The EV industry has reached a quiet but important milestone. For the first time, a mass-produced passenger EV is set to use a sodium-ion battery, a technology long discussed but never deployed at this scale. The car in question is the Changan Nevo A06, developed by Changan Automobile and powered by batteries from CATL.

The announcement follows extensive winter testing in Inner Mongolia, where temperatures regularly drop well below what most EVs are designed to handle. According to the companies involved, the Nevo A06 was able to charge normally at around -30°C and continued operating at temperatures as low as -50°C. At -40°C, the battery reportedly retained more than 90% of its original capacity, a level of performance that is difficult to achieve with conventional lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries.

The vehicle uses CATL’s Naxtra sodium-ion battery pack, which the company says is the first of its kind certified for use in passenger cars. The initial version has a capacity of 45 kWh and delivers a claimed range of just over 400 km on China’s CLTC test cycle.

On paper, that puts it close to entry-level LFP-based EVs, but with far better cold-weather behavior. CATL says the pack can deliver several times more power than comparable LFP batteries at sub-zero temperatures, helping maintain acceleration and cabin heating without heavy range loss.

Sodium-ion batteries have drawn attention partly because they avoid lithium altogether. Sodium is cheaper, more abundant, and less vulnerable to supply-chain disruptions. Safety is another factor: CATL says the Naxtra cells are far more resistant to thermal runaway and have passed extreme abuse tests without catching fire.

CATL describes this as the beginning of a “dual-chemistry” phase for EVs, where sodium-ion and lithium-ion batteries coexist depending on climate, cost, and use case. The Nevo A06 is expected to launch in China around mid-2026, with sodium-ion packs eventually spreading across Changan’s wider lineup.

For now, this remains a China-focused rollout. Still, it’s a clear signal that sodium-ion batteries are no longer just a lab experiment. In cold regions especially, they may soon offer a practical alternative to lithium-based EVs, without the usual compromises.

After first rolling out sodium-ion batteries in commercial vehicles, CATL has now begun deploying them in passenger vehicles. The batteries fall under CATL’s sodium battery brand, Naxtra, which is preparing for public winter testing in passenger cars.

According to reports, Changan’s Oshan models are among the first to take part in these tests, with passenger cars from GAC and JAC expected to follow later.

The focus on winter testing is not accidental. One of sodium-ion batteries’ biggest promises is reliable performance in extreme cold. Lithium-ion batteries, in general, tend to struggle in such conditions. More on that later. 

CATL’s sodium-ion batteries have no risk of fire or explosion 

CATL officially unveiled its sodium-ion battery in April last year, and on paper, the numbers are quite impressive. CATL claims an energy density of 175Wh/kg, a hybrid electric range of over 200km, and a pure electric range exceeding 500km. The battery also supports 5C super-fast charging and is rated for up to 10,000 charge cycles, which suggests a long usable lifespan.

Safety is where CATL is making its strongest case. The company says its sodium-ion batteries have passed extreme tests such as needle penetration, electric drill penetration, extrusion, and even battery sawing without catching fire or exploding. That’s a big reason why sodium-ion batteries are the next viable options for EVs. 

As we mentioned earlier, the sodium-ion batteries also perform exceptionally in cold weather. In real-world tests at –30°C, CATL says the battery can charge from 30 percent to 80 percent in about 30 minutes, while retaining 93 percent of its usable capacity. Even at just a 10% state of charge, vehicles were reportedly able to maintain highway speeds of 120km/h.

CATL’s sodium-ion battery passed certification under China’s new national standard in September last year. The regulation introduces stricter safety requirements around heat diffusion, underbody impacts, and fast-charging durability. Independent testing by the China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC) also backed CATL’s safety claims at both the cell and battery pack levels.

Beyond safety, sodium-ion technology could help reduce reliance on lithium, lower costs, and improve sustainability.

Volkswagen is recalling more than 44,000 ID.4 electric vehicles in the United States due to battery-related fire risks, according to two recall notices published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Tuesday. Both recalls affect recent model-year ID.4 vehicles and involve potential issues with the high-voltage battery system.

The first recall is relatively small, covering 670 ID.4 vehicles from the 2023 and 2024 model years. According to Volkswagen’s report to the NHTSA, these vehicles may have a manufacturing defect in their battery cell modules. During a specific production period, electrodes inside the battery cells may have been misaligned, which could increase the risk of a battery fire under certain conditions.

While a permanent fix is being prepared, Volkswagen is asking affected owners to take several precautions. These include limiting battery charging to 80 percent, avoiding DC fast charging, and parking the vehicle outdoors after charging. Volkswagen says its final solution will be to replace the potentially faulty battery modules free of charge.

The second recall affects more than 40,000 Volkswagen ID.4

The second recall is much larger, affecting 43,881 ID.4 vehicles from the 2023 to 2025 model years. In this case, the issue is related to missing battery monitoring software. The vehicles were not equipped with Volkswagen’s “self-discharge detection” software, which is designed to identify unusual battery behavior.

According to the recall report, in rare situations, a high-voltage battery module could experience thermal runaway, a condition that can lead to a vehicle fire. Volkswagen notes that a clear root cause has not yet been identified for all reported incidents. As part of the recall, the company will perform battery health checks, install updated software, and replace battery modules if needed.

Both recalls involve battery modules supplied by SK Battery America, a unit of South Korean battery manufacturer SK On. Between 2024 and 2025, at least five battery overheating incidents involving the ID.4 were reported in the US. Investigations linked the failures to hardware abnormalities, including electrode displacement inside the battery.

The ID.4 is Volkswagen’s best-selling electric vehicle and a key part of its shift toward electrification. In 2025, global sales of the ID.4, including the coupe-style ID.5, reached 163,400 units, a year-over-year increase of nearly 27 percent. This recall will definitely make a dent in Volkswagen’s electric vehicle profile.

The electric vehicle (EV) industry ended 2025 with a major shift. Sodium-ion batteries, long viewed as a secondary technology, have now become a serious contender in the EV battery race.

