Samsung discontinues DeX app for Windows in One UI 7

Samsung is keeping One UI 7, its next Android-based skin, mostly under wraps. While leaks hint at new icons and interface tweaks, an update on Samsung’s UK website reveals a more significant change: the DeX app for Windows is being discontinued.

For the uninitiated, DeX allows Galaxy phone owners to project their device’s screen onto a PC window. The functionality, aptly named “Desktop eXperience,” facilitates seamless file transfer between the two devices. It’s a handy tool, especially for those who want a more desktop-like experience from their phone.

However, a footnote on Samsung’s DeX page hints at the feature’s future:

The DeX for PC on Windows OS will end support from the One UI 7 version. We encourage customers to connect mobile phones and PC through the Link to Windows feature.

It’s not surprising

While the news isn’t exactly surprising, it’s a shift for DeX users on Windows. Samsung suggests migrating to the built-in “Link to Windows” feature, which offers similar functionality. It’s a logical move considering Link to Windows is native to the Windows ecosystem and works with more than just Samsung devices.

It’s worth noting that only the Windows app is being discontinued. DeX itself remains available to connect directly to a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, allowing users to enjoy a desktop-like setup. However, for those accustomed to the Windows app, this change may disrupt familiar workflows.

The end of the DeX Windows app isn’t the only change coming with One UI 7. Samsung also plans to drop support for downloading third-party edge panels, further streamlining the user interface. While much about One UI 7 remains undisclosed, leaks hint at notable changes in design and features.

Whether One UI 7’s new features outweigh the loss of tools like the DeX Windows app and third-party edge panels remains to be seen. However, Galaxy users should prepare for these shifts as the update approaches.

Realme GT 8 Pro Could Boast a Massive 8,000mAh Battery: Report

In November, Realme released the GT 7 Pro in its domestic Chinese market powered by a massive 6,500mAh battery, while keeping the thickness of the device down to 8.55mm. This is made possible by the newly adopted silicon-carbon anode battery technology, which uses silicon and carbon to create a high-energy-density, long-lasting battery.

(Machine translated Chinese to English)

It appears that the brand is still not satisfied with this achievement and is experimenting to push the boundaries even further on its next flagship. Tipster Digital Chat Station has reported that Realme is considering three battery options for its next-gen flagship, presumably the GT 8 Pro, each offering impressive capacity but with trade-offs in charging speed.

Realme GT 7 Pro

The most ambitious option is an 8,000mAh battery, which would provide exceptional endurance but require slower 80W charging. This would lead to longer charging times, potentially up to 70 minutes.

A more moderate option is a 7,500mAh battery with 100W charging. This configuration would offer a balance between capacity and charging speed, with charging times estimated to be around 55 minutes.

Finally, a 7,000mAh battery with 120W charging is also being considered. This option would provide significant battery life while maintaining relatively fast charging speeds, with charging times estimated to be around 42 minutes.

While these details are based on leaks and subject to change, if accurate, the GT 8 Pro could stand out in terms of battery performance. With advancements like the energy-efficient Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, next year’s flagship smartphones might offer multi-day battery life. More concrete details, however, are yet to be revealed.

For those unaware, the Redmi A4 5G debuted with a tall 6.88-inch LCD display offering an impressive 120Hz refresh rate. The panel provides an HD+ resolution with a 20:9 aspect ratio, and up to 600 nits of peak brightness.

Under the hood, the device houses a Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 processor, paired with 4GB of RAM and either 64GB or 128GB of internal storage. There is an option to expand the storage up to 1TB using a microSD card.

The device draws power from a large 5160mAh battery, paired with 18W wired fast charging. For optics, it has a 50 MP primary camera on the back, alongside an auxiliary camera. Apple AirPods alternative: The best earbuds for 2024

Apple’s AirPods are practically synonymous with wireless earbuds. Their sleek design, seamless integration with Apple devices, and user-friendly experience make them a top choice for many.

However, they’re far from the only option in the wireless earbud market. If you use Android, prioritize budget-friendly options, or want features outside Apple’s ecosystem, plenty of compelling AirPods alternatives are available. So let’s take a look at them today.

1. Sony WF-1000XM5

Sony-WF-1000XM5

Sony’s flagship earbuds often top “best of” lists, and the WF-1000XM5 is no exception. They have industry-leading noise-canceling (ANC) that effectively drowns out the world, making them perfect for commutes or focusing on a noisy airplane.

