Is Lenovo’s ZUK brand about staging a comeback?

Lenovo‘s ZUK brand emerged out of the blues to be one of its most successful product lines right from the ZUK Z1 to the last model under the brand – ZUK Edge. Unfortunately, the ZUK brand’s reign was shortlived as the Chinese company never updated the line with a new model since 2016 when the ZUK Edge was released. There have been several rumours of the brand’s return but that hasn’t played out to a happy ending all the time. Lenovo has now thrown a teaser which reignited talks of ZUK’s return. The ZUK official Weibo account that has been unused for a couple of months recently posted a 2015 invitation letter to the ZUK Z1 launch.Lenovo ZUK brand return

In addition to the letter, the Weibo post also contains the short text “Such as the world”. We can’t easily decipher what it all stands for but some netizens are guessing the ZUK brand’s return is upon us. That isn’t certain as Lenovo had in the past shared several teasers that got us anticipating the return of the ZUK brand is back but nothing of such happened. Lenovo’s VP even stated categorically that the “ZUK brand is buried”.

However, we must note that the company usually spring up something related to the ZUK brand whenever it seems to want to go on a publicity stunt. The last time the Weibo account was active was during the build-up to the Lenovo Z5 launch in June.  That may just be the case with this new post. Already, the post has generated lots of public interests but the question as to if the ZUK brand will stage a return remains a mystery. We may get a surprise announcement from Lenovo regarding the brand soon.

Huawei Mate 20 Lite official renders reveal black and gold variants, rumored to go on sale in August

The Mate 20 series are the most anticipated devices from Huawei for the second half of the year. Huawei plans to do wonders with the device just as it did with this year’s P-series.

Just like last year’s Mate 10 series, we expect the Mate 20 to come in at least three variants – the Mate 20 Lite, the Mate 20, and the Mate 20 Pro. There should also be a fourth variant made in collaboration with Porsche Design.

The Mate 20 Lite will be the cheapest of the lot and the least powerful. The device already appeared on TENAA where it bared all its specs. Ahead of its official release, which is still unknown by the way, official renders of the phone have surfaced online.

Huawei Mate 20 Lite Gold

The images were posted on the web first by Winfuture.de and they show the Mate 20 Lite in two colors – gold and black. The black variant isn’t new as its pictures are those used by TENAA.

As you can see, the Mate 20 Lite comes with a notch, a common trend in a lot of Huawei and Honor phones released this year. There is also a bit of bezel at the bottom of the display and like last year’s model, there is no fingerprint scanner in front.

The main design changes are on the rear of the Mate 20 Lite. The back appears to be made of glass and appears curved on the sides (gold variant). It packs dual cameras like the Mate 10 Lite but the sensors are separated. Also, the LED flash now flanks the cameras on the left and a fingerprint scanner sits below the setup.

Huawei Mate 20 Lite

Remember the horizontal band that has a lighter shade than the rest of the phone on the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro? Huawei is bringing it to the Mate 20 Lite. This time around it is a vertical line and it runs from the top of the dual cameras down to a few centimeters below the fingerprint sensor.

A picture of the side of the phone shows the power and volume buttons are on the right side and there is an antenna line at the upper half. It also has a 3.5mm audio jack at the bottom.

When it launches it will come with a 6.3-inch 2340 x 1080 display, a Kirin 710 processor, 6GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage.

Its dual rear cameras are a 20MP sensor and a 2MP secondary sensor. It will also have dual front cameras – a 24MP sensor paired with a second 2MP sensor. Under its body sits a 3,650mAh battery. The Mate 20 Lite will run Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box.

Samsung Galaxy J7 Duo gets another price cut in India, now costs Rs. 12,990 ($188)

Samsung Galaxy J7 Duo, which was launched in India earlier this year in April for Rs. 16,990 ($260), has now again received a price cut. Earlier, the phone had received a price cut of Rs. 3,000 and now again it has received a price cut of Rs. 1,000.

With this new price cut, the Galaxy J7 Duo’s effective price in India is Rs. 12,990, which roughly converts to $188. At this price point, the device will compete against the likes of Xiaomi Redmi Note 5, Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1, and Oppo Realme 1 among others.