Two major developments marked this shift: CATL’s commercial production of its Naxtra sodium-ion cells and Zhaona New Energy’s announcement of a high-density solid-state sodium-ion prototype. These breakthroughs could push sodium to the front of the pack in affordable and sustainable battery technology.

Sodium Clears the Energy Hurdle

CATL launched its Naxtra sodium-ion brand in April 2025. Mass production began in December, and the new cells reached an energy density of 175 Wh/kg. This performance exceeded many lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, which typically range between 160 and 170 Wh/kg. The Naxtra cells now allow full-size EVs to achieve up to 500 kilometers of range. This puts sodium-ion batteries in direct competition with mainstream lithium-based alternatives.

Zhaona New Energy added another milestone in December. The company revealed a solid-state sodium-ion battery that delivers an energy density of 348.5 Wh/kg. The design uses a ceramic-coated structure and eliminates the anode, which improves both energy density and long-term stability. This result brings sodium-ion performance closer to high-end nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) lithium batteries.

Lower Cost, Better in Cold, Safer to Ship

Sodium-ion batteries provide three clear advantages: cost reduction, cold-weather reliability, and shipping safety.

Sodium is inexpensive and widely available. It does not require high-cost materials like cobalt or nickel and can be sourced from sea salt. It also avoids copper by using aluminum current collectors. This allows battery makers to cut production costs significantly. Analysts estimate sodium-ion cells could drop to $40/kWh, far lower than current LFP costs, which hover around $70/kWh. That price point makes $20,000 EVs commercially viable without subsidies.

In cold climates, sodium-ion cells show strong performance. The Naxtra batteries retain 90% of their capacity even at -40°C. This addresses one of lithium’s biggest flaws, significant range loss in freezing conditions.

Sodium-ion batteries can also be safely discharged to 0.0V without causing damage, unlike lithium batteries, which must retain a minimum charge to avoid internal short circuits. This zero-voltage tolerance improves safety during storage and transportation by reducing the risk of thermal runaway. It also allows simpler packaging and helps lower overall shipping and handling costs.

Mixing Sodium and Lithium

Battery makers are increasingly exploring a dual-chemistry approach rather than relying on a single cell type. In these hybrid concepts, sodium-ion cells are used for better cold-weather performance, fast charge and discharge, and lower costs, while lithium-ion cells continue to provide high energy density for long driving range.

Such designs aim to balance performance and cost, with long-range figures still driven mainly by lithium-ion chemistry rather than sodium-ion alone. The mixed-chemistry approach gives automakers more flexibility to tune battery behavior for different climates, use cases, and regional requirements, although large-scale commercial deployment is still in the early stages.

Global Race to Build with Salt

Sodium-ion battery production is scaling rapidly worldwide, with China leading the push through companies such as CATL, BYD, and HiNa Battery. BYD’s new plant in Qinghai is already producing sodium-ion cells for entry-level electric vehicles.

India is also increasing investment via players like Reliance and KPIT, focusing on applications such as three-wheelers and light commercial vehicles. In Europe, France-based TIAMAT is developing fast-charging sodium-ion cells, while in the U.S., companies like Natron Energy are targeting grid-scale energy storage solutions.

Sodium’s wide availability gives countries an opportunity to reduce dependence on lithium imports. It also removes the need for cobalt and nickel mining, which comes with high environmental and ethical costs. Sodium-ion batteries are easier to recycle and meet new sustainability standards in Europe and other regions.

Will Sodium Replace Lithium?

Not entirely. Lithium batteries still dominate in performance-heavy applications such as sports cars and long-haul trucks. They remain lighter and more compact for the same energy capacity. However, sodium-ion batteries now offer a better fit for most consumer EVs. They reduce costs, improve cold-weather performance, and simplify logistics. These advantages make sodium a more practical choice for mass adoption.

The sodium-ion shift represents more than a new battery type. It changes the structure of the EV industry. By solving cost, climate, and safety challenges at once, sodium-ion batteries are well-positioned to power the next phase of global electrification.

Xiaomi Auto reached a major milestone in December 2025 by delivering over 50,000 vehicles in a single month. This marks the highest monthly delivery total for the brand since it entered the electric vehicle market. The company had already crossed the 40,000 monthly delivery mark for three consecutive months prior to this record.

By the end of November 2025, Xiaomi Auto had delivered 361,625 vehicles for the year. With December’s strong performance, total deliveries for 2025 exceeded 410,000 units, surpassing the company’s original full-year target of 350,000.

As per China Passenger Car Association data, the cumulative vehicle deliveries had surpassed 500,000 units by November 2025. The company achieved this figure in less than 20 months, setting a new global record among EV brands for the fastest time to reach half a million deliveries.

Xiaomi Auto also appears to be preparing an aggressive product expansion in 2026. Reports from Chinese media indicate that the company plans to launch four new models next year. These include a refreshed SU7, an SU7 Executive Edition, a five-seat range extended SUV, and a seven-seat range extended SUV.

The updated SU7 and the larger SUV are expected to launch in the first half of the year. The Executive Edition and the five-seat SUV are scheduled to arrive in the second half. Interest is high around the upcoming SUVs, especially the larger model, which has already been seen in road testing under the internal name Kunlun.

Based on earlier industry reports, Xiaomi’s upcoming large SUV could launch as the YU9. The model is expected to compete with vehicles such as the AITO M9 and Li Auto L9, with a similar price segment.

In related news, Xiaomi has recently revealed the official repair pricing for the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, and fixing the camera-focused flagship is expected to be expensive.

BYD is currently the world’s largest EV maker by volume. It builds its own batteries, motors, and chips, including its signature Blade Battery. Models like the Seagull continue to undercut global rivals on pricing, while still offering competitive range and features.

In 2025, BYD expanded production into Hungary and Brazil to avoid import tariffs and meet rising demand. The company also pushed into the premium space with its Yangwang sub-brand, which now competes directly with established luxury automakers.

Xiaomi

NIO

Chinese firms build much of their own supply chains, while Western brands depend on Tier-1 suppliers. The focus in China is on software, user experience, and in-car AI. In contrast, many global brands still prioritize traditional metrics like paint quality and ride feel.

