Li Auto, a company based in Beijing, sold 40,422 vehicles in October. That’s 12.1% more than in September and a whopping 302% more than last year. Guangzhou’s Xpeng wasn’t far behind, with 20,002 units sold, up 30.7% from the previous month. And Nio, from Shanghai, sold 16,074 units, 2.8% more than in September.

But it’s not just rich people buying EVs. More and more middle-class folks are also making the switch. They’re doing it because they care about the environment and because they like the smart features that EVs offer. Big EV makers like Xpeng, Nio, and Li Auto are really cashing in on this trend. They’re offering cars that are not just good for the planet but also packed with cool tech. And tech is a great way to attract new customers.

While these companies are competing with Tesla in China’s premium EV market, there’s another big player that’s targeting a different crowd. BYD, the world’s biggest EV maker, sold 301,833 units in October, 5% more than in September. In a region that’s home to more than 650 million people, why is the digital economy so skewed towards the urban elite? One reason could be rising inflation and interest rates, making consumers more cautious with their wallets. But that doesn’t entirely explain the digital divide. The investment climate also mirrors this caution. Private funding for companies in Southeast Asia has nosedived to a six-year low. Investors who hopped on the Southeast Asia bandwagon five to seven years ago are now seeing only a 4% return on average, a far cry from the 50% in China and 40% in the U.S.

So, where does that leave internet giants like Grab, Sea, and GoTo? Facing intense competition in urban markets while still struggling to tap into the vast yet untapped rural consumer base. With e-commerce estimated to reach just $186 billion by 2025, these companies may have to rewrite their growth strategies.

Accounting for nearly 33% of the total volume, plug-in electric car sales surged by 78% to 17,005 units. This year, the brand is on track to hit the milestone of selling over 250,000 electric cars, hinting at the public’s growing affinity for cleaner alternatives.

What’s interesting is the internal composition of these electric sales. Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) have recorded a massive 167% year-over-year increase, while Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) have also seen a solid bump of 46%. So far, this year’s sales data reveals that BEVs and PHEVs form 16% and 22.5% of the total sales, respectively.

In a bid to increase the conversion of free subscribers into paid ones, Spotify seems to be exploring putting some of the features behind a paywall, only accessible to the paid subscribers.

In the latest development, Spotify appears to have locked down the lyrics feature, which shows the lyrics of the currently playing song on the screen, behind a paywall. For the free users, the company is showing a message that reads: “Enjoy lyrics on Spotify Premium.”

According to the company’s PR executive CJ Stanley, the change is not yet permanent as the company is currently testing it with a limited number of users in a couple of markets. Since the company is testing the feature, it’s safe to assume that it has plans to roll out the feature on the platform.

Spotify has revealed that its monthly users on the ad-supported tier or the free subscribers have increased by 34 percent over the last year, reaching 343 million. On the other hand, the number of paid subscribers increased by 17 percent to 220 million.