The sound quality leans towards the warm side, with rich bass and clear highs, making them ideal for most genres. They might not be the most compact buds on the market, but the comfortable fit and intuitive controls make up for it. However, be prepared to shell out a bit more compared to AirPods Pro.

2. Samsung Galaxy Buds 3 Pro

Galaxy Buds 3 Pro
Samsung Galaxy Buds 3 Pro

Samsung competes closely with Apple in many areas, including earbuds. The latest Galaxy Buds 3 Pro directly challenges Apple’s AirPods in specs, features, sound quality, and price.

The Galaxy Buds 3 Pro has been praised by reviewers as the best-sounding earbuds Samsung has ever made. They deliver strong bass and treble, along with clear mids.

Samsung has also redesigned the earbuds with a stem-style shape for a more secure and comfortable fit. The earbuds also integrate seamlessly with Samsung devices. Galaxy phone users will appreciate features like auto-switching between a phone and a watch, while the companion app simplifies control customization and sound profile adjustments.

3. Nothing Ear

Nothing Ear buds

Standing out with their transparent design and stylish rectangular case, Nothing Ear earbuds offer a unique look at a budget-friendly price. They boast a lighter design than AirPods Pro 2 and come with robust dust and water resistance.

The 2024 update boasts improved audio performance and 1.8x better noise cancellation thanks to a new ceramic diaphragm. Battery life goes up too, lasting 5.2 hours with ANC and 8.5 hours without.

These earbuds offer multipoint pairing, a low-lag gaming mode, and customizable sound – features missing in AirPods. They also support third-party conveniences like Google Fast Pair and Microsoft Swift Pair.

4. Anker Soundcore Liberty 4 NC

If raw affordability is your top priority, Anker’s Soundcore Liberty 4 NC is a compelling choice. Don’t expect perfect sound tuning or top-notch ANC, but they deliver surprisingly decent audio at the price.

Battery life is impressive too, and the compact case makes them a good option for everyday use. They’re not going to win any awards for innovation, but for budget-conscious users who prioritize practicality, the Liberty 4 NC offers a no-frills, functional option.

5. Beats Fit Pro

Owned by Apple, Beats offers compelling options for fitness-focused iPhone users. Their sporty Beats Fit Pro features Apple’s H1 chip for smooth pairing with Apple devices. However, unlike AirPods, they offer an Android app for convenient use.

The Fit Pro ditches the AirPods’ iconic design for a more versatile look. Their secure ear hooks ensure stability during intense workouts without sacrificing comfort. They come in various colors with IPX4 water resistance.

Apple users will appreciate convenient features like one-touch pairing, Find My support, and Siri access. Android users get one-touch pairing, in-app battery monitoring, and customizable controls.

These earbuds offer solid noise-canceling, a natural-sounding transparency mode, and Apple’s spatial audio for enhanced immersion. Battery life is impressive as it delivers up to six hours with ANC and 18 hours extra in the case.

6. Verdict

The decision ultimately comes down to your priorities. AirPods remain a solid choice for those deeply entrenched in the Apple ecosystem and who value seamless integration. However, for audiophiles, budget-conscious buyers, fitness buffs, or those seeking specific features like class-leading ANC or call quality, there are a plethora of compelling alternatives just waiting to be explored.

With a little research, you can find a pair of wireless earbuds that perfectly suit your needs and lifestyle, all without breaking the bank or breaking free from the Apple ecosystem (if you choose not to).

iQOO could soon launch Neo 10R in India

After launching the iQOO 13 in China in November, iQOO is preparing for its Indian debut on December 3rd. Shortly after, the company might introduce another device. Reliable tipster Abhishek Yadav claims that the company is preparing to launch iQOO Neo 10R in the country.

If true, this would be the first for iQOO in India, as the company has never released a phone with the “R” suffix before. According to Yadav, the Neo 10R will offer three storage configurations: 8GB RAM with 128GB or 256GB storage and 12GB RAM with 256GB storage.

Details about the rest of the hardware remain under wraps, but iQOO’s past strategies might provide some clues. For instance, the iQOO Neo 9 Pro in India was a rebranded version of the Chinese Neo 9. If iQOO follows a similar approach, the Neo 10R might simply be a repackaged Neo 10 tailored for the Indian market.

What does the Neo 10 series offer?

Meanwhile, iQOO has already launched the Neo 10 series in China. The Neo 10 series boasts a familiar flat design reminiscent of last year’s Neo 9 series, but with slimmer bezels measuring a mere 1.4mm. While the frame remains plastic, the camera island gets a design refresh, and a vegan leather version adds a touch of novelty.

