleep-tracking and health-assistant apps. The device also features a 5-megapixel camera for taking photos and video recording. The Nubia Alpha is fuelled by a 500mAh battery which promises a day or two of endurance, comparable to smartphones.

ASUS ZenFone 6 will go official on May 16

ASUS had launched the ZenFone 5 series at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) tech trade fair in February last year. Hence, the rumor has been speculating that the Taiwanese company will use the MWC 2019 event this year to announce the ZenFone 6 series. It was recently reported that some journalists at the MWC 2019 had come across a magazine that showcased all the previous generations of ZenFone smartphones. However, ASUS has now confirmed through a tweet it will be unleashing the ZenFone 6 on May 16 in Valencia, Spain through a standalone event.

The official tweet only confirms the launch date of the ZenFone 6. The company is likely to unveil successors for the ZenFone 5 Lite, ZenFone 5 and ZenFone 5Z flagship phone. The “DEFY ORIGINAL” and “Revolution is coming” texts on the tweet reveals that the ZenFone 6 may sport an offbeat design.

The live photos of the rumored ZenFone 6 had leaked around three weeks ago. It had revealed the rear design of the Black and Red-Violet color gradient editions of the smartphone. The rear panel of the phone was spotted with a vertical triple camera setup along with an LED flash. The fingerprint scanner is not available on the backside of the phone. Hence, there is a possibility that the phone could be equipped with an under-display fingerprint reader or it could be sporting a thicker chin with front-mounted fingerprint reader. The leak did not reveal the front design of the phone.

There is no information available on the specifications of the ZenFone 6 phones. However, there is a high possibility that the ZenFone 6 could be equipped with Snapdragon 855 SoC.

There were couple of leaks last year that suggested that the ZenFone 6 could be arriving with a punch-hole display design. There is a possibility that it may sport a slider design. Xiaomi has already confirmed that it will be launching the Redmi Note 7 smartphone in India on Feb. 28. It is speculated that the company will be announcing multiple devices on the same day. A new leak reveals that the Chinese manufacturer will be launching the Redmi Note 7 Pro, Redmi Go and Mi Sports Bluetooth Headset Youth Edition in India alongside the Redmi Note 7 on Thursday.

Redmi Note 7 Price, Variants and Key Specs

The leak states that Redmi Note 7 will be available in two models in India such as 3 GB RAM + 32 GB storage and 4 GB RAM + 64 GB storage. These models could be respectively priced at 9,999 and Rs. 11,999. The Redmi Note 7 for India could be different from the same phone that was launched in China in January.

According to the leak, the Redmi Note 7 for India will be powered by Snapdragon 636. It’s the same SoC that powers the Redmi Note 6 Pro and Redmi Note 5 Pro smartphones in the country. Also, it will be equipped with f/2.2 aperture Sony IMX486 12-megapixel main sensor on the rear and a front-facing camera of OV13855 13-megapixel. It appears that China’s Redmi Note 7 will be releasing in India as Redmi Note 7 Pro since the leak states that the Pro variant will be equipped with Snapdragon 660, Samsung ISOCELL Bright GM1 48-megapixel primary sensor for dual rear cameras and OV13855 13-megapixel frontal camera.

The Redmi Note 7 Pro is expected to go official in this week in China. The smartphone has surfaced on the database of China’s TENAA authority with minimum specs. Good thing is that the listing also has the images of the phone. Also, reliable tipster Ishan Agarwal has shared the press renders of the smartphone. He has claimed that the Redmi Note 7 Pro will be debuting alongside the Redmi Note 7 handset in India on Feb. 28.

Redmi Note 7 Pro TENAA

The Redmi Note 7 Pro that has a model number of M1901F7BE has appeared with its images on TENAA. The images reveal that the Pro model resembles with the regular Redmi Note 7 from its front and rear sides.

The glass rear of the phone has a gradient finish with a dual camera setup and a fingerprint scanner placed on it. On its frontside is a waterdrop notch enabled display. The 159.2 x 75.2 x 8.1mm dimensions of the Redmi Note 7 Pro is also exactly same as the Redmi Note 7. It is fitted with a 6.3-inch display and its packed with a 4,000mAh battery. The TENAA listing of the Redmi Note 7 Pro is yet to be populated with its full specs.