High tariffs in the US and EU have slowed some exports, but Chinese automakers are adapting. BYD and Geely have set up production hubs overseas. Others are increasing their plug-in hybrid offerings to remain competitive while EV policies remain unclear.

BYD has overtaken Tesla in global electric vehicle (EV) sales through the first nine months of 2025. The Chinese automaker delivered 1.61 million battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) from January to September, compared to Tesla’s 1.22 million units. This marks a lead of 388,000 vehicles for BYD, based on data released by both companies.

BYD’s sales increased 37% year-on-year, while Tesla’s sales declined by 6%. This is the fourth consecutive quarter where BYD has outsold Tesla in global BEV sales. The data suggests that BYD is likely to finish the year as the top-selling EV brand globally.

Tesla posted a record quarter between July and September with 497,100 global deliveries. However, it still trailed BYD, which shipped 582,500 BEVs in the same period. Tesla’s strong quarter came as U.S. customers rushed to take advantage of federal EV subsidies that expired at the end of September.

Tesla’s performance in China also received a boost with the launch of the Model Y L, a six-seat long-wheelbase SUV. The model reportedly received 120,000 orders shortly after launch. However, Tesla continues to face pressure in Europe and Australia, where competition from local and Chinese brands has intensified.

While Tesla remains a BEV-only manufacturer, BYD continues to sell both BEVs and plug-in hybrids. This strategy has helped BYD maintain high volume despite intense price competition in China. Analysts expect BYD to deliver 2.17 million BEVs by the end of 2025, while Tesla is projected to reach around 1.61 million.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has warned of a “rough few quarters” ahead. The company has shifted focus to autonomous driving and robotics, though these areas have yet to make a significant financial impact.

BYD’s lower average selling price and broad product portfolio have allowed it to capture market share rapidly. The company’s ability to sustain momentum in international markets will likely determine whether it can retain its lead into 2026.

Thanks to this, it can hit a top speed of 152km/h, going from 0 to 40 km/h in just 2 seconds.

As per the brand’s official claim, the 5.2kWh battery pack on the Ola S1 Pro Sport has an IDC range of 320 kilometers on a single full charge. Riders also get a 7-inch display with touchscreen support for crucial data, including navigation, alerts, performance, and even optional AR Helmet support for real-time racing lines. Ola built the S1 Pro Sport with advanced safety systems like an ADAS camera on the front for collision alerts, blind spot detection, and more.

The brand new electric scooter was announced for a starting price tag of Rs 1.5 lakhs (ex-showroom) for the 4kWh model, while the higher end 5.2kWh variant costs Rs 1.65 lakhs (ex-showroom). Tesla has officially launched the Model Y electric SUV in India, marking the company’s long-anticipated debut in the country. The launch follows a teaser released last week and coincides with the opening of Tesla’s first Experience Centre in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex.

Tesla will offer two rear-wheel drive variants of the Model Y. Bookings are now open on the official website, and deliveries are scheduled to begin later this year. The base Rear-Wheel Drive variant will start shipping in Q3 2025, while the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive model will be available from Q4 2025. Initial deliveries will be limited to Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram.

The Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive is priced at ₹60,99,690 (on-road), while the Long Range version costs ₹69,07,690. These prices include registration and taxes but may vary depending on state regulations.

The Model Y features a minimal exterior design with updated front and rear lightbars, a panoramic glass roof, and acoustic laminated glass to reduce road noise. Inside the cabin, Tesla has included soft-touch materials, ambient lighting, and aluminum trim. The dashboard features a 15.4-inch central touchscreen and an 8-inch display for rear passengers.

Both variants include heated and ventilated front seats, heated and power-reclining second-row seats, and dual-zone climate control. Tesla claims the standard Model Y offers a WLTP range of 500 km and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. The Long Range model increases the range to 622 km and completes the same sprint in 5.6 seconds.

The Model Y supports Tesla’s digital ecosystem, which includes Tesla Theater for streaming, Tesla Arcade for in-car gaming, and app-based remote controls. Standard features also include a 9-speaker sound system, dashcam and Sentry Mode, Bluetooth rear seat controls, and route-aware charging suggestions.

Safety features include Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Warning, Blind-Spot Collision Warning, and Lane Departure Avoidance. Tesla has included eight external cameras, including a new front-facing unit, to support future software-based driver-assist upgrades.

Customers can opt for additional upgrades such as exterior paint options priced between ₹95,000 and ₹1,95,000, a Black and White interior for ₹95,000, and Full Self-Driving Capability for ₹6,00,000.

Tesla plans to expand its presence across metro cities in India, including New Delhi. The company also aims to build local support infrastructure such as service centers, delivery hubs, and charging stations.

Tesla’s pricing in India remains significantly higher than in the U.S., where the Model Y starts at $44,990. The price increase is largely due to high import duties and luxury taxes. Tesla has not yet confirmed any plans for local manufacturing, which would make the Model Y eligible for lower import duties under India’s new EV policy.

Lucid Motors has set a new Guinness World Record for the longest distance driven by an electric car on a single charge. The Lucid Air Grand Touring traveled 1,205 kilometers from St. Moritz, Switzerland to Munich, Germany without stopping to charge. The drive included alpine roads, highways, and secondary roads. This beats the previous record of 1,045 kilometers set in June 2025 by 160 kilometers.

The Lucid Air Grand Touring is powered by the company’s proprietary electric powertrain. It delivers 831 PS and has a WLTP range of 960 kilometers. It uses as little as 13.5 kWh per 100 kilometers and can reach a top speed of 270 kilometers per hour. The car supports ultra-fast charging, allowing it to add up to 400 kilometers of range in 16 minutes. It seats five and features a spacious interior made from premium materials.

This is the second Guinness World Record involving Lucid and London-based entrepreneur Umit Sabanci. In 2024, Sabanci drove a Lucid Air Grand Touring across nine countries on a single charge, setting the record for most countries visited in a production electric vehicle without recharging.