Both Neo 10 and Neo 10 Pro sport a large 6.78-inch 1.5K+ 144Hz 8T LTPO display. Its peak brightness goes up to a staggering 1800 nits globally and 4500 nits locally, a significant improvement over the Neo 9’s 1400 nits peak brightness.

iQOO-Neo10-Pro

Under the hood, the Neo 10 features the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, while the Neo 10 Pro runs on the Dimensity 9400 chipset. Both models include the Q2 gaming chip inherited from the upcoming iQOO 13 and a 6400mm² VC cooling system for sustained performance during intense gaming sessions.

Camera-wise, both Neo 10 and Neo 10 Pro rely on the Sony IMX921 main sensor, while the Pro model ups the ante with a 50MP ultrawide camera compared to the standard version’s 8MP offering.

Both phones come with a substantial 6100mAh battery and support 120W fast charging with support for the 100W PPS protocol that promises a 50% charge in just 15 minutes.

Both phones run on Android 15, but the user experience differs due to their custom interfaces. The Oppo Find X8 Pro uses ColorOS 15, while the global Vivo X200 opts for FunTouch OS 15.

Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference when choosing between the two. Both skins offer plenty of customization options and have seen improvements in smoothness and animation compared to their predecessors.

3. Camera

The camera systems are where things get interesting. Oppo utilizes a quad-camera setup with four 50MP lenses, while Vivo opts for a triple-camera setup with a high-resolution 200MP telephoto lens.

Vivo’s telephoto delivers exceptional zoom shots, perfect for capturing distant details. Oppo counters with Hasselblad Color Calibration for accurate color reproduction, appealing to photography enthusiasts.

For selfies, both phones offer a capable 32MP camera with 4K video recording.  However, Vivo’s ultrawide selfie lens provides an edge for capturing group photos or wider scenes.

For videographers, the Vivo X200 Pro reigns supreme with 8K recording capabilities. While both offer Dolby Vision HDR and 10-bit video, 8K opens up new creative possibilities.

4. Battery

Vivo offers a slight edge in battery life with its 6000 mAh battery compared to Oppo’s 5910 mAh. This might translate to an extra hour or two of usage, especially for power users.

Charging speeds are a mixed bag. Oppo boasts 80W wired charging and 50W wireless charging, while Vivo offers a faster 90W wired charge but a slower 30W wireless charge.  Ultimately, the choice depends on your preference: wired speed or wireless convenience.

5. Connectivity & Extras

Both phones offer a similar suite of connectivity options, including Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, NFC, and optional satellite connectivity for the Vivo. Oppo might have a slight edge with USB Type-C 3.1 for potentially faster data transfer speeds.

For audiophiles, the Vivo takes the lead with its Hi-Res audio support offering superior sound quality. Both models utilize stereo speakers and support aptX HD for high-quality Bluetooth audio, making the absence of a 3.5mm jack-less painful. Security-wise, both rely on under-display fingerprint scanners.

6. Price and Availability

The Oppo Find X8 Pro is available in India with a single RAM and storage configuration, priced at ₹99,999. Vivo has yet to announce the pricing for the X200 Pro, but given the similarities in specifications and features, it’s expected to be in a similar range.

7. Verdict

Vivo may offer slightly more value with its superior camera, larger battery, and Hi-Res audio, making it especially appealing to content creators. However, the Oppo Find X8 Pro is also an excellent choice, particularly for those focused on camera performance.

Ultimately, the decision depends on your priorities. It’s worth waiting for the global launch of the Vivo X200 series to see if there’s any price difference between the two.

TECNO Interview: Breaking Barriers in Mobile Photography – Inside TECNO’s Revolutionary Universal Tone Technology

In today’s age when smartphone photography has become a very important part of our lives, the pursuit of representing diverse skin tones has become a very important challenge.

This is exactly what TECNO is aiming to solve with its Universal Tone technology – a solution that addresses long-standing issues of skin tone bias in digital photography.

TECNO ToneProud Campagin

Through an in-depth conversation with TECNO’s Ms. Fangyi Zhou, Director of Image Quality Testing and Assessment at Image Quality Testing Laboratory, we try and figure out how this innovation is reshaping the landscape of mobile photography while promoting inclusivity and diversity.

The Need for Universal Tone: Understanding Market Needs

Source: TECNO

The development of Universal Tone technology stems from TECNO’s deep-rooted understanding of emerging markets and their unique challenges. Rather than following industry trends, the company took a ground-up approach based on extensive market research and user feedback.