Samsung Galaxy J7 Duo

The phone is available for purchase through online retailers such as Amazon, Samsung Online Store, Flipkart as well as through offline retailers across the country. However, it is not yet known if the price cut is temporary or permanent.

The Samsung Galaxy J7 Duo features a 5.5-inch HD Super AMOLED display with screen resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. Under the hood, the device is powered by the company’s own octa-core Exynos 7 Series processor, clocked at 1.6GHz, coupled with 4GB RAM and 32GB onboard storage. It also features a microSD card slot, allowing users to expand the phone’s storage capacity.

On the back side, there’s a 13-megapixel primary sensor and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor with f/1.9 aperture and an LED flash. On the front side, it comes equipped with an 8-megapixel sensor with a f/1.9 aperture and an LED flash. The front-facing shooter comes with Selfie Focus and Beauty Mode. These six Sony phones will receive Android Pie starting September

Sony tries to release major OS updates for its devices (read flagships) fairly quickly. Now that Android 9.0 Pie is official, the manufacturer has released the list of phones that will get the update and when they will begin to receive it.

Android 9.0 Pie

So far, Sony will update six of its phones to Android 9.0 Pie. These phones are its flagships from this year and last year. They are the Xperia XZ1 Compact, the Xperia XZ1, Xperia XZ Premium, Xperia XZ2, Xperia XZ2 Compact, and Xperia XZ2 Premium.

Sony has also revealed that the update will begin rolling out as from September and will be done by November which is pretty fair. There is no info on when the update will be made available for its mid-range phones.

Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium gets updated: new camera features and August security patch

The Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium is a really hard device to like. The flagship doesn’t offer much that a $500 phone can’t provide and Sony is charging a whopping $900 for it. A new update has started to roll out to the phone but we doubt that it will do much to steer buyers towards it.

Sony-Xperia-XZ2-Premium-Chrome-Silver

The interesting features the update brings are new camera modes. First is a bokeh mode that surprisingly didn’t come with it right out of the box seeing as this is Sony’s first phone with dual rear cameras. With the new bokeh mode, users will be able to take pictures with the background blurred while the main subject is in focus.

Another new camera feature is the Monochrome mode. This allows users to take photos and record videos in black and white. This is a feature available on the Essential PH-1 as well.

To access this new features on your Xperia XZ2 Premium, just tap the function key below the shutter button in the camera app.

The update also comes with August’s security patch but the Android version number is still Android 8.0.0. The update started rolling out a few days ago and those who have received it say the camera performance is amazing but still $999 is a lot to shell out.

The Xperia XZ2 packs a 5.8-inch 4K display, a Snapdragon 845 processor, 6GB of RAM, and 64GB of expandable storage. Its dual cameras are a 19MP f/1.8 1/2.3” sensor and a 12MP monochrome f/1.6 1/2.3” sensor. It also has a 13MP f/2.0 sensor above the display.

HTC announces list of phones which will receive Android 9.0 Pie update

Last week, Google officially released the latest version of its mobile operating system — Android 9.0 Pie. Now comes the part when smartphone manufacturers announce the list of their phones that will receive the latest Android update.

While Google and Essential have already rolled out Android Pie updates for their smartphones, HTC has now announced the list of its phones which will get the Android 9.0 Pie update.

HTC Android 9.0 Pie update phones

The company has revealed that HTC U12+, U11+, U11, and U11 life (Android One) will receive the latest update. While the company has not revealed the timeline for the update, it has said that the timeline will be announced in due course.

The list of devices from HTC does not include HTC Desire 12, which was launched around five months ago. The U Ultra and U Play are also missing from the list, which are less than two years old.

Apart from HTC, Vivo has already announced that its smartphones will receive the Android Pie update in the fourth quarter of this year, and the Vivo X21 is likely to be the first phone to get the update. Xiaomi has also announced that the Android 9-based MIUI 10 beta update will soon be available for testing for the users of Mi MIX 2S.

Lenovo is preparing its most powerful Yoga 2-in-1 for IFA 2018

IFA 2018 is going to be the most interesting hi-tech-related trade show of this second half of the year, and Lenovo will take part in the show with several new devices. Among these, according to the known leakster Roland Quandt from WinFuture.de, there will also be Yoga C930, the most powerful convertible from the Yoga line-up. The new model follows the Yoga 920 unveiled at IFA 2017 with a consistently improved specs sheet. According to the leaked specs, the new 2 in 1 will be very lightweight as it will weigh just 1.38 kg. But it will sport a wide 13.9-inch display with the support to the touchscreen and a highly detailed 4K resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels.