Sabanci said this new journey builds on that achievement. “When I completed the nine-country trip in 2024, it was just the beginning,” he said. “This new record shows how far electric cars can really go. It’s not just the future. It’s already happening.”

Lucid’s Senior Vice President of Product and Chief Engineer Eric Bach said the record proves Lucid’s lead in EV technology. “Lucid vehicles use less energy and go further than any other EV on the market,” he said.

The Lucid Air Grand Touring is rated at 611 kW, with WLTP-tested ranges between 817 and 960 kilometers. The actual range could vary depending on driving behavior, traffic, road conditions, and weather.

Geely Auto has launched the Galaxy A7 hybrid sedan, its latest model built on the new Global Intelligent Electric Architecture (GEA). It features the EM Super Hybrid 2.0 system and was unveiled at the Geely Science and Art Museum in Chongqing.

The Galaxy A7 delivers fuel efficiency of 2.67 liters per 100 kilometers and offers a driving range of over 2,100 kilometers. The hybrid engine has a thermal efficiency of 47.26%. It also includes the Xingrui AI Cloud Power 2.0 system and is the only model in its class with backup power from P1 and P3 motors, which keeps the car running even if the engine fails.

The A7 is the largest in its class. It has a wheelbase of 2,845 mm and a body length of 4,918 mm. The total cabin space is 4.2 square meters. Rear passengers get 950 mm of legroom and 132 mm of knee space. The seats have 10 layers and include a 14-point massage system for the waist, back, hips, and legs. There are 28 storage compartments and a 535-liter trunk.

The car keeps a classic sedan look with modern upgrades. It has 21 design elements to reduce drag, giving it a low drag coefficient of 0.229. The front has an integrated headlight bar with a 180-meter range. The rear has a “Sunrise” LED light bar. Inside, it has a layered design using leather, wood, and matte metal. Other features include 2,360 mm ambient lighting, music-enabled headrests, and large rear window panels for better light.

The A7 is the first to use the Flyme Auto system. It runs on a 23.5 EFLOPS AI platform and supports voice control, lane navigation, traffic light info, and full mobile connectivity.

The Short Blade Battery passed more than 100 extreme tests, including fire, water, and drop tests. The car body is reinforced with a high-strength frame and MacPherson suspension.

The Geely Galaxy A7 is set to launch in China in Q3 this year, with an estimated price range of 100,000 to 150,000 yuan (approximately 13,910 to 20,870 USD).

XPENG has launched the MONA M03 Max, a new electric hatchback priced at $20,000 (RMB 150,000) in China. It’s the only EV in this price range that offers city-level AI smart driving without any added subscriptions.

The M03 Max is powered by XPENG’s in-house AI Turing Smart Driving System. It uses two NVIDIA Orin-X chips with 508 TOPS of computing power, four times higher than other cars in its class. The system combines perception, decision-making, and control in one platform. It relies on 27 sensors and a Surround Reality Display to detect over 50 road elements like signs and obstacles. The car supports shared control between the driver and the system, with no interruptions during manual steering. It also includes advanced parking features and point-to-point assisted driving.

The smart cockpit runs on the new AI Tianji System 5.7.0. It adds over 300 new features and uses XPENG’s XGPT language model. Voice control now covers more than 90% of the car’s functions, with most commands completing in under one second. The voice assistant also supports free-flow conversations and a deep thinking mode for context-aware responses.

Inside, the M03 Max has a 15.6-inch center display and an 18-speaker 7.1.4 surround sound setup. The driver’s seat includes tri-zone lumbar support with a massage function. Side mirrors are frameless and include heating, auto-folding, memory, and reverse tilt. A blue light indicator signals when assisted driving is active.

The M03 Max comes in two range options: 600 km and 502 km. The Plus version offers 620 km and 515 km options. These versions aim to meet a range of user needs. Since the MONA M03 Pro launched in August 2024, XPENG has delivered 120,000 units, setting a delivery record among Chinese EV startups. The M03 Max currently has no global release plans, but XPENG confirms that future MONA models will target international markets.

Xiaomi has officially launched the SU7 Ultra, a high-performance electric sedan priced at 529,900 yuan ($72,988). It features a blistering 0-100 km/h acceleration time of just 1.98 seconds and a top speed exceeding 350 km/h, positioning it as the fastest four-door production car.

Xiaomi SU7 Ultra Specifications

The SU7 Ultra comes with Xiaomi’s Super Three-Motor System, which equips a dual V8s + V6s all-wheel-drive layout capable of delivering an astonishing 1,548 PS of peak power. Its V8 motor spins at up to 27,200 rpm, ensuring incredible acceleration, while the torque vectoring system enhances handling precision. It sprints from 0-200 km/h in just 5.86 seconds and covers a quarter-mile in 9.23 seconds.

For high-speed stability, the SU7 Ultra sports an aerodynamic package that includes a fixed carbon fiber rear wing, an active rear diffuser, and U-shaped wind blades. MG released a new car preview last Saturday, announcing that it will launch a new compact pure electric vehicle in the Indian market. it will be known as “India’s first smart CUV.” According to the outline shown in the preview, this new car could be considered a “rebranded” model of Baojun Yunduo under SAIC-GM-Wuling.

This car adopts a new design style, which is officially named “Sky Aesthetics”. As you can see from the image, the car offers a relatively rounded shape in the front. It is also reported that all models are equipped with LED headlights. The side of the body includes hidden D-pillars, hidden door handles, and five-spoke low-drag wheels.

Speaking of size, this electric car has a length, width, and height of 4295/1850/1652mm respectively. It comes with a wheelbase of 2700mm.

The “Lingxi Edition” model under Baojun Yunduo, which focuses on smart driving features, is equipped with the “Lingxi Intelligent Driving 2.0”. This is an intelligent driving system, which is reportedly jointly developed by Baojun Automobile and DJI.

