Motorola is making a strong comeback in the Indian smartphone market

Motorola smartphone

Motorola is gaining momentum in the Indian smartphone market. According to the latest data from IDC, the American company had a 5.7% share in the third quarter of 2024 in the Indian smartphone market. Last year, it was 2.4% for the same quarter. That’s a massive 149.5% growth, which no other smartphone brand had in the same period.

Vivo currently leads the Indian smartphone market with a 15.8% share in the third quarter of 2024, followed by Oppo with a 13.9% market share, and Samsung with a 12.3% market share. Apple is at 6th position with an 8.6% market share.

After Motorola, iQOO had the biggest jump of 101.4% in 3Q 2024 (compared to 3Q 2023) with a market share of 4.2%, but it is still behind Motorola. OnePlus is having a tough time, though. It declined from 6.2% to 3.6%, registering a 39.3% loss. OnePlus has also fallen behind Motorola in the Indian smartphone market.

Indian smartphone market share (Q3 2024) - IDC

Earlier this year, Prashanth Mani, executive director, mobile business group at Lenovo Asia Pacific, revealed that the company grew 100% by volume, the same in 2023, and is expected to continue the streak this year as well. The company had a 5% market share in 2023, and it’s projecting to double that to 8-10% this year. Even though it seems difficult at this point, its growth in the last few quarters has been impressive.

Motorola has recently fixed one of its biggest problems holding people back from getting a Motorola phone. It had a terrible software update policy. The brand offered only three Android upgrades, and that too, was only limited to high-end phones. The entry-level phones were hardly getting a single Android update.

Three Android upgrades are just unacceptable at a time when Google and Samsung are offering up to seven Android updates to their phones. Motorola has learned its lessons, though, and has recently started offering five Android upgrades to its new phones. First was the Motorola Edge Neo launched in September, and then this new software policy expanded to multiple phones launched thereafter.

Motorola is eyeing a top-three spot in India. While that’s a long way to go, the brand should be happy with the impressive growth it’s witnessing, and new buyers should be pleased with the extended software support.

Samsung XR glasses set to launch in Q3 2025: A Ray-Ban Meta rival with advanced AI features

Samsung is gearing up to expand its presence in the extended reality (XR) space, with its highly anticipated XR glasses slated for a Q3 2025 release.

Developed in collaboration with Google, the smart glasses are expected to share specifications with Ray-Ban Meta glasses while introducing advanced AI capabilities. With plans to produce 500,000 units initially, Samsung is aiming to make a significant impact in the wearable tech market.

Key details about Samsung’s XR glasses

According to a research report by Wellsen XR and details from Maeil Business Newspaper, Samsung’s upcoming XR glasses will feature the Qualcomm AR1 chipset, the same processor powering the Ray-Ban Meta glasses. The device will also include a 12MP camera and a 155mAh battery, closely mirroring the battery capacity of the Meta product. At 50 grams, the Samsung glasses will be slightly heavier than their Meta counterpart.

Interestingly, the report suggests that Samsung’s XR glasses will not include a display. This design choice seems driven by the challenge of maintaining a lightweight and compact form factor similar to Ray-Ban Meta glasses. Instead, the focus shifts to other features, with Google’s Gemini AI assistant handling tasks like payments, QR code recognition, gesture recognition, and face recognition.

This advanced AI integration sets the Samsung XR glasses apart, potentially offering a more powerful feature set than the Meta counterpart. For example, while Meta glasses utilize AI for multimodal analysis, QR code scanning, reminders, and translation previews, Samsung appears poised to expand on these functionalities, enhancing usability and interactivity.

There will also be a headset with more compute, more sensors, and high-resolution displays

Alongside these glasses, Samsung is reportedly developing a high-performance XR device akin to the Apple Vision Pro. This premium headset, rumored to run on Qualcomm’s XR2+ Gen 2 platform, is expected to feature high-resolution displays and significantly higher computing power. While the glasses aim to cater to lightweight, everyday use, the XR headset could target immersive applications, providing a balanced portfolio for various user needs.