Thanks to a solid and sophisticated hinge, it will be possible to convert the Lenovo Yoga C920 from a notebook to a tablet by overturning the display and putting it behind the physical backlit keyboard. The display will also support the Lenovo Active Pen for handwriting and drawing with thousands of pressure levels. Under the hood, there will be Intel 8th gen processor: in detail, there should be a configuration with Intel Core i5 8250U (clock frequency of 1.6 GHz and up to 3.4 GHz with TurboBoost) and another more expensive one with Intel Core i7 8550U (running at 1.8 GHz and up to 4 GHz with TurboBoost) for top-class performance.

Alongside these CPUs, there will be 8 or 16 GB of RAM and an SSD with a capacity of 256 or 512 GB depending on the chosen configuration. The notebook is expected to be equipped with a USB-A port, a USB 3.1 port, two USB-C port with Thunderbolt 3, a 3.5 mm audio jack and dual band Wi-Fi connectivity. Lenovo Yoga C920 should also have an improved battery over its predecessor, with a capacity of 70 Wh. Given that it is a top-end device, it will be costly: it is expected to hit the shelves with a starting price tag of €1600 in Europe.

Meizu brings Flyme 7.0.1.0G stable version on 3 smartphones

Many users were left disappointed after Meizu announced that several devices which were expected to receive the update to Flyme 7 will not get it anymore. But the company is keeping support for other eligible devices on a regular basis. Now, the Chinese company has just started to roll out a new stable version of its latest user interface on three smartphones. The new update coming via OTA brings the number of version of Flyme OS to 7.0.1.0G and it has been rolled out on Meizu M6, M6 Note and Pro 6 Plus. Although we are talking about an update to Flyme 7 released in August 2018, the firmware is still based on Android Nougat. Even the new security patches are not the most recent ones as they have been released in June 2018 (with the August patches already released).

Flyme 7 OS

According to the changelog of the new firmware released by Meizu, this new version of Flyme 7 brings important software optimizations which result in an increase in smoothness and performance. The new update recalibrates the memory in order to avoid lags or freezes. There are also improvements to the graphics with new icons, and a new artificial intelligence software called OneMind 2.0.

Honor Play getting a mysterious but big update on August 13

Together with the Honor Note 10Honor Play is the latest Honor flagship launched by Huawei and it is a smartphone which focuses on gaming and high performance. After launching the Huawei Nova 3, the company has just confirmed through a post on Weibo that it will be launching a huge update for this phone on August 13. The post comes with a teaser image attached, but it does not reveal which kind of update the company is talking about. It is not possible to understand whether it will be a hardware or a software update. In the first case, we may see the launch of a new variant of the Honor Play with a different memory configuration.

Honor Play Special Edition

According to the most reliable hypothesis, Huawei may launch the flagship in a version with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage, which would be the most expensive one as the ones available now boast 4 or 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. It makes sense as the flagship only exists with 64 GB of internal storage. If it is a software update, it may be related to the new CPU Turbo technology announced with the Honor Note 10. In case you do not know, this device is the first to come with the GPU Turbo technology, allowing an increase in performance by up to 60 percent with up to 30% reduction in energy consumption.

But recently Huawei announced the CPU Turbo technology and this has still not been rolled out on the Honor Play. The handset is currently available in China with a price tag of 1999 Yuan, which roughly translates into $292 at the actual change. It features a notched display with a size of 6.3 inches and a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels, as well as a powerful octa-core Kirin 970 chipset running at a max frequency of 2.4 GHz (same SoC as the Huawei P20 Pro).

Leaked Google Pixel 3 XL video showcases huge 6.7-inch display and 3,430mAh battery

Google Pixel 3 XL was recently the subject of a leaked unboxing video which appeared online recently. The device has again appeared in a video preview which not only shows the design but also the Android Pie interface. The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are expected to be the first smartphones that would run Android 9.0 Pie out of the box. Interestingly, the video preview comes courtesy of the same Telegram channel of a Russian tech blogger as the first leaked unboxing video. The video has, however, been uploaded to YouTube and you can find it below.