Baojun Yunduo is equipped with a 15.6-inch central control screen and electrically adjustable driver/passenger seats. The exterior rearview mirrors support electric adjustment + heating. When it comes to power, Baojun Yunduo is equipped with lithium iron phosphate batteries. The battery capacity of the 360 Plus and 360 Pro is 37.9 kW⋅h, which offers a range of 360km and supports 3.3kW charging. On the other hand, the battery capacity of the 460 Pro and 460 Max is 50.6 kWh, which reportedly offers a range of 460km and supports 6.6kW charging. The driving motor reportedly produces maximum torque and speed of 200 N⋅m and 150km/h respectively.

SAIC‘s Feifan Automobile also announced during the Geneva Motor Show in February this year that it will expand outside its home country. The company has officially unveiled the Feifan F7 sedan and the Feifan R7 coupe SUV in the home country. Xiaomi has released the HyperOS 1.2.3 update for the Xiaomi SU7 electric vehicle. The latest software update brings many additional features onboard the SU7. The additions include an optimized brake disc high-temperature reminder and a traffic light reminder.

The new update will further optimize the performance of the SU7 in providing a safe and comfortable ride. It will optimize the comfort, efficiency, and safety of navigation assistance available on the SU7. The added traffic light reminder supports green light reminders when at the traffic light or following a vehicle in a straight lane with markings. The update also adds chassis light parking light mode, color setting, and charging light effect linkage function. A newly added function allows the driver to search for songs, with a song recommendation list generated by a large model.

Last month, Xiaomi Motors obtained independent production qualifications and exited borrowing from BAIC. It also changed the tail label of the SU7 which was previously Beijing Xiaomi, but this has now been changed to Xiaomi. The Xiaomi SU7 continues to catch the fancy of teeming fans of the Xiaomi brand. The delivery volume of the SU7 was recently reported by Xiaomi Motors to have exceeded 10,000 units in June. Nepali electric vehicle (EV) startup Yatri Motorcycles announced on Wednesday (June 19) that their upcoming Project 1 Gen 2 (P1 Gen 2) will be the world’s first two-wheeler to integrate wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. 

According to Thakur Poudel, Yatri’s technical director, the feature has so far been limited to four-wheeled vehicles. The P1 Gen 2 aims to change that by offering seamless smartphone integration for both Android and iOS users.

This will allow riders to seamlessly connect their P1 Gen 2 to their smartphones. Most importantly, it’s wireless, so you won’t need cables or additional accessories to enjoy this feature.

Riders can access phone functions directly through the bike’s built-in display and use voice commands for safe navigation, calls, messages, and music control while riding.

The Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration is the first major revealed feature of the P1 Gen 2. Yatri has been teasing the second generation of their Project 1 since late 2023.

Beyond connectivity, the P1 Gen 2 will add a crash cage and frame slider for enhanced protection. This addition is expected to be available for existing P1 owners as well since the bike’s overall design remains unchanged.

Yatri emphasizes that the most significant improvements lie within the P1 Gen 2’s core functionalities. They have reportedly analyzed over 1 million kilometers of P1 user data alongside general user feedback to refine performance, comfort, and stability for the next iteration.

While the launch date is still under wraps, reports suggest a 2024 release for the P1 Gen 2. Pricing details are also yet to be revealed. For context, the original P1 currently retails at a starting price of Rs 565,000 (approximately $4,240) in Nepal.

First up, let’s see what BYD has in its lineup. If you know BYD, you know they have many cars ranging from high-end ones to more price-friendly ones, also buses for commercial use. So this time, there are the Yangwang U8, U9 at one big booth, these two are truly luxurious, not just about the appearance, the power and components inside are also beastly. One thing that’s also very unique about it is that, there is a DJI drone kit made just for the U8, the drone can do everything automatically, once you set it all up on the screen in the car. The U9 as an electric supercar, has a lot of tricks in its sleeves. Some simple facts about it, there are four motors built-in, and the suspension has a special structure that allows the car to respond to potholes really quickly, almost like it can jump over them really fast. And the sensors on top of the front glass will smartly monitor the road ahead, to make sure the suspensions are ready for a quick move. So this is a supercar that is not just built for tracks, but also daily driving.

Now moving up to these more conventional sedans or SUVs. Just several days ago, many people did range tests on the new BYD Qin L-DMi, they all topped the EV range test by finishing at around 2500KM/1500Miles, with one full charge and full tank of gasoline, of course the speed was not that high, but still it’s a record. I think nobody can resist a car with such a range and low cost, isn’t it? Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to take a shoot on that one, but we did take some photos of these two, the Dolphin and Seal. These two are actually the star models overseas, they have been running on the roads in many countries already, such as Asian countries like Thailand, many EU countries, Pacific islands, and South American countries, you should definitely check them out later.

AITO ft. HUAWEI

The HarmonyOS from HUAWEI has been running on many car brands, AITO is the most famous one. The CEO of HUAWEI has shown his face in every AITO car release event, which really means that HUAWEI and AITO are in a very tight relationship. Several months ago, the AITO M9 was released, as a large SUV made for all types of use, it has achieved a sales record of 80k since. So what’s under the hood is the tech behind it, such as the HUAWEI ADS, HUAWEI SOUND, HUAWEI Intelligent Cabin, etc. Some other cars like the M7 and M5 are smaller cars, but basically not that different.

Anyway, unlike Apple which just abandoned the car project, HUAWEI has a more serious approach to the car business, they are quite dedicated to it, and they are moving fast. AITO is the perfect example, and more and more brands are on the way to doing so.

IM

Another brand named IM is also here. For the cars themselves, there are sedan and small SUV, such as the L6 and L7, the LS6 and LS7. The design language is quite unified, with soft lines and more vibrant colors. I think the cars will be more attractive to female users, you can also leave your opinions here.

NIO

NIO is one of the brands that started global sales early, they have gained a good reputation, and also achieved a good sales record in the EU. If you get up on the website, you will see that there are many languages to choose from, which means something. Personally, I think the cars all have really nice aesthetics, we are talking about the ET and ES series. They are all made with the signature front and back of the car, the lights. And there is one special thing about NIO, it is the only car brand that has a swapabble battery built-in, which means they can have infinite range, if there is enough battery station to support that of course, and they are making it happen right now. Funny story, the CEO has tried to have XIAOMI make cars with swappable batteries.