Oppo K13 Pro tipped to rival OnePlus 13R with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and massive battery

Oppo is gearing up to shake up the sub-flagship segment with its upcoming K13 Pro, which is expected to debut sometime in 2025. The smartphone is rumored to feature Qualcomm’s powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, positioning it as a strong contender against competitors like the OnePlus Ace 5 (expected globally as the OnePlus 13R) and Realme GT Neo7. With a super-sized battery and premium upgrades, the “K13 Pro” could redefine Oppo’s K-series lineup.

Oppo K13 shaping up to be a new contender in the sub-flagship segment

The Oppo K12 series, featuring the mid-range Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chipset. Now, the K13 Pro is expected to take a significant leap with last year’s flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, as revealed by renowned leaker Digital Chat Station. The tipster also hints that one of the sub-flagship devices will boast a customized version of the 8 Gen 3 chip.

Beyond raw power, the K13 Pro could also introduce a 6,500mAh battery, a step up from the K12 Plus’s already impressive 6,400mAh capacity. Additionally, it might support wired charging speeds comparable to Oppo’s high-end Find X8 series, which ensures the device remains competitive in the fast-charging race.

With a fierce competition brewing among the Oppo K13 Pro, OnePlus Ace 5, and Realme GT Neo7, the sub-flagship “war” is expected to rival the intensity seen in higher-end models like the OnePlus 13 and Oppo Find X8 Ultra. However, the OnePlus Ace 5 is expected to be the first to make its way to the global market.

The Oppo K13 Pro seems to be a significant improvement over this year’s K12 Plus

The Oppo K12 offers a 5,500mAh battery with 100W charging, a 50MP main camera, an 8MP ultra-wide lens, and a 6.7-inch FHD+ display with 1,100 nits peak brightness. The K12 Plus further refined the formula with a larger 6,400mAh battery, maintaining the same display and processor while adding a slightly heavier build.

However, for those unwilling to wait, the iQOO Neo10 series is set to debut on November 29. The standard and Pro models feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Dimensity 9400 chipsets, respectively, paired with the company’s self-developed Q2 gaming chip.

Charging technology also sees a leap forward with support for 120W ultra-fast flash charging. The series includes a 100W PD-compatible charger and adds support for the 100W PPS protocol, ensuring versatility and rapid power delivery. The phones are equipped with a 6100mAh third-generation silicon battery, combining substantial capacity with a sleek 7.99mm body.

Software-wise, the Neo10 series will be the first to run Origin OS 5, which introduces unique gaming features. For instance, its game companion tool provides tactical suggestions based on the user’s lineup, identifies laning heroes, and offers real-time strategic advice during gameplay.

Both the Neo10 and Neo10 Pro models boast 8T LTPO displays, ensuring smooth visuals with adaptive refresh rates. The series is equipped with ultrasonic fingerprint scanners, allowing for a seamless one-swipe entry.

Nubia Z70 Ultra flexes Snapdragon 8 Elite on benchmark

Just ahead of its official unveiling, the Nubia Z70 Ultra has surfaced on Geekbench, flexing some impressive benchmark scores. The phone, which will join the ranks of other Snapdragon 8 Elite flagships, achieves some of the highest scores in its category.

The Geekbench listing, with the model number “NX736J,” shows the Z70 Ultra scoring 3203 in single-core and 10260 in multi-core performance. It also features 16GB of RAM and runs Android 15 straight out of the box.

Nubia has not confirmed if the Z70 Ultra includes a stronger cooling system than its predecessor. However, the company recently teased that its Snapdragon 8 Elite is optimized for “supreme performance.” Beyond the processor, confirmed features also include LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 storage.

What we know so far

The Z70 Ultra appears to be an evolution of the Z60 Ultra Leading Version, with some notable tweaks. The primary camera gets a new spot at the top left corner, with the ultra-wide sensor taking the former telephoto lens position.

Speaking of the telephoto lens, its housing appears significantly slimmer despite boasting a periscope lens and a whopping 100x digital zoom.

It’s not just about the looks, though. Nubia has been heavily teasing the phone’s software features. AI is apparently at the forefront, with tools like time management aids, keyboard-free interaction, and a seemingly industry-first real-time translation for WeChat calls.

