The Meizu 16 and Meizu 16 Plus that were unveiled on Aug. 8 came with in-display fingerprint scanner enabled 18:9 aspect ratio S-AMOLED screens. Samsung Galaxy Watch official: two sizes,Tizen OS, IP68, 5ATM, GPS, multiple straps and more

Alongside the Galaxy Note 9, Samsung also launched a new line of smart wearables which it called Galaxy Watch. We can’t say if Samsung has finally killed the Gear series but the new smartwatch looks like a successor to the Gear S3 without bearing the name Gear S4. It features a circular bezel just like on the Gear S3, which can be rotated in order to navigate through the Tizen interface. Yes, Samsung still sticks with the Tizen operating system for the new smartwatch. This effectively put to rest rumours of the Galaxy Watch running on Android Wear.Samsung Galaxy Watch

Talking of the design, apart from the circular rotatable bezel, the Samsung Galaxy Watch is available in two sizes. There is a 46mm version which is the same size as the Gear S3 and a smaller 42mm option as well. The 46mm model comes with a 1.3-inch display size and there is a 1.2-inch display on the 42mm version. Both screens are equipped with Gorilla Glass DX+. Not only that, the 46mm version is equipped with a 472mAh battery while the smaller 42mm Galaxy Watch variant packs a smaller 270mAh battery. You don’t need to worry about the smaller battery as Samsung still claims both models are built to last for several days.Samsung Galaxy Watch

Apart from packing a smaller battery and screen size, the two versions are available in both Bluetooth and LTE models. Both models are equipped with GPS for accurate tracking. They are both also equipped with 4GB of inbuilt storage but their RAM sizes differ. You get 1.5GB of RAM on the LTE models while the Bluetooth versions come with just 768MB RAM.

All models will come in three casing colours for buyers to choose from – Midnight Black, Rose Gold and Silver. There will be a large variety of bands to choose from. The Samsung Galaxy Watch also comes with an IP68 water resistance with an additional 5ATM pressure rating. Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Launched packing a Bluetooth-enabled S pen and big battery

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is before us! As expected, the flagship phablet was unveiled during the Galaxy Unpacked event held in New York earlier today. The Note 9 was the main attraction of the event which also saw the launch of a new Galaxy home speaker and Galaxy Watch.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Design, Specs & Features

The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 bears a strong resemblance with last year’s Note 8 but it comes with a number of useful improvements that makes it worth buying. The rear design of the Note 9 is markedly different from the Note 8. It packs a horizontally aligned dual sensor with a dual-tone LED flash. This time around, the rear fingerprint sensor is placed under the dual cameras. Unfortunately, the device doesn’t feature an on-screen fingerprint sensor but the rear-mounted one is highly sensitive.

One of the upgrades is the bigger 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display with an 18:9 aspect ratio which is slightly bigger than the Note 8’s. The display shares the same 1440 x 2960 pixels resolution with the Note 8. The display is HD10 compliant and comes with support for Always On Display. This is further complemented with a massive 4,000mAh battery which is 20% bigger than the Note 8’s battery. The battery also supports fast charging.

The device is equally equipped with an Exynos 9810 chipset just like the Galaxy S9 and S9+. We also expect Samsung to release a Snapdragon 845-powered variant in some markets. The processor teams up with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage on the base model. The top end model comes with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage. Both storages can be expanded via the microSD card slot.

On the camera end, the Galaxy Note 9 sports a 12MP dual-aperture f/1.5-2.4 wide and 12MP f/2.4 telephoto cameras. Both sensors have Optical image stabilization (OIS) as well as Samsung’s new Intelligent Camera which enables the phone to detect scenes, optimize colors and contrast as well as detect flaws such as a smudgy lens or subject that has closed his eyes. The front camera is still an 8MP f/1.7 selfie snapper. Other features of the new Note 9 includes an IP68 water-resistant body and stereo speakers.Samsung Galaxy Note 9

In addition, the Note 9 packs an improved S Pen which is the first Bluetooth-enabled digital pen. The S Pen can also be used as a remote shutter for the camera with a range of 10 meters and a battery power of about 30 minutes. The battery can also withstand up to 200 clicks and the S Pen now has support for three inputs; short press, long press and double press. It can be recharged in just 40 seconds by simply placing it in its holster cramp on the side of the phone.

Another upgrade on the Galaxy Note 9 is the DeX mode which has been updated. Users will no longer require a DeX Dock and a physical keyboard and mouse to utilise the mode. The Note9 can enter DeX mode through a single USB-C to HDMI cable and while in DeX mode, the phone is fully functional as a keyboard and trackpad.

Pricing and Availability

The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 will be available in four different colour variants; Ocean Blue, Midnight Black, Lavender Purple and a new Metallic Copper. As for the price, the 6GB+128GB Galaxy Note 9 variant costs $999 while the 8GB+512GB model will sell for $1,250. The device has gone on pre-order in the U.S, U.K and Germany. The sales will commence on August 24.Samsung Galaxy Note 9Samsung Galaxy Note 9

A statement credited to Wang Xianju, general manager of TCL’s white goods department hinted that the company will continue to push forward with its Double Plus strategy. Double Plus strategy represents intelligence plus internet and products plus services, with a focus on technological innovation and users’ involvement.