ZEEKR & GEELY

Now ZEEKR is a very interesting brand, it is a sub-brand of GEELY, and you may know that GEELY is the company that purchased VOLVO many years ago. As you might have guessed it, as a brand that is positioned to have an excellent driving experience, ZEEKR has the best chassis originating from VOLVO. The ZEEKR 007 as the best performer from this brand, is a real track beast, it ranked second as an EV on a famous Chinese track, just behind the ZEEKR 001. Speaking of ZEEKR 001, I have been in one, it was a speed demon, and it really scared the lunch out of me.

Although the driving experience is the highlight, and people always compare the ZEEKR 001 to the XIAOMI SU7, because they are positioned almost the same. BUT the operation system, I mean the smart features and stuff, it is not the best, but they are working on it though, we will see.

And for GEELY, it is a car company with a long history, their cars I would say are not that high-end, but reliability and affordability are still its tags, and VOLVO’s tech helped a lot, let’s just put it that way.

Li AUTO

As a car brand created by a middle-aged aged, who worked in the car media industry man, it carries that gene in the cars. The L7 8 9 are all made for a whole family, they are not made with harsh lines, and color choices are safe also. But the interior is just splendid, yes that’s the word for them, you have excellent screens and speakers, big screens, sofa-like seats, and a fridge. Funny, right? And that’s how the Chinese see them. These models are also selling globally, you can check them out later. There were a lot of car influencers driving these cars to Thailand, Alaska, and some really remote places in China, so they have been through the most serious tests, certainly very reliable and comfortable.  

The new one, MEGA, has received a lot of comments, good and bad, since its debut. It is shaped like a bullet train if you can tell, and it is also a very good choice for traveling or business use.

Hyper & AION

A few days ago, we posted a short video sharing our thoughts on Hyper recruiting former Tesla Supercharger team members, it is a really smart move and they are moving quickly. As you can see, the cars in its lineup are more flashy, and can be very attractive to many people. So if they make it to land in the USA and EU successfully, it will be about the cars and the supercharging stations.

So behind this brand, is AION as its mother company. AION is more of a brand that makes commercial use cars, we see a lot of the cars running on the road as taxis. The cars are not the best-looking ones, but they have excellent room inside, and a really good range packed.

Other Brands

It’s a pity that XIAOMI is not here this time, but I mean they have only one car so far, and the heat is still there, they don’t need to make a presence here. But Leijun did show up on the first day, joining hands with the CEO of HUAWEI, quite a harmonious picture, isn’t it?

You may also want to see some traditional car brands, right? So Volkswagen, BUICK, Mercedes-Benz, showed up with some old models, and some new EVs. And to be honest, they are far less interesting than other innovative electric cars.

And there are actually many brands that are selling cars globally, and we wouldn’t be able to show all of them here. Also with so many people around every car during the show, we can’t get in them to show you every detail, sorry about that.

Global leading electric vehicles manufacturer BYD has opened its outlet in Saudi Arabia. The company has been struggling under tough Sino-US relations and stringent tariffs preventing its progression to the US market. The BYD shop is located in Riyadh, the Saudi capital. The store integrates a flagship showroom, a discovery center, and a service center.

The new BYD store offers a full range of new energy vehicles by the brand for local consumers. Participants at the opening ceremony were allowed to have a close look and also test drive three all-electric BYD vehicles. The vehicles were the Han, BYD ATTO3 (or Yuan PLUS), and BYD Seal. Participants were also offered the opportunity to test drive two plug-in hybrid vehicles – the Qin PLUS and Song PLUS.

The strong debut of BYD in the Saudi EV market comes at an opportune time and aligns with the Saudi government’s goals to achieve a 30% prevalence of new electric vehicles. BYD will work with Al-Futtaim to continue to develop a new energy vehicle ecosystem and jointly promote the rapid development of the local EV industry. The BYD brand was officially launched in February 2024 and it has received positive feedback from consumers on its NEV offerings in the Saudi market. The models on offer come with outstanding designs and offer excellent performance, in sync with the BYD philosophy.

Recent research by Ipsos showed that up to 62% of Saudi consumers are attracted to BYD’s cutting-edge technology and show strong love for the brand. The entry of the brand into the very lucrative Saudi market while BYD still stays out of the US market. A stringent tariff regime in the US has effectively prevented the brand from setting up shop in the US but its operations in Saudi Arabia are blossoming.

BYD has launched its fifth-generation DM (dual mode) hybrid technology, setting a new benchmark in the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) market. The unveiling took place in Xi’an, Shaanxi province, and introduced significant advancements in fuel efficiency and driving range.

The new technology boasts a thermal efficiency of 46.06% and an impressive fuel consumption rate of just 2.9 liters per 100 kilometers when the battery is depleted. With a fully charged battery and a full tank of petrol, the comprehensive driving range reaches an unprecedented 2,100 kilometers. This milestone represents a significant leap from the previous generation, which had a fuel consumption of 3.8 liters per 100 kilometers on gasoline alone.

BYD has incorporated this advanced technology into two new models, the Qin L DM-i and Seal 06 DM-i. These vehicles, priced between 99,800 yuan (approximately $13,775) and 139,800 yuan, consume one-third the fuel of traditional cars while offering three times the range. The company anticipates annual fuel cost savings of up to 9,682 yuan for customers compared to gasoline-powered vehicles.

The strategic pricing and enhanced fuel efficiency of BYD’s new models position them as strong competitors against mid-size sedans like Volkswagen’s Sagitar and Toyota’s Corolla, priced at 127,900 yuan and 116,800 yuan, respectively. The Qin L and Seal 06 DM-i not only offer lower prices but also superior fuel efficiency, making them attractive options for budget-conscious consumers.

BYD’s aggressive pricing strategy includes a 10%-22% reduction in the first quarter, which has contributed to the popularity of models like the Qin and Song. These models have outsold traditional gasoline counterparts such as the Lavida and Sagitar, underscoring the growing consumer preference for more economical and environmentally friendly options.

