Vivo Y81 launched in India in a new version with fingerprint scanner

Vivo Y81 was launched in Vietnam back in June with an innovative design and a very affordable price tag. Now, it is finally headed to the bigger Indian market, but in a slightly different version. Unlike the model launched in Vietnam which does not feature any biometric sensor, this one has a fingerprint reader on the rear side. The rest of the specs sheet remains the same as the older version, including the tri-borderless display with a notch and its very high screen-to-body ratio.

Xiaomi Pocophone F1 destroys the competition with impressive results on Geekbench

Xiaomi Pocophone F1 is now shining on Geekbench a few days ahead of the official launch. This smartphone has been defined by the new Xiaomi sub-brand as the Master of Speed, and according to the new Geekbench listing the company is right. Indeed, the device has obtained impressive results on the known benchmarking platform, better than any real non-gaming devices. The handset has scored 9081 points in multi-core performance, over classing flagships such as OnePlus 6, Xiaomi Mi 8 and Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, while it has scored 2467 points in single-core performance in which the only better device is the Samsung Galaxy S9+.

The added value of Xiaomi Pocophone F1 over the competition is that it should be the cheapest device ever equipped with an octa-core Snapdragon 845, the best SoC by Qualcomm running at a frequency of 2.8 GHz. The device has been recently spotted on pre-sale with a price tag of just €430,  that is €50 lower than the cheapest Snapdragon 845-powered handset: the Asus Zenfone 5z. However, this price is yet to be officially confirmed. According to the latest photo and video leaks, Xiaomi Pocophone F1 will be the only SD845-powered flagship to sport a full polycarbonate design in order to cut costs.

This may be a good decision for people who only care about performance and not price. Among the other alleged specs, there is a 5.99-inch display with a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2248 pixels, a notch and a tri-borderless design with a thicker chin. Paired with the Snapdragon 845 there should be 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. The main camera will be a dual setup with resolutions of 12 and 5 MP, while the front camera should have a 20 MP resolution. At last, there will be a big battery with a capacity of 4000 mAh.

Samsung patents self-repairing oleophobic coating for phones

My daily driver is the Essential PH-1 (Black Moon) and as beautiful as the phone is, it lives in a case. The sole reason is that it is a fingerprint magnet (and a slippery eel). Take it out of the case and in under a minute it goes from being the most beautiful phone to looking like a mess. This is the same experience for a lot of users who have phones made of glass or ceramic (depending on the finish). However, it appears Samsung has a solution.

The Korean giant has gotten a patent for an oleophobic coating that can “repair” itself. The patent was published by the WIPO earlier this month and it states that the composition includes a polyrotaxane, a polyhedral silsesquioxane and a fluorinated (meth)acryl compound.

Samsung Self-Healing Oleophobic Composition

According to the patent description, devices usually have a tempered glass or a coating to protect the display. When this glass or coating gets broken or scratched, they can’t return to their original shape. They also can’t be used for flexible devices. So Samsung has developed a coating that self-repairs, can be applied to a film (tempered glass) and can be used for a foldable electronic device.

Samsung is working on a foldable smartphone which will have a flexible display. One can deduce that the newly patented composition or film will be used in the device when it launches next year. Apart from being able to heal itself, the composition also has oleophobic properties. So not only can it be applied to the display, it can also be applied to the back of the phone.

Xiaomi will launch the Mi Band 3 alongside the Mi Max 3 in Taiwan on August 24

Xiaomi has revealed the launch of the Mi Band 3 for the Taiwanese market will hold on August 24. The company had earlier launched the Mi 8, Redmi 6 and Mi A2 in Taiwan towards the end of July but the Mi Band 3 wasn’t bundled along with the trio. Instead, the Mi Band 3 will be launched alongside the Mi Max 3 that had earlier been scheduled to launch on August 24.Mi Band 3

The Mi Band 3 was first launched in China on May 31 along with the Mi 8, Mi 8 SE and Mi 8 Explorer Edition. The device comes with some improvement over the Band 2. It even included an NFC-packing version which is yet to go on sale more than two months after it was announced. Xiaomi did hint recently that the NIFC variant will be available soon. So, Taiwan will be getting just the regular variant without NFC but packing other useful features. The Band 3 is priced at 169 yuan in China ( about NT$750).

The device is available in 4GB + 64Gb combo and 6GB + 128GB variant. We don’t know the price tag it would adopt in Taiwan but it shouldn’t be too different from the 1,699 Yuan (~$252) starting price for the Max 3 in China. Nubia Z18 is close to launch but date is still unknown

The Nubia Z18 has been in the news for over three months and it still hasn’t launched but it appears it may be announced soon.

Judging from Nubia’s CEO’s reply to a post on Weibo last week, we believe the phone is close to launching. Weibo also shows the post was made with the Nubia Z18 (with) “Boundless waterdrop screen”.