“Through extensive market research, we consistently observed that users in diverse regions face significant challenges with skin tone inaccuracies in smartphone photography,” explains Ms. Fangyi. “For instance, in Africa, portraits can often appear reddish or overly darkened in certain conditions, while in South and Southeast Asia, varied lighting conditions can result in significant color misrepresentation.”

This observation highlighted a fundamental issue in the smartphone industry: the inherent bias in existing imaging algorithms used by smartphones across the globe. “Algorithms in this space are often developed using benchmarks tailored to more mainstream markets and consumers, leading to the underrepresentation of users from emerging markets,” she added.

This realization further pushed the need for developing Universal Tone technology, building on TECNO’s years of expertise in imaging technology and commitment to authentic skin tone representation.

Technical Innovation: The Power of AI and Inclusive Data

What sets Universal Tone apart is its comprehensive approach to solving multi-skin tone imaging challenges. The technology represents a complete reimagining of imaging systems, focusing on diversity and inclusivity at its core.

“TECNO Universal Tone is not just an imaging technology, but a system that solves the problems seen in multi-skin tone imaging,” Ms. Fangyi emphasizes. “The comprehensive technology considers the full diversity of human skin tones to ensure inclusivity from inception.”

The system’s foundation lies in what TECNO claims is the industry’s largest and most inclusive skin tone database, featuring ever-expanding 268 skin tone patches. This extensive database powers an advanced AI-driven algorithm that ensures accurate skin tone restoration and calibration.

TECNO’s executive outlines three key differentiators of the technology:

TECNO places a high priority on underrepresented skin tones that are often overlooked in mobile imaging, especially darker and less common skin tones, ensuring that their technology truly serves a diverse range of users. The Universal Tone is a comprehensive technology for multi-skin portrait photography, offering a full system for skin color management, including evaluation, detection, classification, grading, calibration, and enhancement algorithms. Further, as Fangyi emphasized, what sets Universal Tone apart is its advanced skin tone restoration capabilities, achieved through a powerful combination of extensive and localized research and development, a scientific approach, and an inclusive skin tone database, surpassing previous AI-based skin tone technologies.

Regional Adaptation and Real-World Implementation

Understanding that different regions present unique challenges, TECNO has invested heavily in localization efforts.

When we asked for more details on localization of this technology, Ms. Fangyi revealed their comprehensive approach to regional optimization:

“In our markets—such as Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East—AI must be trained to account for how various factors in the shooting environment, like lighting conditions, can influence elements such as brightness, color temperature, and overall tone.”

“TECNO customizes the technology through extensive region-specific testing, taking into account factors such as lighting, color temperature, and spectral conditions. Dedicated local teams conduct tests across 200+ environmental scenarios per country, ensuring the technology delivers precise skin tone reproduction under diverse conditions.”

Social Impact and the #ToneProud Campaign

The company has launched the #ToneProud campaign to raise awareness about skin tone misrepresentation in photography.

“TECNO is launching the #ToneProud campaign to draw attention to this issue and to call for people to stand together to reject imaging that fails to accurately capture the true beauty of diversity,” the executive added. The campaign features celebrities from diverse backgrounds and encourages users to discover their own skin tone code through an interactive platform.

The impact of this technology extends beyond mere photography. As Ms. Fangyi reflects: “When we hear feedback from consumers in SSA, Southeast Asia, and other regions saying they can finally capture photos that truly reflect their skin tones, it’s incredibly rewarding. This isn’t just a technological milestone; it’s a profound gesture of respect and recognition for these communities.”

Looking Ahead: The Future of Inclusive Photography

The Universal Tone technology, currently available on TECNO’s latest devices including the PHANTOM V Fold2 5G, PHANTOM V Flip2 5G, and CAMON 30 Series, represents just the beginning of a larger mission. The company continues to expand its skin tone database and refine its algorithms.

“We believe that skin tones are diverse, and their representation should reflect the vast range of color perceptions seen by the human eye,” the executive shares. “Moving forward, we will continue to enhance our skin tone database to deliver increasingly accurate results.”

TECNO’s vision extends beyond their own products to influencing industry-wide change.

“This goes beyond simply providing a better or more expensive product; I think we are shaping a more equitable digital world. We hope that other brands will also recognize the importance of this issue and refine their technologies to better celebrate and represent human diversity.”

As smartphone photography continues to evolve, TECNO’s Universal Tone technology proves how technological innovation can address social inequities while delivering superior user experiences. By placing diversity and inclusion at the heart of their development process, TECNO is not just improving photography – they’re helping to create a more representative and equitable digital world.