The company’s market impact is underscored by its cumulative sales of over 3.6 million plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. In the first four months of 2024, China’s NEV (New Energy Vehicle) market saw significant growth with 2.985 million units produced and 2.94 million units sold, marking year-on-year increases of 30.3% and 32.3%, respectively.

BYD aims to lead the global development of plug-in hybrid technology and promote the green transformation of the global auto industry. With Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway as a major backer, BYD has ambitious plans to continue its international expansion, targeting competitive markets in Southeast Asia, Australia, and the Middle East.

In 2023, BYD delivered nearly 3 million battery-powered cars in China, and its net profit soared by 81% to 30.04 billion yuan. Chinese electric vehicle brand Avatr has announced a new model from its stables. It is the Avatr 07 SUV and it will be available as either an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) or a battery electric vehicle (BEV). The Avatr 07 is the third model from the company after the Avatr 11 SUV and Avatr 12 sedan.

Features

Avatr Technology is backed by Changan Automobile, CATL, and Huawei. The new model highlights Avatr’s ambition to compete in the EREV market. Both BEV and EREV variants of the Avatar 07 will be available. It is the first Avatr model to support both EREV and BEV considerations. The extension to EREV underpins the challenges of BEVs and the practicality of incorporating fuel tanks to expand the demand space for the model. The BEV market especially in China was the target of most EV startups in the country. The EREV delivers the extended range that could be gotten from a fuel-efficient vehicle in addition to having the driving experience of a BEV.

Avatr debuted in the EV segment in 2022 with the launch of the Avatr11 in August of 2022 while deliveries began in December 2022. The Avatr 12 was launched in November 2023 while deliveries commenced in December 2023. Avatr manufactured over 5,200 vehicles in April 2024. The production numbers for March 2024 were not released but the April 2024 figure was more than double of the February 2024 production.

The Avatr 07 will be released in rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive options. The new Avatr SUV has dimensions of 4,825 x 1,980 x 1,620 mm and a wheelbase of 2,940 mm. The Avatry 07 will be based on Huawei’s next-generation LiDAR and CATL’s latest supercharging batteries. Previously, the Avatr 07 was rumored to be released to the market in Q3, 2024. Avatr has not provided any price information for the new model but this is expected to be in the range of 250,000 yuan ($34,605) to 350,000 ($48,446).

Great Wall Motors (GWM) has announced a significant breakthrough in its development of solid-state battery and ultra-fast charging technologies. The Chinese automotive giant says it has successfully produced solid-state pouch cells, which is the final in the development of solid-state batteries. It will now focus on scaling up the model as a commercial product for large-scale manufacturing.

Solid-state batteries, unlike current lithium-ion batteries, use a solid material in place of the liquid electrolyte in lithium-ion batteries. This means that solid-state batteries have significantly higher energy densities and faster charging than lithium batteries.

Overheating is a serious safety concern for EVs and solid-state batteries offer better stability in this regard. They are less prone to overheating and possible fires which are recurrent issues with lithium-ion batteries. These batteries expectedly have greater reliability within a broader temperature range including in cold weather conditions. GMW says it is exploring diverse battery chemistries in addition to its solid-state efforts.

GMW is also making significant inroads in ramping up charging speeds through its development of ultra-fast charging technology. The GMW 4C supercharging battery cell is estimated to add up to 311 miles (500 km) in range with just 10 minutes of charging. This has great positive implications on long-distance EV travel, as it virtually eliminates the time penalty.

GMW is also developing a 6C cell that will further cut the charging time. It is expected that the GMW solid-state battery and ultra-fast charging products will soon be released. These technologies could debut on the Tank 800 SUV by the end of 2024. The GMW Lightning Cat sedan will also be refreshed later this year and it could incorporate the latest GMW battery tech.

Chinese EV powerhouse BYD will officially unveil the Shark electric pickup truck on the global stage in Mexico next week. The Shark is BYD’s first pickup electric truck and this will be the first time that a new BYD model is first released outside China for a while. The global launch is specifically scheduled for May 14 as per a launch teaser poster shared by the company.

The BYD Shark’s global debut in Mexico is ushering in the global era of new energy pickup trucks, according to BYD. The model is expected primarily aimed at overseas markets, underscored by its strategic launch in Mexico. The unveiling of a BYD pickup truck is coming after the brand has released several passenger cars. The regulation regime governing pickup trucks is very stringent when compared to regular passenger vehicles in China.

The BYD Shark is a mid-to-large size model that is bigger than the popular Toyota Hilux. The model will be built on the BYD dual-mode offroad (DMO) platform, as highlighted by BYD previously. The DMO platform was unveiled last year when BYD launched the Fang Cheng Bao lineup in August 2023. There is also a growing market for pickup truck EVs in China, with Geely announcing the Radar RD6 electric pickup truck back in 2022. The Radar RD6 has continued to remain in the market with some decent sales statistics since its first deliveries in November 2022. The RD6 which is designed for off-road movement has also been launched in Laos last November.

BYD has not yet provided any pricing information for the BYD Shark pickup EV at this time. The release date of the model is also unclear but we expect greater optics as the May 14 launch date draws closer.

Cadillac has unveiled the latest version of its Optiq EV in China. The 2025 Cadillac Optiq features a bold design and impressive features including its capable powertrain. The EV bears a strong resemblance to the bigger Cadillac Lyriq and comes with Cadillac’s signature vertical lighting elements.

Features

The 2025 Cadillac Optiq is designed reportedly for the Chinese market and has a vibrant orange color. A 33-inch curved digital display is one of the highlights of the interior of the EV. The Optiq is available either as a standard model or a long range model. The Standard model has a front-mounted 241hp electric motor with a torque of 329 Nm. It can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 7 seconds. The Standard model has a 68.4kWh battery that delivers an estimated range of 536km on a full charge. The Long Range version of the 2025 Cadillac Optiq is equipped with two electric motors for a combined all-wheel drive output of 283hp and a torque of 465Nm. It can go from 0 to 100km/h in 6 seconds. The Long Range model has a 79.7kWh battery pack that delivers a range of 600km on a single charge.