TCL’s home appliances form the bedrock of the company. This year, over 1 million washing machines were sold in the first half of the year, according to the company’s official data. What’s new in Android 9 Pie on the Essential Phone?

Android 9 Pie was officially announced on Monday, 6th of August, two weeks earlier than the August 20 date it was expected to launch. The new version of Android started rolling out to Pixel devices immediately after the announcement, and in what can be termed a pleasant surprise, to the Essential Phone too.

Essential Phone Android Pie

I own the Essential Phone and have already updated my device to Android 9.0 Pie. So I’m going to share the new features the update brings to the phone.

First, if you own an Essential Phone and haven’t received the update, you should head to the settings menu and manually check for the update. I didn’t get a notification for the update myself but the update was available immediately I checked.

The update is about 1GB and you may want to switch to a Wi-Fi network if you are on cellular data. Once the update is done, you should restart your phone for the changes to take effect. Just before we dive into the new features, do note that the update comes bundled with August’s security patch even though it still shows as July. Essential has provided an explanation for that. It turns out they failed to update the patch string.

New Navigation and Recent Apps Menu

The biggest change you will notice after restarting your device is the new navigation mode. Gone are the back, home, and recent apps buttons and in their place is a new pill-shaped button and a small “back” arrow. Thankfully, Google has provided the option for users to switch to the previous navigation system. However, the icons are now like the ones on the Pixels.

If you want to go check your recent apps or switch between apps, all you have to do is swipe the pill icon upwards. Doing that brings you to the second visual change.

Android P screenshot (1)

In Android Pie, Google has switched from vertical arrangement to a horizontal layout. You can scroll between open apps by dragging the pill button but I find scrolling through the apps itself faster and better. Apps can be closed by swiping them upwards.

Getting into split-screen mode has changed too since there is no more recent apps button. Entering into split-screen mode now is still pretty simple as well.

Android P screenshot (3)

Can you see the icons above each app when you open the recent apps menu? Tap on it and a menu will show up. The menu includes app info, split screen, and pin. Apps that don’t support split screen won’t have the option listed. Select the split screen option and the selected app goes to the top half of the screen. You can select the second app from the rest of the open apps.

To quickly switch between apps, just drag the pill button to the far right and it’ll take you to the previous app.

Adaptive Battery and Adaptive Brightness

Adaptive Battery and Adaptive Brightness

These are two of the main features that come with Android Pie. Adaptive battery uses AI to improve your battery life. What it does is study your usage pattern and limits the resources allocated to infrequently used apps. This is supposed to improve battery life.

Adaptive Brightness also uses AI to automatically adjust brightness. The phone studies your environment and usage pattern to adjust display brightness. The system also studies the manual adjustments you make to the brightness slider.

Quick Settings Menu Android Pie

Notification Shade and Quick Settings Menu

The Quick Settings menu wears a new look now. On Android 9.0 Pie, the quick settings icons now sit in a circle. When a setting is activated, the icon takes on a green color or teal if the device theme is set to dark.

One complaint about the redesigned quick settings menu is that you have to completely drag it down to access the gear icon that takes you straight to the phone’s settings.

There is also an edit button along with the notification when you take a screenshot. So you can jump right into editing the screenshot.

Android Pie New Settings

Settings

The main phone settings looks better as Android 9.0 Pie brings much-needed colors to the icons. Also, the icons are now in a circle like those of the quick settings menu.

Android Pie Volume Control

Volume Controls and Bluetooth Audio Controls

Volume control has also been redesigned. The control slider is no longer at the top of the screen but now on the right where the volume buttons are. We don’t know if the position will be standard irrespective of where your volume buttons are since there are some phones with their volume buttons on the left.

There is a gear icon below the slider that takes you to sound settings where you can adjust volume for calls, alarms, media etc.

There is also an icon above the slider that you can tap to mute all sounds or put the phone in a vibration-only mode.

A neat feature Android 9.0 Pie brings is the ability to remember the volume level of each individual Bluetooth audio device. So you can set your speaker to the maximum level and your earbuds to 50% and the phone will remember the volume level for each individual device.

Android Pie screenshot button

Dedicated Screenshot button

Android Pie brings a dedicated screenshot button to pure Android. Rather than the usual volume down + power button combo to take a screenshot, you can hold down the power button for a few seconds and select the screenshot button that has been added to the power menu.

Android Pie Easter Egg

Easter Egg

The Android Pie Easter egg is fun and colorful and changes everytime you check it. To access it, go to Settings > System > About Phone > Android Version. Tap the Android Version (9) multiple times and it will open the easter egg. Be careful, this easter egg has the ability to hypnotize you.

What is missing?