The video showcases a white coloured model and of course, we can clearly make out the notch design which has somewhat become a trend, an unpopular one at that. The video also shows some of the specs of the Pixel 3 XL, among which is a resolution of 1440 x 2960 pixels and 494ppi. This suggests a display in the region of around 6.7 inches based on calculations. At the rear, there is a single 12MP sensor while selfies are taken care of by an 8MP shooter. Google Pixel 3 XL

Further, the Pixel 3 XL is listed with a Snapdragon 845 chipset as well as 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. The device will get its juice from a 3,430mAH battery which is quite small but the device would be optimised for power efficiency. The video also showed a demonstration of the Always-on display feature which was unveiled with Android Pie. The tipster did indicate that the Pixel 3 XL model is a pre-launch version, so don’t be surprised if some of the hardware and features are different when the Pixel 3 XL is finally launched.

BlackBerry KEY2 LE Specs leaked, packs less punch but still great

TCL is set to launch a new version of its BlackBerry KEY2 smartphone. The new version will cost less and launch as the BlackBerry KEY2 LE according to Roland Quandt. Now specs of the upcoming device have leaked online.

According to AndroidPolice, the BlackBerry KEY 2 LE will come with a Snapdragon 636 processor paired with 4GB of RAM. It will also come in 32GB ROM and 64GB ROM storage variants.

The processor is quite different from the Geekbench listing of the device which says it has a Snapdragon 660 processor. We’ll advise you keep your fingers crossed on this one.

BlackBerry KEY2 LE

As seen from leaked photos, the KEY 2 LE will have dual rear cameras but they will be less powerful. Instead of two 12MP sensors, they will be 13MP and 5MP sensors.

Even though the design of both the KEY 2 and KEY 2 LE appears the same, the latter is slightly smaller measuring 150.25 x 71.8 x 8.35 mm. It also weighs less at 156g. TCL has also cut the battery from 3500mAh to 3000mAh which is a pretty significant decrease. The phone will retain the display size and resolution of its more powerful sibling which is a 4.5-inch 1080 x 1620 screen.

AndroidPolice have also gotten their hands on a picture that shows both sides of the device. The QWERTY keyboard looks similar and it is said to house a fingerprint scanner under the spacebar key. However, it won’t have the trackpad functionality of the KEYone and KEY2 which is a bummer.

Xiaomi’s crowdfunded Himo V1 Electric Bike now on sale for 1799 yuan (~$263)

Xiaomi announced a new crowdfunded electric-assisted bike around June this year with an amazing 1699 yuan ($248) price tag. Since then, the bike dubbed Himo V1 hasn’t been available to buy on the Youpin platform where all Xiaomi crowdfunded products are listed. However, all that has changed now as the Himo V1 electric bike is presently on sale at Xiaomi Youpin for 1799 yuan ($263). This is a 100 yuan higher than the crowdfunding price tag but it is still a decent and affordable price tag for an electric bike.Himo electric bicycle

The Himo V1, just like all Xiaomi products, comes with a solid build and an attractive design. Its battery modules, electronic control systems, and chargers are all integrated into the design. The electric bike has a lightweight and compact structure with a reclinable handlebar. The handlebar is equipped with a multi-functional instrument panel having an LCD display. The panel also has three buttons, one is the power button, another is the button to switch modes easily. The LCD display shows various vital parameters like the battery power, the distance travelled and others. The panel comes with an IP54 waterproof build which makes it suitable for use when it is raining.

Further, the bicycle frame is made of aluminium alloy and in all, it weighs 16.7kg which is light enough for ladies to lift up easily. The battery and internal wiring is integrated with the frame and is covered with a plastic casing. The handlebar is also collapsible for easy transport. The Himo Electric Bicycle comes with an LED headlamp with enhanced brightness. The taillight is designed to have a large area for visibility of the bike to other road users. The device also features high-performance brake discs with the brakes connected to the taillight. The Himo electric bike gets its juice from a 250W brushless DC motor in the power-assisted mode. The DC motor is integrated into the 12-inch hub on the rear wheel. This brings ease to the pedalling by providing less resistance, greater torque and rapid dynamic response. There is also a 6AH/36V battery with a charging time of about 6.5 hours. A fully charged battery can last a riding distance of about 50 kilometres.Himo V1