The new Cadillac Optiq offers several driver assistance features including auto braking, lane assist, and Super Cruise (for the Long Range model). It comes with heated and ventilated seats and a heated steering wheel. It has leather upholstery for a more comfortable seating experience, coupled with a 126-color ambient lighting system. It also has a wireless smartphone charger and a digital rearview mirror for added convenience.

Pricing & Availability

The 2025 Cadillac Optiq is priced in China at 239,700 yuan ($33,107) for the Standard model and 269,700 yuan ($37,251) for the Long Range variant. Customers will get a lifetime warranty on the EV’s electric systems. Cadillac has not provided any global availability information for the 2025 Cadillac Optiq yet.

Toyota has finally unveiled its bZ3C and bZ3X electric SUVs at the Beijing Automotive Show. The two Toyota EVs are designed for younger drivers and families respectively. It will debut in China and Toyota shared some key specs of the two new EVs.

Last year, Toyota showcased the concept EVs during the Auto Shangai Exhibition and the company has made significant progress since then. The concept vehicles showcased then were called the bZ Sport Cross Concept (now bZ3C) and the bZ FlexSpace Concept (now bZ3X). Toyota says the models were designed for the Chinese market but little details were known about them before now. The bZ3C is designed for Gen Z drivers, while the bZ3X is family-oriented.

Toyota developed the bZ3C in partnership with BYD Toyota EV Technology, FAW, and Toyota’s Intelligent ElectroMobility (IEM) R&D Center Team. On the other hand, the bZ3X was based on a collaboration between Toyota, the GAC Group, GAC Toyota, and IEM.

The larger EV of the two is the bZ3X and comes with a more spacious cabin. Both new SUVs feature a panoramic sunroof, a digital dashboard, a large infotainment screen, and wireless charging pads for charging mobile devices on the go.

The Toyota bZ3C and bZ3X will feature advanced driver-assistance technology but the details of the drivetrains and several other parameters are still not known. Toyota did not release any launch date for the two new electric SUVs but the dynamics indicate an imminent launch.

The price optics of the new Toyota EVs have not been provided as well. Although the bZ3C and bZ3X were designed for the Chinese market, it is unclear whether the models will also be available in selected markets outside China.

Geely Holding Group sub-brand Zeekr has unveiled its new SEA-M architecture and its first model based on this expansive structural design. The SEA-M architecture delivers what Zeekr says is the ultimate space and this is reflected in the Zeekr Mix which graced the stands of the Beijing Auto Show.

Zeekr is the premium electric vehicle arm of Geely and the Mix is its latest flagship offering. The SEA-M architecture is an improvement of the Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) that supports a wide range of products. The new SEA-M mobility solution, as with its original design, supports a wide range of EVs including robotaxis, multi-purpose vehicles, and vehicles for logistics operations.

The Zeekr Mix with SEA-M architecture comes with enhanced vehicle safety, swift handling, and the ultimate cabin space. The architecture, according to the company, supports the creation of an intelligent interior space with variable seat placement choices.

The Mix has a flat floor, high wheelbase-to-length ratio, and a capsule-styled exterior. The SEA-M imposes a turning radius of less than five meters for greater handling. Variable steering ratios are supported by the architecture and it has the potential to decouple the steering wheel for advanced intelligent driving in future models.

The Zeekr Mix has 6.3 square meters of interior space, which Zeekr says, is the largest in its class. The Mix is 4.7 meters long and has a wheelbase of 3 meters as well as a ground clearance of 39cm. It is being showcased as the first production EV with electrically rotatable front seats that support 270 degrees of rotation.

Although Zeekr has not released the launch date of the Mix, the announcement could be made soon, as well as the price of the model.

A new report by Counterpoint Research indicates that India’s electric vehicle (EV) market is expected to substantial growth in 2024. Sales are expected to surge by 66% compared to 2023, with EVs potentially accounting for 4% of total passenger vehicle (PV) sales.

Looking ahead, the report suggests that by 2030, EVs could make up roughly one-third of India’s annual PV sales.

In 2023, Tata Motors emerged as the dominant player in the EV market, commanding two-thirds of the market share. However, the report suggests that Maruti Suzuki’s planned entry into the EV market in 2025 could hinder the EV dominance of Tata in the country.

Furthermore, Vietnam’s EV brand VinFast has also announced plans to establish a manufacturing plant in Tamil Nadu, indicating growing industry investment in India’s EV sector.

The trend underlines the shift toward sustainable and eco-friendly technologies in the automotive industry, as noted in the Counterpoint report.

Liz Lee, Associate Director at Counterpoint Research, also stressed the importance of ramping up EV battery manufacturing in India to boost sales.

Companies like Ola, Reliance New Energy, and ACC Energy Storage have made significant investments in this area. Combined with the Make in India initiative, this is expected to cut production costs and drive further EV sales.

The Indian government has also announced initiatives such as the PLI scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cells (ACC) and recent reductions in import duties for EVs priced under $35,000. These are viewed as vital steps in attracting investment in the EV sector in India.

The report also points out notable growth in EV sales in 2023, with EV sales nearly doubling while overall passenger vehicle sales increased by 10%, capturing 2% of the PV market.

The report highlights key factors driving this trend including growing urban consumer interest, government support, improving infrastructure, and increased awareness of climate change.

In 2023, Mahindra & Mahindra experienced a remarkable 2,476% increase in market share, largely fueled by the success of its all-electric SUV, the XUV400. Other brands like MG Motor and BYD also performed well, with BYD solidifying its position among India’s top five EV brands.

Xiaomi has also started building dedicated stores in China for car sales

The report further suggests that Xiaomi has begun construction of dedicated 2S stores across China, specifically designed for sales and service of their EVs. These stores, estimated to number around 60-70 initially, will be established in major Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities. This development is seen as a strong indicator that official pricing for the SU7 will be revealed soon.

Scheduled for deliveries starting in Q2 2024, the Xiaomi SU7 made its international debut at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