Nubia Z18 Weibo

The original post he replied to says the upcoming phone is stunning and will make everyone marvel. After waiting this long for it to launch, we hope we won’t be disappointed.

The Nubia Z18 will come with a notch like that of the Essential PH-1. That design is called waterdrop but is different from that of the OPPO F9 and OPPO F9 Pro.

According to benchmark app Master Lu, the Nubia Z18 will come with a Snapdragon 845 processor, 6GB of RAM, and a 2160 x 1080 display. The TENAA listing reveals that the display is 5.73-inches in size and it will have an 8GB RAM version.

BlackBerry KEY2 LE could get launched on August 30 at IFA in Berlin

TCL Communications has today sent out media invites for a launch event on 30th August at IFA, Berlin. While the company has not revealed what device it plans to announce at the launch event, it is likely to launch BlackBerry KEY2 LE.

Last week, the images of the KEY2 LE smartphone surfaced online, as well as the phone’s specifications have also leaked. It is expected to be available in four color options — Black, Red, Blue, and Copper.

BlackBerry KEY2 LE Launch Date

The BlackBerry KEY2 LE will come with a 4.5-inch Full HD display with 1620 x 1080 pixels screen resolution, 443ppi pixel density, and 3:2 aspect ratio. The display is protected from minor scratches by a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

Under the hood, the device will be powered by Qualcomm‘s Snapdragon 636 octa-core processor clocked at 1.8GHz, coupled with Adreno 509 graphics processor. It’ll pack 4GB RAM and will have two options for onboard storage — 32GB and 64GB. There’ll be a microSD card, allowing users to further expand the phone’s storage capacity up to 2TB.

For photography, the phone features a 13-megapixel rear camera sensor with dual-tone LED flash and a 5-megapixel front-facing snapper. As with the BlackBerry’s usual design, the phone comes with a 4-row Physical QWERTY backlit keyboard with capacitive touch. There’s a fingerprint sensor embedded into the space bar for added security. However, it lacks the trackpad functionality that we saw KeyOne and Key2.

Connectivity options on the device include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 ac (2.4 & 5 GHz), Bluetooth 5 LE, and GPS / GLONASS. The phone will be running Android 8.1 Oreo operating system out-of-the-box and will be fuelled by a 3,500mAh battery.

Meizu 16 teardown reveals copper cooling tube and more

The Meizu 16 was released last week along with a bigger sibling called the Meizu 16 Plus. They are both powered by the Snapdragon 845 processor and also have in-display fingerprint scanners. The smaller one has gotten a teardown, baring all its internals and giving us a hint at what went down during production.

Meizu 16

The Meizu 16 has a glass back but looks like ceramic thanks to the 7-layer vacuum nano-coating. To remove it, you need a heat gun to melt the gum used to attach it to the rest of the phone. Then proceed to use a prying tool to gently separate it from the body.

Meizu 16 teardown

The main PCB is covered with plastic and so is the smaller PCB below the battery. Both can be taken off with the aid of a screwdriver. The smaller PCB is where the USB-C port and the mEngine which provides haptic feedback are housed. The mEngine in the Meizu 16 is a horizontal type linear motor which is said to be much better than the taptic engine in the iPhone X.

Meizu 16 teardown.jpg

The main PCB at the top is where the cameras and the rest of the main components are. The larger sensor at the bottom is the primary camera. Remove the plastic covering the PCB and you can gain access to the PCB which can also be separated from the rest of the phone.

Meizu 16 teardown

The front-facing camera comes off with the PCB. The 20MP sensor is said to be the world’s smallest front-facing camera module and was specially made for Meizu so as to fit into the thin top bezel.

The phone also houses a  copper heat pipe that is connected to a copper plate. Inside the tube is a liquid that and circulates to keep the phone cool when the temperature rises.

Meizu 16 teardown

There is a flap at the bottom part of the phone which can be accessed after removing the main PCB at the top and disconnecting the battery. That flap hides the in-display fingerprint scanner which is angled at 13.7°.

Xiaomi retains leadership of India’s smartphone market in Q2 2018 – IDC

Xiaomi maintained its position as the number one smartphone vendor in India, IDC reports. The report released by IDC India in its Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker showed that smartphone companies shipped a total of 33.5 million units to consumers in India during the second quarter of 2018. This increased shipment represents a robust 20% year-over-year (YoY) growth.

The report also contained the top 5 vendors in the second quarter of the year, with Xiaomi maintaining its lead in the market.  This is the fourth consecutive quarter that Xiaomi is emerging as the overall leader of the Indian smartphone market. The top 5 vendors made up 79% of the smarphone market and Xiaomi had a market share of 29.7% to emerge the overall leader with Samsung coming in at second place with a 23.9% share of the market. Vivo established a good performance to clinch the third spot with a 12.6% market share. The fourth spot is occupied by OPPO wit 7.6% share and Transsion, maker of Infinix, iTel and Techno smartphones completed the top 5 with a 5% share of the market.