Nubia Z70 Ultra

The phone also hints at a more integrated future with “vehicle-machine interaction” and advanced algorithms inspired by tech giants such as Tesla and Apple. It even teases touch-based interaction features, though details remain under wraps.

The display is another highlight. The Z70 Ultra boasts a 1.5K resolution with a generous 6.85-inch size, a smooth 144Hz refresh rate, and a peak brightness of 2000 nits. Add to that a pixel density of 430 PPI and ultra-thin 1.25mm bezels for an immersive viewing experience.

There’s also an Independent Pixel Driver and AI Transparency Algorithm 7.0, supposedly to improve light transmittance for a clearer view. Durability-wise, the phone is expected to be IP68 and IP69 water and dust-resistant.

According to reports, the Reno 13 will feature a 6.59-inch screen, while the Pro model will boast a larger 6.83-inch display.

The rear designs of the Reno 13 and 13 Pro are almost identical. The Pro edition features an oblong design for the third camera and the LED flash unit. iQOO Neo 10, Neo 10 Pro Geekbench listing confirms Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, Dimensity 9400 chipsets

Recently, two Vivo phones with model numbers V2425A and V2426A were approved by Chinese certification platforms, such as 3C and MIIT. According to reports, the two devices are part of the iQOO Neo 10 series, set to make its debut by the end of this month. Therefore, it can be said that the V2425A is the iQOO Neo 10, whereas the V2426 is its Pro sibling. Both devices have 16 GB of RAM and Android 15, as per their Geekbench listings. While the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is the chipset from last year, the D9400 is a brand-new chip that was previously seen powering the Vivo X200 series, which made its debut in October in China.

Comparing Oppo Find X8 and Vivo X200: Which is Better?

OPPO Find X8 and vivo X200 are premium smartphones packed with advanced features, targeting users seeking top performance, impressive cameras, and fast charging. With similar specifications but distinct highlights, each device caters to different preferences. This comparison delves into their differences to help you decide which suits your needs best.

1. Design and Display

Oppo Find X8 and Vivo X200
OPPO Find X8

Both the OPPO Find X8 and vivo X200 offer premium designs with glass backs and aluminum frames, contributing to a solid, high-end feel. However, the OPPO Find X8 features a Gorilla Glass Victus 2 front, offering improved durability over the vivo X200’s standard glass. In terms of display, both phones are equipped with stunning AMOLED screens, providing vibrant colors and deep blacks. The Find X8 stands out with its Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support, making it slightly superior for media consumption. Additionally, the Find X8’s display reaches an impressive 1600 nits in peak brightness, compared to the X200’s 4500 nits peak brightness. However, the X200’s 120Hz refresh rate and 1B color support are also great for smooth scrolling and vivid imagery.

Overall, while both displays are excellent, the OPPO’s combination of higher peak brightness and Dolby Vision gives it a slight edge for users who prioritize immersive content experiences.

2. Specifications

Oppo Find X8 and Vivo X200
vivo X200

Both phones are powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 chipset, ensuring top-tier performance and energy efficiency. They also come with ample memory and storage options, including UFS 4.0 for fast read/write speeds, and no card slot for expandable storage. The OPPO Find X8, however, offers more flexibility with higher RAM options, with up to 1TB of storage and 16GB of RAM, while the X200 maxes out at 512GB of storage. On battery performance, the Find X8 boasts a 5630mAh battery and supports 80W wired charging, compared to the X200’s 5800mAh and 90W charging. Despite the vivo’s slightly larger battery, the OPPO’s faster wired charging and efficient power management make it more appealing for power users. The X200 also offers reverse charging, a neat feature for those who want to share power, which the Find X8 lacks.

Overall, the OPPO has a slight advantage in charging technology, but the vivo’s reverse charging feature gives it a practical edge for some users.

3. Camera

Oppo Find X8 and Vivo X200
Oppo Find X8

Both the OPPO Find X8 and vivo X200 offer remarkable triple camera setups with 50MP wide, 50MP periscope telephoto, and 50MP ultrawide sensors, making them excellent choices for photography enthusiasts. However, the Find X8 distinguishes itself with Hasselblad Color Calibration, promising more natural and accurate colors. It also supports 10-bit video and Dolby Vision for advanced video recording capabilities, making it ideal for users who value content creation.