Some features are missing in the update. Some are available on the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL and others are scheduled for release later.

  • Overview Selection – this allows you to copy text from one app to another while in the recent apps menu without you having to enter into any of the apps. It also allows you to share images too.
  • App Actions – App actions use machine learning and AI to predict the apps you need and at certain times of the day using the Pixel launcher. For example, you can have recommendations for playing a song when you connect your earphones
  • Slices – this brings features in an app to the surface (read search). So if you search for Uber or Lyft in search, part of the search results you get is the distance and duration to your home or if a driver is close by. This is already available on the Pixel and will be available for other phones by fall.
  • Digital Wellbeing – this is supposed to help you use your phone less than you currently do by allowing you set timers for app usage or switching to grayscale when it is near a preset bedtime. There is also a chart that shows you the duration spent per app and the number of times you unlocked your phone. Digital Wellbeing is available as a beta for Pixel devices running Android Pie. A stable version will launch this fall to Pixel, Android One, and other phones.

WhatsApp vulnerabilities that can help scammers spread fake news discovered

Researchers at the research firm, Check Point have discovered a vulnerability in the popular messaging app WhatsApp could be exploited or manipulated by attackers to steer potential evidence in their favor and even spread misinformation. The vulnerability allows the attacker to intercept and manipulate messages sent by those in a group or private conversation.Whatsapp

The research firm demonstrated three possible ways the vulnerability can be exploited and one of them is by changing a reply from someone to put words into their mouth that they did not say. Another way is by quoting a message in a reply to a group conversation to make it appear as if it came from a person who is not even part of the group. Thirdly, by sending a message to a member of a group that pretends to be a group message but is in fact only sent to this member. However, the member’s response will be sent to the entire group.

The firm gave some visual illustration of how the attacks could play out in real life. With an active user base of about 1.5 billion as at early 2018, WhatsApp is a steady target of hackers who see the app as a verile ground to launch potential scams. If an hacker can manipulate the message of an influencial individual, such message could go viral if twisted in an attractive or surprising way. The app has been used in the past to send fake rumours and misinformations that have led to the killing of innocent persons, like the spate of lynching and murders of innocent victims witness in India. It was also used in spreading rumours about the dangers of receiving a yellow fever vaccine in Brazil in 2016, leading to  an epidemic that infected 1500 people and killed almost 500.

Since the app is used for sensitive conversations ranging from confidential corporate and government information, to criminal intelligence that could be used in a court of law, it is important that the vulnerability be taken care of. WhatsApp is yet to issue any statement about the issue but users can prevent being used as tools for spreading misinformation by verifying news before sharing. It is recommended to cross check what you see on social media with a quick online search to see what others may be saying about the same story. Or even better, do not rely on social media websites at all for most of your news.

Xiaomi Pocophone F1 launching soon as POCO brand goes official in India

Recent reports have revealed plenty of information on the specifications and appearance of an upcoming Xiaomi phone called Pocophone F1. Today, Xiaomi’s Mi India Twitter account has officially confirmed the arrival of POCO brand in India. It seems that the Pocophone F1 will be the first smartphone in the new lineup for the coutnry.

Now that the POCO series has been introduced in India, the company may release more phones under the new brand in future. Xiaomi is yet to release an official statement on why it has decided to debut the POCO series in India.

Xiaomi’s Redmi series have gained immense popularity in India. The overwhelming response of Redmi phones have allowed it to dethrone Samsung to become the number one smartphone brand in Q4 2017 and Q1 2018. However, its premium smartphones have always received lukewarm reception from the Indian audience.

After the Xiaomi Mi 5 failed to attract Indian customers in 2016, the company had skipped the Indian launch for Xiaomi Mi 6 in 2017.  The Chinese manufacturer had launched Mi MIX 2S in China earlier this year. Soon after its launch, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun had said that “I think the Mi MIX 2 might not be the best fit for some of the target audiences in India. It uses four-sided curved ceramic body, and 18K gold coating. A lot of these things might not necessarily be suitable for the Indian market. Actually, it’s a piece of art. The Indian market will still take some time to accept this product”. Hence, it seems that since Mi MIX 2 was another failure from the company in the Indian market and the company has no plans to launch Mi MIX 2S in India.

These models were launched with a price tag of 2,699 Yuan (~$395), 2,999 Yuan (~$439) and 3,499 Yuan (~$512). However, these models are now selling with discounted price tags such as 1,999 Yuan (~$292), 2,499 Yuan (~$366) and 2,799 Yuan (~$409).

The sale of the new 8 GB RAM variant of Honor V10 will begin at 10:08 AM on Aug. 14. However, the company is yet to reveal the pricing of this model. As it can be seen below, the company has already listed the 8 GB + 128 GB on Vmall, but its pricing is not mentioned.

Honor is currently selling two smartphones with 8 GB of RAM namely, Honor 10 GT and Honor Note 10. Both the phones are respectively priced at 3,299 Yuan (~$483) and 3,599 Yuan (~$527).