Xiaomi’s shipments were mostly from online sales which accounted for more than 56% of its total shipments while 33% went through offline channels. Another point worthy of note is the performance of Huawei’s Honor brand in the online segment. The Honor brand climbed up to the second position with an all-time high of 8% share in the online segment. Huawei is seen as a strong contender that could challenge Xiaomi and Samsung for the top spot. Samsung is also making strong efforts to ensure it climbs back into the number one spot which it had occupied until the third quarter of last year.

Motorola P30 renders, specs spotted on official website before August 15 launch

Lenovo owned Motorola is expected to announce P30, P30 Play and P30 Note smartphones on Aug. 15. The P30 series smartphones were recently found listed on the official website of Motorola China. Today, the P30 smartphone has once again surfaced on the same website with its images and some specs. The listing is no longer accessible, but a couple of tech sites were able to capture renders and specs of the phone before it was taken down.

The Motorola P30 is the first notched smartphone from the company. In fact, the appearance of the P30 is very similar to the Lenovo Z5 phone that was unveiled in June.

The P30 handset features a 6.2inch display that produces an aspect ratio of 19:0. The display is shielded by 2.5D curved glass. The exact name of the processor that powers the smartphone is not mentioned. However, it seems that the handset could be fueled by Snapdragon 636. The SoC is coupled with 6 GB of RAM.

The Motorola P30 has two storage models of 64 GB and 128 GB. It is very likely to arrive with Android Oreo OS. Since it seems to be a device meant for Chinese market, it may feature ZUI skin. The handset is packed with a 3,000mah battery that includes support for 18W fast charging.

For photography, the Motorola P30 is equipped with 16-megapixel + 5-megapixel AI powered dual camera system. The exact configuration of the front camera is not mentioned, but the leak reveals that it can capture selfie shots with bokeh effect through AI. The backside of the phone which seems to be made out of glass features the logo of the company. It is likely that it could be embedded with a fingerprint scanner.

UPDATE: Arm reached out to us to confirm that Kirin 980 is based on Cortex-A76 and also added that Cortex-A77 does not exist.

Original story below:

Huawei will be unleashing the Kirin 980 chipset at the IFA 2018 tech expo that will take place in Berlin, Germany at the end of this month. A recent leak had revealed that Kirin 970’s SoC will be offering a maximum processing speed of 2.8 GHz. Rumors have also revealed that it will be built by TSMC 7nm manufacturing processor. Today, leaked screenshots of a Chinese benchmark tool have surfaced to reveal the entire specifications of the Kirin 980 SoC.

The screenshots show that the Kirin 980 will be an octa-core processor that includes four cores of Cortex-A77 and four cores of Cortex-A55. The clocking speeds of the main cluster is 2.8 GHz, but the processing speeds of the remaining cores are not known yet.

Earlier rumors had claimed that Huawei would be including its own GPU in the Kirin 980. However, it has been now confirmed that the Kirin 980 features Mali-G72 MP24 GPU that comprises twice the cores of 12-core Mali-G72 MP12 found in Kirin 970. As it can be seen above, well-known tipsters Roland Quandt and Ice Universe claim that ARM has never released Cortex-A77 CPU. Hence, the above leak could either be fake or ARM may announce Cortex-A77 at the upcoming IFA 2018. Hence, it is advisable to wait for concrete evidence to surface in the coming weeks to confirm on its specs.

OPPO R17 Geekbench listing reaffirms similarity between SD710 and SD670

A smartphone suspected to be OPPO‘s latest R17 smartphone has been spotted on GeekBench. The device comes with the model number OPPO PBEM00 but is suspected to be the OPPO R17. Just as announced yesterday at the launch event, the GeekBench model has 8GB of RAM. However, the device is listed as having a Snapdragon 710 chipset onboard instead of the Snapdragon 670 announced during the launch.OPPO R17

Tere are two possible explanations for this confusing listing. The first and most likely explanation is the similarity between SDM710 and SDM670. Snapdragon 670 was announced recently with the same configuration as the Snapdragon 710 but with a different clock frequency. Twitter tipster Roland Quandt had alerted that the Geekbench listing shows the similarity between SDM710 and SDM670 chipset since the 670 is identified as 710. However, a look at the Snapdragon 670 Geekbench performance shows a similar score of 1863 points on the single core test and a multi-core score of 5,256 points. The OPPO PBEM00 model was able to garner a 1718 single core test score and 5834 points on the multi-core test. This is also not so different from Snapdragon 710 GeekBench score.

The second likely explanation is that OPPO will launch a second model with the Snapdragon 710 chipset. The Chinese phone maker is also rumoured as having an R17 Pro model in the works. The R17 Pro is rumoured to pack three rear camera sensors with variable aperture. The model is also suspected to pack a Snapdragon 710 chipset onboard but this is just a speculation. The R17 Pro, if it ever will be released, could still utilise a Snapdragon 670 chipset.