Recent reports have revealed that the Redmi Note 7 Pro heading to China will have Sony IM586 48-megapixel + 5-megapixel dual camera setup, 6 GB of RAM, Snapdragon 675 and 128 GB of storage.

Here’s what Apple’s foldable iPhone, dubbed iPhone X Fold unofficially, could look like

Foldable smartphones seem to be the trend that would dominate this year in the mobile phone industry. The innovative design style has for long been a hot topic in the rumour mills, with several patent filings spotted online. Last year, a relatively unknown Chinese phone maker Royole showcased the Flexpai which is the first practical foldable phone to be unveiled. The phone is still some distance from going commercial but since then, several other OEMs have revealed their own designs such as Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO. Last week, Samsung unveiled its own foldable phone dubbed Galaxy Fold and over the weekend, Huawei did the same thing with the Mate X. Lenovo may soon join the train.

As with all trend in the industry, other OEMs are expected to join the bandwagon especially when that design turns out to be popular. We saw that with the notch screen design which became a hot trending design after Apple released the iPhone X. This time around, Apple isn’t pioneering the foldable phone design but we expect the US company to catch up with the trend soon.

In case you are trying to picture what a foldable iPhone will look like, the guys at tech website, Foldable New have published a concept render of the iPhone X foldable phone. The concept design is actually the brainchild of Dutch industrial designer Roy Gilsing who created the design at the request of Foldable News. The phone was named iPhone X Fold employing Samsung’s naming pattern, ala Galaxy Fold. Just like the Galaxy Fold, the iPhone X Fold comes with two screens, an outer display with 1:3 aspect ratio and a wider display with a 2:3 aspect ratio. When it is folded, we must admit the concept looks nothing like an iPhone but like the regular Android phone. But when it is unfolded, you get a tablet which looks like an iPad. The device can also be folded partially to turn it into a mini-notebook with a touchscreen keyboard.

It is doubtful if Apple will release a foldable phone with this sort of design. We still don’t know how Apple’s foldable iPhone will look like. Apple already has several foldable phone design patents in its kitty so it is a question of when rather than if the Cupertino-based company will release a foldable phone.

Qualcomm announces its next-gen 5G modem-integrated processor!

The 5G race is just gathering pace gradually but US chipmaker Qualcomm isn’t planning to let off some steam in its bid to outpace its competitors. The fabless chip manufacturer is already unveiling its third chipset for 5G technology which will deliver ultra-fast network. Just like Qualcomm, Samsung is also striving to retain its position as the world’s number one phone maker. And one way it plans to retain its position is through innovation and adoption of the latest technology. Thus, it is no surprise that Samsung is gearing to use the chipset in future Galaxy S devices.

Qualcomm has got other 5G processors but this is the first chipset that integrates its 5G modem technology with the Snapdragon applications processor that powers all the processes on smartphones. The Snapdragon X50 5G chip integrated with the latest Snapdragon855 processor and the recently unveiled Snapdragon X55 modem are standalone modems that worked alongside the main computing processor. The new 5G chip operates in a different way. In a press release, Qualcomm’s president Cristiano Amon, “The integration of our breakthrough 5G multimode modem and application processing technologies into a single SoC is a major step in making 5G more widely available across regions and tiers.”

Apart from Huawei devices, all 5G phones that are expected to be released this year will likely run on Qualcomm’s SoC. This makes this integrated 5G processor a major breakthrough for the company. Rivals like Intel which supplies Apple modems and MediaTek are not expected to have 5G chips in phones until next year. So, there’s ample time for Qualcomm to advance its technology before rolling out this improved chipset next year. The integration of the 5G modem with the application processor helps reduce power consumption and the amount of space the chips take up in a device, letting phones be even sleeker than before or pack in even larger batteries.

Qualcomm’s president disclosed that Samsung will be the first company to work with Qualcomm on its integrated 5G chip. This position was reportedly corroborated by June Hee Lee, the head of Samsung’s technology strategy team.