The vivo X200, with Zeiss optics and T* lens coating, provides sharp and detailed images, especially in low light, but it lacks Dolby Vision support. Both devices capture 4K video at 30/60fps, but the OPPO’s superior video features may make it a better choice for vloggers or creators.

Ultimately, the Find X8’s combination of color accuracy, video capabilities, and camera processing makes it the better all-around option for serious photographers and videographers.

4. Pricing

Both phones are priced closely, with the OPPO Find X8 at approximately 550 EUR and the vivo X200 at 560 EUR. Despite the slight difference, they are positioned within the premium segment, offering flagship-level features at competitive prices. Given the shared specs, the OPPO Find X8 offers more value with its superior charging technology and additional RAM/storage options, which may appeal to power users and tech enthusiasts looking for the best in performance. The vivo X200 is priced slightly higher, but the inclusion of reverse charging and Zeiss optics may be more appealing to some users who prioritize a slightly different photography experience.

Overall, the price difference is minimal, but the OPPO Find X8’s overall package makes it a slightly better value in terms of performance and features.

5. Conclusion

Oppo Find X8 and Vivo X200

The OPPO Find X8 shines with its Dolby Vision support, Hasselblad Color Calibration, and faster charging technology, making it a standout choice for content creators and those looking for superior multimedia capabilities. The 1TB storage option, coupled with up to 16GB of RAM, also gives the Find X8 a major advantage for power users who require more memory and space.

On the other hand, the vivo X200 offers reverse wired charging, a unique feature that allows users to share power with other devices. Additionally, the Zeiss optics and T* lens coating on the X200 enhance image quality, providing superior clarity and color accuracy, especially in low-light scenarios. For users who want a complete photography package with excellent zoom and low-light performance, the X200 may be more appealing.

Ultimately, the OPPO Find X8 is better for those seeking a more comprehensive flagship experience, but the vivo X200’s unique features will attract users who prioritize photography and reverse charging.

Xiaomi to replace GetApps with a new app store in India

In a significant move for the Indian smartphone market, Xiaomi has announced that it will phase out its GetApps store and replace it with the Indus Appstore, powered by PhonePe. The transition is set to take effect from January 2025, impacting all Xiaomi, Redmi, and Poco devices sold in India.

Xiaomi to replace GetApps

Xiaomi’s GetApps to Be Discontinued in India

GetApps, often criticized for its aggressive advertising and system bloat, has been a point of contention among Xiaomi users. The shift to the Indus Appstore is seen as a strategic move by Xiaomi to enhance user experience and comply with evolving regulatory norms.

The Indus Appstore, launched earlier this year, is an Android-based app marketplace that aims to offer a more localized and user-friendly experience for Indian consumers. It will provide access to a wide range of apps and games, including popular titles and regional offerings. Currently, it has more than over 200,000 apps and games across 45 categories.

It supports 12 Indian languages as well. PhonePe’s integration with the app store will enable seamless payments and other digital services. The transition will be seamless for users as it will occur through system updates. GetApps will no longer be preloaded or supported on any Xiaomi devices in India, whether new or existing.

While the transition to the Indus Appstore is expected to bring several benefits, including a cleaner user interface and potentially fewer ads, some users may have concerns about the potential for data privacy issues and the overall performance of the new app store. It remains to be seen how well the Indus Appstore will perform in comparison to the Google Play Store, which is the dominant app store in India.

Xiaomi plans to launch a variety of smartphones in India in 2025, covering flagship to budget segments. The Xiaomi 15 series, including the Xiaomi 15 Ultra, is expected by March, while the Redmi Note 14 series is set for early 2025. Budget options like the Redmi A4 and Redmi 14 are also anticipated to cater to entry-level buyers. Rumors hint at a Xiaomi 15 Civi launch mid-year.

As Xiaomi continues to expand its presence in the Indian market, this strategic partnership with PhonePe is a significant step towards strengthening its position and meeting the evolving needs of its customers.
